How to cast a demon out of a person? Orthodox exorcism in the modern church

Sermon on the Healing of the Possessed Report in the Temple, Church, Monastery (list where reports are held)

History of exorcism

exorcism, as a ritual, has been conducted since the ancient era. In different cultures, people believed that the devil's power constantly breaks into a person's life, because exorcism was considered a daily action. exorcism - the procedure for expelling demons and other supernatural beings from a person possessed by them with the help of prayers, rituals.

In theological science, exorcism is the expulsion from the human body of evil spirits, minions of the Prince of Darkness, with the help of a certain religious ritual. This phenomenon is very ancient and goes back to the very origins of Christianity.

In the Gospel, the exorcism of demons is given a fairly significant place. Jesus Christ, wandering in Galilee, repeatedly cast out unclean spirits from the afflicted. One of the most famous biblical stories concerning the practice of exorcism tells how Jesus cast demons out of a certain man and instilled them into a herd of pigs. Animals, unable to bear the "neighborhood" with the spirits of malice, rushed into the abyss. "What is your name?" - the Savior asked the evil spirits before the exile. “My name is legion” (that is, many), the demons answered. Thus, in the Holy Scriptures for the first time it is mentioned that a person can be possessed by many demons at once.

The ability to cast out demons is a gift from God, which is given on the steps of asceticism and perfection. Holy ascetics lead a strict lifestyle, being in fasting and constant prayer. At the same time, having passed the path of internal warfare, with the help of God, they resisted their passions and therefore are able to pray for another person who is not yet able to do this.

It is possible to distinguish true ascetics who have a gift from self-important people by the following sign: whether a person is looking for fame and recognition of people and whether he thinks of himself as worthy of receiving a gift. The fathers also warned that even those who have the gift of healing and casting out demons can become proud and fall. As for the most obsessed person, he, of course, cannot fast and pray in a state of strong influence. But for those who are not possessed by an evil spirit, but only succumb to the enemy's suggestion, fasting and prayer are necessary.

Fragment of a newspaper publication about a famous St. Petersburg priest

“The service has begun. People huddled together to hear better about. Joseph. It was quiet and good... Suddenly there was a wild, downright bestial howl. It lasted so long and on such a high note that it seemed that a living being was so incapable of screaming. "Maybe it's a siren?" I thought and looked around. Behind me stood a woman in a black headscarf. Her face was meaningless, her eyes stopped... And then it began! I was at the very epicenter of the frenzy. There were screams from all sides. Nearby, a woman furiously banged her head against a ledge. "Men, help!" - there was a cry. An elderly overweight woman had a seizure: some terrible force twisted and scattered her arms and legs - she could not be restrained. She bellowed and fought off someone invisible, her face was covered with sweat.
I didn’t want to believe that all this was really and seriously happening, but there could be no doubt - I saw the genuine suffering of people. . The demons obviously did not like this temple. “I dragged it here again,” a hoarse male voice escaped from the woman. I have already begun to understand that she has nothing to do with it, this is the demon sitting in her, and she scolds her. By the end of the service, the demons were completely “furious” “Do not conjure, Oska, do not conjure!” they yelled. From all corners of the church, hoarse, sloppy voices spewed swear words. Father Joseph began to sprinkle the parishioners and the sick with holy water. When it hit the face of the possessed woman standing next to me, she passed out and began to fall on her back... One girl could not come to her senses, and the assistants asked for help. Joseph to read over it additionally. The priest began to read. We were standing one and a half meters from the demoniac. Suddenly, everyone smelled a strong smell of burnt sulfur. "Look, there's smoke coming out of her nostrils!" someone shouted. We really saw a thin black trickle of “The devil is coming out!” someone whispered...”

To Father Fr. N. a group of believers came for spiritual advice and a request for prayers. After talking with the elder, they wanted to take a blessing on the way back. “Let's pray,” he stopped them, and only after praying “For travelers” did he bless them to leave. After their departure, the demon, through the sick woman standing nearby, yelled: “Why did you pray? He ruined everything for us! “Ours” have already met them at the turn of the highway with slandered earth in order to make an accident.

