Trembling tree. What tree makes noise without wind? No one scares, but she is trembling. What kind of tree stands: There is no wind, but the leaf is trembling? aspen. Trembling tree 5 letters
“The quivering aspen is beautiful and noticeable only in autumn: its leaves are covered with gold and crimson; and, brightly different from the greenery of other trees, it gives a lot of charm and variety to the forest during autumn leaf fall.
I.S. Turgenev
In botany, aspen is known under the name Populus tremula - "trembling poplar". This Latin name was assigned to the aspen by Carl Linnaeus, based on its external signs (populus - poplar, tremula - tremble).
In the aspen forest, even in calm weather, the leaves rustle incessantly. And it is worth blowing a light breeze, as the noise of foliage fills the entire forest. Aspen leaves are rounded, sit on a long, flattened petiole, and at the slightest movement of air they begin to sway, hitting each other.
Aspen is extremely widespread in Russia - from the northern forests to the Caucasus and from the shores of the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
The aspen is well recognizable, its slender trunks are dark gray below, and above, where the crown is, silver-green. It rarely forms pure stands, more often it is part of mixed forests along with birch and spruce. Also, aspen forests are found as secondary, temporary, arising in places of felling or after fires.
Aspen has many different species forms. So, for example, in aspen trees you can often find trees with green or gray bark. In the latter, the base of the trunks is usually much darker than in green-barked aspens. The difference in coloration is especially noticeable in spring, before flowering, during intensive sap flow. Individual trees also differ in the timing of leaf blooming, so in the spring you can see “early” and “late” specimens in terms of the time the leaves appear.
In addition, there are individuals that are characterized by vigorous growth and are considered "giants". The crown of an adult aspen is powerful, but at the same time openwork, letting in a lot of light. The branches are fragile, fragile, they are easily broken off by the wind or under the weight of adhering snow.
Aspen bears fruit very often, almost annually. The fruits are green multi-seeded capsules. When they burst, the seeds scatter in all directions. Dressed in tiny balls of “cotton wool”, they fly very far and cover the damp earth, and if the root manages to pass through the layer of last year’s leaves, a new young tree will grow.
But more often aspens reproduce by root offspring. Sometimes, in place of a felled tree, several dozen new thin aspens grow. It often happens that a whole grove of aspens is the offspring of several trees, on the roots of which young aspens have sprung up. Young trees are characterized by rapid growth - in the first year they reach a height of 1.5-2 m.
Interestingly, in young shoots growing from root offspring, the leaves are completely different from the leaves of an adult tree. They are much larger (up to 30 cm long), softer, slightly pubescent, with a pointed top and more reminiscent of enlarged poplar leaves.
Anyone who loves spring woodcock hunting knows well how quickly aspen clearings overgrow. In young aspen forests, there are often good woodcock tractions, but several years pass, and it is already difficult to find a place where one could stand.
The rapid growth of aspen lasts up to 50-60 years, after which it decreases quite a lot. Some of its trees in favorable growth conditions reach 35 m in height and 100 cm in thickness.
The life span of an aspen is short, 60-80, rarely 100 years. The short life of trees is associated with a high vulnerability to pathogens and, first of all, wood-destroying fungi. Not a single tree in our forests suffers more from tinder fungus than aspen.
Sometimes in the aspen forest it is impossible to find a single tree that is not affected by the fungus. By the age of 80, rot is so widespread in the stand and the wood is destroyed to such an extent that strong winds begin to break out the trunks.
By the age of 100-120, only individual trees remain in the forest. It is difficult to find aspen older than 150 years, although in old, untouched forests, there were aspens that lived up to 250 years. What is bad for foresters is good for wildlife. Hollows are shelters for many forest animals and birds. In them, squirrels breed their offspring. The pine marten sits in hollows during the day, warming up in severe frosts. On old aspens growing along the banks of reservoirs, goldeneyes willingly settle, incubating their eggs in hollows.
Aspen is especially beautiful in autumn: its leaves are either yellow, or turning pink, or fiery red, and sometimes purple with crimson. Aspen always has a special smell. Even when the leaves from the trees fly around, it is pleasant to be in it. The bitter smell of vanilla from fallen leaves accompanies hunters and mushroom pickers.
