The theory of touch typing or touch typing

Before we get down to the main topic, a small but important digression. In the world there are a huge number of keyboards of different configurations and devices. I've had the pleasure of working with many of them, from huge vintage monsters to modern slim keyboards. There is absolutely no difference on what to learn touch typing. Even if you have a Mac or PC keyboard. There is little difference there.

Once, on the recommendation of friends and out of ignorance, I used the legendary Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 as a touch typing simulator. I didn’t notice any problems in use, but switching to another type of keyboard required some time and getting used to. Therefore, in this issue, I will refrain from recommending specific keyboards and we will get straight to the point. I will only note that I work with the QWERTY layout, and I recommend it for study.

The speed of touch typing depends on many factors: of course, on training and on the physiological characteristics of the structure of the hands. In this regard, as it seemed to me before, I was less fortunate than anyone else. All the time of training, the thought did not leave me that this was not mine at all, that my hands were simply “not sharpened” for touch typing on modern-type keyboards, and I was deeply convinced that somewhere in the world there is an ideal miniature keyboard that will suit only me .

Of course, after some time I realized that physiologically the difference between a long thin and a small hand is not so important in the context of the size of almost any keyboard and that everyone who practices touch typing experiences pain. Moreover, this pain is not physical - for such training, very strong nerves are needed.

The touch typing process reminded me a lot of learning to play the guitar. That feeling when nothing works out and there is a desire to throw the instrument against the wall :-).

  1. Try to do the exercises slowly, each finger is a separate key. It is better to be slow and error-free than fast and error-free. Otherwise, mistakes will be repeated and remembered again and again;
  2. You will never be able to do everything at once. Be patient, even when after the hundredth repetition you are wrong. Avoid the temptation to go back to the old printing method you used before, or mix the new method with the old one. One key - a certain finger, and nothing else. It's a pain and I remember it. I'm with you! :-)
  3. Do not try to quickly increase the pace of printing, even if you succeed. Remember how carefully you learned to ride a bike. By rapidly increasing the pace - you increase the number of errors;
  4. No matter how lazy you are, take a break from work every half an hour, turn on the simulator, feel for the starting position for printing and start typing (more on that later);
  5. At first, it will seem that all the time you will need to grope for the position and attitude of neighboring keys to it, and this is somewhat demotivating. However, it is not. Soon your hands will be fluttering over the keyboard. In the meantime, try not to “leave” your index fingers far from the starting position;
  6. At first, it will seem to you that the layout is so ill-conceived and inconvenient that the engineer most likely developed it under something. However, this feeling will soon pass;
  7. For the first time you will feel how weak your fingers are, which are destined for the most difficult fate - these are the peripheral keys. Your ring finger and little finger will forever not reach where they need to, and this can annoy you at first. This moment is also solved by training;
  8. progress will not be felt immediately, but in “waves” - at first it seems to work out, and after some time it will seem to you that you just sat down at the simulator and some moments have to be trained again. It's also somewhat demotivating, but with practice it wears off and your typing skills become relatively smooth and smooth;
  9. At first, you will notice that you get blind typing, but not as evenly as you would like. You will type in “jerks”, making small pauses to think about the next press or combination of presses. There is nothing wrong with that, just try to even out your pace;
  10. The most important thing to remember is that a worthy reward awaits you for your efforts and efforts - this is fast and easy printing which you will enjoy. You will be able to better control your posture without being distracted by the typing process, get less tired and get your work done faster than ever before.

Hand placement for touch typing

You probably noticed two keys with Russian letters A (lat. F) and O (lat. J) have small protrusions or tubercles. These protrusions are designed to determine the starting position of the index fingers. Put the index finger of your left hand on the Russian “A”, and the index finger of your right hand on the letter O. Place two thumbs on or near the space, and distribute the rest in a row horizontally to the left and right, respectively:

As a result, you should get the following:

  • Left hand:
    • The index finger of the left hand lies on the Russian letter A and gropes for the tubercle;
    • The middle finger of the left hand lies on the Russian letter B;
    • The ring finger of the left hand lies on the Russian letter Y;
    • The little finger of the left hand lies on the Russian letter F.
  • Right hand:
    • The index finger of the right hand lies on the Russian letter O and gropes for the tubercle;
    • The middle finger of the right hand lies on the Russian letter L;
    • The ring finger of the right hand lies on the Russian letter D;
    • The little finger of the right hand lies on the Russian letter Zh.