I anoint the sick with oil, yelling at the whole camp:
- Burns, burns! I burn all! Let go, that's enough, what are you?! One demon spoke through the mouth of a sick woman:
- That's it, I'm going out, I won't go to A-ke (sorceress), I found a girl, I'll go into her: beautiful, white, smokes and drinks
Me: - And the Lord will allow?
There was a screech and cries: it is hateful for the enemy to hear about his weakness and that without the will of God he can do nothing

Saturday coincided with the Feast of the Nativity of Christ. They served at night, and at 2 pm a prayer service for the sick. There was a new one among the others, I went up to her to check her reliquaries. Bes spoke:
- Get away, and so tired
- What were you doing?
“I worked all night and was very tired, move away!” I walked around the whole city, even in the cathedral I was ...
- What for?
- He turned everyone there against each other: in the altar everyone quarreled
- I thought you were sleeping at night
- What are you?! At night, we have the most work: fights, drunkenness, murders, debauchery ... Without us, nothing happens. And we enter at night: when they fall asleep without a cross, prayers, drunk ...

At the prayer service I bring the reliquary to the sick:
- N. demon: “What, have you lost your mind? How much can you go out? And so nothing was left of me, all terrible, shabby...”
- Me: "Come out, let's look at you"
- N. bes: “What are you doing! Everyone will run away from fear, no one will go to church... It's too early for me to leave. What do you think, if I go out, it will be easier for me? And how other demons will beat me, choke me! Not the way I n soul, worse”
- N. demon: “I'm tired of your crosses! Do not you understand? That N. is bad, even if he took pity on her, a fool, brainless. Why is she listening to you, you fool? She has become completely stupid: she prays, bows, cries about sins, ugh (spitting) fool! I hate you, you and her. If I go out, I'll do this to you... you can't even imagine...”

The Orthodox calendar for 1997 was published with my article “Who, who lives in the tower?”
The reaction of demons through the mouth of the sick:
- I would tear you apart from N for this calendar. Everything about our intrigues ... reveal everything!
- Where did the bishop look? Is he out of his mind? Yes, we will arrange this for him ... How dare he miss this?
- I'm amazed, how can you miss this? Who printed it?

One of our patients was allergic to dill, parsley, etc. She absolutely could not eat salads, because. a rash and swelling began, and the meal ended in hospitalization. Doctors, however, could not understand why the body's reaction to this, and not to something else. After several months of going to our temple, she calmly ate any salad. The devil often spoke through her mouth: “ I hate this bastard, I want meat!” Thus, the enemy pushed the patient to break the fast, but after the impact of the shrine and incantational prayers, he could not manifest himself the way he wanted.

A man, about forty-five years old, came to us from afar, from the Urals. Confusedly, he asks: “Check me, father, I’m very sick, I’m drying up, and you, they say, can say whether I need to report or not.”
- What do you think?
- I do not know. What is a report?
I put reliquaries on him, and suddenly his stomach swells terribly and begins to “shake”, as if someone is beating in it. He looks at me in surprise and, pointing his finger at my stomach, asks:
- What is it?
- Bes. This is the shrine, and here it is
- Which? - a man in amazement
- We'll find out tomorrow. And what is a report, and who is sitting ..
After the Sabbath prayer service, at which he was very ill: all the intestines turned out with vomiting, much became clear and understandable to him. He left differently, not the same as he came: what he had to experience and go through changed his concepts of life, gave him “spiritual volume”. And his demon was a “behemoth” and had been sitting for a long time.

In the Orthodox tradition, Jesus Christ is considered the first person to cast out demons from the possessed. Today, the priest receives such an oral “appointment” from a more senior priest, his confessor, or an experienced, but already elderly exorcist. The latter, as it were, transfers this responsibility to his follower.

How to become obsessed

In Orthodoxy, it is believed that a person can become possessed by evil spirits - turn into a kind of "vessel" for one or even several champions of the devil - due to some unseemly deeds. These include fortune-telling, communication with fortune-tellers, psychics and any other people who offer to establish a connection with otherworldly forces. By opening invisible doors to another world, a person thereby makes his soul defenseless against the machinations of demons and their supreme patron, the Prince of Darkness.

