Determine the speed of the Internet connection online. How to check Internet speed - online connection test on a computer and phone, SpeedTest, Yandex and other meters

Any person connected to the global network (and most of them nowadays) sooner or later has a question - how to check internet speed is free? Someone wants to test the new tariff of their provider - is it not deceiving? Does the advertised speed match the actual speed? Others need to accurately measure the Internet connection speed in Mbps in order to decide whether it will meet the needs of the family when switching to Wi-Fi or something more powerful is needed. Well, the rest are just worried about the question - whether to leave the torrent to download a fresh series for the night, whether it will have time to download and they need to know how to measure the speed of the Internet on their computer. In general, this question is relevant, and our today's article will be the answer to it.

How to Check Internet Speed with Speedtest

The simplest and most effective way is to check the speed of the Internet online using the Speedtest service. It's absolutely free, fast and accurate.

speed test(Speedtest) is an authoritative online service for checking Internet speed, with the ability to customize the language, units of measure, server, etc., as well as save and compare your results (for registered users). The developer of the Speedtest is Ookla. Today, Speedtest is actually one of the best internet speed meters out there. it not advertising, our editors use Speedtest themselves and are satisfied so far.

How to check internet speed with Speedtest? Simply and easily. We go to the Russian version of the site - speedtest.net/ru You will see a stylish green meter picture depicting the continents of our planet with the designation of your current location.

The main page of Speedtest displays your current location, IP address, ISP and, most importantly, the “Start test” button for network speed
speedtest.net/ru

You can click anywhere on the map at the bottom of the picture and then select any item (bright white dot) on the enlarged map section at the top. When hovering over a point with the cursor, it will appear server list, from which you can choose any and check the speed of the Internet on it.

You can choose any available server to test network speed

The green circle with a triangle represents your current location with the nearest server. It is determined automatically. By clicking on the triangle, you can also select another server from the list that appears.

But you can leave everything as it is. If you just want to quickly check the speed of your Internet connection - do not change the default settings.

Please note that in the lower left corner information is displayed with your IP address and the name of the provider. This might be helpful. If you left-click on an IP address, it will automatically be copied to the clipboard.

In the opposite right corner, the constantly changing number of Internet speed checks for today is displayed. Ten million checks... quite a few! This already speaks of the credibility of the service.

And, most importantly, at the top there is a big green button " Start verification". We click on it. In this case, it is advisable to disable all programs using the network, and not switch the tab with the test.

Deciphering the results of checking the speed of the Internet Speedtest

So, you press the button, and the service will start testing the speed of the Internet connection. You'll have to wait a couple of minutes. Finally, an information window will appear with test results Internet connection speed.

Speedtest network speed test results: ping, upload and download speed
The image uses a screenshot from speedtest.net/ru

Let's decrypt this data:

  • ping (ping)- this is the period of time for which information (network data packet) from your computer gets to the server and returns to you. Ping is measured in thousandths of a second - milliseconds (ms, ms). The smaller it is, the better;
  • receiving speed- that is, the download speed, in Mbps;
  • transmission speed- the speed of uploading, transferring data from your computer to another computer. It is also measured in Mbps. Naturally, the higher the transmission speed and the receiving speed, the better.

Additionally, you can test the quality of your Internet connection. Another service of this company, Pingtest, is designed for this. We will talk about it and ping testing in more detail in the next article.

In the meantime, use Speedtest to monitor and test the speed of your Internet connection. And if there is a significant discrepancy with the declared speed of the tariff, feel free to contact the provider with the requirement to fix the problem and provide you with the promised speed.

Don't forget about other ways to speed up the Internet, such as by .

Good luck and fast internet!

We have other interesting articles too!

Prostoweb decided to learn the secrets of measuring and globally checking the speed of the Internet offered by your ISP using special testing programs and services: Speedtest or Speedtest, 2ip.ru, Realspeed. What is my internet speed? - after all, this question worries many Internet users. Let's study the internet speed test together!

