The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, beloved by Russians, was officially presented on the first day of December 2011 in St. Petersburg. The world premiere of the updated crossover from Stuttgart Mercedes-Benz ML (W166) took place a little earlier - in early autumn as part of the Frankfurt auto show.

The second generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class W164 was successfully sold on both sides of the ocean (the two previous generations sold more than 1.2 million copies around the world) ... so the designers did not intend to radically change the appearance of the new Mercedes-Benz ML. As usual, the new version of the model has slightly increased its dimensions, maintaining the base dimensions of 2915 mm. Length: +24 mm (up to 4804 mm), width +16 mm (up to 1926 mm), and only in height the Mercedes-Benz M-Class crossover “in the 166th body” became lower by 19 mm (1796 mm) .

In the M-Class there is obvious external continuity from generation to generation. Mercedes-Benz artists carried out the design changes with filigree precision and accuracy, giving the new Mercedes M-Class greater family resemblance to other models of the concern.

Let's talk about the technical characteristics of the third generation Mercedes-Benz ML. With a gasoline engine (306 hp), the Mercedes-Benz ML accelerates to hundreds in 7.6 seconds and develops an impressive 235 km/h, while the average fuel consumption is negligible for a car weighing more than 2 tons - 8.5 liters! Diesel units are content with a “ridiculous” 6-7 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km (in mixed mode).
There are plans to install on this ML another eight-cylinder diesel engine 450 CDI and two gasoline engines for the ML 500 and ML63 AMG.

The updated Mercedes ML is already waiting for Russian drivers. What kind of fruit this is, we decided to find out with the help of owner reviews, photos and a test drive, which reveals the driving characteristics of the car. Before moving on to the “core”, you need to devote a couple of lines to history. After all, the car is not particularly popular in our countries. Most likely, you can guess why this is so. Price. Not everyone can pay 3 million for a car. But more on that later.

The Mercedes M-Class, developed primarily for the North American automobile market, was introduced back in 1997. A year later, the car received an award in the North American Truck of the Year category. A funny story: on the basis of this model in 2002, a special “Popemobile” was created for public trips of the Pope, which, however, is difficult to recognize after being altered for divine needs. The second generation appeared in 2005 at the Detroit Auto Show. Then sales of the model reached incredible heights, and thereby pushed the company to develop a new model. The third generation was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011.

Car interior and exterior

As you can see in the photo, the Mercedes company has preserved the originality of the ML model and added several successful innovations, which you can read about in the “Interior and Exterior” section.

At the moment, the third generation is the last, but a fourth is expected. The third generation of ML cannot be called innovative. For example, the wheelbase remains exactly the same as its predecessor. What has undergone significant changes is the appearance of the crossover, you can judge this from the photo. The car became fit and “muscular”; the body lines added elegance to such a massive crossover. The new image did not force the designers to abandon the planned elements that will accompany the model: shortened overhangs, original rear pillars and a large wheelbase.

As for the changes, we can now enjoy updated running lights, which are now located in the chrome elements of the car, a new radiator grille, which has increased in size and has become black. As in previous M-class models, the ML 350 has a roof that slopes back and ends with a spoiler - this is the highlight of this model range, and a successful one at that. The taillights slid even further onto the fenders and also increased in size.

Gorgeous rear view: as you can see in the photo, it is difficult to confuse any crossover with the ML 350 - the car turned out to be original. Another plus is the shape of the body and rear window. It is thanks to these thin body lines that the ML 350 stands out among other urban crossovers. In addition, the car performs well off-road, as for a city car, of course.

The elegant look of the updated M-Class SUV is repeated in the interior, which is decorated at the highest level. The steering wheel and seats are upholstered in expensive leather, there are real wood inserts on the doors and front panel, and the lighting lamps, which are located directly in the rearview mirror, provide comfort in the cabin with a pleasant soft light. The main dashboard is almost no different from the previous model in the ML 350. But there are still changes in it - it looks more collected due to the appearance of a new joystick, designed to replace a large number of buttons. Obviously, such a car simply cannot exist without an on-board electronics display, climate control, and radio. Moreover, all of the above is present in the basic version of the crossover.

