Step by step learning English on your own. English Lessons for Beginners: Free Videos for Home Lessons. Learning and improving grammar

Today, English is the universal means of communication. It opens up excellent career prospects. And you should not forget about access to a large information material. Thanks to the knowledge of the English language, you can watch your favorite TV shows at the time they are shown, and not wait until they are translated and adapted to the Russian language.

The advantages of knowing a second language, and as a rule it is English, are many and they can be listed for a very long time. Learning the language of Shakespeare is difficult even in England itself. But, everyone can comprehend the basics of a simple spoken language.

This does not require teachers and stuffy classrooms. Thanks to modern methods, self-study of English is an exciting and interesting activity. And not as difficult as it seems at first glance.

IMPORTANT: There are no people incapable of "languages". Yes, learning a foreign language can be easier for someone, and more difficult for someone. The main thing is to learn how to properly motivate yourself and find a course of study that is suitable for this.

Of course, if English is needed not for watching TV shows and reading your favorite blog, but for more serious tasks, then self-study is unlikely to help here. You will have to attend special, narrowly focused courses. But, you can reach them, starting with self-study.

Of course, learning any language from scratch, including English, is much easier by attending special courses and communicating with a "live" teacher.

However, such communication has a number of disadvantages:

  • these activities cost money.
  • need to fit in with the schedule.
  • Missing one class can leave you far behind.

Of course, many of the disadvantages of such training can be minimized by training with Skype. But, if it is not possible to carve out several tens of thousands of rubles from the budget for such an activity, then the only way to learn English is to study it on your own.

How to learn English from scratch?

  • In order to learn the language of JK Rowling from scratch, it is best to use a computer program or an audio course for beginners. With their help, you can understand the pronunciation of individual letters and words. By the way, the audio course in this has a lot of advantages.
  • With its help, training can be carried out without looking up from other things. It can be turned on in the car when commuting to work. If you prefer to travel by metro, then download this course to your smartphone and listen to it on the way
  • Of course, an audio course cannot replace the visual perception of the English language. But, there are special online trainings for this. Choose the course you need and start learning

IMPORTANT: From the first day of learning English, you need to try to speak it. If this is not done, then you will not be able to speak it even when the vocabulary and knowledge of grammar improve.

In order to learn English from scratch, first learn the alphabet, then move on to simple words - house, ball, girl, etc.

Choose a training where the study of new words is presented in the form of cards. The word in English should be written on it and what it means should be drawn. Scientists have long established the power of visual memory of information.

There is no need to try to remember a lot of words at once. At first, new information will come easily. Then, new words will be remembered easily, and old ones can be forgotten. In order to avoid this, it is necessary to pay more attention to the consolidation of new material. It is better to learn one new word a day, but reinforce all the old ones, than to learn 10 new words a day, but forget what has already been passed.

Where to start learning English?

  • Usually they start learning English from the alphabet. This has its own reason, you can understand how this or that letter sounds. But, it is not at all necessary to memorize its correct order. You can remember the pronunciation of letters without the alphabet. Moreover, they do not always sound like in this list of letters from “Hey to Zeta”
  • When you begin to understand the letters, try to read as many English texts as possible. It is not necessary to understand what is written there. Of course, interesting pictures in the text will make you want to understand what is written in it.
  • Then you can use online translators. But, do not paste all the text into them. Translate one word at a time. This will allow you to learn the language even better and remember a few words.

After you get comfortable in English, get a dictionary
  • Write down in it (just write down with a pen) all the unfamiliar words and phrases you encounter, and their translation
  • In parallel with maintaining your vocabulary, you need to start paying attention to grammar. English has a very complex system of tenses. There are irregular verbs and other difficulties in the way of learning this language. They all need a lot of time. But it pays off handsomely
  • Don't forget about pronunciation. Even a person who understands well what is written in English text will not always be able to make out what native speakers of this language are talking about. As a rule, they speak faster than teachers and teachers of language schools do.
  • In order to make it easier to understand English speech, watch movies, series and documentaries without translation. It's a great way to learn this interesting language

IMPORTANT: Try to spend at least 30 minutes in English every day. To do this, it is desirable to select certain hours. So our brain will be able to “tune in” by this time and the learning process will go easier in a few days.