How is internet speed measured?

Therefore, in reality, “the speed or measurement of the speed of the Internet” is nothing more than the speed of data transfer on the network, which depends on many factors.

This speed is measured in physical units as the ratio of the transmission time to the amount of information transmitted. Many have heard about indicators such as Kbps, Mbps, Gigabits / sec, they, like the speed of a car, show how quickly the desired file from the network or a web page “reaches” us.

A byte is a unit of storage and processing of digital information.

  • 1 Byte = 8 bits. It is to the byte that all the large amounts of information that are calculated in computer technology are given.
  • 1 kilobyte (KB) = 1024 bytes.
  • 1 megabyte (MB) = 1024 KB. It is used to measure the volume of storage media.
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) = 1024 MB.

Data transfer speed (connection speed) is measured in kilobits per second (Kbps). Megabits per second (Mbps) = 1024 Kbps.

Beginning Internet users often confuse kilobits with kilobytes. Therefore, let's look at an example. Imagine that, in our tariff plan, the Internet speed is 0.5 Mbps or 512 Kbps (Kb) per second. If we translate the speed into kilobytes, we get 512 Kbps / 8 = 64 Kbytes / s. It is this maximum speed that should be expected when displaying the download speed in download managers or torrent clients.

In reality, the speed will always be slightly lower than stated in the tariff plan of your provider. If you need to convert from one connection speed unit to another, use the online calculator to help you with this.

For clarity of connection speed indicators, let's imagine a typical web page that takes 100 kilobytes, a song - an average of 3072 kilobytes (3 megabytes), a movie - 1572864 kilobytes (1.5 gigabytes). Let's make a table of dependence of download speed on Internet speed.

How to test internet speed

In most cases, you have to pay for the speed of Internet access. And the higher it is, the more expensive it will cost us. The main thing that every user should be worried about is whether we really get what we pay for. To check and control the speed of the Internet, there are several groups of software products.

Online tests

These are sites that host scripts that show your speed relative to any site. It should be noted that the readings of these sites give an error. Even with two consecutive tests, you can get results that differ by 20-30%. To improve the accuracy of tests, you must turn off all programs that consume traffic. And also choose the tester that is closest to you geographically. It is useful to take a number of measurements at different times of the day, given that the test servers can be loaded at certain times of stock.

The most famous free sites for testing Internet speed:

  • http://speedtest.net/ - one of the most famous services for testing the speed of the Internet connection. To start the test, click "Begin Test" and get the download speed and file upload speed.
  • http://2ip.ru/speed/ is a hoster that provides a huge number of tests and comprehensive information about your connection.
  • http://www.speedtest.com.ua/speedtest-net.htm - a simplified version of speedtest.net.
  • http://www.speedtest.com.ua/ - also a simple speed test on the Ukrainian domain. Press the "Start Test" button.
  • http://realspeed.co.kz/ - another Russian-language tester.
  • http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed/ - this tester can show summary statistics for 25 measurements and also allows you to check speeds against servers in different countries of the world.

Programs for determining and testing Internet speed that require installation on a PC

There are very few such programs, because it is better to test the Internet download speed between your computer and a remote server, which are the sites described above.

Many who have already encountered Internet speed testing services have noticed that the result of these tests quite often diverges from the tariff plan (the speed provided by the provider). The majority, not delving into the details and subtleties of the services, prefer to believe the indicated results of the speed test, on, perhaps for the first time, an open site. And then calls to the technical support of the provider begin with complaints and claims. Often, long negotiations with technical support end in nothing - the recommendations of the technical staff are difficult to fulfill, or scary. And, as a result, the client is not satisfied.

We did a little testing of the most popular Internet connection speed testing services and decided to find out which service to give the most preference to, and also tried to find out why speed measurements show such different results. On each of the sites, we carried out from 3 to 5 measurements, citing here the best indicators.