The deflectors of the ventilation system began to look different: now they are more suitable for the general style of the ML 350 - the oval shape has changed to rectangular. On the contrary, there are more buttons on the steering wheel. On the central tunnel you can only find buttons for switching off-road driving modes, a multimedia system controller and active suspension buttons. Again, a standard set for a luxury car. In terms of roominess, the rear can accommodate three people in great comfort. But two people will still be more comfortable there. Especially if you lower the back of the chairs and put soft drinks in the holders. By the way, there are plenty of holders and various niches in the Mercedes ML 350. As for sound insulation, it is at the highest level, which is confirmed by reviews from the owners. When driving at high speed, passengers and the driver can even talk in a whisper, the cabin is so quiet. There is less vibration from the motor due to active hydraulic mounts. Also a big plus.

Now we come to the luggage compartment - an equally important issue. The luggage compartment volume is 690 liters. Of course, this is not a record for cars in this segment, but the trunk allows the driver to fit all the useful things on the road into the car. If desired, you can fold the rear seats and thereby free up additional space. It would be funny to see how someone would transport a huge wardrobe in such a car.

But the most interesting thing is hidden inside the car. Or to be more precise, under the hood. If the company did not change the design and interior much, then in terms of technical characteristics, Mercedes received real innovations. Drivers can expect new engines that are already available on the Russian market. These are ultra-modern and ultra-economical modifications of the ML 250 BlueTec 4matic and ML 250 CDI engines. The first unit is 28% more economical than its younger brother, imagine - this colossus consumes only 6 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers. Power – 204 horsepower, torque – almost 500 Nm. Another advantage of the engine is its Euro 6 support; the unit emits only 158 g/km.

As for the turbodiesel version, the Germans were afraid of the low quality of our diesel fuel when releasing it. But it's not scary, let's wait. Well, today we have the following engine options for the Mercedes ML 350. Now you can become the owner of innovative engines, such as:

  • ML 350 CDI 4matic – 231 horsepower. Especially for the Russian market, the Germans decided to remove the particulate filter, for which many Russian thanks to them;
  • ML 350 4matic BlueEfficiency – 306 horses and 370 Nm. The most popular power unit from this series;
  • The good old ML 500 has not disappeared from the options: the engine still provides the car with 408 horsepower.

You can also add a few nice words to the updated 7G-TRONIC transmission, which comes with all engine options. Some automotive experts claim that the 7G-TRONIC can be called the best gearbox in the world, because it is capable of dropping several gears at a time. Even innovative DSGs have to go through the stages one by one. Of course, jumping into several gears at once is not an easy task. Switching to two gears or more is accompanied by a delay. But there is such a function, and in an emergency you can drop several gears.

And now about the car versions. For the most picky buyers, Mercedes has provided the ML 63 AMG version. The most “serious” customers will receive the ML 63 AMG Performance Package. Mercedes ML (Mercedes-Benz W164) is the second generation of the popular M-class SUV from the German automobile brand Mercedes-Benz. The three-pointed star on the hood has always evoked special awe among most car enthusiasts, but not everyone can afford a new car of this class. At the moment, prices for used ML have become more affordable, thanks to which car enthusiasts, for whom status and prestige play an important role, can fulfill their old dream. When buying a car at the age of 7-10 years, you need to be aware that such a purchase is fraught with additional costs. But what they are, and what you should pay attention to when choosing a used Mercedes ML (W164) on the secondary market, I will tell you in this article.

A little history:

Work on the development of the Mercedes ML (W164) began back in 1999 and lasted 6 years. Steve Mattin worked on the car design project under the strict guidance of Peter Pfeiffer for more than 2 years. Testing of the prototype was carried out throughout 2003 - 2004 and completed at the beginning of 2005. The debut of the Mercedes ML (W164) took place in 2005 at the International Auto Show in North America. In April of the same year, mass production was launched. The car was assembled in the USA at the Chrysler plant located in Tuscaloosa (Alabama).