How to learn English easily: a method of teaching English?

There are quite a few methods of learning this foreign language. The most popular are:

  • Method of Dmitry Petrov. A well-known polyglot in our country invented his own methodology and method of presenting information that fits in 16 lessons. Probably, many who were interested in learning English saw a series of TV shows in which Dmitry taught famous people. Thanks to this technique, you can quickly immerse yourself in the language environment and understand the grammar.
  • Method "16". Another technique that allows you to learn the basics of the English language in just 16 hours. It is based on learning dialogues, having mastered which you will be able to understand English.
  • Schechter's method. This system of learning English was developed by the famous Soviet linguist Igor Yurievich Shekhter. Unfortunately, this technique cannot be used for independent study of a foreign language. Moreover, a linguist teacher who will be allowed to teach using this method must himself undergo special training and pass an exam.
  • Dragunkin method. A popular method of teaching English in our country, which was developed by the famous philologist Alexander Dragunkin. He built his system on the so-called Russified transcription. In addition, he deduced the "51 rules" of English grammar. By learning which you can master this language

The above list of methods for learning English can be continued for a long time. The above systems are well suited for self-learning this language.

But, the best way to learn English is Frank method

English learners using this method are given two texts. First comes the adapted passage. Usually this is a literal translation, often provided with lexico-grammatical comments. After reading such a passage, the text in English is presented.

The technique is very good, interesting, but it has one significant disadvantage - it is more suitable for learning to read in English, and not to speak it.

How to quickly learn words in English?

  • There are many methods for memorizing words in a foreign language. The simplest of these is the traditional method. In the notebook you need to write down a few words in English (on the left side of the sheet) and their translation into Russian
  • It is advisable to always keep the notebook open and in a conspicuous place. Read the words and repeat from. Try to remember and go about your business. Refer to your notebook several times a day. After a while, you can write down a few more words. It is advisable to do this on another sheet. So, to leave it in a conspicuous place and at any moment to throw your eyes on the sheet with words
  • If you don't want a notebook, you can use the card method. To do this, cut sheets of cardboard into small cards. On the one hand, you need to write a word in English
  • And on the second, its translation into Russian. Turn the cards over with the English or Russian side facing you and try to translate the words that are written there. Unfold the card and check the correct answer

The card method is very popular.

On the Internet, you can find online services where such cards are presented in electronic form. Thanks to the popularity of this method, today it will not be difficult to buy ready-made cards. However, it is better to make them yourself. After all, writing down something on paper, we write it down in our subconscious.

Do not immediately try to remember a lot of words. In the long run, this is not very effective. Words learned quickly are usually forgotten quickly.

How to learn English verbs?

In principle, the above methods of memorizing English words are suitable for both nouns and verbs. But, among this category of English words there are so-called "irregular verbs". Like the correct ones, they mean:

  • Action - to speak (to speak), to come (to come)
  • Process - to sleep (sleep)
  • State - to be (to be), to know (to know), etc.

In school, such verbs are taught as follows. The students are given their list and the teacher asks them to learn as much as possible from it for the next lesson. This list does not have any structure that facilitates the study of such verbs. Therefore, few of us were able to master English at school.

Modern methods are very different from those by which foreign languages are taught at school.

How to quickly learn irregular English verbs?

  • As mentioned above, the “card method” can be used to memorize such verbs. But, unlike "simple" words, irregular verbs have three forms. What actually makes them wrong
  • To make cards with irregular verbs, you need to write the first form on one side, and the other two on the second side. Moreover, the first form does not need to be provided with a translation. And on the reverse side, you need to not only write two forms of the verb with a translation, but also provide a hint. For example, "alternating irregular vowel verbs in the root from to [e]"
  • The advantage of this method is that it is easy to use. Cards can be sorted out by hand, remembering first the main form, and then turn over and do the same with other forms. Such training can be carried out both at home and at work. Students can take such cards with them to the institute and repeat the verbs during the break.

