Biography
Ernst August was born in Brunswick, Brunswick (Duchy). Eldest son of Ernst August (1887-1953), the last Duke of Brunswick (1913-1918), and Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia (1892-1980), the only daughter of German Emperor Wilhelm II.
Ernst August of Brunswick was related to the English royal family. From birth he was Hereditary Prince of Brunswick (Ernst August, Erbprinz von Braunschweig). Shortly after his birth in 1914, the English King George V awarded him the title of Prince of Great Britain and Ireland. Also, Ernst August was to inherit the titles of Duke of Cumberland and Tavitdale, Earl of Armagh.

In addition to being German, Prince Ernst August also held British citizenship. After the First World War, Ernst August lived in Austria with his parents, brothers and sisters. During World War II, Prince Ernst August of Hanover participated in the Third Reich's war against the Soviet Union. In 1951, Ernst August married Princess Ortrud of Schleswig-Holstein-Sondenburg-Glücksburg (19 December 1925 – 6 February 1980), daughter of Prince Albrecht of Schleswig-Holstein-Sondenburg-Glücksburg (1863-1948) and his second wife, Princess Hertha von Isenburg -Budingen (1883-1972), daughter of Prince Bruno von Isenburg-Budingen. Their wedding was attended by many important royals, including his sister Queen Frederika and her husband King Paul of Greece, as well as the heads of the Saxon, Hesse, Mecklenburg, Oldenburg and Baden sovereign houses.
The civil marriage ceremony took place on August 31, 1951 at Marienburg Castle (Nordstemmen, Lower Saxony), and the church ceremony on September 5, 1951 in Hannover.
Having been widowed in 1980, Prince Ernst August remarried in 1981 to Countess Monika von Solm-Laubach (b. 1929).