The new product was built on a common platform with the GL-class, thanks to which it was possible to increase the body size and wheelbase compared to its predecessor (W163). In 2008, at the New York auto show, a restyled version of the car was presented to the public. The main changes affected the front and rear bumpers, optics and radiator grille (it was increased in size and equipped with chrome inserts along the edges). Changes also affected the model range, albeit slightly: the diesel model ML 420 CDI was updated, the ML 280 CDI was renamed ML 300 CDI, the ML 320 CDI was renamed ML 350 CDI, and the ML 420 CDI was renamed ML 450 CDI. In 2009, the new ML 450 Hybrid SUV was presented at the New York Auto Show. Production of the second generation M-Class lasted 6 years and ended in 2011, and was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz W166 series car.

Weaknesses of Mercedes ML (W164) with mileage

The body of the Mercedes ML (W164) has practically no weak points - it is not afraid of corrosion, but only on the condition that the car was not restored after an accident. But chrome elements do not withstand the harsh realities of our winters and quickly become cloudy, after which they begin to bloom. When inspecting the car, be sure to check the trunk door; on most copies it is skewed (the screws holding the door hinge are destroyed). There may also be problems with door locks (mechanism failure, failures in the “Keyless Go” keyless entry software). If there is moisture in the trunk, the problem most likely lies in worn out lamp seals. If you do not pay attention to this for a long time, over time, problems will begin with the SAM unit, since its electronic board is located in the right niche of the trunk.

Most often found on the secondary market is a 3.5-liter gasoline power unit. Operating experience has shown that the engine is generally reliable, but some shortcomings have still been identified. As a rule, problems begin after the first 100,000 miles. The most common drawback is wear of the cermet sprockets of the balance shaft. If there is a breakdown, in most cases the “Check Engine” error is displayed on the instrument panel. Also, a signal about the presence of a problem will be the “dilation” of the engine, vibrations and metallic ringing when starting a cold engine. Another problem with characteristic symptoms is stretching of the timing chain, this occurs at a mileage of 100-150 thousand km.

Replacing the chain and shaft sprockets is a rather labor-intensive process (to perform the work it is necessary to remove the motor), which is why the cost of the work is quite high (1500-3000 USD). It is this fact that forces many owners to get rid of the car at the first alarm bells (be sure to conduct a full engine diagnostics before purchasing). When performing repairs, it is advisable to immediately replace the chain guide, the magnets of the camshaft adjustment mechanism and the oil pump, so as not to pay twice for the removal and installation of the power unit. Often, owners of cars with a 5.5 engine (388 hp) encounter the same problems, however, in this case, eliminating most of the shortcomings does not require removing the engine, which significantly reduces the cost of repairs. Closer to the mileage of 150,000 km, many Mercedes ML (W164) owners have to change the exhaust manifold due to problems with the vacuum rods of the adjustable dampers (on copies after 2007, this problem was eliminated). A signal that there is a problem will be a wandering idle speed.

All gasoline engines suffer from oil leaks, most often leaks appear on the plastic plugs of the cylinder head. Also, on a car with a mileage of more than 100,000 km, oil leaks can be found at the junction of the filter housing and the oil cooler heat exchanger due to a leaky seal. Reliability of Mercedes ML (W164) suspension

The quality of the interior finishing materials of the Mercedes ML (W164) leaves an ambiguous impression. Mersedes-Benz M-class is a family of off-road vehicles with a station wagon body and permanent all-wheel drive (W163 platform).

The roomy 5-door ML-Class body with additional seats in the luggage compartment can carry seven passengers. The cargo compartment volume is 0.16 m3, and when the rear seats of the third row are folded, the trunk increases to a respectable 0.633 m3. In the 2-seater version, the car thus turns into a spacious van with a capacity of up to 2.02 m3. The car is equipped with a device for transporting a heavy trailer - it is capable of pulling a trailer weighing up to 2650 kg. Maximum speed is from 177 to 186 km/h.

The concept of the car was initially built with the expectation of ensuring the highest possible safety in a collision, which was reflected both in the work on the basics of the body structure and in its detailed elaboration. Based on the company's standards, which apply to all Mercedes passenger cars and have clear differences from many other passive safety standards for SUVs, in severe collisions, M-Class cars provide passengers with significantly above average protection potential. The all-terrain vehicle is not made with a monocoque body, but is based on a frame structure. Two spars and three cross members, made of rigid closed box-shaped profiles, are welded into a structure shaped like a ladder. The body is firmly connected to the frame using ten rubber supports, which dampen vibrations and noise that occurs during driving and do not allow them to pass into the cabin. Thanks to this robust design, M-Class occupants are exposed to minimal risk of body deformation in frontal, rear or side collisions, while maintaining the same size of passenger compartment and providing sufficient space for survival. In addition, the deformable structure of the front part and the low-lying frame are designed in such a way that upon impact they absorb part of the energy of the second participant in the collision.

