Large Christian Library. “... In my name they will cast out demons; will speak with new tongues"

People committed a lie before God, and then became angry with Him. Oh people, Who has the right to be angry with whom?

They closed their godless lips and thought: “Let us not mention the name of God, so that it disappears from this world!” Oh, unfortunate people, in this vast world your mouths are in the minority. Haven't you seen and heard how the dam makes the river sound? Without a dam, the river is silent and silent, but the dam loosens its tongue. Every drop starts to sound.

And your dam will do the same: it will loosen the tongue of the dumb and make the dumb speak. If your mouth ceases to confess the name of God, you will be horrified to hear it confessed even to the dumb and speechless. Indeed, if you keep silent, then the stones will cry out. Even if all the people on earth are silent, the grass will speak. Even if all people on earth erase the name of God from their memory, it will be written with a rainbow in the sky and fire on every grain of sand. Then sand will become people, and people will become sand.

The heavens will proclaim the glory of God, but the firmament proclaims the creation by His hand. Day for days burps the verb, and night of night proclaims reason(Ps. 18:2-3). So says the God-seer and the God-singer. What do you say? You are contemptuously silent about God - and therefore the stones will speak; and when the stones speak, you will want to speak, but you will not be able to. It will be taken from you and given to the stones. And the stones will become people, and you will be stones.

It happened in the old days that hard-mouthed people looked in the face of the Son of God and did not recognize Him, and the bonds of their tongue were not loosed to glorify Him. Then the Living God opened the mouths of the demons so that they would put people to shame by recognizing the Son of God. Demons, which are worse than stones and cheaper than sand, cried out in the presence of the Son of God, while the people stood near Him, seized with dumbness. And if something that completely fell away from God was forced to confess the name of God, how could sinless stones not do this, blindly submitting to God's will!

The Lord instructs people not only through heaven filled with angels and adorned with stars, not only through the earth, all covered with signs of God's existence, but even through demons - if only to provide the atheists, who are rapidly descending into hell, the opportunity to be ashamed of something and rise up , and save their souls from hell, fire and stench.

Since even the elect, who followed Christ on earth, showed little faith, the Lord led them to places of the most impenetrable pagan darkness in order to convict and shame them with what would happen. And what happened describes today's gospel.

And when He arrived on the other side in the country of the Gergesins, He was met by two demoniacs who came out of the tombs, very fierce, so that no one dared to pass that way. Gergesa and Gadar were cities in the land of the pagans, on the other side of the Sea of Galilee. These were two cities among ten that once existed on the shores of this sea. The evangelists Mark and Luke mention Gadara instead of Gergesa: this only means that the two cities were nearby and that the event described happened not far from both cities. Evangelists Mark and Luke mention one possessed, while Matthew mentions two. The former mention one of the two, which was more terrible and, as a terror to the whole neighborhood, better known, while Matthew mentions both, since both were healed by the Lord. And that one of them was more famous than his friend, is evident from the description of the holy evangelist Luke, who says that this possessed was from the city - one man from the city. Being a city dweller, he must have been more famous in the city than the other possessed, who, apparently, was from the village. It also follows from the words of Luke that this man was possessed by demons from a long time ago and that they tortured him long time therefore, he had been ill for a long time and, because of his many years of illness, was well known throughout this area. That he raged much more fiercely and viciously than his comrade, is evident from the remark of Luke: people tied him with chains and bonds, but he tore the bonds and was driven by a demon into the desert. So, this is the reason why the evangelists Mark and Luke remember only one demoniac, although there were two of them. Even today we often use a similar way of describing events, remembering, for example, only the leader of a captured band of robbers. And although they caught a whole gang of robbers led by an ataman, we say that such and such an ataman of robbers was caught. Evangelists do the same. And while Mark and Luke complete Matthew's narrative with one detail, namely, the description of the main possessed, Matthew completes Mark and Luke with another detail - the mention of both possessed.

These possessed people lived in tombs, and from the tombs they came out and wandered in the wilderness, and frightened people in the fields and on the roads, especially on the road near which their coffins were located. The pagans buried the dead most often near the paths and roads, which was not uncommon among the Jews. So, the tomb of Rachel is located on the road leading from Jerusalem to Bethlehem; the tomb of Manasseh on the road to the Dead Sea.

Having taken possession of two human beings, the demons began to use them as their tools to harm other people. For the main feature of people who are possessed by unclean spirits is to create only abominations and evil. They were naked from every good. And not dressed in clothes, says one of them. It seems that not only his body was naked, but also his soul was not clothed in any good, in any gift of the Spirit of God, but was completely naked and empty of goodness, which is God's gift. And both were so cruel and evil that no one dared to go that way.

And behold, they cried out: What have you to do with us, Jesus, the Son of God? You came here before the time to torment us. In this demonic cry, the most important thing is that the demons recognized Jesus as the Son of God and loudly confessed it in terrible fear. To be ashamed of people who looked in the face of the Lord and could not know Him or, having known Him, did not dare to recognize and openly confess (“Since both the disciples and the people called Him a man, therefore now the demons come and announce His Divinity” Zigaben). The demons actually confessed Christ not with a feeling of joy and exultation, as a person joyfully exclaims when he finds a great treasure, or as the apostle Peter exclaimed: You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God(Matthew 16:16); but they cried out in fear and horror, seeing their Judge before them. And yet they cried out and confessed the One whose name they most fear, and they hide it from people and erase it from the human heart. They cried out in anguish and despair, like many people who only in anguish and despair open their mouths to pronounce the name of God.

What have you to do with us, Jesus, Son of God?- the demons ask. That is: what is common between You and us? Why Your unexpected and unwanted visit? What is the agreement between Christ and Belial(2 Corinthians 12:7)? No consent. Therefore, the servants of Belial, the tormentors of people, ask Christ why He came to them? And wherein: torment us before the time. So they are looking forward to the day of judgment and torment at the end of time. The very presence of Christ means for them a torment more terrible than light for a mole or fire for a spider. In the absence of Christ, demons are so shameless and bold that people possessed by them are lower than cattle and fill the whole neighborhood with fear, so no one dared to pass that way. And in the presence of Christ, they are not only slavishly frightened, but also cowardly submissive - like any tyrant before his judge - for, behold, they began to humbly ask the Lord that He would not send them into the abyss. And they asked Jesus not to command them to go into the abyss. To not command - because, therefore, if He commands them, they will be forced to go. Such is the power and power of Christ. And the abyss is their true dwelling place and the place of their torment. The perspicacious prophet speaks of the prince of demons: How you fell from the sky, morning star, son of the dawn! crushed on the ground, trampling the nations. But you are cast into hell, into the depths of the underworld(Is.14:12,15), where weeping and gnashing of teeth. Because of human sins, by God's permission, demons enter people. And it is easier for them in people than in the abyss. For when they are in people, they torment people, but when they are in the abyss, they torment themselves. Being in people, they also experience great torment, but this torment is weakened by the fact that someone else shares them. The demon is a dirty trick of the flesh, sting in the flesh, as the apostle calls him, who felt his presence (2 Cor. 12: 7). On the flesh, as on a ladder, he climbs to the soul, clings to the human heart and mind - until everything decomposes, disfigures, devastates, depriving Divine beauty and purity, reason and truth, love and faith, hope for good and the will to good. Then the demon will sit in the person as on his throne, take in his hands both the soul and the human body - and the person will become for him the cattle on which he rides, the pipe on which he plays, the beast through which he bites. Such were the obsessed people referred to in the Gospel. It is not said that they themselves saw Christ, or knew Him, or turned to Him, or that they had any conversation with Him at all. All this was done by the demons that inhabited them. The possessed, as it were, do not exist: they are like two dead coffins, which the demons push in front of them and drive with their whips. To heal such people means to raise the dead, and more than that. For a dead man is a soul separated from the body. If the soul is in the hands of God, He can return it to the body - and the body will come to life. But something happened to these possessed that is worse than death. Their souls are stolen and enslaved by demons, they are held in their hands by demons. This means that it is necessary to take away the human soul from the demon, it is necessary to expel the demon from the person and return the soul to the person. Therefore, the miracle of the healing of the possessed is at least equal to the miracle of the resurrection of the dead, if not greater.

