Intellect Board

Intellect Board is a content management system. The site based on the Intellect Board consists of several sections of various types: a forum, a collection of articles, news, a file archive, a photo gallery, an IRC chat, etc. At the same time, the site has a unified user registration and authorization system, a unified search system for sections of any type, general design, as well as an integrated system for collecting statistics and managing the site, available through the Administration Center. In addition, Intellect Board 2 provides ample opportunities to differentiate access levels, in particular, it is possible to set access levels for each section that are necessary to perform various actions in this section, as well as set rights for users as the main access level, which will act by default, and access levels to individual sections.

History

Development of the Intellect Board 2 began in June 2004. The script was written completely "from scratch", however, when developing it, the experience of supporting the forum engine was taken into account [ http://www.openproj.ru/index.php?f=51 Russian Ikonboard] , as well as the wishes and suggestions expressed by the visitors of the United Open Project. On August 13, 2004, the first release of Intellect Board 2 was released. From that moment, testing of the Intellect Board in real conditions began on the website of the Joint Open Project, as well as on the websites of the Project participants and several dozen volunteers from among its regular visitors. Since the release of version 2.13, the Intellect Board has been separated from the Joint Open Project into a separate project. The project continued to develop, the number of users participating in testing grew. Significant optimization was also carried out in order to increase the efficiency of the forum with large volumes of its database. At the moment, the forum can successfully work with a database of more than 100 thousand messages with up to 40 users in 15 minutes (or 3500 unique visitors per day). With the release of version 2.15, the first stage of Intellect Board development was completed, the main task of which was to create , which is not inferior in functionality to such well-known engines as phpBB and Ikonboard, but has significantly greater opportunities for further development due to modularity and the ability to include sections of various types.

Intellect Board Partition Types

At the moment, the Intellect Board has the following types of sections:

* Forum - the main view of the section. In terms of functionality, it surpasses phpBB, Ikonboard 2.x and 3.x, vBulletin Board.
* News - displays news in blog mode, which can either be viewed sequentially or jump to a given date using the calendar.
* Articles - designed for placing large texts with automatic pagination.
* IRC Chat is a Java applet built into the website engine that allows users to enter an IRC chat (IRC channel and server are set by the administrator) directly from the browser, while the chat uses the same Network name as the forum, and also the same emoticons.
* Archive file - organization of downloading programs from external addresses. There is an option to automatically check if links are working.
* Presentation - a section containing static text, set by the section moderator. May contain subsections of arbitrary type.
* Encyclopedia - a section containing dictionary entries in alphabetical order, grouped by letter. There are additional tools for organizing cross-references.
* Photo gallery - a section that allows users to post photos with the ability to preview, while preview images are generated automatically.

Engaged in translation, support and development of Ikonboard 2.1.9 version, called "Russian Ikonboard". However, by the summer of 2003, it became clear that Ikonboard 2.x was hopelessly behind in its development and its further development was inefficient, and the idea arose to write my own forum engine that would be free from Ikonboard's shortcomings, but would not contain frills like a visual editor or a huge amount of JavaScript code, which by that time appeared in many other engines. The target user of this engine was defined as "an advanced user who does not need hints and is able to independently learn the necessary materials (for example, learn emoticon codes and BoardCode), for whom saving traffic is more important than ease of use."

The main concept of the new engine was the idea of a "forum-based site with additional sections". Work on the engine began in the fall of 2003. Initially, the engine was written in Perl without using a DBMS, but with the adoption of special measures to prevent performance degradation with a large number of files. In February 2004, the first alpha version and framework for it was written, called XAPPI (XXXX Pro's Advanced Perl Programming Interface).