Seen from above, both hands should be in FYWA ALLJ positions, where A and O are the control keys for determining the starting position.

It is worth noting that the condition of your hands is also important. They should neither be too relaxed nor too stiff. Ideally, it should feel like you are holding a small chicken egg in a relaxed hand. Just do not overdo it when checking the size on your keyboard, otherwise you will have to buy a new one :-) Your palm should hang over the keyboard in a hemispherical state. Wrists should not hang. Put them on a table or on a stand next to the keyboard (laptop, for example). I think the meaning is clear.

Before starting training, it is worth visually dividing the keyboard into 2 parts - left (for the left hand) and right (for the right hand). Look carefully at the picture and at the dividing line. In no case should the right hand violate the border of the left hand, even if you really want to, and the left hand - the border of the right hand and climb on the symbols that are intended for the right hand. This is the first and most simple rule. Remember on the border of which keys the dividing line passes.

The spacebar in this case is the only common key that must be pressed with the thumb of the hand that is currently free. I usually use my right hand to press the space bar. But we will return to this later and turn to the recommendations of the virtual simulator.

After we have determined the positions for the index fingers and visually divided the keyboard for each hand, we will divide our areas for each specific finger.

Let's see the following image:

In addition to the division into 2 parts, we see the coloring for each finger and two starting points for the index fingers. If you look closely at the image, we see that it is the weakest finger, the little finger, that gets the most. Such is his fate, well. But the pointers are also loaded quite well. Unlike the middle and ring fingers, which account for only one row each, the index fingers of both hands serve 2 rows each. The least lucky in the world is the unfortunate little finger of the right hand, its “field of activity” is truly enormous. However, we should pay tribute - far from the most popular symbols for everyday tasks have gathered in these places.

Note that the function keys are not highlighted (control, option, command, Alt and Ctrl on the PC layout). This is due to the fact that everyone is free to get used to using them as it is convenient for him. The choice here is small - most often it will be the long-suffering little finger, although I used to press the Command keys around the spacebar with my thumbs due to their proximity to the widest Spacebar key.

Before proceeding to the next part of the lesson, to the simulator, try to write some text using the provided cheat sheet and describe your feelings in the comments. The first time you can peep. Don't forget about the starting position of the index fingers!

Touch typing practice

Use klava.org for practice. If the service on the main one does not work, click the "Δelta" button.

  1. To get started, practice in the "Russian start" and "Englisg start" modes until you achieve a typing speed of at least 100 characters per minute. Alternate them among themselves;
  2. After that, you can go to the "Russian training" and "English training" modes.

After your typing speed in the simulator is at least 150-200 characters per minute, you can try retyping free text and direct all your efforts to increase your typing speed.

  1. Try to always use the touch typing method, even if you are just chatting with friends on social networks. Yes, it will take longer than usual, but the best practice is the one that is necessary;
  2. Always return to the starting position before starting typing, even if you are sure that the next character will be expected and you are sure that you will not make mistakes;
  3. During training, do not forget to change the layout from Russian to English (“Russian training” and “English training”);
  4. Take the time to correctly write the peripheral symbols with your little finger without making mistakes. These fingers need active training the most;
  5. Hold Shift only on the opposite side of the letter or character you want to capitalize. For example, a large letter "O" on the right, respectively, you need to hold down the left Shift;
  6. Never go back to the old way of typing, even when the temptation is great. Well, unless you have a sandwich in one hand :-)
  7. When you start to notice that you are thinking less and less about letters, and your hands are typing what you need - you are at the finish line and you can be congratulated :-) The next step is speed training.

How to quickly learn touch typing with all 10 fingers? Review of programs and on-line keyboard trainers for teaching blind and fast ten-finger typing (typing).

