For a long time I wanted to make angel eyes on my VAZ 2106 with my own hands, so I decided, I thought with a friend how to make it neat and beautiful, through trial and error we came to this option.

What I needed:

LED strip SMD 5050 60 diodes per meter;
- Plexiglas (sheet thickness 10 mm);

About the manufacturing process:

My friend cut out the plexiglass rods for me, how - I don’t know, honestly. I had ready-made rods in my hands.

Here are the rods. length about 50 cm (with a margin)
I take the rods, put them one by one in the oven on a baking sheet so that the rod lies on the sides of the baking sheet, and the middle hangs. This is necessary in order to see when the middle begins to bend, which means the rod has warmed up, you can get it out and bend it, which I did.

As a form, I had a salad bowl. Salad bowl diameter 105 mm. While the rod is hot, bend around the salad bowl, cut off the excess with a hacksaw.

The tape was glued with a glue gun at the soldering points. Then we paste over this whole creation with aluminized tape, all sides except the front. Next, we drill a hole in the reflector, from above for the cable, we put the eye with a glue gun into the reflector. Then the glass on the sealant. That's it, that's the whole point. Everything is elementary simple.

I'll answer the most frequently asked questions right away:

As for the glue gun: whether it will disappear or not, I don’t know, we’ll see. I heard that the glue can withstand temperatures up to 90 degrees. If it disappears, I'll take off the glass, put my eye on the epoxy.
Regarding rods: dimensions 8*10*500+mm.
For expenses: I took 5m of tape for 145 UAH, with a friend in half. Glue is worth every penny. There was a sealant. As a result, I spent well, on the strength of 100 UAH. 🙂

The price for such products is quite high, 3-5 times higher, they write like a copy of branded ones. But as practice shows, the quality is low, the assembly is poor, they break quickly. It is often necessary to advise readers on what to do in such a case. There are usually two options, replacing several LEDs or replacing the entire LED ring.

To make it clearer for you, look at the difference in the characteristics of Chinese and branded LEDs 5050, 5630, 5730, 3528. The Chinese put a crystal in a standard case 3-4 times weaker, and 10 times worse in quality. It is difficult to distinguish good from low-quality, outwardly they are the same, it is necessary to calculate the power of one LED. Many online stores cannot resist the temptation to sell a cheap product worth 100 rubles for 1000 rubles.

How to DIY

Readers of my site are interested in how to make angel eyes with their own hands, after reading articles on the Internet. According to statistics, 99% are faced with this for the first time and mostly want to save money. They do not know the standards for light intensity and other parameters, so the result is not very good.

As a light source, you can use an end (corner) LED strip or a regular flat one.

On the Internet, the most popular option for making do-it-yourself LED angel eyes from transparent plexiglass or plastic. Shallow indentations are applied to it, and 0.2 or 0.5 watt LEDs are inserted from the ends. As you understand, the power is too low, the light will scatter forward and inward, and fall down inside the transparent material. Such an LED ring will be fully visible only at night, the brightness is at the level of the usual size. Powerful LED diodes for 1W, 3W, 5W will not even help.

In order not to break the textolite, first cut out a circle and then remove the middle. Make conductive tracks and it remains to solder the LED. This method is quite costly in terms of time and materials. For comparison, the cheapest diode ring for 20 LEDs costs from 80 rubles on Aliexpress, shipping is already included in the price.

In order for it to shine at the level of a prestigious car, a power of 5-10 watts and a luminous flux of 300 lumens are required, and the light should only go forward.

Another way is to use a flexible light tube, which is most often inserted into the headlights as parking lights. You can cut the tube and make a ring, it will keep its shape due to contact with the reflector. A two-color tube can perform the function of dimensions and turn signals.

Installation

Do-it-yourself installation of angel eyes is quite complicated, it takes skill, and sometimes good nerves. Installation requires disassembly of each headlight. Most headlights are assembled on a sealant that softens when heated with a building hair dryer. Much less common on sealant, which is rubber. It does not melt or soften in any way, it takes several hours to carefully pick it out and cut it. One headlight can take from 1 to 5 hours. The first time it took me about 10 hours to parse. Due to inexperience, it is possible to spoil the presentation in the area of \u200b\u200bthe junction of the glass and the case.

Then measure the diameter of the seat and install the angel eyes. Degrease the gluing points and fix the parts. There is often double-sided tape for mounting in the kit, but I do not trust him. The low beam halogen lamp in the headlight gets very hot and affects this tape.

In the reverse order, the headlight is assembled using a special rubber sealant. Assemble so that you can disassemble without consequences next time. If you assemble it poorly, moisture will get inside, the headlight will sweat, the wires will rot.

