Update Google Play services on Android. What to do if Chrome does not want to update to the latest version? Why is the Google Chrome browser not updating?

Google from time to time releases new versions of one of the most popular browsers - Chrome. Each time, developers review the functioning of the browser and correct errors and vulnerabilities identified during the time that has passed since the release of the latest version.

Unfortunately, not everyone understands the importance of these updates because they are often invisible. Most often they correct the internal content, not the appearance. Please note a number of versions released at the end of 2017 - beginning of 2018.

Automatic update

Chrome updates automatically in the background. This was the case at the very beginning, when the developers just launched the browser, and it remains so to this day. This is one of the main reasons that has allowed it to become one of the most popular web browsers. Since its release, it has gradually convinced everyday users, and then large companies, that it is a great replacement for Microsoft Explorer, once the leading browser.

Since Chrome updates automatically, most users only need to restart it. The browser checks for updates on its own from time to time. According to the developers, browsers check for updates every 23 hours or so. Once they are detected, the browser will download them and prepare them for installation. They will take effect immediately after restarting the browser.

Note! Not all updates reach all users immediately after they are released. For example, if the computer has not been used for a long time, or the computer does not have Internet access, these updates may be missed. Therefore, the company distributes updates over several days, and sometimes weeks.

Find out when updates will be released

Google releases updated versions of its browser approximately every two months, but there are no special dates, it's always different. Google doesn't follow a strict schedule like Mozilla Firefox.

Many users don't even notice when Chrome updates automatically, since many of the innovations relate to the internal working mechanisms. You can view all ever released versions of the browser on the Internet, for example, on the my-chrome.ru blog. Information about innovations is also published in the online blog about Chrome from Google.

Moreover, Google allows ordinary people to download and test beta versions of new updates. This means that any user can get access to all innovations even before their release.

This can be interesting for users and very useful for developers, since it is expected that you will not only use the latest version, but also notify developers of possible errors. Moreover, the company undertakes to provide you with the highest possible Internet speed for your assistance.

Update Chrome manually

Step 2. Go to the browser's official website.

How to cancel an update or pause auto-update

Sometimes, after unsuccessfully installing a new version, you may need to uninstall it, or perhaps you liked the previous interface better. Whatever the reason, it is better not to do this because:

  • updates improve browser performance;
  • Each new update fixes errors from previous versions;
  • they increase your safety.

Knowing the importance of updates, you can decide for yourself whether you need to roll back your browser to a previous version. However, you can stop automatic browser updates by taking personal control of them.

Step 1. Open the folder that contains all the documents related to Google Chrome. On many computers, you can do the following: “My Computer” > “Drive C” > “Program Files” > “Google”.

It contains three folders, one of which contains all the updates. It is into this that all files and new versions of Chrome are downloaded and subsequently installed automatically.

Step 2. Rename this folder in any way, for example, as in the screenshot above, but do not delete it.

That's all, you don't need to do anything else. Now Google will no longer update without your knowledge. From now on, this will have to be done exclusively manually.

A feature of the Google Chrome browser is automatic updates. They make the user's life much easier. After all, in order to work with the latest version of the Internet browser, you do not need to search for and manually download updates yourself; the program does it for the user. But sometimes errors occur during automatic updating, which can be easily resolved.

Possible mistakes

Google Chrome offers a free update, as does the browser itself, which is freely available on the developers’ website. Of course, sometimes errors may occur when searching. Among the fairly common ones is error 3. A similar message on the monitor means that it was not possible to connect to the update server. It is quite possible that the situation is due to the fact that the browser can only be launched as an administrator. For security reasons, Google does not recommend such settings. You can change them by right-clicking on the browser icon and selecting the desired option in the context menu that appears.

If you are trying to update Google Chrome and you get error 7, it means that it was downloaded to your computer, but the program failed to install it. You can correct the situation by trying to update your browser manually. If this does not help, then try deleting it again.

Error 1 indicates that the browser cannot be updated in the current section. To fix this, first look at the browser version in the About the browser section. If there are several here at once, then it is obvious that the necessary files have already been removed from the directory. They will need to be restored.