There are even specialized courses for this purpose, and in the West this is one of the subjects in general education schools.

The main advantages of the blind typing method:

1. When typing with all fingers, the number of errors is reduced.

2. All fingers are occupied, and each of them corresponds to a certain number of letters.

3. The work becomes completely mechanical - the desired letter is unmistakably struck by the finger with which it is learned to hit it.

4. By mastering the blind ten-finger method and putting it into practice, people will save their health. They will not have to look from the keyboard to the monitor and back dozens of times, their eyes will not get tired, their vision will not deteriorate. Learners will become less tired during the working day, as a result of which they will perform more work.

5. Using the ten-finger blind method, anyone can achieve a typing speed of 300-500 characters per minute. If we take into account the work team, where all the people in it have mastered the blind ten-finger method, then they work 10% - 15% more efficiently. All letters, texts, balance sheets, reports, notes, documents are processed faster, better and more accurately.

6. When typing blindly, attention is not focused on the fact of typing, but only on how to express your thoughts (suggestions, conclusions, recommendations, conclusions) in the best possible way.

How to learn?

There are many resources, and the touch typing courses already mentioned, and online classes, and special programs. We will not stop at the courses, but we will consider programs and online simulators.

Programs

In general, most of these programs are based on a similar methodology. First, the "student" studies the middle row of the keyboard - this is FYVAPROLJE, trying to learn how to type certain letters with the corresponding fingers. Here, as practice shows, the most difficult thing is to “stir up” the ring finger and, especially, the little finger. After mastering the middle row, the upper and lower rows are added. Learning can be accompanied by irritation due to the fact that the fingers are pressing the wrong keys, that there are many mistakes, etc. - it cannot be avoided. But you don’t need to be very upset either - this is a fairly serious skill, and in order to acquire it, you need to work hard, don’t expect an easy “victory”.

SOLO on the keyboard

The most famous program in Runet for mastering the blind ten-finger typing method is SOLO on the keyboard. I will dwell on this keyboard trainer in more detail, since this is not just a program, but an advanced training course. In addition to simply typing certain letters in SOLO, the keyboard contains detailed instructions, tips and many other materials to help you cope with the annoyance of mistakes and help you not to stop halfway.

The entire course consists of 100 exercises. After passing all 100, you are guaranteed to be typing with all 10 fingers, regardless of the keyboard - verified. Each exercise contains up to 6-7 tasks. In addition, after many exercises, you will need to repeat one of the previous ones. At the beginning of each exercise, there are anecdotes from the creators of the program, which are sure to cheer you up and help you relax a bit. There are also numerous letters from people who have already gone through SOLO, in which they describe the problems they faced and what was the most difficult for them. In them you will find something of your own, and this will help you overcome difficulties. After completing the task, you will be graded on a 5-point scale.

Stamina (Recommended)

This is a free typing trainer with a simple yet "fun" interface. The author of this program is not devoid of a sense of humor and did not hesitate to express it in the program's interface. Training is based on step-by-step execution of tasks with increasing complexity. For example, in the first task, you will need to type the letters A and O in different combinations, then B and L are added, and so on. Tasks are performed to pleasant music. Also, various events in the program are accompanied by cool sounds, for example, when the program closes, Arnold Schwarzenegger's phrase “I`ll be back” sounds. The program also has an entertaining toy, which, however, does not apply to learning, but you can play.

Rapid Typing

A free application from Western developers that supports learning in Russian and English layouts. It has an attractive, friendly interface. Class statistics are kept, which helps to navigate the learning process. Below, as usual, shows the layout of the keyboard.

VerseQ

Not quite a standard keyboard trainer. The authors of the program talk about the extraordinary effectiveness of their method of mastering the blind typing method. Their website claims that after 5-15 hours of practice, you will be able to type blindly at a speed of 200-350 characters per minute. The technique is really different from the standard. Here you are immediately invited to type text consisting of letters in all rows of the keyboard. At the same time, the proposed strings for dialing are generated by a special algorithm that generates phonetic associated sequences of characters.