"You came here ahead of time torment us!" - the demons say to Christ. So they already know that they will end up in torment. Oh, if sinful people could realize at least this: that torment awaits them, and no less than that expected by demons! The demons know that in the end the human race, their main prey, will break out of their hands, and they will be thrown into a dark abyss, where they will only have to gnaw and eat each other. The great prophet speaks of the prince of demons that he will be defeated outside your tomb(that is, outside the body of possessed people), like a despicable branch, and further - like a trampled corpse(Is. 14:19). And the Lord himself testifies: I saw Satan fall from the sky like lightning(Luke 10:18). In the end, sinners will also see this, when for their sins they fall together with this lightning into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels(Matthew 25:41).

And while the demons with fear and trembling implored Christ, a large herd of pigs, about two thousand, peacefully grazed far away on the shore. And the demons asked the Lord: if you drive us out, then send us to a herd of pigs. In other words: just don't command us to go into the abyss, but at least let's go into the bodies of pigs. If you kick us out! Do not speak from a man, do not even want to mention the human name - it is so hateful to them. For of all the creatures in the universe, nothing is more hated by demons than man, and they envy no one and nothing more than man. And our Lord Jesus Christ specifically emphasizes this word - man: come out, unclean spirit, from this man! They do not want to leave a person, they would have remained with incomparably greater pleasure in people, instead of going into pigs. Why do they need pigs? If demons can turn people into pigs, what worse thing can they do to pigs? For the rest, and when they enter swine or some other creature, their malice is directed against a person. And through the pigs they will try to harm the man; if nothing else, then at least by drowning pigs and making people angry with God. Therefore, when there is a question about an empty abyss, pigs are preferable to them than an abyss.

And He said to them, go. And they went out and went into the herd of swine. And so, the whole herd of pigs rushed down the steep into the sea and perished in the water. In the same way, the evil spirits could have compelled those two unfortunates to drown themselves in the sea, if the power of God had not hindered them. It happens, however, and not infrequently, that the mentally ill either fall to pieces by throwing themselves from a height, or are drowned, or thrown into the fire, or hanged. Evil demons force them to do this. For their goal is not only to poison human life, but also to destroy the soul for both this and that world. However, it often happens that God, in His most wise reasons, protects people from such a death.

But why did our Lord Jesus Christ send evil spirits into pigs? He could send them to trees or stones, why exactly to pigs? Not to fulfill the desire of demons, but to reason with people. Where there are pigs, there is uncleanness, and unclean spirits love uncleanness; where it does not exist, they create it themselves; where there is little of it, there they quickly manage to seduce and deftly turn small into big. And if they inhabit even the purest person, they will soon pile up swine dirt in him. And by the fact that the pigs immediately rushed into the sea and died, the Lord wants to show us that greed and overeating are bad helpers in the fight against demonic forces, and remind us of fasting. Which animal is more greedy and voracious than pigs? See how the demons quickly took possession of them and destroyed them! So it is with greedy and gluttonous people, who think that through gluttony they accumulate strength in themselves. Meanwhile, they do not accumulate strength, but weakness - both physical and spiritual. Saint Basil the Great wrote: “I know that doctors do not prescribe various dishes to the sick, but abstinence and fasting. Wouldn’t you say that it’s easier for sailors to save a boat overloaded than moderately and lightly loaded? ( Word 10, about fasting).

Gluttons are spineless people, weak before people and even weaker before demons. There is nothing easier for demons than to push them into the sea of spiritual death and drown them in it! But from all this it is also clearly seen how terrible the power of demons is when God does not restrain it. The demons, who were only in two people, in a few moments took possession of more than two thousand pigs and drowned them all. But before that, God held them until Christ came, to show His power and authority over them; and here God let them show their power. If God had allowed it, the demons in a few moments would have done the same to all people on earth as they did to pigs. But God is a Lover of mankind, and His boundless love keeps us alive and protects us from the most fierce and terrible enemies.

But, someone will say, was it not a pity to the Lord that, firstly, so many pigs died, and secondly, such damage was done to the inhabitants? This is again the devil leading people to such thoughts, as if wanting to seem more compassionate than Christ! But what are pigs compared to short-lived grass? And if God is not sorry for the white lilies of the field, which today are clothed in greater luxury than King Solomon, and tomorrow they will be thrown into the furnace, why should He have pity on pigs? Or perhaps it is more difficult for God to create a pig than a lily of the field? But someone will say again: not for the sake of beauty, but for the sake of utility. But does a pig benefit a person only when it nourishes and fattens his body, but not when it helps to enlighten his soul? After all, here we are talking about the latter. You are better than many small birds the Lord said to the people. Isn't it better and more important than people and many pigs - even some two or three thousand pigs? Let each one think of himself and his own cost, and he will quickly come to the conclusion that the lesson taught to mankind through this case of pigs has come at a very cheap price. Because it was necessary to visually - and almost rudely - to show the stupefied human race, firstly, the devil's impurity and, secondly, the devil's power. No words in the world could express this so clearly as the rage and death of pigs attacked by evil spirits. And what words could convince the pagans from Gergesa and Gadara, if even such a terrible and obvious proof - not a proof, but a demonstration - still could not awaken them from the sleep of sin, stop them from the abyss into which they, like pigs, were mercilessly dragged demons, and teach faith in the almighty Christ!

For this is what happened next: the shepherds ran and told in the city and in the villages. And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they asked Him to depart from their borders.. Fear and trembling seized both the shepherds and the inhabitants, and they horrified. They all saw the unseen and unheard of: the demon-possessed, who had troubled them for years, sat at the feet of Jesus, calm and in their right mind. And they heard from the apostles and from their shepherds the story of how Christ healed demon-possessed people, how a legion of evil spirits trembled with fear at the mere appearance of Christ, how in fear they begged Him to send them at least into pigs, if they were forbidden to be in people, and, finally, as unclean, like a whirlwind, took possession of the pigs and threw them into the depths of the sea. All this they heard, all this they well understood, when they saw two new people, purified and resurrected, who had just been worse than two dead men; and they looked in the face of the Lord, who stood before them, meek and humble, as if he had not done a miracle, greater than if he lifted the Gergesin mountain and threw it into the sea. And out of all this, only one thing sunk into the memory and heart of the dumbfounded inhabitants, namely: that their pigs perished irrevocably. Instead of falling to their knees and thanking the Lord for saving their two brothers, they regret losing the pigs! Instead of calling the Lord for a visit, they ask Him to leave as soon as possible. Instead of singing the glory of God, they lament over the pigs. But do not rush to condemn these pig-loving Gergesins - first take a look at today's society and count all your pig-loving fellow citizens, who, like the Gergesins, their pigs are dearer than the lives of their brethren. Or do you think that there are few people today, even among those who make the sign of the cross and confess Christ with their mouth and tongue, who would not hesitate to kill two people in order to acquire two thousand pigs? Or do you think that there are many among you who would sacrifice two thousand pigs to save the lives of two crazy people? Oh, let all such be covered with deep shame, and let not condemn the Gergesins before they condemn themselves. If the Gergesenes had risen from their graves today and started counting, they would have counted a huge number of their like-minded people in Christian Europe. They, at least, asked Christ to move away from them, and the Europeans drive Christ away from themselves - if only to remain alone, alone with their pigs and with their rulers - demons!