There are several connection options in the headlight:

inclusion together with dimensions;
instead of marker lights;
together with DRL;
inclusion of two-color together with a turn signal;

If the connection to the dimensions does not suit you, you can use the controller for DRL daytime running lights to control the on and off. Search for "DRL controller". To connect RGB, schemes from single-color ones are suitable, you just have to look for a place to place the RGB control unit.

a few plastic sticks. In length, they must be equal to the dimensions of the optics available on the machine. Therefore, to create tuning, we need four plastic sticks with a length of approximately 40-45 cm;

heat-resistant sealant suitable for working with optics;
four LED bulbs or tape. In the case of using tape, give preference to the SMD 5050 model for 60 diodes per meter. The choice of the color of the glow of the LEDs is determined only by your imagination. The best solution would be to match the color of the car with the color of the LEDs;
four spare glasses for the headlights. They must be bought just in case, since the old ones are unlikely to be removed intact and without chips;

resistors;

In order for everything to work out correctly and quickly, you must adhere to the following instructions:

curved tubes

we carry out the heating of the transparent tube until the moment when it begins to bend and easily succumb to the necessary deformations. You can heat the tube with a building hair dryer or a conventional oven;
take a round shape. In its role, you should use a rounded salad bowl or coffee jar. With the help of pliers, we bend around the heated plastic tube around the perimeter of a rounded shape;

Note! Be careful while shaping the tube. so that it doesn't overheat. Otherwise, small bubbles may form in the plastic.

then we expect the tube to completely solidify;
after that, we saw off the edges so that LEDs can be installed in the tube;
then we assemble the resistor and LEDs, carefully isolate the contacts and grind the soldering points;
then it is necessary to make notches on the tube in increments of approximately 2-2.5 mm. At the same time, 1–1.5 cm should be retreated from the edges;

Note! In order for the notches to be made evenly, the process of their formation must be controlled with a plastic clamp. If you make notches with the LEDs on, then at this stage you can already see the final result of your work.

Notches on the pipe

in order for the glow emanating from the LEDs to turn out to be uniform and bright enough, the notches should be located closer to the center. At the same time, they need to be done more deeply: in the middle - 5 mm, and at the ends - 2 mm;
after that, it is necessary to solder the diodes, be sure to follow the sequence so that the current flowing through them is equalized. It is necessary to cut and solder the tape only in specially designated places;
finally insert the LEDs into the tube.

As a result, the ends of the rings should have holes 5-7 mm long and 5 mm in diameter. It is recommended to use foil to cover the ends of the plastic tube.
If an LED strip is used, it is simply glued to the plastic strip. In this case, the soldering of the tape is carried out according to the standard scheme.
Before installing your homemade angel eyes system on the car, be sure to check it for build quality, LED glow and the strength of the resulting structure. Otherwise, if problems are found after installation, it will be very problematic to fix the defects.

If not LEDs are used, but an LED strip, the tube can be replaced with a plastic strip.

After manufacturing the LED backlight, it must be installed inside the headlight unit. It is done like this:

dismantle headlights;
heat the headlight glass with a hairdryer and remove it;
install "angel eyes" in the headlights and glue with glue or sealant;
connect the backlight wires to the parking lights;
glue the headlight glass with sealant;

How to make angel eyes on a VAZ 2106 - step by step instructions.

Step 1 - creating tuning rings.

From the sticks prepared in advance, it is necessary to make round rings, as a template for them, you can use a coffee can (200 g).

And in order for the plastic to become more plastic, it must first be heated, for example, in boiling water. At the same time, 2 pliers should be prepared. As soon as the plastic warms up to the required state, pull it out with the help of pliers and wrap it around the can, another pliers will come in handy here.

4 plastic rings are prepared in this way. But you can remove them from the can only when the plastic has cooled and hardened.

Step 2 - insert the electrical component.

A hole is drilled at each end of the ring, corresponding in length and width to the parameters of the LEDs.

The legs of the LEDs are cut off, at a distance of 5 mm from the light bulb (mark the polarity: where there is a boss, there is a positive contact). Next, the LEDs are soldered parallel to each other, wires are soldered to each contact: it is better to use different colors so that you don’t get confused later where the “+” and “-” are.

At a distance of 10-15 cm from the soldered diodes, a cut is made on the positive wire (which leads to the boss), into which the resistance is soldered. Then the LEDs are inserted into the holes prepared for them at the ends of the ring. For a better final effect, just before this action, it is recommended to drop a drop of any transparent varnish (for women, for nails) into these holes, it will serve as an additional connector.

Step 3 - connecting the structure.

After the required time has passed, notches are made along the entire length of the ring with a hacksaw blade, the step of the notches is 1 cm, but it may vary depending on the quality of the plastic. The depth of the notches is 0.5 mm.

Then the structure is connected to electricity. If all the LEDs are functioning and the light spreads evenly, you can proceed directly to the installation of angel eyes on the VAZ 2106 with your own hands.

To install angel eyes, you will first have to remove the glass from the headlights, not forgetting to mark on the back of the latter which one is near and which is far. Most often, glass is difficult to dismantle and is simply knocked out.

New (removed) glasses are coated with headlight sealant.

A ring with LEDs is placed in the headlight, so that the lock is located at the top (this will allow you to stretch (hide) the wires into the notch), and the risks on the ring face the light bulb.

After - the free space between the glass and the reflector along the edge of the headlight is also filled with sealant.

When the sealant dries, the headlights are connected to the on-board network and installed in their place.