How to remove the error

If an error occurs: updates are disabled by the administrator, Google Chrome will stop automatically installing new versions of the browser. If you are not satisfied with this, then you can use one of the following options. The first one is to completely remove the Internet browser from your computer. To do this, you need to use the Programs and Features tool in the Start menu. After all browser elements are deleted, you will need it again.

The second option is much more complicated - you will need to correct the values in the registry. If you are not very comfortable with technology and are performing a similar procedure for the first time, then you should do everything extremely carefully. Never make changes or delete values that you do not know about. In order to get into the Registry, enter the regedit command in the search bar. The next step is to find the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE folder. Here we go to the Policies branch and consistently follow the path Goo gle\Update.

In the folder that opens, you need to delete the Update key, which has a value of 0. This command symbolizes the prohibition of updating google chrome. If parameter 1 is set here, this means that updates for the application are allowed in any situation. The number 2 will indicate that only manual installation of the new version is possible.

It is not recommended to disable automatic browser updates. After all, when the function is enabled, new versions of the application, characterized by more stable operation, will be available almost immediately after release. Of course, the user can slightly change the settings, setting them as convenient for him. For example, you can delay automatic updates. This setting is convenient and recommended for low Internet speeds.

Nowadays, almost every second person uses the Google Chrome browser and, accordingly, he sometimes asks the question: how can Google Chrome itself update to the latest version that has just been released?

When does the update arrive?

Updates appear rarely. About once every two, maybe three months. Therefore, there is no need to particularly look for it. In principle, there is no update schedule; everything entirely depends on the browser developers. Developers make decisions about releasing updates based on the situation on the Internet, the emergence of new threats and the identification of vulnerabilities in the browser.

If you think that some movie you are launching does not work, or the site does not open normally and the reason for this is an outdated version of Google Chrome, then most likely you are mistaken. Probably, your Flash player is simply not working correctly.

How to update Google Chrome?

In fact, everything is very simple. Most likely, you are updating your Google Chrome without even noticing it.

Automatic update

This is done by turning off the computer. For example, if you turn off your computer at night or at other times, then when you turn it on again, Google Chrome will already be updated.

Manual update

Those users who do not turn off their computer for several days in a row can update their browser manually. To do this, you will need to pay attention to the “Configure and manage Google Chrome” icon, which looks like three vertical dots and is located in the upper right corner of the browser (circled in a red frame in Fig. 1).

Fig.1. Set up and control Google Chrome icon (three dots in a red frame)

If a new version of Google Chrome appears, but your computer has not updated it for some reason, the “Customize and manage Google Chrome” icon will be highlighted

  • green if the update is available for 2 days,
  • orange if the update was released 4 days ago,
  • in red if suddenly the update is already 7 days old.

Usually the tab is gray, so it will be impossible not to notice the change in its color.

If we digress a little from the topic, this is reminiscent of the color differentiation of pants from the movie “Kin-dza-dza”. Remember, as Yuri Yakovlev’s hero says: “No, genatsvale! When society has no color differentiation of pants, there is no purpose!”

In our case, if the tab is a regular gray color, then there is no purpose in updating the browser. And if it has changed its color from the usual gray to another, then this means that the user has a goal to update his Google Chrome.

  • Click on the three dots (that is, on the “Customize and manage Google Chrome” icon) and
  • We are looking for the line “Update Google Chrome”. Click on it.
  • A window immediately appears asking you to restart Google Chrome.
  • Click “Restart” and the browser is updated. You can click "Not Now". Then Google Chrome will update immediately after you turn it off for the first time.

If the item "Update Google Chrome" » no, it means you are already using the latest version of the browser.

Rice. 2. There is no “Update Google Chrome” item in the menu, which means the latest version of the browser is being used
  • If you click the menu (1 in Fig. 2),
  • then click on “Help” (2 in Fig. 2),
  • finally open “About Google Chrome browser” (3 in Fig. 1),

then we will see a message that “The latest version of Google Chrome is already installed” (Fig. 3).