All this event, from beginning to end, contains a different, even deeper inner meaning. But even what we have said is enough for teaching, warning and awakening of the one who feels himself in his own body, as in a coffin; who notices the action of demonic power in his passions, binding him with iron bonds and chains and dragging him into the abyss of death; who, in spite of this, values a person in himself, that is, his soul, above all pigs, all cattle, all earthly possessions and wealth - and is ready to pay the Doctor with all this for the healing of his illness.

The Gospel story ends with the words: Then He got into the boat, crossed back and came to His city. He didn't say a word to the Gergesenes. How will words help where such great Divine miracles did not help? He didn't rebuke them. He silently descended from the mountain, entered the boat and sailed away from them. What meekness, what patience, what Divine loftiness! How insignificant is the victory of that commander (Caesar) who proudly wrote to his Senate: “I came, I saw, I conquered!” Christ came, saw, conquered and remained silent. And, silent, made His victory wondrous and eternal. And let the Gentiles learn from the example of this proud general; we will learn from the example of the meek Lord Jesus Christ. He is not forced on anyone. But whoever accepts Him, accepts Life, and whoever moves away from Him remains in a pigsty, in eternal demonic possession and eternal death.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us sinners, heal and save us! Honor and glory befits you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit - the Trinity of Consubstantial and Indivisible, now and forever, at all times and forever and ever. Amen.

"Biblical demonology", how Jesus Christ cast out demons.

In all the gospels of Matthew, Luke and Mark, demons were cast out. They also wrote about how Jesus Christ fought the demons. The beginning of a new era brought mankind salvation from Satan and unclean spirits. Is it possible to call Jesus an exorcist, undoubtedly yes, so did the contemporaries of Christ.

The very concept of "exorcism" (Greek exousia - to swear and take under control), thereby appealing to something higher and thereby securing agreement with God. Exorcism. Jesus himself was the helper of God, from his word he called to leave the demons of the occupied body. But the Bible mentions the lines that Jesus did not always act from God, without resorting to the help of higher powers, he often did it from himself. But where did such abilities come from?

After John the Baptist received the baptism of Jesus Christ, and after Christ was baptized, he went into the wilderness. What happened in the desert, Jesus spent exactly 40 days in the desert, and it was there that he was tempted by Satan throughout the entire period. Then he returned to Capernaum and taught disciples in that city.

The following story is told by Mark in the Gospels of Mark the gospel (1:23-27) and Luke in the gospel of Luke (4:33-36):

“There was a man in their synagogue who had an unclean spirit and was possessed by demons, and he cried out with a loud voice: What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazarene? Leave us. You came to kill everyone! I know You, Holy One of God, who You are. But Jesus forbade him, saying: shut up and leave this body. Then the unclean spirit, casting him down in the middle of the synagogue, went out of him without hurting him in the least. And everyone was horrified, what does this mean, people asked each other: what is this? what kind of new teaching, what could it mean? He commands unclean spirits with power, and they obey him? And rumors about him spread throughout the neighborhood. "(Mark 1:23-27).

After that, the traditional model of the expulsion of demons from a person went. The first model, the demon causes unthinkable torment to a person, the release of evil spirits is accompanied by the voices and cries of the possessed. The second model of the demon knows Jesus, and eventually obeys him, leaving the body. But Christ did a little differently, he acted on his own, in contrast to his followers, who acted on behalf of God. Which was practiced by the rest of the righteous of his time. His students resorted to rituals, incantations, and magical signs and images. But Christ rejected this, telling everyone that it was his word and his power that had unlimited power on earth. Demons obey him as the Lord of the world.

Mark and Luke write that after the incident in Capernaum, the son of God cast out demons and healed many diseases (Mark 1:32-34; Luke 4:38-41). The evangelists make a very important clarification that Jesus strictly forbade demons from speaking.

The Bible describes that Jesus himself was possessed, Christ had in himself the demon Beelzebub (Beelzebul), or Beelzebub (Beelzebub). This incident is written in the Bible, Mark (3:22-27), Matthew (12:24-29) and Luke (11:14-22):

“The scribes from Jerusalem say, He drives out demons by the power of the prince of demons and has Beelzebub in him. How can a demon exorcise evil spirits? If Satan himself became a rival to himself and divided, and he cannot stand, but his end has come. » Mark (3:22-27).

The demon Beelzebub, or Baal-zebub, is the "lord of the flies." The Phoenician deity or Canaanite ruler (Canaanite) is the lord of heaven or the lord of the heavenly dwelling. God Baal (Baal) at the time of the prophet Elijah was a rival to the god Yahweh (Jehovah) and his name means for the Jews an evil spirit (1 Sam. 18; 2 Sam. 13).

The most famous episode of the exorcism is the healing by Jesus of a demon-possessed man in Geraz. This episode is most often mentioned in the testimonies (Mk. 5:1-13) and (Lk. 8:26-33), and two demoniacs, according to the Gospel of (Matt. 8:28-32). Although the plot is the same, there are differences in the plot. But the bottom line is that a man got up from the grave, possessed by demons. He screamed terribly and beat against the stones. Seeing Christ, he ran up to him and asked him to release his soul.

Some scriptures mentioning the exorcism of Christ:

Mark (7:25-30; Matt. 15:21-28)

Mark (9:38-41; Luke 9:49-50)

And as if you were sometimes the daughter of the tsar, in Rome, the city of the tormented devil, healed you, save us from his fierce machinations all the days of our belly, especially on the day of our last breath, intercede for us. Wake us then an assistant and a speedy chaser of evil spirits, and a leader to the Kingdom of Heaven. Amen.

The Monk Irinarkh (in the world Elijah) renounced the world at the age of 30, took the tonsure and spent 38 years in seclusion in the Borisoglebsk Monastery. This saint himself fought demons.

