How to color eggs in onion skins. How to color eggs with onion skins. What to do

Very soon one of the biggest Christian holidays will come - Easter. On the eve of this holiday, many housewives are puzzled by the question of how to paint and decorate eggs at home without using harmful chemical dyes.

For many centuries, our ancestors successfully dyed eggs for Easter using ordinary onion skins.

Starting from Maslenitsa, housewives usually did not throw away onion peels, but dried them a little and put them in a linen bag. Before Easter, the amount needed to paint eggs just accumulated.

When painting eggs using onion peels, you can independently adjust their color from light yellow to rich red-brown. If you want to get a darker color of eggs, then you need to boil a large amount of onion peels in water for at least thirty minutes, and then just immerse the boiled eggs in the resulting broth.

To make the eggs lighter, you just need to use a smaller amount of husk for coloring and cook it for three to five minutes.

Also, the final color of eggs when painted with peel depends on the type of onion. Each variety of husk has its own color - purple, golden, deep orange, red, light yellow.

Here are several ways to beautifully and originally paint eggs using onion peels to achieve different effects.

Before painting, eggs must be removed from the refrigerator so that they warm up to room temperature and do not burst during cooking. Then, put the onion peels in a saucepan, pour boiling water over it and let it brew for two to three hours. Next, put the eggs in the onion infusion and put the pan on the fire. After boiling, reduce the heat to low and cook the eggs for ten minutes. After the water has cooled, remove the eggs from the infusion with a spoon and wipe them with a paper napkin.

Dyed eggs “speckled” or motley eggs.

Each egg must first be dipped in water and then rolled in dry semolina, rice or corn grits. Next, the egg must be tightly wrapped with a piece of gauze. To make the cereal adhere better to the egg, the ends of the gauze are tightly tied with thread. Next, the eggs are boiled in onion infusion, as in the first method.

Krashenki with a pattern.

In order to get nice patterns when painting with onion skins, you need to attach small leaves, flowers, blades of grass (can be dried or freshly picked) to the eggs. Next, as in the second method, wrap the eggs in gauze and boil them in onion peels.

You can decorate eggs with a design or pattern in other ways. If you don’t have leaves and flowers on hand, you can simply tie a piece of lace around the egg before boiling.

To obtain “marble” stains on a colored egg, you must wrap each egg in onion skins before boiling. Then, together with the husk, wrap the egg in a white cotton napkin, gauze or a piece of nylon stocking.

For a more pronounced marble effect, it is better to use onion peels of different colors (from different varieties of onions).

The second option on how to make marble eggs is slightly different from the first, but also very simple. Multi-colored (red, yellow, orange) husks need to be chopped into small pieces with your hands or scissors and a few small pieces of paper should be added to the husks. The egg must first be moistened with water so that the mixture of paper and husk sticks to it better. Then, we tie the eggs, rolled in a mixture of husks and pieces of paper, with gauze, pieces of stocking or linen. Next, water and onion peels are added to the pan and the eggs wrapped in peels are placed. You need to cook the eggs for thirty to forty minutes over low heat.

By coloring with onion skins you can get original striped eggs. To do this, before painting, each egg must be tightly wrapped with an elastic band or threads, which can be applied to the egg either symmetrically or asymmetrically. How to do it is only a matter of your inspiration and imagination.

Then, dip them in the infusion of onion peels and cook for half an hour.

To make Easter eggs, colored in the traditional way using a healthy natural dye, even more beautiful, shiny and look more impressive on the holiday table, after cooling, you need to carefully rub each egg with a cotton pad dipped in vegetable oil.

I described all the unusual ways of painting Easter eggs in onion skins that I know of here. I hope that the information will be useful to you when preparing for the holiday. If you paint eggs in onion skins somehow differently, write. I think it will be interesting for both me and the readers.

Before Holy Sunday, everyone begins to think: how best to paint eggs. Of course, there are many dyes and other devices that will help you make a bright Pysanka. However, I don't have much faith in chemicals. Today I’ll tell you about my grandmother’s method: now I always paint eggs with onion skins, maybe you’ll like it too. In this article I will describe 12 Easter recipe technologies for painting and decorating eggs. So, let's look at the products that will be useful to us and each of the dyeing methods.