It is possible to notice obsession in ordinary life only in the case of some extreme manifestations. Usually it is revealed when a person comes to the temple of God. This can happen right during the service. The demon inside a person begins to react to the sprinkling of holy water, the words of prayers and hymns, the overshadowing of the cross and other moments of the service. At the same time, the demoniac behaves inappropriately and inconsistently with the place in which he is. He starts cursing the church, swearing, growling, howling, shaking, rolling on the floor, etc.

Exorcism Procedure

After demon possession has manifested itself, it is necessary to perform an exorcism ritual. It is believed that only a priest who is at the upper levels of perfection and asceticism can conduct it. The ritual consists in carrying out certain actions and reading prayers over the demoniac, who himself is not capable of pronouncing the words of Holy Scripture (this is actively opposed by the spirit that has inhabited him). The very procedure of exorcism in Orthodoxy is called the “rite of reprimand” from the word “read” a prayer.

A person suffering from demons must be brought to the reprimand with a pectoral cross put on him. The day before the service he should fast. Unbaptized people are not allowed to reprimand. During the service of the possessed, the priest abundantly sprinkles holy water and fumigates with incense. After that, he carefully recites certain prayers over it. This must be done with extreme concentration, calling on God with all your heart and believing in his blessing. Every word spoken during this procedure is very important. And the exorcism itself in any religion is considered a special mission, a kind of obedience.

Throughout the reprimand, the priest reads Bible texts and prayers, baptizes and sprinkles the possessed with holy water until he gets better. The list of prayers is extensive. These are “Our Father”, “Prayer against demonic machinations”, “Prayer to the Holy Spirit”, Psalm 90, Psalm 50, etc. There are about several dozen such saving prayers in total. The reprimand can last quite a long time, sometimes a couple of hours, until the demon finally leaves the body of the sufferer.

... "In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit"... The crucifix in the hands of the priest only touched the head of a woman of 40-45 years old. And suddenly... a terrible animal roar shook the reverent silence of the temple. The woman was literally thrown away from the cross by an unknown but terrible force. With all her might, her portly body collapsed to the floor and thrashed in terrible convulsions. The crowd, which had previously been so dense that it seemed there was nowhere for an apple to fall, dispersed almost instantly. People, clinging to each other, looked down with compassion and horror at the bending, beating, shaking, growling man ...

Believe me, this is not an excerpt from the script of another horror movie. Life, as it often happens, presents stories worse than any fantasy. The described event took place in a real dimension just a few months ago. The place of action is the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, where Father Herman, the hegumen of the monastic brethren of the monastery, held his next "reprimand".

From the history of the issue

The word "exorcism" is probably not familiar to every modern person. In the old days in Russia, this tricky overseas term corresponded to a simpler, but no less terrible definition - "casting out demons"!

Almost any religion, including Christianity, recognizes the existence of dark forces - evil spirits, demons that live in the astral world and obey the prince of darkness, who has fallen away from God. In various revelations, he is called differently - Ahriman, Iblis, Satan. However, everywhere its essence is defined in the same way - an enemy of the human race, an insidious liar and a theomachist.

The first mention of exorcism in Christianity we find already in the Gospel itself. Jesus Christ during His earthly life repeatedly cast out demons trembling before Him from people possessed by these infernal (i.e., hellish) entities. But perhaps the most impressive is the episode of the Holy Scriptures, which tells how our Lord forced a whole congregation of evil spirits (remember: "our name is legion!") to move into a herd of pigs. Crazed by such an unexpected "neighborhood" animals rushed off the cliff into the sea.

The most experienced in spiritual life adherents of Christianity sometimes received the power to cast out evil spirits, commanding them in the name and power of Christ the Savior. However, the practice of this kind is fraught with very serious consequences and at all times required from a person incredible moral purity, control of his physical instincts, ascetic exercises and an ascetic lifestyle. Far from everyone, even a warrior of Christ experienced in spiritual battles, dared to actually enter into an open battle with the forces of hell.

"I know Jesus and I know Paul"

In the most difficult battles with demons, the unclean spirit "immigrated" into the caster himself.