O great saint of Christ, voluntary sufferer, new-probing miracles, our father Irinarshe. Fertilizer of the Russian land, praise to the city of Rostov, great decoration and affirmation of this monastery! Who will not be surprised at your spontaneous and long-term suffering patience: For thirty years in a cramped and cold hut you concluded yourself, coldness, hunger and exhaustion of the flesh of the Kingdom for the sake of Heaven, you suffered, to this same expulsion from the monastery, at the obsession of the enemy, you meekly endured. Vema, as if in the middle of being implored from the brethren, like a gentle lamb, you returned to your abode and settled in that hut, like a hard adamant, arming yourself with patience on the invisible demonic hordes and visible enemies. When, by the permission of God, you came to this abode of this flattering warrior, you were not afraid of the mortal punishment, but being wise with the word, you created it to return to your own place. For this sake, the All-good God, seeing your faith and suffering long-suffering, the gift of clairvoyance and healing is a gift to you: healing to the heavenly, goodness to the lame, enlightenment to the blind, and many others with faith coming to you for good, even today you work miracles. But we are unworthy, seeing such miracles and fulfilling joys, we appeal to you: Rejoice, valiant sufferer and conqueror of demons, Rejoice, our quick helper and warm prayer book to God. Hear us sinners, praying to you and fleeing under your roof: manifest your merciful intercession for us to the Most High and intercede with your God-pleasing prayers all that is useful for the salvation of our souls and bodies, save this holy monastery, every city and all and every Christian country from all the slanders of the enemy, in our sorrows and illnesses, give us a helping hand, but by your intercession and intercession, by the grace and mercy of Christ our God, we will also be delivered unworthy, after departing from this life, shuiyago standing, and let us be worthy of the right hand with all the saints till the end of time. Amen.

O Reverend Father Irinarsha! Here we pray diligently: be our intercessor, ask us, the servants of God (names), from Christ God peace, silence, prosperity, health and salvation, and protection from all enemies visible and invisible, cover us with your intercession from finding any troubles and sorrows, and even more so from the temptations of the dark enemy, may we all glorify the all-holy name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

O great servant of God, Reverend Father Anthony! As if you had boldness to the Lord Christ and to His Most Pure Mother, be about us, unworthy (names), a warm prayer book, interceding us from all troubles and misfortunes, but with your prayers we will be unharmed from enemies visible and invisible. Pray for God's mercy, may it save us from our sins, in the image of fate. Pray for His goodness, which graciously needs to give this temple (house), our life to die and all the parishioners of this temple to have mercy, and save our souls, let us unceasingly glorify, praise, sing and magnify the honorable and magnificent name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Saint Seraphim himself repulsed the onslaughts of the devil, taking upon himself the feat of being a pillar, praying on a huge stone in the forest with upraised hands.

Oh wonderful Father Seraphim, the great wonderworker of Sarov, a hasty helper to all who resort to you! In the days of your earthly life, no one is thin and inconsolable from you when you leave, but for everyone in the sweetness there was a vision of your face and a benevolent voice of your words. To this, the gift of healing, the gift of insight, the gift of weak souls of healing is abundant in you. When God called from earthly labors to heavenly rest, your love is not simple from us, and it is impossible to count your miracles, multiplied like the stars of heaven: behold, at all ends of our earth, you are the people of God and grant them healing. The same we cry out to you: O quiet and meek servant of God, daring to pray to Him, never refrain from calling you, lift up your pious prayer for us to the Lord of Forces, may he grant us all that is useful in this life and all that is useful for spiritual salvation, may he protect He will teach us from the falls of sin and true repentance, in a hedgehog to unstumblingly enter us into the eternal Kingdom of Heaven, even though you are now in an impenetrable glory, and there to sing the Life-Giving Trinity with all the saints until the end of time. Amen.

O great servant of God, reverend and God-bearing Father Seraphim! Look from the Mountain of glory on us, humble and weak, burdened with many sins, asking for your help and comfort. Come to us with your mercy and help us to keep the commandments of the Lord immaculately, keep the Orthodox faith firmly, repentance for our sins diligently bring God, in the piety of Christians prosper gracefully and are worthy of being your prayerful intercession to God for us. Hey, Holy One of God, hear us praying to you with faith and love, and do not despise us who demand your intercession: now and at the hour of our death, help us and intercede with your prayers from the evil slanders of the devil, may those forces not possess us, but May we be honored with your help to inherit the bliss of the abode of paradise. We now place our hope on you, good-hearted father: truly guide us to salvation and lead us to the non-evening light of Eternal Life by your God-pleasing intercession at the Throne of the Most Holy Trinity, may we praise and sing with all the saints the revered Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever centuries. Amen.

O Reverend Father Seraphim! Raise up for us, servants of God (names), your pious prayer to the Lord of strength, may it grant us all that is useful in this life and all that is useful for spiritual salvation, may it protect us from the falls of sin and true repentance, may it teach us how to insinuate us without fail into the eternal Kingdom of Heaven, even if you now shine in imperishable glory, and there sing the Life-Giving Trinity with all the saints forever and ever.

Alive in the help of the Most High, dwelling in the blood of the God of Heaven, he says to the Lord: Thou art my intercessor and my refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. Yako He will deliver you from the snares of the net and from the word of the rebellious: His splash will overshadow you, and under His wings you hope: His truth will be your weapon. Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, from the arrow flying in the days, from the thing in the darkness of the transient, from the scum and the demon of the noonday. A thousand will fall from your country, and the darkness at your right hand will not come close to you: both look at your eyes and see the reward of sinners. As you, O Lord, are my hope, the Most High have laid down your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not approach your body, as if by His Angel a commandment about you, save you in all your ways. They will take you in their hands, but not when you stumble your foot on a stone: step on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover, and, as I know My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him: I am with him in sorrow, I will crush him and glorify him: I will fulfill him with long days and show him My salvation.

Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from His face. Like smoke disappears, let them disappear, like wax melts from the face

fire, so let the sinners perish at the presence of God, and let the righteous rejoice, let them rejoice before God, and enjoy in joy. Sing to God, sing to His name, create paths for the one who ascended to the fuses, the Lord is His name, and rejoice before Him. Let them be troubled at His face, the Father of orphans and the Judge of widows: God is in His holy place. God instills like-minded people in the house, harassing those bound by courage, who also grieve those who live in graves. God, you always go before your people, you always pass by in the wilderness, the earth is shaken, for the heavens are torn down from the presence of the God of Sinai, from the presence of the God of Israel. Thou shalt excommunicate the rain, O God, to Thy heritage and weary. Thou hast done it. Thy animal live on it; The Lord will give a word to those who preach the gospel with great power. The king of the forces of the beloved, the beauty of the house divide self-interest. If you sleep in the middle of the limit, the krill of the pigeon is silvered and its mezhdoramiya in the glitter of gold. Every now and then the heavenly kings will be on it, they will be covered with snow in Selmon. Mountain of God, fat mountain, deserted mountain, fat mountain. Do you not eat damp mountains? Mountain, south, God will deign to live in it, for the Lord will dwell to the end. The chariot of God is in darkness, thousands of those who speak, the Lord is in them in Sinai in the holy. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast captivated captivity, thou hast received gifts among men, for those who do not repent, hedgehog dwell. Blessed be the Lord God, blessed be the Lord day by day, the God of our salvation, our God, the God of salvation, and the Lord, the Lord's outgoing mortal, will hasten us. Both God will crush the heads of His enemies, the top of the hair that is transient in their sins. I will turn the speech of the Lord from Bashan, I will turn it into the depths of the sea. As if your foot would be dipped in blood, the tongue of your dogs, from the enemy from him. I saw Thy processions, O God, the processions of my God the King, even in the holy place, having preceded the princes near those who sing, among the virgins of timpanes. In the churches, bless God, the Lord from the fountains of Israel. Tamo Benjamin the youngest is terrified, the princes of Judah are their rulers, the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali. Commandment, O God, by Thy power, strengthen, O God, this which Thou hast done in us. From Your temple to Jerusalem, the king will bring you gifts. Prohibit with a reed beast, a host of young people in human youths, shut up the hedgehog tempted with silver, squander tongues that want to scold. Prayers will come from Egypt, Ethiopia will put her hand before God. Kingdoms of the earth, sing to God, sing. Lord, who has ascended to heaven in the east, behold, he will give his voice a voice of power. Give glory to God, on Israel His majesty, and His power on the clouds. Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel: He will give power and dominion to His people, blessed be God.