For testing, we used a simple system unit with a dual-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, installed with the Windows 7 operating system. The computer is not installed, the firewall is disabled. All components and modules (including the flash player) have been updated. Used browsers: Opera, Chrome, Fire Fox, Safari, testing was carried out in each of them. The network card is the most inexpensive, with an interface speed of 100 Mbps (Full duplex). The computer was connected with a 3-meter twisted pair cable to a Cisco L2 switch with a 1 Gb / s port (auto) and an external interface (Internet channel) 2 Gb / s (LACP bonding mode 2).

In total, an analogue of broadband Internet access was obtained with a speed limited by the bandwidth of the computer's network card - 100 Mbps.

Speedtest.net by Ookla - Global Speed Test

speedtest.net- probably one of the first and most popular services for checking the main network parameters. The test itself was created on the basis of flash technology, which, on the one hand, is beautiful, convenient and visual, on the other hand, it can fail - an incorrectly installed flash player on your computer, or a browser flash module is not able to fully implement speed testing, and , as a result - measurement errors.

The web interface of the page http://www.speedtest.net/ looks like a map with the ability to select a server with which to test.

When you open the www.speedtest.net page, the service determines your location. Very useful in this service is the choice of the server with which you want to test, because the fewer intermediate nodes between your computer and the server, the more accurate the measurement results will be.

Before testing begins, a ping test takes place - the server's response time to your request to it.

Immediately, after measuring the ping, the download speed is measured - Download.

After measuring your upload speed, the service will automatically start measuring upload speed - Upload, the speed at which you can upload and transfer files to the Internet.

Outgoing speed testing - Upload.

After performing all the tests - ping, incoming and outgoing speed, the results will appear on the screen with a suggestion to repeat the test ( TEST AGAIN), or select another server ( NEW SERVER) to check the Internet settings.

Test result.

Next, using the service Speedtes.Net, we have chosen another, the most remote server in Kyiv, the data to which will pass through several Data Centers, by this we will show the influence of intermediate nodes on the accuracy of testing measurement.

Selecting a remote server located in Kyiv.

Speed testing with a server located in Kyiv.

Here it is worth paying attention to the increase in ping to 13 ms, which indicates data delays on intermediate servers and routers located between us and Kyiv.

Result for Speedtest.net by Ookla - 95/95 Mbps with our bandwidth of 100 Mbps, this is the most accurate result.

If you need to do testing with our server located in Torez, go here.

Bandwidthplace.com - speed test for all devices

bandwidthplace.com- just like Speedtest.Net uses flash technology to measure network speed. Everything is more modest here, the choice of servers (button Select Server) for testing is small, only about 15, the location of which says that the service is focused on America and Japan. The closest to us was Frankfurt (Germany).

The result of the check, to put it mildly - no. With our actual channel width of 100 Mbps, the Bandwidthplace.com service showed only 11 Mbps - 10 times lower than our real speed. Moreover, we did not manage to check our outgoing speed using this service.

Bandwidthplace.com speed test.

The remoteness of the server and a large number of intermediate nodes to it are to blame. We counted 8 pieces.

Route trace to the server - Bandwidthplace.com.

Result for Bandwidthplace.com - 11/-- Mbps with our bandwidth of 100 Mbps - this service is not suitable for our region.

2ip.Ru - Portal of network services

2ip.Ru- probably one of the first Russian-language services for the Internet. Among them is the speed check service.

Before checking, the service offers to enter your speed according to the tariff plan, for further evaluation - declared / actual.

The lack of choice of the nearest server affected the results.

The result of the Internet connection speed is 2ip.Ru.

Despite the fact that the 2ip.ru service is aimed at Russian-speaking network users, it is located in Germany, so the service is more suitable for the western regions of the CIS countries (Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg ...). In view of the fact that there are a large number of nodes between us and the 2ip.ru service, it is not suitable for accurate measurements.