Help from the official website

Who knows best about their brainchild, that is, about the Google Chrome browser, if not the parents (in the sense of the browser developers). Therefore, below is a link to help from the official website “How to update Google Chrome”.

The importance of updating programs, in particular the Google Chrome browser, on every device is undeniable, but why should users download the update? Let's look at how the average user can do this without extra effort.

Why and how often do you need to update Google Chrome?

Regularly updating any browser, including Google Chrome, will protect you from:

  • viruses. New versions of viruses appear every day, so browsers become vulnerable over time and expose your computer to the risk of infection. Browser developers analyze new viruses and create new systems to protect against them. Thus, the update significantly reduces the risk of infection;
  • Browser malfunctions. If you notice that Google Chrome has become slower and crashes more often, the problem may be that it is not updated.

With a browser update, you can get a number of new functions that make browsing the Internet more comfortable.

How to find out the current version of Google Chrome

Google Chrome usually updates automatically, like most modern browsers. Then why know the current version of the browser if the developers themselves monitor the updates? The fact is that for some reason the automatic update may not occur. In this case, you need to do the upgrade yourself. To find out if an update is needed, check your current browser version:

How to update Google Chrome using different methods

There are several ways to manually update Google Chrome. Let's look at the most famous of them.

With Secunia PSI

The Secunia PSI program allows you to upgrade many programs on your computer, including browsers. It also automates the update process and detects vulnerabilities in third-party software. The PSI setting is carried out as follows:

  1. Download and install the program from a trusted source. Open the software and click on Scan Now to find the latest updates for Google Chrome. Secunia PSI will begin the analysis, which may take some time.

    Click on the Scan Now button so that the program starts searching for available software updates

  2. After the analysis is completed, the Programs that need updating section will appear in the program window. If you see the Google Chrome browser in it, left-click on it once.

    Find the Google Chrome icon in the Programs that need updating section

  3. Select a language and click on Select language. The program will start downloading updates and then install them itself. Under the browser icon in the Secunia PSI window there will be a sign Downloading update.

    The Downloading update mark indicates that the program is downloading updates for the selected software

  4. After some time, the program will move the browser to the next section Up-to-date programs. This will mean that Google Chrome has been updated to the latest version.

If after the analysis stage the Google Chrome icon does not appear, this means that the browser does not require updates.

Checking for browser updates

To help the Google Chrome browser update itself, you need to go to the section describing the program:

By reinstalling the program

Updating Google Chrome by reinstalling it occurs in three stages: saving browser data, removing the program from the computer and reinstalling it from the official website. This method is suitable for you if the previous ones did not work, when the built-in tools or third-party program did not detect the latest updates.

Saving browser data

Since in the next step we will delete the browser, the information that has accumulated in it for a long time will also disappear. These are bookmarks, browsing history, passwords, forms, etc. If you do not want to lose all this data, do the following:

  1. Go to the “Create a Google Account” page using your browser search.
  2. Fill out all fields of the form:
  3. Click on "Next".
  4. Write your phone number (optional), another email address to protect your account, date of birth and gender.

    Enter additional information for your future Google account

  5. Click on the blue “Next” button again.
  6. The service will offer to send an SMS to your phone number to confirm it. Click on “Send” or “Not Now”. Enter the code from SMS in the field and click on “Confirm”.
  7. Click on “I Accept.” Your Google account has been created.

In your Google account, you can set up synchronization as follows:

It is not necessary to create a Google account. This is only necessary if you need to save all your bookmarks, history, and browser passwords. If you're happy with a blank browser with no information, skip this step. Now you can proceed to uninstalling the program from your computer.

Uninstalling Google Chrome

There are two ways to remove any program from your computer's memory: using standard Windows tools and using third-party utilities. The difference is that third-party programs remove the software completely, along with registry entries and other residual files. If you remove a program using the built-in tool, there is a risk that the files remaining in memory will conflict with the files of the newly installed browser, so let’s consider the second removal method:

  1. Download the program from the official website and install it on your computer.

    Download the free version of Revo Uninstaller

  2. Launch the program. A window will open in which you will find a list of programs installed on the PC.
  3. Find Google Chrome. Right-click on the item and select the “Delete” function in the context menu.