However, I think that this approach will be very difficult for beginners. Explanations on how to hold hands, which fingers to press, etc. are in the help of the program, and are described quite clearly, but it is not easy to switch from two-finger “poking” into the keyboard to typing with all 10 fingers. At the same time, it is very difficult to study which finger is responsible for what, looking only at the keyboard model. I think there is a high probability that the student will simply abandon this business until better times.

Speed Printing School

This keyboard trainer is designed for those who want to learn touch typing on the keyboard. The simulator has various interesting sections:
1. step-by-step study of the keyboard "muscle memory";
2. the game "falling letters" helps to distract from studying the keyboard and develop a reaction;
3. typing - skills development;
4. touch typing - imitation of work on a typewriter, enhances and consolidates the skill of touch typing;
5. sound dictation - just like in school, the voice dictates the story and you need to type without errors for speed.

There are other programs of this kind, but I do not think that they are fundamentally different or better than those that we have considered. This is quite enough.

Keyboard online simulators

Here we look at 2 good online resources that are dedicated to mastering touch typing.

Keyboard solo online

Training is provided free of charge. However, if you want, you can transfer money to ErgoSOLO LLC in the amount of 150 rubles (this is the same as the price of their SOLO on the keyboard program). The process and methodology of training does not differ from those presented in the program. Everything is very high quality and with care for the student. Here you can compete in the rating with other "online soloists", which, by the way, are already quite a few. Users who have paid for the course have an asterisk next to their name. In general, both the SOLO program on the keyboard and the online course are what a beginner needs. I think this is the best option.

All 10 (Recommended)

Another new project that promises to rid us of the habit of poking two fingers on the "clave". At the beginning you will have to take a test to check your typing speed. Then the exercises begin. Two courses are available - Russian and English. The training section provides detailed instructions and recommendations for completing assignments.

Clavogonki.ru

The basic rules of the game are simple. The game will select a random piece of text that you and your opponents must type exactly. As soon as possible. When you successfully type, your typewriter (it's always at the top of the list) moves forward. If a typo is made, you must correct it or there will be no promotion. Based on the results of the race, the winners will be determined and some parameters of the passage of the text will be shown - time, typing speed in characters per minute and the percentage of characters in which errors were made. The results of each race are stored in your personal statistics. For each text passed, you are awarded a number of points, depending on the length of the typed text.

Time Speed Keyboard Trainer

The main goal of the "Time Speed Keyboard Simulator" project is to enable the widest range of computer users to master typing (touch typing or ten-finger typing). We offer a series of touch typing training courses as well as typing speed development.

VerseQ online

This is an online version of the famous VerseQ keyboard trainer, but, unlike its offline counterpart, it allows you to study from anywhere in the world, participate in competitions, and share your progress with friends and acquaintances. You need the service if you want to quickly, easily and naturally learn touch typing. And if you're already a typing pro, then show off your skills to others!

Addition

To all of the above, you can add the following. Everyone who works at a computer, and especially if you have to type a lot of text, needs to buy an ergonomic keyboard. It is also called separate, because the keys for each hand are separated in it. In addition, the right and left blocks are at an angle to each other, which allows not to bend the hand at the wrist when placing the hands in the initial position of FYVA-OLJ. Working on such a keyboard, you will definitely get less tired, and this will increase the average typing speed and, accordingly, productivity.

I have already said that you should not hope for an easy "conquest" of the blind printing method. It's quite difficult, especially in the beginning. To pass, for example, SOLO on the keyboard completely, you will need to make a lot of effort and patience. In addition, you will need to allocate special time for this. However, you should not be afraid of this, everyone who wants to undoubtedly cope with this task. Good luck!

Keyboard trainer is a computer program or online service designed to teach or improve touch typing skills. Improving the touch typing skill is an increase in typing speed, a decrease in the number of typing errors.

Blind typing or blind ten-finger typing is a quick typing on the keyboard with all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard. The blind ten-finger method has been invented for over 120 years in America.. Using touch printing, you can achieve print speeds up to 1000 characters per minute! This is of course a super-record speed, but there is no limit to perfection!
Touch typing can be learned by anyone. For this, keyboard simulators have been developed to which our site is dedicated.