So, in the "Acts of the Apostles" (19, 13-16) there is a story about some unfortunate exorcists: "Even some of the wandering Jewish exorcists began to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying: we conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches. This some seven sons of the Jewish High Priest Sceva, but the evil spirit said in response: I know Jesus, and Paul is known to me, but who are you? such force that they ran naked and beaten out of that house."

"Strong Pop"

During another prayer service, a young woman of about thirty-five, turning her face away, suddenly began waving her arms in front of her like a dog - light clubs of incense burnt in the priest's censer reached her.

It is difficult to describe in words the intonation of her voice when she shouted angrily at Father Herman: "S-old fool-cancer," and then, as if with regret in her voice: "U-u... strong pop!" Accustomed to everything during his numerous “reprimands”, the elderly priest paused only for a moment and, standing at half a turn, in a strict voice only imperiously threw to the one who, sitting inside the woman, boldly spewed blasphemy at him: “Well, shut up right now!" More this someone he did not express his thoughts about what was happening - he only grumbled muffledly and displeasedly inside the woman.

There were also much more serious cases. One possessed was brought to Troitse-Sergiev chained to a bed. When he was just being brought to the gates of the Lavra, he began to rage terribly and break out of his bonds. He reinforced his actions with the most selective mate. The verbal constructions, built from profanity, were so multi-storey that you can hear similar "pearls" not in every "diner". Calmness came to him after several hours of Fr. Herman's prayer service in the church, where the demon-possessed man was brought straight to the bed.

Burns of a demoniac, or why the baby screamed in a male bass

Usually at the prayer services of Abbot Herman, performed in the church of St. the prophet John the Baptist, gathering up to a hundred people. Among them, as a rule, from three to five possessed.

However, they are by no means obligatory present at every worship service. If there are such people in the temple, then "strangeness" begins almost with the first words of the prayer service: some unintelligible and frightened cries, groans, murmurs, incomprehensible movements. Children who have "something" in them begin to cry for no reason. At the mere approach of Father Herman, one such baby roared in a real masculine bass and began to rage, tearing himself out of the hands of his mother holding him. And this at a time when other children were happy to put their faces under the washing of holy water. Many of them outwardly even seemed to brighten, while smiling happily and listening to something mysterious that was happening inside them.

The obsessed behave quite differently. When they are splashed with holy water, they writhe and shrivel as from burns. In the process of the service, Abbot German several times goes around all those present, anointing the holy myrrh and sprinkling holy water - each individually. Those who have an "anomaly" of an infernal character in themselves usually, rolling their eyes with a roar, stagger back, sometimes fall. The woman mentioned at the beginning of the article, while the service was going on, fell to the floor four times. And every time - convulsions, convulsions, roars ...

The lady who slandered the priest (who came to the temple, as it turned out later, with a friend and son of 6-7 years old), at the end of the service, with difficulty approached the kissing of the Crucifix. The picture was heartbreaking: she herself - the image and likeness of God - was drawn to the Cross, and the one sitting inside her shied away from him with all his might. It is impossible to describe this scene. You must see it with your own eyes!

Despite the obvious tactlessness, I, unable to restrain my professional journalistic curiosity, approached this woman with questions: "What did you feel? Why did you scream like that?" Tired eyes looked at me: "I don't know. Everything happens against my will."

Revenge of the prince of darkness

Possession is not contagious, like tuberculosis or scarlet fever, for example. But one thing should be remembered: you cannot mock the forces of darkness, even if you are a convinced materialist and "Voltairian"! Satan, being a liar and a deceiver who does not recognize any divine laws, nevertheless knows them well and, like a chicane lawyer, always defends the rights of the "injured party" before God. His "cassation complaint" appeals to the original justice of the Creator, who established the Universal Law, before which everyone is equal and for the righteousness and immutability of which all living creatures glorify God. At the moment a person inflicts "offense" on Lucifer, it does not matter that the latter rebelled against God (Satan has already received punishment for this - eternal excommunication from the Almighty with overthrow into Tartarus!). The prince of darkness hypocritically cries out to God, like a creature, for no reason on his part, "offended" by a specific "word or action" of an individual person.

