Spain is an amazing country. It is warm here all year round, in summer you can swim in the sea, and in winter you can ski in the mountains. But the country also has islands, and some of them are at a great distance from the mainland. Therefore, the answer to the question of when it is better to relax in Spain at what time of the year and where will depend on what you want from Spain: a beach holiday, sightseeing or skiing. Let's look at the seasons in the country and you will find out for yourself when is the best time to come to Spain.

And so, you are going to Spain. Almost half a million Russians visit the country every year. More than a thousand Russians own real estate here and can come here at any time of the year. When do you want to visit Spain? In summer, to swim in the sea? In spring or autumn, to lie on the beach? Or maybe in winter to ski from the mountains? Find out when is the best time to come to the country for what you love.

Beach season in Spain.
In Spain, the beach season lasts long enough. In some parts of the country, swimming begins in April and ends in November. And, for example, in the Canary Islands you can swim all year round. There, anyway, the ocean does not warm up above +20 degrees, and even in the winter months the same temperature is maintained.

But the bulk of tourists arrive in the country in mid-May. At this time, warm weather sets in throughout the country, the sun shines, and the rain becomes noticeably less. Tourists swim in the sea all summer and part of autumn. But in each season, their number is different, so in Spain there are such concepts as a high tourist season and a low one.

High season in Spain: many tourists, heat.
If in Cyprus and Greece the high season begins with the beginning of summer, then in Spain the peak of tourists is visible from mid-July. It is at this time of the year that the real excitement of vacationers is here. The hotels are packed, the vacant rooms are several times more expensive than in spring or autumn.

The reason for this is absolutely dry and hot weather. Throughout the country, the temperature is +30 and above, at night it is not lower than +25. The sea is warmed up to +23 +25, and tourists are happy to swim and cool in it.
The most popular destinations in these months are: Costa del Sol, Costa Brava, Costa Blanca. It is also difficult to find empty hotels on the island of Mallorca and Ibiza.

Low season in Spain: warm, sometimes rainy.
Least of all tourists on the shores of the country in April and November. These months are traditionally the most unvisited. Firstly, there are no big holidays in the countries of the world, so Russians and Europeans are not in a hurry to come here. Secondly, the weather and the sea during these months are not conducive to a beach holiday.

But these two months are great for lovers of sightseeing holidays. Prices for hotel rooms are low, there are no tourists, and you can get into a museum or an exhibition without queuing. If you are lucky with the weather and there is no rain, then feel free to go for a bike ride in the mountains to explore the nature of the country.

Velvet season in Spain: sometimes hot. You can swim.
In Spain, there is also a velvet season, when daylight is less than night, but you can swim in the sea, as well as sunbathe on the beach.

In Spain, the velvet season is considered mid-September to the end of October. Tourists are slowly starting to leave the country, hotels are emptying and prices are dropping. The air temperature drops a little and in the daytime already up to +29. The nights become cool, sometimes up to +13. But the sea is in no hurry to cool down, and its temperature is still +25.
In the velvet season, many Russians traditionally fly into the country. After all, the prices are very low, and even taking into account the flight, many can afford to buy a tour for 7-9 days in Spain.

When to Spain for shopping and for walks?
It is no secret that people fly to Spain for shopping and for walks. Someone likes cycling through the beautiful mountainous vineyard fields, and someone likes to just walk around the big cities of the country. The best time for this is spring and autumn. There are not many tourists, housing prices are reduced. Stores often have sales, and sometimes discounts reach -70%!

The best months for these trips are March, April and October. There is no heat and no rain. The sun is shining, and you can leisurely stroll through the cities or bike through the mountains.

Ski season in Spain: many skiers, prices are high.
In Spain, ski resorts are very well developed. They are not much inferior to the best Austrian or Slovenian resorts. But the prices here are sometimes higher. This is due to the fact that the ski resort in Spain is not long. It depends on the snow, which may fall in November, or maybe at the end of December. Therefore, it is not worth booking a hotel here in advance. First, wait for the message that the snow cover is normal.

The season ends for lovers of skiing also at different times. If the snow lies, then the tourists ride. The snow is melting and there are no tourists. Usually, already in March, the slopes of the mountains become empty, and grass turns green instead of snow. Most of the country's ski resorts are located on the border with France. So if you have a Schengen visa and if there is no snow in Spain, you can safely go skiing in the French Alps.