Ingredients:

  • eggs (quantity as needed);
  • rice cereal - 1 bowl;
  • buckwheat - 1 plate;
  • millet - 1 plate;
  • onion peel - 50 grams;
  • water - 1.5 liters;
  • olives - several pieces;
  • leaves of dill, parsley, various flowers.

What eggs should be dyed for Easter?

In order for pysanka to turn out not only bright, but also tasty, it is necessary to correctly select and prepare chicken eggs. So here are some recommendations.

  1. It is best to remove the eggs from the refrigerator in advance: about an hour before cooking: this way they will reach room temperature.
  2. Next we proceed to washing the eggs. To do this, you need to use a tap with running water, soap and a brush: this is necessary to remove grease and dirt from the surface of the product: as a result, the Easter egg will turn out to be more saturated in color.

We paint the eggs with onion skins. Step by step recipe

In order to create a wide variety of colored eggs in onion peels, you should complete the following preparations.

  1. For the first method we need rice cereal. Take an egg, soak it in water and cover it in rice. Afterwards, carefully wrap it in a net so as not to knock off the grains. When I paint eggs, I take ordinary nylon tights and cut them into medium squares so that I can completely capture the pysanka. We tie the ends of the stocking with a strong thread.
  2. Method number 2. For this method, buckwheat is used. The technology is the same as the previous version. We wet the egg, wrap it in buckwheat and wrap it in a stocking. Thus, the pattern turns out to be more massive.
  3. Method No. 3. We do the same thing, only with millet.
  4. For the following options we need fresh leaves. So, first take a small sprig of parsley and soak it in water. Next, apply the egg to the surface and smooth out all the edges. The leaf should fit perfectly on the shell. We wrap it in a stocking so that it doesn’t get lost in the boiling water.
  5. For the next option, you need to take a sprig of dill. Dip the paint in water and glue the leaf. Cover with nylon and tie.
  6. The paint looks very beautiful if you attach a sprig of pine tree. It should be attached using the above method.
  7. You can specially cut out a stencil from a waterproof material and, in the same way, glue it to the egg.
  8. To create an original white pattern, use regular stationery rubber: it is usually used to join banknotes. To do this, wrap the egg several times so that the elastic is placed throughout the entire volume. This will make a pretty interesting egg for Easter.
  9. A very beautiful pysanka is obtained if you use lace. Wrap it around the egg, then wrap it on top with nylon material and secure the ends with thread.
  10. The next way to decorate Easter eggs is to use chopped olive rings. Glue them around the perimeter of the egg, and wrap it in a stocking - secure it on top.
  11. Small flowers look very beautiful. Pasting is carried out using the above technology.

So, we looked at options for creating patterns. The next step is to paint the eggs with onion skins.

Coloring eggs with onion skins

I prepare a decoction for coloring eggs as follows.

  1. I put 1.5 liters of water in a saucepan. This volume will require 50 grams of onion peels.
  2. Fill the husk with water and leave overnight.
  3. Place the pan on low heat and bring the water to a boil. Stir the liquid for about 10 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and leave the broth to cool.
  5. Next, immerse the eggs in the pan: they should be completely covered with liquid so that the color is uniform.
  6. Place on the fire and bring to a boil. Afterwards we set the temperature to medium and boil the dyes for 5 minutes. Next we remove them. Let them sit for a few minutes and plunge into cold water until cool.

To make the eggs shine brightly, take a napkin and wipe the surface of the eggs with vegetable oil. For a beautiful and original presentation of Easter eggs, you can create a bird's nest from shavings on a pallet. Place colored eggs on top. Photos of ornaments and finished paints can be found on our website. I love to cook.

The bright holiday of Easter and the whole week after it are impossible without eggs painted in different colors.

Since ancient times, our ancestors came up with different ways to paint them. The most common, perhaps, is in onion peels.

Since onions come in different types, their peels also have differences in color. Use this feature to give eggs shades and even patterns.