According to the justice of the Law established by Him, the Creator is forced to give any "offended" the right to repay the "offender" to the same extent. There is a so-called God's connivance to the forces of darkness. And the latter will not make you wait with revenge: generosity and nobility are not the lot of fallen angels, they take revenge cruelly and mercilessly!

Suggestion of suicidal thoughts, despondency, despair, hatred, anger, troubles in material life - the arsenal is great. The goal is one - the enslavement of the human soul! The most optimal way is to move inside a person.

What the seers said about the end times

Why don’t Orthodox people reach out to the Lavra, to the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh. Judging by their appearance, clothing, speech, people from Moldova, Siberia, and the Urals go to Sergiev Posad, the capital of all Russian Orthodoxy, for spiritual guidance. A lot of visitors from Ukraine. Believers, often families, travel hundreds of kilometers specifically to do only one thing - to venerate the holy relics of St. Sergius - the great miracle worker and abbot of the Russian land. To those relics that have been in incorruptibility for six hundred years already and to which our ancestors from time immemorial have venerated - just imagine! - John the Terrible and Peter the Great. But, as often happens, many of us, who have lived for decades just an hour's drive from Sergiev Posad, have never visited this great national shrine in our lives. How many of us are like this - mired in everyday fuss?!

From all over Russia, people come here, among other things, in order to get to the spiritual children and heirs of St. Sergius - to Father Naum, who has the gift of clairvoyance, or Father Herman, who casts out demons in his services.

And here's the thought that came to my mind. Almost exclusively believers, religious people come to the prayers of the latter, but even among them there are obsessed people. How many of these, inconspicuously carrying an impure SOMETHING, exist among us, mere mortals, many of whom, living to whitish gray hair, never knew the way to the Temple - who, like St. Apostle Paul, on your way to Damascus?!

The ancient seers spoke of the last times as a terrible bacchanalia, when demons, before the coming of the Antichrist, escaped from hell, crowds will begin to move into people who have opened their souls to them with their godlessness, debauchery, vices, anger, hatred, envy, love of money, selfishness and dislike. Take a look around! Do not the mores of modern times (“O tempere, o mores!”) correspond to these descriptions of sinful people, first given as the most important characteristic of the nearness of the end of the world two thousand years ago by St. the apostle Paul in one of his epistles. The official church, which has always been very skeptical and wary of all kinds of homespun prophecies about the dates of the end of the world, today already openly claims that we all live in the last times. Father Herman also speaks about the terrible coincidence of the signs of the impending End in his sermons. Perhaps it is time to seriously think about the perishability of being and the future of our immortal souls!..

P.S

For those who are interested in the article, I will add that Abbot Herman receives all the suffering in the church of St. the prophet John the Baptist, located above the very arch of the entrance to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra (passage: to the Sergiev Posad station, then three hundred meters on foot). Services begin every day at 13:00. No one will demand money from you, admission is free. However, if you take five to ten rubles with you for donations to the Lavra and alms for the poor, then, frankly, this will not be a sin.

Before the beginning of the service, it is necessary to venerate the relics of St. Sergius and ask in his soul for his blessing. You can bring children and sick people with you. And take a small container with you: the prayer service of Father Herman is blessed with water - pour some holy water into your home.

God bless you!

Prayer from demons can protect a person who has become a victim of evil spirits. If demons appear to you, evil spirits live in your house, or you suspect that demons have settled inside you, prayers that drive out the dark forces are described below.

In the article:

In what cases is a prayer from demons read

Despite the fact that modern man is surrounded by no less modern world, in which there is almost no place left for legends and ancient traditions, demons still exist. They can appear to a person, live in his house and even occupy his body.

There are no barriers for demons. Neither thick walls nor reliable door locks will stop them. Only a prayer from demons can stop evil spirits and drive them back to hell. Prayer is able to protect from any evil and evil spirits. It is no coincidence that the latter cannot be located in places where prayers are often heard. It is believed that it does not exist in churches and monasteries. However, there are cases like fighting Satan in one's own cell, and many also believe in existence, but this is a separate topic for discussion.