Summarize?
The result is this: it is better to swim in Spain in the summer. To swim and at the same time save money, you should come to the country in the fall. But no later than the end of October. Do you love skiing? Then hurry here in winter, ideally in January or February. And if you just want to visit Spain and look at its beauty, then consider flying here in April or November.

There are two types of tourism in Spain: resort and sightseeing. Each has its own characteristics and peaks. Come for sightseeing in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia in any month. The majority of tourists come to beach resorts in July-August.

Holiday season features

In our experience, the best time to travel to the beach resorts of Spain is August and the first half of September.

The Balearic Sea warms up slowly, which is why the sea in the resorts of the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada warms up to + 24º only by mid-July. Swimming in June is not very comfortable. But the beaches are empty and there are no crowds on excursions. September is characterized by hot summer weather. But from the middle of the month, the first rainy and cloudy days are already possible.

In the south of Spain (Valencia, Malaga, Gibraltar), the climate is greatly influenced by the proximity of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic. The climate of the region is hotter, but the water is 1-2º cooler.

In Mallorca, the influence of the cold current from the Atlantic is not felt, so the water is warmer and warms up faster. We recommend coming here in June and September.

Tenerife is warm and sunny throughout the year. The Atlantic in September warms up to +24º and cools down to +18º by February. From December to April, most prefer to swim in the pools, but some prefer the beaches and the ocean.

Features of excursion rest

In order to get acquainted with the sights of Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, it is better to fly in late spring or early autumn. At that time:

  • hotel prices are noticeably lower
  • flights are cheaper
  • fewer queues

The Tenerife excursion program is available to tourists all year round. The only negative is the unpredictability of weather conditions in the central part of the island.

When is the best time to go to Spain. Climate, overview of the seasons

Only very conditionally, the whole of Spain can be considered a Mediterranean climatic region. At the same time of the year in different parts of the country, the temperature can vary significantly and fall (or not fall at all) different amounts of precipitation. Such a spread of internal climatic differences is due to the geographical position of the country, located both on the mainland and on the islands. The relief and proximity of the seas also contribute to this phenomenon.

But still Spain is one of the warmest countries in Southern Europe. The sun here pleases 260-280 days a year, and in some places it shines for more than 300 days. On the southern coast, the average daily temperature for many years of observation did not fall below + 20⁰С, and the maximum sometimes rose to + 40⁰С. In the north, it is noticeably cooler in summer, but not critical: + 25⁰ C. In winter, it is near zero and lower only in the north and in the center.

Among the many climatic zones in Spain, there are three main types of climate (based on the geographical location of the territories):

1. The central part (inland areas) is continental. Winters are cool here, and summers are dry and warm.

2. The south and the Mediterranean coast are Mediterranean. Winters are mild and wet, while summers are hot and dry.

3. North and northwest - temperate marine. Relatively low moderate temperature and abundant rainfall in all seasons.

It is clear that the country-averaged weather characteristics given in the review below may differ from the actual ones for a particular city and resort. The weather is already very different in the sightseeing Madrid and Barcelona, Seville and Zaragoza, Valencia and Bilbao, in mainland resorts and neighboring islands. And even more so - in the country of eternal spring, in the Canary Islands. The Balearics (Palma de Mallorca) also has its own microclimate.

Spain is a large country that occupies the entire Iberian Peninsula in southern Europe. Depending on which region of Spain you are going to, and what exactly you want to see and visit, you need to choose the best time to travel.

Spain is a large country occupying the entire Iberian Peninsula in southern Europe. Depending on which region of Spain you are going to, and what exactly you want to see and visit, you need to choose the best time to travel. The central highlands of the Iberian Peninsula, including Madrid, are characterized by a sharply continental climate, that is, hot, suffocating summers and cold winters with piercing winds. In contrast, on the Atlantic coast - high humidity and fog, short and damp summers. The Mediterranean coast in the south of the country has a mild climate with positive temperatures throughout the year, while the climate on the Andalusian coast is definitely subtropical, where comfortable warm weather prevails in winter and summer.

Spring, early summer and autumn are the best times to visit most regions of Spain. At this time, there is no suffocating heat anywhere, all museums and attractions are open and working. At the same time, there are not so many tourists yet, especially in beach resorts.

Spain is one of the most visited countries in the world - every year about sixty million people come to Spain. In the middle of summer, all resorts in Spain are completely filled. Even in the harsh Pyrenees mountains, crowds of skiers in winter are replaced by strings of climbers and trekking fans.