Prepare:

  • onion peel;
  • eggs;
  • salt;
  • vegetable oil;
  • gauze;
  • elastic bands, threads;
  • lace trims;
  • any greenery, flower petals that you find in the house.

The classic way to color eggs with onion skins

Place the onion peels in a saucepan and fill with cold water so that there is a third of free space in it.

Boil over medium heat for 40-50 minutes until the water acquires a dark, rich hue. You can use ready-made boiling water, then reduce the cooking time to a quarter of an hour.

Remove the eggs from the refrigerator at least an hour in advance to prevent them from bursting or coloring during cooking. Dip them into the hot onion solution and add salt. One tablespoon of salt per 3 liters of boiling water is enough.

Boil the eggs over low heat for 10-15 minutes and turn them periodically so that their color is as uniform as possible.

Remove the prepared eggs into a bowl and fill with cold water. After cooling, wipe them with a dry towel and spread with vegetable oil. This will give them a beautiful shine.

Variations with patterns for coloring eggs in onion skins

To diversify your favorite Easter treat, paint eggs using the same onion skins using available products.

  • After moistening the egg and rolling it in dry rice, carefully wrap it in cheesecloth and cook until tender.
  • Cut paper into different shapes and stick it to a dry egg, after moistening it in water. Where the paper is glued in one layer, the color will be darker, where in two or more layers it will be lighter.
  • Place parsley, cilantro and leek leaves around the egg and wrap in cheesecloth. Cook until done in onion skins. Instead of greenery, scraps of lace fabric will also work. This will make the design on the eggs even more interesting.
  • Similarly, wrap raw eggs with rubber bands for money or spool threads and go to boil in a hot onion solution. After the eggs have cooled, unwind them and either leave them as they are.

Fun stripes on Easter eggs painted with onion skins

  • Place the eggs in a saucepan.
  • Add the prepared onion broth to a third of the container.
  • Boil with eggs for 5-7 minutes.
  • Add another third of the onion peel broth.
  • Repeat cooking for 3-4 minutes.
  • Pour in the dark liquid until it completely covers the eggs.
  • Keep on the fire for up to 2 minutes and remove the eggs.
  • After cooling, they will delight you with vertical stripes of different shades.

Easter eggs with drawings

  • raw chicken eggs - 8-10 pcs.,
  • onion peel - 1 l,
  • rice (cereals),
  • brilliant green,
  • old nylon stockings or tights,
  • elastic bandage,
  • gauze,
  • paper,
  • scissors,
  • leaves and flowers of plants,
  • threads,
  • elastic bands,
  • lace,
  • needle.

Rice

  1. Cut the stocking into pieces so that one piece fits one egg, leaving edges that can be tied tightly.
  2. Tie one end of the stocking, forming a pouch.
  3. Place the egg in the bag and add the rice. Tie the bag so that the nylon fits tightly around the shell.
  4. Using your fingers, spread the rice inside the bag so that the grains evenly cover the entire egg.
  5. Boil the eggs in their shells according to the instructions above.
  6. Once the eggs are cooked and cool, cut open the bag and rinse the eggs with cold water to remove the rice. You will get speckled eggs. Why is rice used? Other cereals quickly boil and turn into mush, leaving no clear imprints on the shell.

Leaves and flowers

  1. A popular way to color patterned eggs is to use parsley leaves.
  2. Choose beautiful, neat leaves.
  3. Wet the leaf with water and apply it to the shell, then secure the leaf with a nylon bag.
  4. Instead of parsley, you can use dill, cilantro, currant leaves, chamomile flowers and any other plants.
  5. The area of the shell covered by plant material will remain unpainted. The eggs will have a clear pattern with natural contours.

Paper

  1. Cut the writing paper into small pieces of any shape.
  2. To make the fragments neat, first draw an outline with a simple pencil and then cut it out. These can be abstract ornaments or thematic designs.
  3. Moisten a piece of paper with water so that it sticks to the shell, and secure it with nylon. If you are worried that the fragments will move and the drawing will turn out blurry, use self-adhesive paper or electrical tape.

Threads or elastic bands

To paint eggs with a pattern, you can do without stockings, but use, for example, threads or elastic bands.