In order to expel evil spirits from the house, you should stock up on holy water, an icon and church candles. Sprinkle walls, windows, doors and corners with holy water, circle them with candles, and carry the icon with you during this process. Church incense is also suitable, with which you can fumigate the room. The evil spirit and the smoke of wormwood are afraid. While you are doing this, you should read any of the prayers that cast out demons. They are listed below.

If you come across an evil spirit, keep in mind that it can not only scare you, but also seriously harm you. Demons are capable of much, and a meeting with them can end in both slight fright and death. Knowledgeable people often recommend carrying prayers against demons with them written down on a piece of paper. You can memorize one of the texts below, but many simply lose the ability to think clearly when they meet real evil spirits. Where can you meet her? Almost anywhere, for example, in a deserted place on the street, usually at night.

By the way, if you managed to see devils or other unclean entities, most likely they wished it - evil spirits like to scare people. Perhaps you have the rudiments of clairvoyance and are able to see more than other people. In any case, do not look too closely at the horned figures, read a prayer from demons and believe that it will save you.

Obsession- a separate and extremely difficult case. There are several options for getting rid of this problem - expelling demons from oneself, performing the rite described below for another person, or getting help in a church that has its own nuances.

What prayers to read against demons

So, how to get rid of demons if they have not yet moved into a person? The prayers described below are read during the expulsion of demons from the house or during an accidental meeting with evil spirits to protect against it. By the way, apartments often become housing for her, especially those in which there have been murders or suicides. He also loves evil spirits at the houses of drunken alcoholics and drug addicts, apartments in which they often quarrel and sin in other ways. If you got housing with otherworldly tenants, you should expel them. Evil spirits will push to suicide, drunkenness, scandals. There will be no peaceful life with such neighbors.

One of the prayers that cast out demons is Our Father. It can be read in any situations, it is universal. Also, for protection and exorcism, you can read "May God Arise", Jesus Prayer, Prayer to the Guardian Angel, Prayer to St. Cyprian and many other sacred texts that can protect from evil spirits. There are also little-known, but very strong prayers aimed specifically at protection from evil spirits.

Prayer to the Guardian Angel from demons and other representatives of the population of hell

Special prayer for protection from any evil spirits

These prayers can be read anytime, anywhere you need protection. During the sprinkling or fumigation of the dwelling, they can also be read. Their main purpose is to drive away evil spirits, not to let it frighten a believer, not to let it do the harm that it is capable of.

How to exorcise a demon from yourself

It is known that priests are usually involved in casting out demons, and for this they must obtain permission from the church diocese. But with the help of special prayers, the expulsion of demons from a person becomes real even at home. In any case, they will not be able to harm, and if they fail to drive away the dark essence, you can repeat the ceremony, ask for help from another person - it is believed that it is easier to scold someone than yourself, you can also go to church.

By the way, about the church - the demon sitting inside a person may not let him cross the threshold of the temple, because such entities experience serious discomfort in holy places. While reading the prayer that casts out demons, you must be alone - otherwise the entity may move into another person, leaving you. The obligatory presence of icons, candles or incense is not required, but it is worth putting on a pectoral cross.

So, how to exorcise a demon from yourself? This prayer is read during the manifestation of the activity of the evil spirits sitting in you. If you have enough willpower to understand that drinking alcohol, showing aggression or doing other obscene things makes you a demon, read this text:

You need to read a prayer until you feel better. While reading, you will feel the resistance of the dark essence that has occupied your body, but willpower and faith in the help of the Lord can save you from demons, demons and devils. Can also be read prayer to Saint Seraphim of Sarov, it helps well from evil spirits, from dark witchcraft. After the expulsion of dark entities, protection should be placed, but always Orthodox, with the help of prayers.

Prayers to cast out demons from another person

How to expel a demon from oneself is quite understandable - to remain alone, wait for its manifestation and read a prayer until it becomes easier. But not everyone has enough willpower to fight the dark forces on their own. And not everyone is capable of exorcism. This requires strong nerves, unshakable faith in the help of the Lord and a desire to selflessly help your neighbor. You will also need the icon of the Savior, which is placed in front of the demoniac.