Practices that have the character of exorcism were known in pagan religions, but most often they were an attempt to plead with the evil spirit, to show him respect. Such practices were religious, magical or medical in nature. In the Old Testament, Satan is spoken of very rarely, everything that could inspire the dualism of good and evil is avoided. Satan is depicted as one of the angels, as well as an adversary, an accuser before the Throne of the Lord God. The fight against evil forces takes many forms:

  • cleansing from sins through a sacrificial calf (Lev 16:3-27)
  • protection from the destroyer through the sprinkling of the blood of the lamb on the doorposts (Ex 12:21-23)
  • due to the stability of a person in a just life, Satan has no power over him (Pro 3.2)
  • ritual exorcisms in the Book of Tobit, revealed by an angel (Tov 6:2-8)

There are many stories and places in the New Testament where Jesus, and then the Apostles, cast out evil spirits from the possessed and heal the sick.

Lev 16:6-22

And Aaron shall offer a calf as a sin offering for himself, and cleanse himself and his house. And he will take two goats and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tabernacle of meeting; and Aaron shall cast lots on both goats: one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat; And Aaron will bring the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord, and he will offer him as a sin offering, and the goat on which the lot fell for a scapegoat he will set alive before the Lord, to cleanse him and send him to the wilderness for a release. And having cleansed the sanctuary, the tent of meeting, and the altar, he will bring a live goat, and Aaron will lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and will confess all the iniquities of the children of Israel over him, and all their transgressions, and all their sins, and will place them on the head of the goat, And he will send with a messenger into the wilderness: and the goat will carry on himself all their iniquities into an impenetrable land, and he will let the goat into the wilderness.

Ex 12:21-23

And Moses called all the elders of Israel together and said to them, Choose and take for yourselves lambs according to your families, and kill the passover; and take a bundle of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the vessel, and anoint the crossbar and both doorposts with the blood that is in the vessel; but you no one go out of the door of your house until the morning. And the Lord will go to strike Egypt, and he will see blood on the crossbar and on both doorposts, and the Lord will pass by the doors, and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike.

Zech 3:1-2

And he showed me Jesus, the great priest, standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the Lord said to Satan: May the Lord forbid you, Satan, may the Lord forbid you, who has chosen Jerusalem! is he not a brand cast out of the fire?

I. Jesus heals and delivers

1. Jesus preaches the coming of the Kingdom of God, heals and delivers from evil spirits.

Mt 4:23-25

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every infirmity among the people. And the news about him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all the weak, possessed by various diseases and seizures, and demon-possessed, and lunatics, and paralyzed, and He healed them. And many people followed Him from Galilee and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

Luke 6:17-19

And descending with them, He stood on a level place, and a multitude of His disciples, and many people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seaside places of Tire and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, also suffering from unclean spirits; and were healed. And all the people sought to touch Him, because power came from Him and healed everyone.

2. Jesus heals many people who are possessed. It is massive and public.

Mt 8, 16

When evening came, many demoniacs were brought to Him, and He cast out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick...

Mk 1, 32-39

When evening came, when the sun was setting, they brought to Him all the sick and possessed. And the whole city gathered at the door. And He healed many that were afflicted with various diseases; cast out many demons, and would not allow the demons to say that they know that He is the Christ. And He preached in their synagogues throughout Galilee and cast out demons.

3. The evil spirits being cast out have knowledge of Jesus.

Luke 4:33-37

There was a man in the synagogue who had an unclean demonic spirit, and he cried out with a loud voice: leave it; what have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? You came to destroy us; I know You who You are, Holy One of God. Jesus forbade him, saying: shut up and come out of him. And the demon, throwing him down in the middle of the synagogue, went out of him without harming him in the least. And terror fell on them all, and they reasoned among themselves: what does it mean that He commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they go out? And the rumor about Him spread throughout all the surrounding places.

Mark 1:23-28

In their synagogue there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit, and he cried out: leave it! what have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? You have come to destroy us! I know You who You are, Holy One of God. But Jesus forbade him, saying, Be silent and come out of him. Then the unclean spirit, shaking him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. And everyone was horrified, so that they asked each other: what is this? What is this new teaching that He commands the unclean spirits with authority, and they obey Him? And soon a rumor about Him spread throughout the region in Galilee.

4. Jesus frees the possessed and forces them to enter the swine. Possession can be multiple in nature - several evil spirits can reside in a person.

Matthew 8:28-34

And when He arrived on the other side in the country of the Gergesins, He was met by two demoniacs who came out of the tombs, very fierce, so that no one dared to pass that way. And behold, they cried out: What have you to do with us, Jesus, the Son of God? You came here before the time to torment us. Far away from them, a large herd of pigs grazed. And the demons asked Him: if you cast us out, then send us into a herd of pigs. And He said to them, go. And they went out and went into the herd of swine. And so, the whole herd of pigs rushed down the steep into the sea and perished in the water. The shepherds ran and, having come to the city, told about everything, and about what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they asked Him to depart from their borders.

Mark 5:1-20

And they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of Gadarene. And when He got out of the boat, a man who came out of the tombs immediately met Him, possessed by an unclean spirit, he had a dwelling in the tombs, and no one could bind him even with chains, because he was many times bound with shackles and chains, but tore the chains and broke the fetters and no one was able to tame him; always, night and day, in mountains and graves, he shouted and beat against stones; but when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him, and, crying out with a loud voice, said: What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I conjure you by God, do not torment me! For Jesus said to him, Get out, you unclean spirit, from this man. And he asked him: what is your name? And he answered and said: My name is legion, because we are many. And they asked Him a lot not to send them out of that country. A large herd of pigs grazed there by the mountain. And all the demons asked Him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. Jesus immediately allowed them. And the unclean spirits went out and entered into the pigs; and the herd rushed down the steep into the sea, and there were about two thousand of them; and drowned in the sea. And the herders of pigs ran and told in the city and in the villages. And the inhabitants went out to see what had happened. They come to Jesus and see that the demon-possessed one, in which the legion was, is sitting and clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who saw it told them about how it happened to the demoniac, and about swine. And they began to ask Him to depart from their limits. And when He entered the boat, the demoniac asked Him to be with Him. But Jesus did not allow him, but said: Go home to your people and tell them what the Lord has done to you and how he has had mercy on you. And he went and began to preach in Decapolis what Jesus had done to him; and everyone marveled.