  1. Just wrap each egg with threads in a random order - you will get striped eggs.
  2. Instead of threads, you can use rubber bands. Choose thicker rubber bands so that they do not burst in boiling water.
  3. Don't pull the eggs too tightly; the shell may crack.

Lace

Another option is to wrap the eggs in lace. As a result, the shell will be decorated with luxurious openwork ornaments. The finer the lace, the more exquisite the pattern will be. Simple but cute diamond shapes on the shell are obtained by placing the egg in a large mesh.

Zelenka

Using onion peels, they make amazing designs on eggs (see photo below) - with marbled patterns. You will also need additional brilliant green solution and gauze.

  1. Grind the husks with scissors, in a blender or in a coffee grinder.
  2. Moisten raw eggs with water and roll in chopped husks.
  3. Secure the husk fragments with gauze or nylon stocking. Tie the edges of the makeshift bag tightly.
  4. Boil water and add brilliant green to it - from a few drops to a whole bottle. The brightness of the shade depends on the amount of greenery.
  5. Boil the eggs for 10 minutes and cool.
  6. Drain the water and carefully cut the gauze. Wash the husks off the shells with running water. It is recommended to wear gloves when performing this type of work.

To make the stains even more varied, use peels of different varieties of onions. You can add shredded writing paper to the crushed husks. Please note that if there is a lot of paper, the eggs will turn out pale.

Needle

You can even apply the design after you have painted them with onion skins. Any ornament is simply scratched onto the shell with a needle. Painted eggs can be complemented with Easter-themed factory stickers or tied with ribbons.

Gauze or bandage

You can use your imagination and use any other materials, coloring eggs according to this principle. Instead of a stocking, gauze or a wide elastic bandage will also work.

  • The water in which you will boil the eggs should be generously salted. If the shell breaks, the egg will not leak out.
  • To make the color more intense, use vinegar. You can rub the egg with vinegar before coloring, after coloring, or add vinegar to the water.
  • To ensure the shade goes on evenly, wash the eggs before dyeing using a soft sponge. You can also rub the shell with alcohol.
  • Don't cook the eggs too long - they will taste bad. If you want to get a darker, rich color, keep the eggs in a cold decoction of onion skins for several hours after dyeing.
  • To make eggs shiny, rub the shell with vegetable oil.

That's all the tricks for creating beautiful and original Easter eggs. Onion peel is a natural dye, so all procedures are completely safe.

Today we will learn several recipes for coloring eggs for Easter with one of the natural dyes - onion skins. Previously, I bought paints at the store and painted eggs with multi-colored food, but chemical paints. Now, for several years now, I have been painting eggs with natural dyes made from onion peels, turmeric, and beets. I also use greenery. I like using such natural dyes, and the result is no worse than using artificial dyes.

On the festive table on the Resurrection of Christ, and are required.

Why dye eggs for Easter

Why are eggs painted? What is such an interesting custom that our mothers and grandmothers observed, and we too? The beginning of this long-standing story comes from the Bible. The first Easter egg was given by Mary Magdalene to the Roman Emperor Tiberius. After the resurrection of Jesus Christ, she came to the ruler with the words: “Christ is Risen!” It was necessary to come to the emperor not empty-handed, so she brought him an ordinary chicken egg as a gift. And Mary came to announce that Christ had risen, to tell about a miracle. However, Tiberius did not believe her words. He said that no one can be resurrected, just as a white egg cannot turn red. As soon as the last word left his lips, the egg really took on a scarlet color.

So the tradition of painting eggs for Easter arose. Initially, the color in which eggs were painted was only red. It symbolized the blood of Christ. And the egg itself served as a symbol of rebirth. However, later they began to be painted in other different colors and chicken eggs were replaced with wooden, chocolate or made of precious metals and stones.

What to do before you start coloring eggs

We begin to collect onion peels in advance. We will need 3 - 4 kg of onions. If you forgot to accumulate the husks, you can not completely remove them from the onion, but only the top layer, so that the onion can continue to be stored.