In general, there are many requirements for an exorcist. He must not have zero in his date of birth. He must be older than the one he scolds, and the name of the scolder must be different, not the same as that of the patient. There must not be a woman on her period or a baby in the house of an exorcist. He must be baptized, wear a pectoral cross and keep a nine-day fast until the ceremony.

Casting out demons is a topic that stirs the minds of many people. The phenomenon of possession is popular in cinema, the introduction of evil spirits into the body is seriously feared, and scientists still have not come to a consensus on this matter. From the point of view of religion and magic, there is no doubt about the existence of possessed people, however, the approaches of priests and practitioners in this matter still differ.

A brief excursion into history

Exorcism is a very ancient rite, known since the beginning of our era. In modern theology, it is studied in all seriousness, and at the Catholic University you can get a diploma as an exorcist.

If we talk about the rite of exorcism itself, the first mention of it is indicated in the Bible, but cases of possession were known before.

There are references to possessed people in the mythology of various peoples from Japan to South America.

According to Christian canons, Jesus Christ personally was the first exorcist in the world. In the Bible, you can find a mention of how Jesus cast out demons from a person by instilling them into the bodies of animals - pigs. The possessed beasts died, throwing themselves into the abyss, which reads as a clear hint of the great danger of possession.

The influence of demons and demons on a person leads to death not only spiritual, but also physical.

So Jesus was the first to be able to cast out demons. Later, the apostles received this right when the Holy Spirit descended on them. It is believed that the followers of the apostles also had the ability to exorcise demons. There have been few such people in all ages, reprimanding is a dangerous occupation and, in the event of an error by the exorcist himself, can lead to his death or the death of the possessed.

Despite the fact that the right, and even sufficient spiritual power for reprimand, was and is possessed by a few, the ritual of exorcism is very popular. This phenomenon acquired the scale of mass hysteria in the Middle Ages, when religious fanaticism dominated.

Coupled with the persecution of witches, the fear of possession has become truly enormous.

In Russia, for the first time, the expulsion of demons is mentioned in the sources of the 14th century. The author of the notes was Peter Mohyla, Metropolitan of Kyiv. There are also written testimonies of several cases when a demonic exile ended with the death of a priest or a possessed person.

How to distinguish obsession and how do demons inhabit people?

Possession is called the suppression of the will of a person by an evil spirit, as a result of which the possessed is not able to partially or completely control his actions.

Suggested bad thoughts and voices in the head - this is what the possessed also often complain about. Centuries ago, when mental illness was little studied, all people who were somehow different from the rest were recorded as possessed. Epileptics especially “got it”, their sudden seizures with foam from the mouth for an ancient person really seemed to be something frightening and terrible. However, in order to think about the exorcism of a demon from a person, mental disorders alone are not enough - after all, they are quite explainable by modern science and can be treated.

A whole list of signs indicates the presence of evil spirits in a person:

  • Unmotivated aggression and outbursts of rage. This should be especially alarming if the person was previously calm and collected.
  • Obsessive thoughts about hurting yourself or others.
  • Thoughts of suicide.
  • Visual and auditory hallucinations, visions of evil spirits in reality and in a dream.
  • Actions and words on behalf of the essence that is in a person. At such moments, the demoniac may change his voice, look, etc.
  • Speaking in unknown languages.
  • Hatred of religious symbols, regardless of a person's religion. Such a demoniac feels bad in the church, he cannot stand the performance of any religious actions next to him.
  • The appearance of addictions, bad habits, immoral behavior.

Signs of possession with various nuances are known in different religions, including such exotic ones as Voodoo. In addition to instilling evil spirits into a person, voodooists also believe that the soul or part of it can be stolen from the body.

The concept of demonic possession is also in modern esotericism, for this phenomenon they also use a more extensive term - podselenie or podsel.

Under the subsettlement is meant not only demons, but any spirits and entities that have penetrated into the energy field of a person or into himself. There are many ways to get an otherworldly creature's settlement:

  • Bad habits. Alcoholism, smoking, drugs - all this attracts demons to a person.
  • Magic practice.