Luke 8:26-39

And they sailed to the country of Gadara, lying opposite Galilee. When He went ashore, a man from the city met Him, possessed by demons for a long time, and who did not wear clothes, and lived not in a house, but in tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice: What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torment me. For Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out of this man, because he tormented him for a long time, so that he was bound with chains and bands, saving him; but he broke the bands and was driven by a demon into the wilderness. Jesus asked him: What is your name? He said legion, because many demons had entered into him. And they asked Jesus not to command them to go into the abyss. Right there on the mountain a large herd of pigs grazed; and the demons asked Him to let them enter into them. He allowed them. The demons, coming out of the man, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake and drowned. The shepherds, seeing what had happened, ran and told the story in the city and in the villages. And they went out to see what had happened; and when they came to Jesus, they found a man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and of sound mind; and were horrified. And those who saw it told them how the demon-possessed one was healed. And all the people of the Gadara neighborhood asked Him to depart from them, because they were seized with great fear. He entered the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons came out asked Him to be with Him. But Jesus let him go, saying: Return to your house and tell what God has done for you. He went and preached throughout the city what Jesus had done for him.

5. Jesus cast out seven evil spirits from Mary Magdalene.

Mk 16.9

Rising early on the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he cast out seven demons.

6. Jesus casts out an evil spirit from a heathen daughter at a distance.

Mark 7:24-30

Matthew 15:21-28

7. Jesus performs an exorcism on the Sabbath day; cast out the spirit of infirmity.

Luke 13:10-13

In one of the synagogues He taught on the Sabbath. There was a woman there who had had a spirit of weakness for eighteen years; she was crouched and could not straighten up. Jesus, seeing her, called her and said to her: woman! you are freed from your disease. And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and began to praise God.

8. Jesus continues to heal and deliver beyond the threat of death.

Lk 13:31-32

On that day some of the Pharisees came and said to Him, Get out and get away from here, for Herod wants to kill You. And he said to them: Go, tell this fox: Behold, I cast out demons and work healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will finish

9. Jesus casts out an evil spirit from a mute person who then regained his voice. The Pharisees reproach Jesus for using the power of the prince of demons, Beelzebub.

When they were going out, they brought to Him a mute demon-possessed man. And when the demon was cast out, the mute began to speak. And the people, wondering, said: Never had such a thing happened in Israel. And the Pharisees said: He casts out demons by the power of the prince of demons. And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing every sickness and every infirmity among the people. Seeing the crowds of people, He had pity on them, because they were exhausted and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples: the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

They come to the house; and again the people came together, so that it was impossible for them even to eat bread. And when his neighbors heard him, they went to take him, for they said that he had lost his temper. And the scribes who came from Jerusalem said that He had Beelzebub in Himself and that He cast out demons by the power of the prince of demons. And calling them, he spoke to them in parables: How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand; and if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand; and if Satan has risen up against himself and divided himself, he cannot stand, but his end has come. No one entering the house of a strong man can plunder his things, unless he first binds the strong man, and then he plunders his house.

10. Jesus casts out the evil spirit that causes blindness and dumbness. He says that he casts out evil spirits by the power of the Spirit of God.

Then they brought to Him a demon-possessed, blind and dumb; and healed him, so that the blind and dumb man both spoke and saw. And all the people marveled, and said, Is this not Christ, the son of David? The Pharisees, hearing this, said: He does not cast out demons except by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons. But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself will be desolate; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand. And if Satan casts out Satan, then he is divided with himself: how will his kingdom stand? And if I cast out demons by the power of Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then surely the Kingdom of God has reached you. Or, how can anyone enter the house of a strong man and plunder his things, unless he first binds the strong man? and then he will plunder his house. He who is not with Me is against Me; and whoever does not gather with me, he squanders.

11. Casting out evil spirits is a sign of the coming of the Kingdom of God.

Luke 11:14-20

One day He cast out a demon that was mute; and when the demon came out, the mute began to speak; and the people were surprised. Some of them said: He casts out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons. And others, tempting, demanded from Him a sign from heaven. But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and a house divided against itself will fall; But if Satan also be divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? but you say that I cast out demons by the power of Beelzebub; And if by the power of Beelzebub I cast out demons, by what power do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, then, of course, the Kingdom of God has reached you.

Luke 7:18-23

And his disciples told John of all this. John, having called two of his disciples, sent to Jesus to ask: Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect another? They came to Jesus and said: John the Baptist sent us to you to ask: Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect another? And at this time He healed many from diseases and ailments and from evil spirits, and gave sight to many blind people. And Jesus answered and said to them: Go, tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor preach the gospel; and blessed is he who is not offended by me!

II. Disciples of Jesus free from evil spirits

1. Twelve Apostles, called by Christ to cast out evil spirits.

Mt 10:1-8

And calling His twelve disciples, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out and heal every sickness and every infirmity. The names of the Twelve Apostles are these: the first Simon, called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, James Zebedee and John, his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, James Alpheus and Leoway, called Thaddeus, Simon the Canaanite and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Jesus sent these twelve, and commanded them, saying: Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter into the city of the Samaritans; but go especially to the lost sheep of the house of Israel; as you go, preach that the kingdom of heaven is at hand; heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons; Received as a gift, give as a gift.

Luke 9:1

Having called the twelve, he gave power and authority over all demons and to heal from diseases.

Mark 3:14-19

And he appointed twelve of them, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach, and that they might have power to heal sickness and cast out demons; appointed Simon, giving him the names of Peter, James of Zebedee and John, the brother of James, giving them the names of Boanerges, that is, "sons of thunder", Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James Alpheus, Thaddeus, Simon Zebedee and Judas Iscariot, who and betrayed him.

Mark 6:7

And having called twelve, he began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over the unclean spirits.

2. Disciples of Jesus deliver and heal.

Luke 10:17-20

The seventy disciples returned with joy and said: Lord! and demons obey us in your name. He said to them: I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning; Behold, I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and on all the power of the enemy, and nothing will harm you; however, do not rejoice that the spirits obey you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

3. Disciples' exorcisms are not always successful - some evil spirits can be driven out by prayer and fasting. The service of liberation requires knowledge, discrimination and austerity.

Luke 9:37-43

The next day, when they came down from the mountain, many people met Him. Suddenly one of the people exclaimed: Teacher! I beg you to look at my son, he is alone with me: his breath seizes, and he suddenly cries out, and torments him, so that he emits foam; and forcibly retreats from him, exhausting him. I asked your disciples to cast him out, and they could not. Jesus, answering, said: O unfaithful and perverted generation! how long will I be with you and endure you? bring your son here. While he was still walking, the demon threw him down and began to beat him; but Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him to his father. And everyone marveled at the greatness of God.

4. After the Resurrection, Jesus instructs the Apostle to further deliver people from evil spirits.

Mark 16:15-18

And he said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take snakes; and if they drink something deadly, it will not harm them; lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.

5. The ministry of deliverance continues after the Resurrection of Jesus.

Mark 6:12,13

They went and preached repentance; they cast out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

6. The deliverance from evil spirits performed by the Apostles has a general and public character.

Acts 5:16

Many of the surrounding cities also converged on Jerusalem, carrying the sick and those possessed by unclean spirits, who were all healed.

7. Apostles heal and deliver from evil spirits; for people, this is evidence of the veracity of faith.

Acts 5:12-16

By the hands of the Apostles, many signs and wonders were performed among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. Of outsiders, none dared to stick to them, and the people glorified them. The believers, more and more, joined the Lord, many men and women, so they carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and beds, so that at least the shadow of the passing Peter would overshadow one of them. Many of the surrounding cities also converged on Jerusalem, carrying the sick and those possessed by unclean spirits, who were all healed.