The ML introduced interesting technical ideas, especially those related to all-wheel drive. Unlike most competitors, the car has permanently engaged all-wheel drive. The company’s specialists abandoned the differential locks in the junction box and in the drive axles, as was the case with the G model, but equipped the car with an electronic traction control system on each wheel, the Four Wheel Electronic System (4-ETS), that replaced these functions. Thus, if one of the wheels slips, traction is provided by braking it, which in off-road conditions gives the same effect as using a mechanical lock. A special “off-road” ABS mode allows the front wheels to lock on steep slopes. Except for the ML230 model, all others are equipped as standard with the EPS dynamic stabilization system, which improves the vehicle's directional stability in any road conditions.

M-class cars appeared in Western Europe in the spring of 1998. The delivery program included three model variants with four-, six- or eight-cylinder petrol engines: the base ML230, equipped with a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 110 kW/150 hp. With. at 5400 rpm; The 6-cylinder ML 320 model has a V6 engine with 160 kW/218 hp, which features low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. In 2000, these cars remained unchanged, but the lineup was supplemented by two new base variants - the economical ML270 CDI and the powerful ML55 AMG. The first is equipped with an in-line 5-cylinder 2.7-liter turbocharged diesel engine with a Common-Rail system producing 163 hp. and a manual 6-speed gearbox. It has higher dynamic qualities than the petrol ML230, and is about a quarter more economical. The ML55 AMG with a 5.4-liter V8 closes the lineup. The car has a top speed of 232 km/h. The chassis of this car has the unique qualities of a sports station wagon. However, it contains the ability to confidently drive on bad roads.

The first modernization of ML-class all-terrain vehicles was carried out in the summer of 2001. In the post-restyling version, the ML has come closer to its German relatives in terms of the level of luxury equipment, the feeling of comfort and quality and thoughtful design. Recognized by the Americans as one of the safest off-roaders, the ML received 8 airbags, of which only the rear side ones are not supplied as standard.

The appearance of the car has been updated due to a modified front bumper, which began to consist of two parts, new lighting equipment in the form of crystal-optical headlights, rear-view mirrors with duplicate turn signals have also been added, and 17-inch wheels are now standard for all ML 6-spoke pattern. The interior of the cabin has changed: all modifications now include a wooden center console trim, automatic climate control with a sensor that records solar radiation, and automatic headlights. The list of custom equipment is small: bi-xenon headlights, parking radars, multimedia COMAND with the ability to process SMS messages on the screen and two folding additional passenger seats in the trunk.

The main changes are under the hood, where two V8s moved from the S-class engine compartment: the previous ML430 was replaced by a more powerful ML500 with a 5-liter gasoline V8, reduced from 306 to 292 hp. power, allowing it to develop up to 222 km/h, as well as a powerful 250-horsepower 4-liter turbodiesel, the most powerful and highest-torque passenger diesel on the planet. This ML400 CDI reaches 213 km/h and accelerates from zero to 10 km/h in 8.1 seconds versus 7.7 for the ML500. The 5-liter easily makes short work of a heavy car, losing only one second in acceleration to the 347-horsepower top model ML55 from tuning specialist AMG (ML55, by the way, is extremely popular - it is the best-selling of all AMG cars). The rest of the power units have not changed.