August in Spain is the time of holidays, vacations and recreation for the Spaniards themselves, when all the coasts of the country are filled with vacationers. At the same time, cities, including the capital Madrid, are emptying - all the locals rush to the sea.

Each region of Spain has its own holidays and festivals. For example, in the small old town of Almagro in the province of La Mancha and Extremadura, south of Madrid, there is a festival of classic Spanish drama throughout July. This event attracts many theater lovers from all over the world.

In Andalusia, on Holy Week, before Catholic Easter, grandiose colorful processions of penitents pass through the cities of Seville, Malaga, Granada and Cordoba, they culminate at sunset on Friday, when columns of people move by candlelight, forming a river of flowing lights in the night.

In the last week of April, all of Spain rushes to Seville: the largest fair in the country is held here.

In the first two weeks of September, the ancient city of Ronda, in the mountains north of the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, hosts an annual celebration and competition of flamenco and colorful bullfights, participants perform in 18th-century costumes.

In the ancient city of Zaragoza, located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, northeast of Madrid, on the second week of October, colorful religious processions dedicated to Maria del Pilar are accompanied by performances of rock, folk and jazz groups, a festival of traditional jota dance, bullfights.

Spain, along with the Balearic and Canary Islands, is located in four climatic zones:

Weather in Spain

The climate of Spain is one of the most stable and sustainable in Europe. The difference between summer and winter temperatures is very small. Winter is from December to February, summer, respectively, lasts from June to August. Beach holidays are most attractive in August, when sea water warms up to maximum temperatures.

Snow in Spain is rare and in most regions is equated with a national disaster. Coastal areas are humid and windy in winter, making it seem like it's much cooler outside than it really is. Rain and winds are common during the autumn and spring months.

Important! Many travelers, choosing a tour to Spain, are guided by the principle that the further south, the warmer the sea will be. For Spain, this principle does not work! In terms of sea water temperature, the warmest resorts during the summer months are Costa Blanca and Murcia. The second place is occupied by the beaches of the Costa Dorada and the Balearic Islands. The Costa del Sol, despite its favorable geographical position, cannot always please travelers with a warm sea due to the influence of the Atlantic. In the Canary Islands, the water temperature at the height of the summer season rises to a maximum of 24, which is much lower than the Mediterranean figures. But in spring, winter and autumn, the water in the Canaries will be warmer than in the Iberian Peninsula. Such are the features of sea currents.

Tourist seasons in Spain

The beach holiday season in the resorts of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands begins in May - June and ends in September. There are not many tourists on the coast during these months. For those who want to save on vacation, the beginning and end of the season is the best time to travel to the seaside resorts of Spain.

If you like to swim exclusively in warm sea water, then go to Spain in July or August. True, you will have to put up with all the disadvantages of the peak tourist season: high prices, congested hotels, beaches and major tourist attractions.

With the end of the beach season, tourists do not lose their interest in Spain at all. In autumn, winter and early spring, they are concentrated in areas of major cultural and historical attractions, ski resorts and festivals. Buying a package tour during this period will be much more difficult than during the high season.

As for the Canary Islands, it is almost impossible to determine the beginning and end of the season here. Tourists come here all year round for the sea and the sun. The warmest period starts in May and ends in November.

What clothes to take with you

Summer in Spain is hot. Please bring hats, sunglasses and clothing made from natural fabrics. In May and September, you may need a light blouse. If you are going to visit Catholic monasteries or churches, for example, the famous Montserrat complex in Catalonia, you should take closed clothes with you. Although there is no strict dress code in the Catholic Church, shorts and short skirts are not suitable for visiting temples.

Autumn and spring throughout Spain are warm by Russian standards. A light jacket or raincoat will be enough for you. However, early March and late November can be chilly. Study the weather forecast carefully.

Winters in Spain are again warm. Feel free to wear a coat or autumn jacket. You definitely won't need fur-lined shoes, unless you're going to the mountains. Ski resorts experience sub-zero temperatures in winter, so take winter clothes and shoes.

Important! Going to Spain, many tourists take the bare minimum of necessary things and carry practically empty suitcases on the plane. All for the sake of pampering yourself with quality, designer and often inexpensive clothing. In Spain, there is a special atmosphere that causes an irresistible desire to create and create. On the streets of ancient cities, you can find shops of both world-famous couturiers and budding Spanish designers. So take your time to fill your suitcase with outfits. Suddenly you decide to buy something for yourself in the boutiques of Madrid or Barcelona.