Result for 2ip.Ru - 27/7 Mbps

Pr-Cy.Ru - Analysis and verification of network resources

Pr-Cy.Ru- another popular Russian-language service that specializes in website analysis, the speed check service on it is a nice addition to other services.

The speed test page has a map that allows you to select your preferred server with the fewest nodes on the way to it for the most accurate result.

Speed test page - Pr-Cy.Ru.

After pressing the button "Start Internet Speed Test", first the server response time (ping) is measured, after which the incoming and then outgoing Internet speed will be automatically checked.

Internet speed testing on Pr-Cy.Ru website.

Internet speed test result.

The test result was disappointing, the deviations were more than 20%. Most likely, the owners of the Pr-Cy.Ru resource do not prioritize the accuracy of measuring Internet speed and pay more attention to the accuracy of their other services.

Result for Pr-Cy.Ru - 80/20 Mbps, in our opinion, a dubious service for our region.

On this, we believe, enough comparative tests. Our goal was to show that speed check services are nothing more than entertainment, you should not take them more or less seriously. We did not specifically consider other services, such as.

ISPs brag about maximum data transfer speeds, but what is the reality? The speed depends on many factors: the time and day of the week, the load on the communication channel, the technical condition of the servers, the condition of the communication lines, and even the weather. When buying a certain package of services, you want to be sure that the money is not paid in vain, and the Internet speed corresponds to the declared one.

We will check using special services on the network, because this is the most convenient, affordable and accurate way to determine the speed of the Internet. The speed is measured from the computer to the server where the service is running. Accordingly, the indicators from different services will be different.

Measured:

  • incoming speed, i.e. the one with which we download from the Internet
  • outgoing - the speed of information transfer, i.e. when data is transmitted from our computer, such as when you send an email or file, or when a torrent is opened.

As a rule, these two indicators differ, for me - up to three times, depending on what you test. The outgoing speed is usually less because it is less frequently used.

The data transfer rate is measured in kilobits or megabits. In one byte - 8 bits plus a couple of service bits. This means that with a result of 80 Mbps, the real speed is 8 MB per second. Each speed test consumes about 10-30 megabytes of traffic!

Ookla SpeedTest

The best service for today, sharpened to test the bandwidth of the Internet connection. Accurately determines the maximum possible speed for your computer at the moment.

To start the test, press the big "START" button. The service will determine the optimal server and start transmitting data. During testing, the current speed is displayed. It usually grows as the process progresses.

Pay attention to what indicators are determined:

Very approximate good values for wired internet:

  • "download" - incoming speed: 30-70 Mbps
  • "download" - outgoing speed: 10-30 Mbps
  • "PING" : 3-30ms

For mobile 3G/4G internet:

  • incoming: 5-10 Mbps
  • outgoing: 1-2 Mbps
  • PING: 15-50ms

PING is an important indicator, it is the time it takes to establish a connection. The closer the server, the lower the value and the better.

SpeedTest has servers all over the globe, so your location and closest server is determined first, then the test data is transmitted. The measured speed is the maximum possible for your computer at a given time. This is achieved due to the fact that the data exchange server is located in your city or region, and the closer the server is to the computer, the higher the speed. But you can choose any server!

Thus, it turns out that we will get a speed that is not achievable for most sites on the Internet, well, because their servers are farther away. Thanks to this "chip" I got the highest results. The figures obtained can be compared with those declared by the provider, but the actual speed on the Internet is still less.

Speedtest has applications for smartphones:

After testing, a permanent link is provided to the results and to a picture that you can show off on social networks

By checking the speed several times in a row, you will notice that it is different each time. It depends on the load of the provider and the server. Therefore, I recommend that you test several times and calculate the average speed, it will be more correct.

After registration, the history of all checks and the ability to compare them become available, which is also important. You can run the test from time to time and then see the history for the year, moreover, in a graphical representation. It will immediately become clear where your provider is developing (or vice versa, it will turn out that it is time to change it).