    Select scan level for residual files in PC memory associated with Google Chrome

  4. Revo Uninstaller will launch the uninstall and then begin scanning your computer's memory for files in the registry that are associated with Google Chrome.

When the complete removal of the program is completed, be sure to restart your PC.

Installing the latest version of Google Chrome

Now proceed to install the latest version of the browser:

Browser reinstallation is complete. If you want to return all your bookmarks and other information to your browser, sign in to your previously registered Google account.

Errors when updating Google Chrome

The Google Chrome browser may experience problems while updating. Usually errors have codes that can be used to determine the cause of the problem. The main ones:

  • error 9 - the new browser version is incompatible with the already installed one;
  • error 11 - the expand.exe file, without which the update is impossible, is currently unavailable;
  • error 13 - another program is blocking the update;
  • error 101 - a directory cannot be created on the hard drive.

How to fix errors

If you have problems updating the Google Chrome browser, use the following tips:

  • Check your firewall, parental controls and antivirus settings. Perhaps it was these programs that prohibited access to the official website of the developer, namely tools.google.com and dl.google.com;
  • make sure that the update checking system has access to the Internet;
  • check the system for malware using a basic antivirus. A virus may affect the installation of updates;
  • Make sure your operating system is up to date. Google Chrome no longer works on operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. If your computer has one of these operating systems, install their new versions;
  • restart your computer and update your browser again;
  • reinstall the program using the method described above in the “By reinstalling the program” section.

If you are unable to update, please contact your administrator to complete the browser update.

Because Google Chrome's automatic updates may not work in some situations, check from time to time to see if new versions of the browser are available, especially if it has become slower. You can update your browser for free in three ways: in the browser itself in a window with information about it, through Secunia PSI and by completely reinstalling the program. If the update fails, check your PC for viruses, and also make sure that your OS is not outdated.

How can I update Google Play Services to use the latest version offered by the developers? To complete this task, you can use the Play Market. Updates are installed manually or downloaded automatically, provided that the appropriate permission is set in the settings.

Automatic update

What can I do to ensure that the firmware updates itself? Launch the Play Market, go to settings and turn on auto-update. If this function is activated, the phone starts downloading updates for all programs. This way you can quickly and quietly update all Google Play services.

It is recommended to select the “Wi-Fi only” mode. Why? Updates weigh quite a lot, so if you download them for all applications using mobile traffic, you can quickly go into the red. The app store itself also needs an update. Here's what to do to check for a new version and install it:

  1. Launch Play Market, open settings.
  2. Click on "Build Version".

If there is an update, you will be prompted to install it. If you see that the version is old, but the program is not updated, use manual installation.

Manual update

Let's see how to update Google Play manually if auto-update doesn't work or you don't want to use it. There is 1 simple way to check if there are updates and install them.

  1. Launch a store. Call the main menu and go to the “My Applications” section.
  2. Open the "Installed" tab. All installed applications will be here, including built-in programs.

For example, you need to upgrade Google Calendar. If there is an “Update” button next to it, then there is an update. If there is no such button, then the developers simply have not released the upgrade yet. In this way you can check all available programs.

To update Google Play and Google Play services on Android for free, you can download their APK files to your computer, then transfer them to the memory of your mobile device and start the installation. This method will take longer than a manual update through the Play Market. But reinstallation will help if Google services are not updated.

If you decide to download Play Market and Google services for free, then download them from trusted sites - for example, 4pda.ru. In this case, you can be sure that you will install the latest versions of the software without unnecessary problems.

Uninstalling updates

If problems arise with updated applications, you can remove the updates by rolling them back to the original version. What to do:

  1. Open the Applications section in Settings.
  2. Go to the All tab.
  3. Find Google Play Services. Open and click "Uninstall updates". If the services have not been updated, the button will be inactive.

The button may be inactive for another reason - the activated Device Administrator function. To disable it, go to the “Security” section, go to the “Device Administrators” subsection and deactivate remote control by unchecking the box.