Card example:

To make it easier to remember irregular verbs, they can be grouped by:

  • the method of formation of the second and third forms
  • repeatability or non-repetition of forms
  • root vowel alternation
  • sound similarities
  • spelling features

All other verbs need to be structured not alphabetically, as in school, but according to the above principles:

How to learn tenses in English

Another pitfall for anyone who wants to learn English is the times. By understanding their use, you can take a big step forward in learning this language.

In general, there are three tenses in English:

But, the difficulty lies in the fact that each time has types. The first type of such times is called Simple (simple). That is, there is:

Continuous (continuous, long) is the second type of tense.

The third kind is called Perfect. Thus, there are:

There is also another type of tense that combines all the previous Perfect Continuous (perfectly extended). Accordingly, the times can be:

IMPORTANT: In the specialized literature on the English language, Simple can be called Indefinite, and Continuous can be called Progressive. Don't be afraid, it's the same thing.

  • In order to use English tenses in sentences, you need to understand what action is happening? It is regular, it was yesterday, it is happening at the moment, etc. Simple tenses denote an action that occurs regularly, but its exact moment is not known. on Sundays - on Sundays (the specific time is not known)
  • If the sentence indicates a specific time (at the moment, from 4 to 6 o'clock, etc.), then Continuous is used - a long time. That is, time that denotes a specific moment or a specific period of time.
  • If the action is completed, Perfect is used. This time is applied when the result of the action is already known or it is possible to know exactly when it will end (but may still be going on)
  • The Perfect Continuous construction is used least often in English. It is used to designate a process whose action is not completed, but it needs to be said at the moment. For example, "In May it will be 6 months since I study English"
  • To study the tenses of the English language, you can also make tables, as for irregular verbs. Only instead of them enter linguistic formulas. You can use special literature. Better than multiple authors

Very well told about the times in Dmitry Petrov's method "Polyglot 16"

How to learn text in English?

  • If you need to learn a text in English in a short period of time, then you can use several methods for this purpose.
  • Before learning a text in a foreign language, you need to prepare. Namely, translate it. On the one hand, learning a text in English without knowing what is written there will not work. And on the other hand, while we are translating, something will already be written to the “subcortex”
  • During the translation of the text, you need to reread it several times. If you do this during the day, then before going to bed, repeat this procedure. We will sleep and the brain will work
  • In the morning, the text should be printed and hung in prominent places. Cooking, the text should be in the kitchen in a conspicuous place. Vacuuming in the living room, it should also be visible

The text in English is very well remembered if it is recorded on a voice recorder

Let's go to the store, headphones in your ears and listen, repeating every word to yourself. In the gym, instead of hard rock, you again need to listen to this text.

If the text is large, then it is better to break it into several small passages, and memorize each of them in turn. Do not be afraid, learning a text in English is not as difficult as it seems.

How to learn English in a dream?

At the end of the Soviet era, many “unique” methods of self-education poured into our country. One of them was to study foreign languages during sleep. Before going to bed, a cassette with lessons was put into the player, headphones were put on and the person fell asleep. They say that this method helped some.

Everyone knows that sleep is very useful. According to researchers involved in this problem, sleep can improve mental abilities.

And in general, a sleepy person “absorbs” information better.
  • But, for some reason, he absorbs it after sleep. English words from the player can only spoil the dream. So, worsen the perception of information the next day
  • But, sleep can really help. But, only if you take the time immediately before it to study English
  • After such a lesson, you can sleep, and the brain during this time will “process” the information and put it on the “shelves”. This method of learning foreign languages has proven to be effective and is used by many people.
  • And you can improve this technique if, immediately after sleep, you consolidate what was studied before bedtime.

Learning English: reviews

Katia. To learn a foreign language, you need to spend at least 30 minutes a day on it. Every day for half an hour. Even one missed day will have a very negative impact. I make sure to devote 30 minutes of English a day. Plus, if there is still time, then be sure to take a bonus.

Kirill. Now there are a lot of sites on the Internet where material is presented in a playful way. I am learning English through series. I watch serials in this language with Russian subtitles. I used to read subtitles all the time. Now I'm trying to understand myself.