SpeedTest app for Windows 10

Using the application, you can find out what the connection quality of your Internet connection is.

The quality of the connection is different from the speed. For example, a file may be downloading at breakneck speed and suddenly the download is interrupted, you have to start over. After the end of the test in the application, you need to click on the results:

To determine the quality of communication, indicators are used:

  • Ripple (jitter) - phase ripple, the smaller the better. Up to 5 ms.
  • Packet loss - how many percent of the data was lost and had to be sent again. Should be 0%

Internet meter from Yandex

Unlike Speedtest, the service from Yandex measures the speed of data transfer between your laptop and its servers, only its own. It turns out that here the speed should turn out to be lower than in the speedtest, but it is closer to reality for working in RuNet.

We press the "Measure" button and wait for a while while Yandex is testing. The time will depend on the speed itself, and if it is too low, or there are communication interruptions, then the test may freeze or end with an error.

Yandex tests as follows: it downloads and uploads the test file several times, and then calculates the average value. For better accuracy, strong dips are cut off. However, after each re-check, I got different results with an error of 10-20%, which in principle is quite normal, because. speed is not a constant indicator and jumps all the time. It was during the day, and then I tested early in the morning and the result jumped by up to 50%.

Yandex Internetometer also shows the IP address and detailed technical information about the browser.

Service 2ip.ru

I have been using this wonderful service for a long time. The 2ip.ru service will also show, give full information at this address, check any of your files for viruses, tell a lot of interesting things about any site on the Internet (IP, site engine, presence of viruses, distance to the site, its availability, etc.).

2ip determines your provider, the optimal server and checks the speed between you and this server, just like SpeedTest.Net, but 2ip has fewer servers, so the PING will be higher. But there are statistics on the average speed in your city and your provider. With each repeated test, the speed changed slightly - within 10%.

Another service works on HTML5, without flash or Java, however, like the previous services.

OpenSpeedTest will help you measure throughput between Western servers. You will notice that the pings have become even higher.

Works stably, averages the received values, quite predictable and repeatable results.

The service is not of particular interest for testing high-speed Internet, but it may be of interest to those who use a modem or other not the fastest Internet. The results show average results for various network interfaces (modem, coax, ethernet, wifi) and yours for comparison.

Here is the measurement accuracy in percent. It is calculated based on whether the speed was stable during data transfer, or jumped a lot. The more stable, the higher the accuracy.

Separately, I note the testing method using . To do this, we take a torrent with a large number of seeds and look at the real data reception speed.

For everyone, before testing it is desirable:

  • Close all programs except the browser (especially those that can download something) and leave only one tab of the speed test service active
  • Wait until the end or stop all downloads in the browser!
  • Check if any program is using the network. To do this, open the "Task Manager" using the "Ctrl + Shift + Esc" buttons, go to the "Performance" tab and click on the network adapter. If there are several of them, then only one will be with the data:

See how much data was sent and transferred in the last minute. If no program uses the network, then there should be units-tens, a maximum of a hundred kbps. Otherwise, reboot and check again.

Summing up

Finally, I want to say that not a single service could determine the maximum possible indicators for my Internet connection. I say this because when downloading from torrents, my speed reaches 10 MB / s. It does this by downloading from multiple sources around the world at the same time (which is how torrents work). And services work with only one server, albeit a powerful one. Therefore, I can recommend the uTorrent program as a tester, but it works on active distributions, where there are dozens of seeders.

Do not forget that low speed may be due to, or due to a weak Wi-Fi adapter. Please write your results in the comments and do not forget to post the article on social networks.

Speed Test - Check Internet Speed / Speed TEST

Here you can easily, quickly and free of charge check the speed of your DSL connection. Click on "Start Test" below. The test usually starts within a few seconds.