If you dye eggs in their shells in a simple way, you can buy eggs of any color. If you paint shelled eggs with designs, then you must choose white eggs. If you use thermal stickers, it is better to buy medium-sized eggs, since such stickers will not fit on large eggs. The eggs should be smooth, the shell should not protrude anywhere, and should not have any roughness or cracks.

30 minutes before the start of cooking, you need to remove the eggs from the refrigerator. This is done so that during cooking they do not burst due to temperature changes.

Prepare salt to add to the water during the cooking process to prevent the eggs from bursting.

Wash the eggs if they are not very clean. Before cooking, wipe the eggs with alcohol or regular table vinegar so that the paint from the onion skins is better absorbed.

Ingredients:

  • Eggs - 10 pieces
  • Water - 1 liter
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon

Preparation:

To simply color eggs with onion skins, simply dip white eggs at room temperature into the onion broth and cook for 20 minutes. I drop the eggs into the pan in a tablespoon, it’s more convenient. Then we take out the finished eggs, you can also do this with a spoon, and put them in cold water to cool faster. It is not necessary to immerse the finished eggs in cold water if you are not going to do anything further with them, such as decorate them further. I recommend greasing the finished eggs with any vegetable oil for a beautiful shine. And then you can draw any pattern on the egg or stick stickers on it. There is already an ocean of your imagination.

Ingredients:

  • Eggs - 10 pieces
  • Onion peels - 2 cups, this is about 3-4 kilograms of onions
  • Water - 1 liter
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - a few drops on a cotton swab
  • A leaf of parsley, cilantro, any other beautiful leaf of a plant (not poisonous only) - 10 pieces or more, if you want

Preparation:

So, let's prepare eggs with a plant pattern. For example, you can make a pattern in the shape of a plant leaf. My favorite, by the way, I really like the result.

Wash the onion peel thoroughly. Place the husks in a saucepan, add water, bring to a boil and cook for about 15 - 30 minutes. The longer we cook, the darker the color of the colored eggs.

We take a leaf and apply it to an egg moistened with water, wrap it tightly with gauze or nylon and tie the ends tightly. Place in a decoction of onion peels and cook for 20 minutes. Then we take out the finished eggs, this can be done with a spoon, and put them in cold water to cool faster. It is not necessary to immerse the finished eggs in cold water if you are not going to do anything further with them, such as decorate them further. We remove the gauze from the eggs. I recommend greasing the finished eggs with vegetable oil for a beautiful shine. And, by the way, you can experiment with patterns of colored eggs as much as you like. In a similar way, you can draw any other design on the egg. For example, not from a leaf, but from paper, cut out some figure or flower.

Ingredients:

  • Eggs - 10 pieces
  • Onion peels - 2 cups, this is about 3-4 kilograms of onions
  • Water - 1 liter
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - a few drops on a cotton swab
  • Lace or lace fabric - for wrapping 10 eggs in 1 or several layers

Preparation:

Instead of plants, you can use special patterned fabric or lace to create a pattern, which can be bought at sewing supply stores. Then the cooking process will be even easier.

Wash the onion peel thoroughly. Place the husks in a saucepan, add water, bring to a boil and cook for about 15 - 30 minutes. The longer we cook, the darker the color of the colored eggs.

We wrap the egg tightly in fabric and secure it, for example, you can sew it up with thread or hook it with a stapler, or simply tie it. Place the eggs in the onion peel broth and cook for 20 minutes. Then we take out the finished eggs, this can be done with a spoon, and put them in cold water to cool faster. It is not necessary to immerse the finished eggs in cold water if you are not going to do anything further with them, such as decorate them further. Remove the fabric from the eggs. I recommend brushing the finished eggs with vegetable oil for a beautiful shine.

Ingredients:

  • Eggs - 10 pieces
  • Onion peels - 2 cups, this is about 3-4 kilograms of onions
  • Water - 1 liter
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - a few drops on a cotton swab
  • Threads or rubber bands for money - 2 - 3 spools of thread of different colors or 1 pack of multi-colored rubber bands for money

Preparation:

Another wonderful and fun recipe for decorating eggs for Easter. Let's make striped eggs.