The key ideas that were planned to be implemented in the new script were:
1) modular approach: the site consists of sections of various types (forum, articles, file-archive, photo), each type of section is responsible for its own module;
2) integration - a unified system for presenting users, message texts / articles / comments, uploaded files, from the user's point of view - a unified search and registration system;
3) the ability to search for any information (messages, topics, users) by a criterion of any complexity;
4) an extensive system of access rights, which would allow assigning the minimum necessary levels for performing certain actions at the level of individual users, as well as dynamically raising the levels with an increase in the number of messages;
5) an intelligent moderation system that allows the administrator / moderator to describe the rules on the basis of which the decision was made to deny / put a message on pre-moderation.
As the design names of the forum, options were considered Total Board (which was supposed to emphasize points 2, 3, 4 made it possible to feel full control over the forum) and Mega Board (which meant a forum with unlimited possibilities that arose with the help of points 1 and 4). However, in the end, because of points 3 and 5, the name Intellect Board was chosen, since it was assumed that it was the intellectual functions of complex search and moderation rules that would distinguish this engine from all others.

However, after a while it became clear that PHP has a number of advantages over Perl, in particular, PHP scripts are easier to install, it is much easier to detect and fix errors in PHP, PHP is available on almost all paid hosting plans, unlike perl. It also became clear that the use of a DBMS would make it possible to implement idea No. 3, a complex multi-criteria search, much more efficiently.
In this regard, in May 2004, the development of the Perl version of the Intellect Board was stopped, and on June 3, 2004, work began on the PHP version using the MySQL DBMS, which received the Intellect Board 2.00 number. The release of this version was supposed to be on August 10 (on this day the United Open Project turned three and a half years old), but due to an unexpected illness of the lead (and only at that time) developer 4X_Pro was pushed back a few days, and as a result, version 2.00 was released on August 13, 2004. This day is considered to be the beginning of the existence of the Intellect Board.

The main purpose of version 2.00 was to create a forum, with functionality roughly equal to Ikonboard 2.x (which it was planned to replace) and phpBB, so it had only two types of sections: a standard forum and a container. In reality, the concept of a "site based on a forum" was implemented only in version 2.10 (end of 2004), where the sections "Articles", "File-archive" and "News" appeared. Version 2.10 turned out to be very unstable due to a sharp increase in the amount of code, so soon (in February 2005) version 2.12 was released, the main purpose of which was to fix bugs.

In version 2.13, released in June 2005, two more types of sections were added: a photo gallery and an encyclopedia. In addition, in this version, a significant revision of all SQL queries was carried out due to the rejection of the concept "all statistics should be generated on the fly", which led to a catastrophic drop in performance with large amounts of data. Versions 2.14 (September 2005) and 2.15 (December 2005) added various minor features and fixed bugs.

The next major step in the development of the Intellect Board was version 2.18, released in June 2006. The main task of this version was to bring forum templates to HTML and CSS standards, as well as all SQL queries to the ANSI SQL standard, which made it possible to implement support for other DBMS, in particular PostgreSQL, planned back in 2.00. In addition, in the same version, the export of topics to RSS appeared for the first time and a lot of work was done to reduce the load on the database.

In July 2006, in order to improve the security of IntB, a hack competition was announced to find critical vulnerabilities in it.

In version 2.19, released on February 10, 2007 (to coincide with the sixth anniversary of the Joint Open Project), the most significant innovations were human-readable URLs (HURLs), fixing indexing by search engines, and the ability to temporarily save an edited message to a draft without reloading the page.

Version 2.20 (August 13, 2007, on the occasion of the third anniversary of the Intellect Board project) contained two fundamental new types of sections: the user's blog and personal photo gallery, which were created at the request of the user himself without the participation of the administrator (provided that the user had a sufficient level), and in which the user automatically received moderator rights. In addition, two fundamentally new features were added: an address book and an ignore list, as a result of which the forum acquired the basic functions of a social network.

It was originally planned that version 2.20 would be the last, but later it was decided to release version 2.22, which implemented the functionality required for one of the projects created by 4X_Pro: RSS import, topics for moderators only, and the mechanism for displaying messages in the topic has been completely rewritten. In addition, comments on articles, photos and files were placed on a separate page, and a number of minor improvements were made.