Aspen wood does not have a clearly defined core. Properly dried, it is inferior in strength only to oak and pine. From thick aspen trunks in many places, fishermen made light single-deck boats, or aspens. To do this, they first hollowed out the middle in the log, filled it with water and steamed it, throwing red-hot stones into the water. Then the sides that became flexible were finally hemmed and parted with the help of struts.
Aspen is also used to make skis, sleigh runners, light and durable dishes. To make a carved ladle or spoon, craftsmen steamed blanks in boiling water. After that, the wood is cut with sharp tools easily.
It is believed that cabbage soup and pickles do not sour in aspen dishes, since there are substances in its wood that kill putrefactive bacteria. It is no coincidence that in the northern villages housewives put aspen logs in sauerkraut.
Aspen wood is also good because it stays in water for a long time. Since ancient times in Russia, well log cabins were knitted from aspen logs. Aspen wood does not care for long autumn rains, and stormy summer showers. That is why the domes of the northern Russian churches were covered only with aspen plowshare - oblong, sometimes slightly curved figured aspen planks, usually resembling a spatula or a flat ledge pyramid in shape.
The towers and the Red Chamber of the Kremlin in Rostov the Great, the Intercession and Transfiguration Churches of the Kizhi Island on Lake Onega, the chapel of the Pyatnitsky Well in Sergiev Posad, erected in the 17th-18th centuries, are covered with aspen plowshares. From the sun and rain, the plowshare becomes silvery over time. Foreigners who first saw the domes of churches mistook an aspen plowshare shining in the sun for silver.
But, in addition to economic and aesthetic value, aspen is extremely important for animals living in Russian forests. Since it forms very long and rather numerous superficial roots, extending from the center to a distance of up to 20 m or more, buds are laid on the upper side of the root system, forming new shoots.
These offspring, especially in large numbers, are formed after felling a tree and appear in a small amount during the life of a tree (this is why feeding animals with aspen does not lead to the disappearance of aspen even with regular felling).
The huge surface distribution of the roots contributes to the fact that if 2-3 dozen adult aspens per hectare of forest are left after felling, they form a dense young aspen of vegetative origin. And it is precisely such places that become the main winter feeding stations for elk, white hare.
In winter, and more often closer to spring, in the aspen you can find fallen trees with dazzling white trunks and branches, as if carved from ivory. This is the work of hares and moose. Aspen bark for them in winter is a great delicacy.
In the places of beaver settlements, one can see how these tireless workers, first of all, strive to knock down the aspen. They are not embarrassed by oversized trunks. They spend more than one night to fell a tree and provide themselves with food for a long time.
Aspen bark, in addition to valuable nutrients, contains glycerin, esters, acids, antibiotics and biostimulants, tannins. As shown by special studies conducted on elk farms, without aspen bark, as well as willow and mountain ash bark, which contain a large amount of tannins, moose quickly die.
Buds, leaves and young shoots are among the main food for capercaillie, black grouse, ptarmigan. If in winter the vegetative and generative buds of aspen are eaten in small quantities by all grouse, then when the flowering male and female catkins stretch out, capercaillie, black grouse and hazel grouse fly to aspens and fill the goiter with only catkins.
These pollen-filled purple anthers resembling hairy caterpillars are highly nutritious. Once the catkins have dispersed their pollen, the ratio of grouse birds to aspen catkins changes dramatically; but now they have another delicacy - tender aspen leaves.
From the second half of August, wood grouses begin to fly out at dawn to aspen forests and eat aspen leaves (with the onset of autumn cold weather, their nutritional value increases - sugar content). At first, young birds fly out, then copalugas, and roosters start eating aspen leaves later than the rest - in September.

Russian aspen gives satin white, clean wood, it is light, soft, and pricks well. From ancient times in Russia, tubs, stools, roofing shingles, well log cabins were made from aspen. Its wood is the most valuable raw material for the production of plywood, matches, cellulose, paper, rayon, and various plastics. Aspen is well stained, impregnated with varnishes, paints, antiseptics. In urban construction, aspen replaces oak and beech when laying parquets, and furniture is also made from it. For those who love to read! SCARY ASPEN You must have noticed - all the trees in the forest stand quietly, their branches do not move. And only one aspen trembles. The most inconspicuous breeze dies - and the leaves are already spinning, fussing. They are suspended on long petioles. As if on flexible strings. As if on purpose they were made like a weather vane - to catch the wind.