Wash the onion peel thoroughly. Place the husks in a saucepan, add water, bring to a boil and cook for about 15 - 30 minutes. The longer we cook, the darker the color of the colored eggs.

We take threads of any diameter and any color, preferably cotton. Or colored rubber bands, which are often used for money. Wrap the egg tightly around it. Moreover, you can wind it as your creativity tells you, because... These threads will then be the drawing. Now put it in the already prepared broth and cook for 20 minutes. When the eggs have cooled completely, remove the elastic bands or threads and you should have a striped egg. I recommend brushing the finished eggs with vegetable oil for a beautiful shine.

Paint speckled eggs in onion skins

Ingredients:

  • Eggs - 10 pieces
  • Onion peels - 2 cups, this is about 3-4 kilograms of onions
  • Water - 1 liter
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - a few drops on a cotton swab
  • Rice or pearl barley – 0.5 cups
  • Gauze or nylon tights (stockings) - for wrapping 10 eggs in several layers

Preparation:

And now, attention, the squeak of fashion! Speckled eggs. I’m joking, of course, about the squeak, but the eggs turn out cool.

So, everything is as before. Wash the onion peel thoroughly. Place the husks in a saucepan, add water, bring to a boil and cook for about 15 - 30 minutes. The longer we cook, the darker the color of the colored eggs.

To dye Easter eggs speckled, you need to wet a raw egg and roll it in dry rice or pearl barley. These will be our future specks. Then we wrap the egg along with the grains of rice or pearls stuck to it in gauze or nylon and tie the ends with thread. Place the eggs in the onion broth and cook for 20 minutes until done. When the eggs have cooled completely, remove the gauze and you should have a speckled egg. I recommend brushing the finished eggs with vegetable oil for a beautiful shine.

Marble eggs in onion peels

Ingredients:

  • Eggs - 10 white pieces
  • Onion peels, preferably from different types of onions, i.e. onions of different colors - 2 cups, this is about 3-4 kilograms of onions
  • Water - 1 liter
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - a few drops on a cotton swab
  • Pieces of white paper, finely chopped - 0.5 cups
  • Gauze or nylon tights (stockings) - for wrapping 10 eggs in several layers

Preparation:

And now we are not following the usual pattern, but a completely different one. There is no need to boil the onion skins. It must be cut with scissors into small pieces, about 0.5 cm. It can be smaller if you have the patience. The smaller you cut, the more beautiful it will turn out. We also cut paper. Pour the chopped husks and paper into a plate. Take white eggs. Now you need to wet the egg with water and roll it in a plate in the husk and paper. We make a bag out of nylon or gauze and fill it with fine husks and paper. Now you need to lower the egg into the nylon and tie the ends tightly with thread. Pour water into a saucepan and add the prepared eggs there and cook them for 30 minutes. Remove the nylon and husks only after the product has completely cooled.

You can diversify this method with another color, namely brilliant green. Don't be alarmed, please, it can be used for these purposes.

In this option, you will need to bring water to a boil in a saucepan and pour the entire bottle of brilliant green into it. Place the prepared eggs in the water with the greens and cook them for 20 minutes. Then you need to drain the water and pour in cold water to cool the product. Then remove the eggs from the water and peel them. You will get brown - white - green marbled eggs. Well, as usual, I recommend greasing the finished eggs with vegetable oil for a beautiful shine.

Important! Since the recipe uses brilliant green, it is better to use gloves. The utensils in which you boil eggs may become stained if they are enameled. Therefore, it is best to take an old pan that you don’t mind. Over time, the brilliant green will wash off, by the way.
Well, if you have time and desire, you can make creative eggs rather than plain eggs? Ready to start the process? Imagine, if you invite helpers - children - into the kitchen, then this activity will simply turn into a holiday for them and they will remember for the rest of their lives how they painted unusual eggs with their mother. And then they will pass these recipes on to their children. So don’t be lazy, try to organize a holiday in the kitchen a day earlier.

Let me remind you that you cannot paint eggs or bake Easter cakes on Good Friday, but Maundy Thursday and Maundy Saturday are very suitable for this.

Happy Easter to you!