Video: Polyglot in 16 hours. Lesson 1 from scratch with Petrov for beginners

According to statistics, English is the native language of more than 370 million people today. English, along with Chinese and Spanish, is consistently in the top three in terms of the number of speakers. In whatever country of the world we go, knowledge of spoken English will definitely not be superfluous. For employees of many facilities located in tourist areas, one of the main requirements for employment is at least a minimum knowledge of English. It is for all of the above reasons that the question of how to learn English on your own has been relevant for many years. And what programs and methods for teaching a foreign language have not been invented today. Many courses promise to achieve simply fantastic results in a short time. For beginners, programs are offered that supposedly allow you to speak English in 3 months no worse than Queen Elizabeth.

Of course, there are no miracles in teaching a foreign language, and you are unlikely to learn how to explain to an American how to get to the subway already in the first lesson. There are people who find English a little easier than others. But everyone has to make some effort in learning.

Learn English on your own or with a tutor - it's up to you, of course. Each person is individual. Some people find it difficult to force themselves to study at home. Such people, no matter whether it comes to sports or a foreign language, choose a mentor for themselves. Some of the students simply do not have the time or opportunity to attend English courses. But, thanks to the Internet, today foreign languages have become available to everyone.

I want to learn English language! Goals and motivation

Let's say you decide to learn English on your own. It starts with setting goals and finding motivation. Children at school are often reluctant to learn English words and get nervous when they are forced to memorize grammar, precisely because they do not understand why they need all this at all. But if schoolchildren can still be motivated by exams and grades, then with adults, unless, of course, we are talking about the faculty of linguistics, such a number is unlikely to work. We need to understand why we are learning a language. Then the process will go much faster and easier.

So, as a rule, an adult enrolls in a foreign language course or decides to learn English on his own for the following reasons:

· trips;
work in an international company;
moving to permanent residence in an English-speaking country.

The choice of teaching aids and the duration of training depend on the purpose for which you study a foreign language. For those who just go on a trip to an English-speaking country, sometimes it is enough to take a phrasebook with them. If you have time before the trip, you can buy an English tutorial. In reality, few people master such manuals from cover to cover, but it is quite possible to learn the most necessary colloquial phrases in everyday life on your own. Most of us travel in typical situations: going to museums and souvenir shops, buying food in a supermarket, walking the streets, ordering in a restaurant, taking a taxi and buying plane or train tickets. It is on all of the above topics that it is highly desirable to learn vocabulary before traveling abroad.

However, if you consider yourself an avid traveler and intend to travel half the world, then you need to learn English to at least B1 (Intermediate) level. This will help you make more new friends on your trips and broaden your horizons by communicating with foreigners.

In Russia, many decide to learn English on their own in order to find a better paying job or get a job in an international company. Knowledge of a foreign language is always a competitive advantage in the labor market. Moreover, today it is required to know English at the level of Upper-Intermediate, and even Advanced, from most specialists, not to mention top managers. If you intend to learn a foreign language for work, then you cannot do without a systematic approach. Some international companies invite English teachers to their offices so that employees can improve their language skills for free. If the organization does not help you with learning in any way, then you will have to learn English on your own. Of course, in order to reach the level of Upper-Intermediate or Advanced, it will take more than one year of work. Success here will largely depend on the effectiveness of the selected methodological materials.

To move for permanent residence in an English-speaking country, you will have to look for ways to fully immerse yourself in another culture. Fortunately, thanks to the Internet, today this can be done even while in Russia. Books in the original, films and TV programs in English - all this is available to Russian-speaking users. Youtube helps a lot, where there are a lot of interesting channels in English. Try to abandon the usual Russian bloggers in favor of foreign ones. Travel YouTube channels will allow you not only to improve your spoken vocabulary, but also to learn the opinion of the British and Americans about our country. It is absolutely not necessary for a child to start learning English in advance. Having moved to another country for permanent residence, in any case, he will go to school, find himself in an unusual social environment and be able to adapt to the language. But an adult in a new place may not have time to learn English. After all, when you move, you will have to solve many everyday issues: from finding housing and work to placing a child in school and purchasing necessary household items. And without a language, this will be extremely difficult to do.