In 2005, a new generation of M-Class SUVs was shown at the January NAIAS in Detroit. Serial production started in March 2005 at factories in Tuscaloosa (USA). The body of this generation has become 15 cm longer and 7 cm wider than its predecessor. Appearance has changed quite significantly. The corners have been smoothed out. The range of engines (three of them, V6 and turbodiesels, completely new) for 2006: petrol ML350 (3.5 l V6 24V, 272 hp, 350 Nm) and ML500 (5.0 l V8 24V, 306 hp. s., 460 Nbm); turbodiesel 3.0 l V6 24V with a new generation CR system in the ML280 CDI (190 hp, 440 Nbm) and ML320 CDI (224 hp, 510 Nbm) versions. The five-liter, 306-horsepower V8 is capable of accelerating the car to hundreds in 6.9 seconds, which is almost a second faster than the engine of the previous ML. The new engine was made more powerful by 14 hp and torque by 20 Nm, while maintaining the same fuel consumption.

All MLs now come standard with the seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. This is a big step forward. The gearbox knob is hidden under the steering wheel and has two positions - to turn the wheels forward and backward. There is no parking provision at all. It is replaced by a button on this handle. Everything is simple and logical.

For an additional fee, a factory tuning package from AMG is offered. Styling for the new Mercedes M-Class includes front and rear spoilers entirely in body color and designed in the characteristic AMG style. Thanks to the new front spoiler, with its emphasized angularity and vertical inserts in polished steel, the front end of the new Mercedes M-Class appears wider and lower. In addition to purely cosmetic changes, the flagship ML500 also received a more powerful 388-horsepower 5.5-liter engine. The same one that has been installed on the senior GL500 model for two years.

Many options of the pre-restyling version are now included in the basic equipment. In particular, this is the proprietary PRE-SAFE preventive passive safety system and NECK-PRO active head restraints. Changes have also affected the field of entertainment electronics. The M-Class was equipped with a new telematics system. Serial versions of the SUV began to be equipped with a hands-free device with a Bluetooth wireless interface and an Aux-In connector for connecting audio devices. It will also be possible to order a new multimedia interface, which will allow you to connect external music storage media with the on-board electronics and control system of the SUV. There are three options for a multimedia system to choose from, all of them with a color display and a keypad for entering telephone numbers and radio frequencies. In addition, Mercedes is offering for the first time another option for M-Class cars - the LinguaTronic voice control system.

At the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 2011, the world premiere of the third generation M-Class SUV took place. The car is built on a modernized platform of the previous generation and, with the same wheelbase of 2,915 mm, is 24 mm longer (4,804 mm), 16 mm wider (1,926 mm) and 19 mm lower (1,796 mm). At the same time, the use of light alloys, both in the manufacture of the engine and body parts, made it possible to slightly reduce the overall weight of the SUV. The large dimensions of the car have a good effect on comfort, interior and trunk capacity. The trunk volume of the Mercedes ML-350 can reach 2 cubic meters. The appearance of the new ML-Class 2012 is evolutionary in nature - the car received a massive front bumper, an enlarged radiator grille and optics with smoother outlines. Relief stampings appeared on the sides of the car, and new rear lights of a different shape became larger. The new product is offered with wheels with an updated design, available in radii from 17 to 21 inches.

The interior of the 2012 Mercedes ML-Class has been transformed more noticeably. Along with improved finishing materials, the design of the front panel has also changed. The more powerful version of the ML 350 Bluetec SUV is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine producing 258 hp. (619 Nm), accelerating the car from zero to hundreds in 7.5 seconds and providing a top speed of 224 km/h. Finally, the top version at the moment is the ML 350 BlueEfficiency with a 306-horsepower petrol six, producing 370 Nm of maximum torque and allowing a speed of 235 km/h. Regardless of the engine type chosen, they are all paired with a seven-speed 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and have the proprietary 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

The latest generation of Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, as the creators assure, has a huge number of advantages, the most significant of which is a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Compared to the previous generation, fuel consumption has decreased by more than thirty percent. The car consumes only 14 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers. Under the hood is a V8 engine with a volume of five and a half liters, and the maximum power it can develop is five hundred and fifty horsepower. In addition to such a powerful engine, there is a seven-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes less than five seconds. The maximum speed is 250 kilometers per hour.

Of course, Mercedes pays great attention to safety, so the new 2012 M-Class is equipped with a variety of different systems, including night vision with pedestrian detection, driver fatigue detection, blind spot monitoring, automatic braking in dangerous situations, Lane Keeping Assist, Pre-Safe Lighting Control, Variable Cruise Control, and many others.