DSL Speedtest / Internet Test / Speed TEST

For DSL Speed Test Please note the following: the result is not always accurate, the speed test always depends on various factors. Therefore, the measurement should only be interpreted as a guide.

Please keep other internet applications closed during the measurement, otherwise the speedtest result will be inaccurate.

How to measure it?

During internet speed testing, a test file is loaded in your browser. After about 10 seconds, we check how much data was loaded. With reference to the download time of the data, the approximate speed of the DSL (internet) can be determined. It is important that the server that contains the test file must be fast. We rely on a separate high performance server so that the result is as accurate as possible.

Internet Speed Test / DSL Speed TEST

Click in the bottom field on "Start Test" to initialize the speed test (speedtest). Make sure no other apps will be accessing the internet during the internet speed test.

How to start the Internet traffic speed test:

Click on the "Start Test" button in the box above to start the internet speed test. The test will then start and it usually takes a few seconds to complete. After completing the speedtest, you will be given the option to test again on another server that is closer to your current location. What do you need to use the speed test?:

To use the site, all you need is a modern web browser that supports HTML5. Supported Browsers: Chrome 44, Opera 31, Firefox 40, Edge, Safari 8.0, Edge 13, Safari 9.0, Chrome 42, Opera 29, Chrome 40, Opera 26, Chrome 36, Firefox 35, Firefox 37, Chrome 28, Firefox 28, Firefox 18, Safari 7.0, Opera 12.10, Internet Explorer 11, Safari 6.0, Internet Explorer 10, Safari 5.1, Internet Explorer 9, Internet Explorer 8. You don't need to install any software to use the site and it works completely in your browser on Windows, Mac OS X, Android and Linux. A small difference of 10-15% is normal, because the speed test may not be accurate (depending on the server load, you may get different cgblntcn results). If the difference exceeds 30%, then measure the speed a little later or try checking it on another server (link above). Some ISPs offer their own speed tests.

We do not take any responsibility for the results of the Internet Speed Test as the accuracy of the test depends on many factors.

Internet speed test for your site.:

Add a speed test to your site.

DSL Speed Test

DSL Speed Test measures the data transfer performance of your own DSL provider. Both downloads and data downloads are checked and compared with the values of other checks from this DSL provider. The DSL Speed Test provides important information about whether your own supplier's quality is in line with the DSL contract. It can also provide information on whether your own network is subject to significant fluctuations.

How does the DSL Speed Test work in detail?

Speed Test is a program available on a web server. When running a speed test using a web browser, the web server first caches one or more files in the user's browser cache. If multiple files are used, they are designed with different sizes and compression. When transferring data, perhaps the first measurement is the download speed. Subsequently, the data is transmitted back to the web server so that the effectiveness of the downloaded files can be determined. As a rule, the data transfer speed of downloads is much worse than that of downloads.

What limitations should be considered in the measurement results?

However, it should be noted that the results of a single measurement are not very significant. In parallel with the current measurement, other processes are running in the network that can affect the speed. Therefore, you should make sure that there are no more data transfers on the network during the test. In particular, only one computer on the network should be active. Only one browser instance should be running and other activities should be avoided on a given computer. It is also necessary to ensure that neither the antivirus nor the other program is updated at the time of testing. When all these things are taken into account, it is still necessary to perform several measurements at different times in order to find a universal value for the DSL speed test results. If you have taken several measurements, you can easily determine the average of the measurements as the actual transfer rate for the DSL connection.

DSL and Wi-Fi(WLAN)

The speed test has a lot of fluctuation if you are using Wi-Fi for this. Because an internal WLAN can be affected by various factors in its performance capabilities. Often located in cities, many wireless networks are in conflict with each other, especially when they need to operate on the same frequency. If you want to have good and meaningful results for your DSL speed test, you should try to connect with a wired network to the Internet. If necessary, you will be successful even if you can make sure that your own wireless network has a frequency that is different from all other wireless networks in the area.