From the point of view of the church, any witchcraft makes a person vulnerable to evil spirits. From the point of view of practitioners, you can get yourself hooked by practicing witchcraft without appropriate protections.

  • Corruption. There are magical rites aimed at the purposeful introduction of a demon into a person.
  • Passage by inheritance or receiving as a gift from a witch.

If someone in the family practiced witchcraft through demons, the spirits may appear to their descendants demanding further work. The same happens with the so-called transfer of a gift from a dying witch or sorcerer.

  • Mistakes during the rite of exile.

A demon or any other evil spirit, having left the body, will first of all try to find a new home for itself. It is not for nothing that all witnesses of such rituals need to pray or defend themselves in other ways, if we are talking about purely magical practices.

In any religion, the introduction of evil spirits into human bodies is a negative phenomenon. Demons are always trying to bring about destruction.

An obsessed person is dangerous to others not only by his aggressive behavior and inadequacy of actions. Spirits feed on the energy of the person they have inhabited, and such a demoniac will try to get what they have lost in other ways. Often, the possessed become very strong energy vampires, turning the life of the household into a real hell.

Place for rituals

Not all clergy have the right to reprimand for the exorcism of demons.

Most often, only the servants of the most ancient monasteries have a blessing for such rites. In Russia, the most famous place where the rite of exorcism is performed is the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

Father German, a well-known exorcist throughout the country, conducts mass reprimands. Other priests often do not find a response to this practice. There is an opinion that each rite of exorcism from a person should be carried out individually. For the ceremony in other monasteries, a mandatory blessing is required.

How is the ritual

The rite of exorcism from a person has remained unchanged since the time of Jesus Christ. It is he who is considered by Catholics and Orthodox to be the only correct version of reprimand.

In the process, the priest reads a prayer to exorcise demons over the possessed, and the ceremony itself is carried out with the help of a crucifix, holy water and incense.

The banishing prayer is the longest of all in the Orthodox canon and is read for about twenty minutes.

The modern reprimand from demons, as in ancient times, is not a spectacle for the faint of heart. The possessed scream in a voice that is not their own, they struggle in fits, they try to throw themselves at the priest. There are cases when, during a reprimand, a demoniac became incredibly strong, such a person could hardly be kept by four.

In Orthodoxy, demons are not cast out in one session, several may be required. In addition, after passing the rite, a person must fast and pray. Relatives are allowed to order magpies for him and pray themselves. But the most important thing that the demoniac must do is to change the way of life. Exorcism is of little use, if a person continues to drink or lead a wild life, the demons will return again.

The opinion of the church and science

From the point of view of modern science, the phenomenon of possession is explained as a mental illness.

In psychiatry, there is a whole list of disorders in which the patient believes that he is controlled by the devil or an unclean demon. In some cases, the presence of evil spirits is explained by repressed emotions and feelings that a person is ashamed of for one reason or another. In addition, it is very convenient to attribute your own bad character traits to the influence of the demon.

The Church does not exclude the presence of mental disorders, but unlike science, the very phenomenon of possession and the possibility of exorcising a demon from a person are considered an indisputable fact.

Nevertheless, until the priest himself is convinced that the possessed who came to him is not mentally ill, he will not undertake the rite of exorcism.

Prayer to exorcise demons - a ritual that exorcises demons from a person

If you notice that a person close to you is showing signs of obsession, you can try to help him on your own with the help of Orthodox prayers.

  1. Go to the church and buy a random number of blessed candles.
  2. Set aside three candles, and put the rest in front of the icon of Jesus Christ.
  3. After crossing yourself, say: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God. Cast out from the servant of God / servant of God (say the name) demons and damned evil spirits. I trust in your crucified blood. Amen».
  4. Collect holy water and go home.
  5. Guess the time when the possessed will not be at home, retire and light the saved three candles. Place a container of blessed water nearby.
  6. Read the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 90 several times. Cross yourself.
  7. Having asked the Almighty for mercy, proceed to the repeated and unhurried reading of a prayer for the expulsion of demons from a person.

After you finish reading, cross yourself three times, let the candles burn out, and take the cinders to the Orthodox church.