    Having become acquainted with the basics for teaching touch typing, we will consider the advantages and disadvantages of special computer programs designed to help students. Keyboard trainer- a program, service or flash game designed to assist in the practice of blind ten-finger typing. The variety of software offered, most of which is distributed free of charge, allows you to individually select the most suitable simulator with the ability to choose not only a level from a beginner to an advanced user, but also customize the program “for yourself” in the smallest details. Below we will give the characteristics and try to determine the pros and cons of the most popular keyboard trainers.

    Training simulators

    Keyboard solo (ergosolo.ru, nabiraem.ru)

    The keyboard solo is perhaps one of the most famous and popular keyboard trainers. The program is paid. Education, in addition to Russian and English, is also available in German. Of the undoubted advantages, we note the methodological support throughout the course (namely, the course, this is not just a simulator). These are recommendations on posture, on the correct positioning of the hands and fingers, a motivating introduction to each lesson with tips, letters from clients and anecdotes. You can turn this off if you wish. In general, the program has rich functionality. To add an element of entertainment to the training routine with Solo, the authors created a subsidiary site where you can check the typing speed and compete with other people in this indicator. Of the shortcomings (perhaps they are largely subjective), I would like to note a very long learning process. For people with a lack of patience and perseverance, it will not be easy to complete the course completely. It is often joked on the Internet that this program is not only a ten-finger touch typing training, but also willpower. The ban on habitual typing while working with the simulator also seems inconvenient, especially for people who work with typing huge texts every day, as well as the inability to move on to the next lesson until the previous one has been completed.

    Rating: 4.4/5

    "" - a new generation of the once famous keyboard simulator "KeyTO". The program is paid, with the possibility of a free demo version test. Modes - Russian, English, German layouts. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that a learning algorithm uncharacteristic for others is used. The developers promise that within an hour after the start of classes you will be able to type blindly, because "VerseQ" teaches not the gradual mastering of pairs of keys, but orientation on the entire keyboard at once. The advantage of the simulator is that letter combinations and phrases are not repeated during typing. They are also built on the principle of real syllables that exist in the Russian language, and not a simple set like "shgshgsh". The advantage is also that the program "remembers" the mistakes you made and more often gives out combinations with the same combinations for more training. The interface is neutral, not distracting. Of the minuses, only the lack of complete reference information on working with the program can be noted, which makes its development, to some extent, intuitive. Well, actually dissimilarity to other programs, although this is rather a plus.

    Rating: 4.4/5

    "" - a free keyboard simulator developed by A. Kazantsev. It has support for English, Russian and Ukrainian layouts. The interface is configured as user-friendly as possible. Step-by-step training: first, lessons on memorizing the location and a set of basic combinations, then phrases. The user himself chooses where to start and freely moves between modes and lessons. Sounding someone will seem funny, someone - ridiculous. This is a matter of taste, especially optionally customizable. Pros: convenience, ease of use of the simulator, understandability, built-in statistics, free of charge, the ability to customize the program for yourself (download background image and music). Of the minuses, the townsfolk point to the “tolerance” of “Stamina” for mistakes. The correction does not mean that such a mistake will not be made in the future, because "Solo" forces the printing of the entire line first, in contrast to Kazantsev's "good-natured" simulator.

    Grade: 4.5/5

    Typing Master

    "Typing Master" does not have Russian language support, but is included in our list as a great simulator for people who want to learn how to type in English, Italian, Spanish, German and French. The program is paid with the possibility of free testing. The training is structured, the choice of mode is possible: letter combinations, sentences, paragraphs. Of the advantages, we note the automatic repetition of the material if mistakes were made in it, detailed statistics with an analysis of the keys that cause the greatest difficulty. An introductory lesson was made in detail, where it is explained which finger to press and which key. Among the shortcomings, we note the rigor of the program: it is impossible to choose between lessons, which makes the simulator look like a textbook, because the previous material relies on what has already been completed.

    Rating: 4.2/5

    Exercise equipment for children