8. St. Peter teaches that Jesus came to deliver from the power of the devil.

Acts 10:37,38

You know what happened throughout Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism preached by John: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.

9. Other Christians join the ministry of liberation, in particular St. Paul. St. Paul casts out an evil spirit from a slave, who, by divination, brought profit to her masters.

Acts 16:16-24

It happened that when we were going to the house of prayer, we met a servant girl, possessed by the spirit of divination, who, through divination, brought a great income to her masters. As she followed Paul and us, she cried out, saying: These people are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation. She did this for many days. Paul, indignant, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And the spirit went out at the same hour. Then her masters, seeing that the hope of their income had disappeared, seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the square to the rulers. And leading them to the governors, they said: These people, being Jews, are disturbing our city and preaching customs that we Romans should neither accept nor practice. The people also rebelled against them, and the governors, tearing off their clothes, ordered them to be beaten with sticks and, having given them many blows, threw them into prison, ordering the prison guard to guard them tightly. Having received such an order, he threw them into the inner dungeon and hammered their feet into a block.

10. People laid on the sick even handkerchiefs and aprons from the body of St. Paul, and thus healing and deliverance from evil spirits took place.

Acts 19:11,12

But God worked many miracles with the hands of Paul, so that handkerchiefs and aprons from his body were placed on the sick, and their illnesses ceased, and evil spirits came out of them.

11. Philip casts out evil spirits in Samaria.

Acts 8:6-8

The people unanimously listened to what Philip said, hearing and seeing what miracles he worked. For unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed by them with a great cry, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.

III. Release conditions

1. Jesus says that after being freed from an evil spirit, a person must cleanse his soul from sin, otherwise the evil spirit may return with other spirits and worsen the person's condition.

Matthew 12:43-45

When an unclean spirit comes out of a person, it walks through waterless places, seeking rest, and does not find it; then he said, I will return to my house from whence I came out. And when he comes, he finds him unoccupied, swept and cleaned; then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits worse than himself, and having entered, dwell there; and for that person the last is worse than the first. So it will be with this evil race.

Luke 11:24-26

When the unclean spirit comes out of a person, he walks through dry places, seeking rest, and, not finding it, says: I will return to my house from where I came out; and when he comes, he finds it swept and tidied up; then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more evil than himself, and having entered they dwell there, and the last for that man is worse than the first.

2. Jesus, in casting out the evil spirit, emphasizes the role of faith in deliverance.

Matthew 15:21-28

And going out from there, Jesus withdrew into the countries of Tire and Sidon. And so, the Canaanite woman, coming out of those places, cried out to Him: have mercy on me, Lord, son of David, my daughter is cruelly raging. But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples, approaching, asked Him: Let her go, because she is screaming after us. He answered and said, I have only been sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And she, coming up, bowed to Him and said: Lord! help me. He answered and said, It is not good to take bread from the children and throw it to the dogs. She said: yes, Lord! but dogs also eat the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters. Then Jesus said to her in answer: O woman! great is thy faith; let it be to you as you wish. And her daughter was healed in that hour.

Mark 7:24-30

And departing thence, he came into the regions of Tyre, and Sidon; and entering the house, he did not want anyone to know; but he couldn't hide. For a woman whose daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit heard about him, and when she came, she fell at his feet; and that woman was a pagan, a Syro-Phoenician by birth; and asked Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. But Jesus said to her, First let the children be satisfied, for it is not good to take bread from the children and throw it to the dogs. And she said to Him in answer: Yes, Lord; but the dogs under the table eat the crumbs of the children. And he said to her: for this word, go; the demon has left your daughter. And, having come to her house, she found that the demon had gone out and her daughter was lying on the bed.

3. Jesus casts out an evil spirit from a boy. Jesus says that deliverance depends on faith, prayer and fasting.

Mark 9:14-29

When he came to the disciples, he saw a lot of people around them and scribes arguing with them. Immediately, when they saw Him, all the people were amazed, and, running up, greeted Him. He asked the scribes: Why are you arguing with them? One of the people said in response: Master! I brought to Thee my son, possessed by a dumb spirit: wherever he seizes him, he throws him to the ground, and he emits foam, and gnashes his teeth, and freezes. I told your disciples to cast him out, and they could not. Answering him, Jesus said: O unfaithful generation! how long will I be with you? how long can I bear you? Bring him to Me. And they brought him to Him. As soon as the demoniac saw Him, the spirit shook him; he fell to the ground and rolled around, emitting foam. And Jesus asked his father, How long ago did this happen to him? He said: since childhood; and many times the spirit threw him both into fire and into water to destroy him; but, if you can, have pity on us and help us. Jesus said to him: If you can believe a little, all things are possible to him who believes. And immediately the father of the lad exclaimed with tears: I believe, Lord! help my unbelief. Jesus, seeing that the people were fleeing, rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him: dumb and deaf spirit! I command you to leave it and do not enter it again. yelling and shaking him violently, he went out; and he became as dead, so that many said that he was dead. But Jesus, taking him by the hand, lifted him up; and he got up. And as Jesus entered the house, His disciples asked Him in private: Why couldn't we cast him out? And he said to them: This generation cannot come out except by prayer and fasting.

Matthew 17:14-21

When they came to the people, a man came up to Him and, kneeling before Him, said: Lord! have mercy on my son; he rages on the new moon and suffers greatly, for he often throws himself into fire and often into water, I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not heal him. Jesus, answering, said: O unfaithful and perverted generation! how long will I be with you? how long can I bear you? bring him here to Me. And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him; and the lad was healed in that hour. Then the disciples, approaching Jesus in private, said: Why couldn't we cast him out? Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, and say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you; this kind is driven out only by prayer and fasting.

IV. Other exorcists

1. The ministry of deliverance requires a person to do the will of God. Those who do iniquity will not enter the Kingdom of God.

Mt 7:21-23

Not everyone who says to me: “Lord! Lord!” will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in Heaven. Many will say to Me in that day: Lord! God! Have we not prophesied in Your name? and did they not cast out demons in your name? and did not many miracles work in your name? And then I will declare to them: I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of iniquity.

2. A non-Christian casts out evil spirits. Jesus replies that he can do this, as this is a confirmation of the Messiahship.

Mk 9, 38-40

At this John said: Teacher! we have seen a man who casts out demons in your name, and does not follow us; and forbade him, because he does not follow us. Jesus said: do not forbid him, for no one who has done a miracle in my name can soon slander me. For whoever is not against you is for you. And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you are Christ's, I tell you truly, he will not lose his reward.

3. Exorcisms performed by those who do not believe in Jesus end in failure. The seven sons of Skeva are beaten by an evil spirit.

Acts 19:13-17

Even some of the wandering Jewish exorcists began to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying: We conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches. This was done by some seven sons of the Jewish high priest Skeva. But the evil spirit answered and said: I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you? And a man in whom there was an evil spirit rushed at them, and, having overcome them, took such power over them that they, naked and beaten, ran out of that house. This became known to all the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, and fear fell on all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

History of exorcism

exorcism, as a ritual, has been conducted since the ancient era. In different cultures, people believed that the devil's power constantly breaks into a person's life, because exorcism was considered a daily action. exorcism - the procedure for expelling demons and other supernatural beings from a person possessed by them with the help of prayers, rituals.