In the fall of 2006, it became clear that there were too many shortcomings in the Intellect Board 2.x series, the elimination of which is comparable in laboriousness to writing a new forum completely from scratch. In particular, these include the lack of separation of processing and data output (which creates problems with the output of HTTP headers in some situations), an inconvenient templating system, inefficient work with the database, and insufficiently high quality HTML code. In addition, the target audience itself has also changed due to the fact that, on the one hand, saving traffic is now becoming less and less relevant, on the other — 4X_Pro came to the conclusion that there is no such obvious opposition between user convenience and traffic savings, and sometimes it is more profitable to spend a hundred or two bytes writing JavaScript to check the correctness of filling out a form than to spend traffic sending an incorrectly completed form to the server. Besides, the "forum-based site" idea has also lost its relevance, gradually being replaced by the "CMS + forum" option (sometimes that's why Intellect Board 3.x is called Intellect CMS).

All this led to the idea of the need to write a new version from scratch. For some time in early 2007, attempts were made to combine the development of versions 2.x and 3.x, but this proved to be extremely inefficient, and therefore 4X_Pro made the following decision: to complete the planned improvements in version 2.22 and transfer the development of version 2.x to the user gram, who has been actively involved in the project since version 2.18, and then start working only on 3.x. This was done on December 26, 2007, right after version 2.22.

At present, the main concept of the development of Intellect Board 3.x looks like this: "a site as a tree structure of arbitrary objects with customizable properties". These objects may include static pages, articles, photos, chats, a page with a list of forum sections (similar to the top-level container in 2.x), etc. But unlike 2.x, where each section type had a strictly defined set of properties that were hard-coded in the topics table and an additional table for the corresponding section type, in 3.x a mechanism will be created that allows you to describe and dynamically change the property sets for each type objects (and perhaps even for individual objects), which creates almost unlimited possibilities for further expansion.

In addition, the following is planned for Intellect Board 3.x:
1) return to the concept of framework + engine in order to enable the creation of their projects based on IntB 3.x
2) revision of the approach to working with the database: if earlier the layer providing independence from the DBMS simply duplicated the call of the corresponding functions for working with the DBMS with a different prefix, now the work is carried out at the level of logical operations (for example, "get an array of data for a specific request " instead of "execute query", "extract the next row of data").
3) ensuring the independence of modules from each other and the style of the forum due to the fact that the template for display, language constants and settings are stored together with the module itself
4) strict separation of processing and data output (the so-called MVC pattern)
5) the ability to process data with different template engines (which, for example, will allow you to avoid code duplication if you need to display a topic and RSS for this topic, and also make it fundamentally possible to write a template engine that will use templates from other engines)
6) support for multi-site and multi-domain (i.e. work with several sites that are aliases from the point of view of hosting, but the engine gives them different content)
7) the possibility of self-diagnosis (i.e. the presence in each module of the procedure for checking the availability of the necessary access rights and PHP extensions on this hosting)
8) the ability to connect / disconnect modules "on the fly", which will allow you to update IntB 3.x at the level of modules, and not releases, as it was in 2.x
9) changing the approach to creating/updating the database structure: instead of describing the queries that need to be executed, the structure that needs to be obtained as a result is described, after which the database module compares it with the existing one and makes the necessary changes.
10) switch to UTF-8 encoding (with the ability to compress data if necessary)
11) a significant improvement in debugging tools, and in the future - automation of pre-release testing, which will avoid last minute bugs.
12) Paying Significantly More Attention to Developer Documentation

The first alpha version of Intellect Board 3.x is currently ready, however, subsequent development was suspended due to the need to complete 2.x

Intellect Board is a multifunctional content management system. With its help, you can create a web page with a file archive, forum, photo gallery, chat, news and a collection of articles. The solution has a wide functionality for assigning rights and access levels for participants and sections.

The service is useful for supporting sites of various types - from a community of airsoft fans and a personal account for communicating with friends in preparation for an event to an online store and customer support service of a large company.

The administrator is offered several sections that can be filled at your own discretion. "Presentation" is a static text containing links to go to sites, "Articles" - large texts with pagination, "News" - an analogue of a blog for information about current updates, and "Encyclopedia" - grouped data in the form of articles in alphabetically for easy searching. Options "Photo galleries" suggest placing images with the ability to show previews (pictures for previews are generated automatically). An IRC chat connection is available on the Java applet engine, while the chat can be entered directly from the browser, and in the process of communication the user is displayed under the nickname specified during registration on the forum. The service allows you to organize moderation settings, counting statistics, emoticons, indicating the rating of discussions.