In theological science, exorcism is the expulsion from the human body of evil spirits, minions of the Prince of Darkness, with the help of a certain religious ritual. This phenomenon is very ancient and goes back to the very origins of Christianity.

In the Gospel, the exorcism of demons is given a fairly significant place. Jesus Christ, wandering in Galilee, repeatedly cast out unclean spirits from the afflicted. One of the most famous biblical stories concerning the practice of exorcism tells how Jesus cast demons out of a certain man and instilled them into a herd of pigs. Animals, unable to bear the "neighborhood" with the spirits of malice, rushed into the abyss. "What is your name?" - the Savior asked the evil spirits before the exile. “My name is legion” (that is, many), the demons answered. Thus, in the Holy Scriptures for the first time it is mentioned that a person can be possessed by many demons at once.

The ability to cast out demons is a gift from God, which is given on the steps of asceticism and perfection. Holy ascetics lead a strict lifestyle, being in fasting and constant prayer. At the same time, having passed the path of internal warfare, with the help of God, they resisted their passions and therefore are able to pray for another person who is not yet able to do this.

It is possible to distinguish true ascetics who have a gift from self-important people by the following sign: whether a person is looking for fame and recognition of people and whether he thinks of himself as worthy of receiving a gift. The fathers also warned that even those who have the gift of healing and casting out demons can become proud and fall. As for the most obsessed person, he, of course, cannot fast and pray in a state of strong influence. But for those who are not possessed by an evil spirit, but only succumb to the enemy's suggestion, fasting and prayer are necessary.

(From the personal archive of Hieromonk Panteleimon (Ledin))

Fragment of a newspaper publication about a famous St. Petersburg priest

“The service has begun. People huddled together to hear better about. Joseph. It was quiet and good... Suddenly there was a wild, downright bestial howl. It lasted so long and on such a high note that it seemed that a living being was so incapable of screaming. "Maybe it's a siren?" I thought and looked around. Behind me stood a woman in a black headscarf. Her face was meaningless, her eyes stopped... And then it began! I was at the very epicenter of the frenzy. There were screams from all sides. Nearby, a woman furiously banged her head against a ledge. "Men, help!" - there was a cry. An elderly overweight woman had a seizure: some terrible force twisted and scattered her arms and legs - she could not be restrained. She bellowed and fought off someone invisible, her face was covered with sweat.
I didn’t want to believe that all this was really and seriously happening, but there could be no doubt - I saw the genuine suffering of people. . The demons obviously did not like this temple. “I dragged it here again,” a hoarse male voice escaped from the woman. I have already begun to understand that she has nothing to do with it, this is the demon sitting in her, and she scolds her. By the end of the service, the demons were completely “furious” “Do not conjure, Oska, do not conjure!” they yelled. From all corners of the church, hoarse, sloppy voices spewed swear words. Father Joseph began to sprinkle the parishioners and the sick with holy water. When it hit the face of the possessed woman standing next to me, she passed out and began to fall on her back... One girl could not come to her senses, and the assistants asked for help. Joseph to read over it additionally. The priest began to read. We were standing one and a half meters from the demoniac. Suddenly, everyone smelled a strong smell of burnt sulfur. "Look, there's smoke coming out of her nostrils!" someone shouted. We really saw a thin black trickle of “The devil is coming out!” someone whispered...”

To Father Fr. N. a group of believers came for spiritual advice and a request for prayers. After talking with the elder, they wanted to take a blessing on the way back. “Let's pray,” he stopped them, and only after praying “For travelers” did he bless them to leave. After their departure, the demon, through the sick woman standing nearby, yelled: “Why did you pray? He ruined everything for us! “Ours” have already met them at the turn of the highway with slandered earth in order to make an accident.

I anoint the sick with oil, yelling at the whole camp:
- Burns, burns! I burn all! Let go, that's enough, what are you?! One demon spoke through the mouth of a sick woman:
- That's it, I'm going out, I won't go to A-ke (sorceress), I found a girl, I'll go into her: beautiful, white, smokes and drinks
Me: - And the Lord will allow?
There was a screech and cries: it is hateful for the enemy to hear about his weakness and that without the will of God he can do nothing

Saturday coincided with the Feast of the Nativity of Christ. They served at night, and at 2 pm a prayer service for the sick. There was a new one among the others, I went up to her to check her reliquaries. Bes spoke:
- Get away, and so tired
- What were you doing?
“I worked all night and was very tired, move away!” I walked around the whole city, even in the cathedral I was ...
- Why?
- He turned everyone there against each other: in the altar everyone quarreled
- I thought you were sleeping at night
- What are you?! At night, we have the most work: fights, drunkenness, murders, debauchery ... Without us, nothing happens. And we enter at night: when they fall asleep without a cross, prayers, drunk ...

At the prayer service I bring the reliquary to the sick:
- N. demon: “What, have you lost your mind? How much can you go out? And so nothing was left of me, all terrible, shabby...”
- Me: "Come out, let's look at you"
- N. bes: “What are you doing! Everyone will run away from fear, no one will go to church... It's too early for me to leave. What do you think, if I go out, it will be easier for me? And how other demons will beat me, choke me! Not the way I n soul, worse”
- N. demon: “I'm tired of your crosses! Do not you understand? That N. is bad, even if he took pity on her, a fool, brainless. Why is she listening to you, you fool? She has become completely stupid: she prays, bows, cries about sins, ugh (spitting) fool! I hate you, you and her. If I go out, I'll do this to you... you can't even imagine...”

The Orthodox calendar for 1997 was published with my article “Who, who lives in the tower?”
The reaction of demons through the mouth of the sick:
- I would tear you apart from N for this calendar. Everything about our intrigues ... reveal everything!
- Where did the bishop look? Is he out of his mind? Yes, we will arrange this for him ... How dare he miss this?
- I'm amazed, how can you miss this? Who printed it?

One of our patients was allergic to dill, parsley, etc. She absolutely could not eat salads, because. a rash and swelling began, and the meal ended in hospitalization. Doctors, however, could not understand why the body's reaction to this, and not to something else. After several months of going to our temple, she calmly ate any salad. The devil often spoke through her mouth: “ I hate this bastard, I want meat!“Thus, the enemy pushed the patient to break the fast, but after the impact of the shrine and incantations, he could not manifest himself the way he wanted.

A man, about forty-five years old, came to us from afar, from the Urals. Confusedly, he asks: “Check me, father, I’m very sick, I’m drying up, and you, they say, can say whether I need to report or not.”
- What do you think?
- I do not know. What is a report?
I put reliquaries on him, and suddenly his stomach swells terribly and begins to “shake”, as if someone is beating in it. He looks at me in surprise and, pointing his finger at my stomach, asks:
- What is it?
- Bes. This is the shrine, and here it is
- Which? - a man in amazement
- We'll find out tomorrow. And what is a report, and who is sitting ..
After the Sabbath prayer service, at which he was very ill: all the intestines turned out with vomiting, much became clear and understandable to him. He left differently, not the same as he came: what he had to experience and go through changed his concepts of life, gave him “spiritual volume”. And his demon was a “behemoth” and had been sitting for a long time.