How to learn English on your own? 4 steps

So, you have decided on your motivation and decided to learn English on your own. What are your next steps? If you have already studied English before (maybe at school or college), and now you intend to continue, then first you should take a test in order to determine the level of proficiency. You can do it right on our website:

Perhaps your knowledge is enough to start Intermediate (that is, 3 steps). If you feel that you can barely remember the alphabet, then it is better to start with the first level of Beginner. In this case, it is useful to refer to . It offers 5 levels of learning with video tutorials, accessible grammar explanations, lots of interactive exercises and quizzes to reinforce what you've learned.

If you think that one online course will not be enough for you, or you just prefer to follow your own learning system, then you need to be ready for the following 4 steps, which serve as the answer to the question of how to learn English yourself.

Step 1. Search for manuals and books

In a good way, to start learning English you will need 4 textbooks:

· Universal modern manual for beginners or continuing;
· Grammar textbook;
· A guide to pronunciation;
· Benefits with exercises to increase vocabulary.

Quite a lot, right? Nevertheless, having spent a considerable amount of money on educational literature, it is not a fact that you will soon begin to speak English. First, most of the manuals are designed for group work. In such textbooks, almost half of the tasks involve the construction of dialogues and even entire conversations between students. Secondly, many modern manuals for learning English do not contain a single word in Russian: in order to start the exercise itself, you first have to translate the tasks. With self-study, this can create some difficulties. And, finally, it has long been proven that living English speech is usually far from those often too formalized phrases that textbooks offer us.

Remember that it is better not to take manuals written more than 20 years ago. Like any language, English is dynamically changing, undergoing constant change. In old textbooks, you simply will not find many topics that have become relevant only recently and have appeared due to the active development of technology.

In the modern world, many ardent supporters of progress generally avoid print publications, preferring e-books to them. For such people, when learning English, online courses will be an excellent alternative to standard textbooks. However, among English learners there are those who are more comfortable working with printed manuals, where you can take your notes. Such students, in addition to textbooks, should also pay attention to adapted fiction. Books in the original help to enrich vocabulary and broaden one's horizons. And learning English from works of literature with a famously twisted plot is much more exciting than from textbooks with dry rules.

Step 2. Choosing a time and place for classes

You can learn English on your own only with total discipline. This is the case where consistency is needed to achieve a good result. First, decide on a place to practice. If you are afraid that household members will interfere with the process, then you can try to study in the office after the end of the working day. Ideally, English should be given 20-30 minutes daily. If this is difficult for you, then you can do at least 2-3 times a week. But in this case, the duration of the lesson should be at least an hour.

Step 3. Communicating with native speakers and English speakers

Any person, studying English, sooner or later faces a psychological barrier. Many who study a foreign language have probably noticed that when it comes to communicating with a native speaker, no matter how savvy we are in vocabulary and grammar, there is a real stupor. The speaker begins to forget the words, to worry and, as a result, cannot build an elementary phrase. You can get rid of this psychological barrier only through communication. Ask those around you who speak the language to speak to you in English as much as possible. It is very useful to make friends among carriers. Daily correspondence in chats and social networks with acquaintances from the USA or the UK will help you expand your vocabulary and adapt to colloquial speech. Those who want to learn how to speak fluently should also try to find an expat from an English-speaking country in Russia. Such a person can be offered a kind of barter. He will help you with English, and you will help him with Russian.

Step 4. Good Habits

If you are puzzled over the question of how to quickly learn English yourself, then you will have to be patient and develop some good habits. In addition to regular classes, you need to learn to practice speaking skills whenever possible. Make it a rule to learn 10-15 new words every day. Some are helped by plates with pictures. When you learn new words, don't forget to practice their pronunciation. It is useful to listen to podcasts in English while traveling by subway or car. Audio recordings can be found, for example, on our website. Most of the podcasts here are accompanied by simultaneous subtitles in Russian and English. You can choose audio based on your own interests and language level.

English-language radio stations also help to get used to English speech. To make the process of learning a foreign language easier, make the language part of your leisure and recreation. Try watching your favorite series and American movies in English. Do you know why in some small countries in Europe people generally have a high level of English? Because Hollywood films and television series are not dubbed, but are shown with subtitles. Constantly hearing the original speech from the screen, people quickly learn English.

How to learn English from movies and TV shows?

Films and series in English help to develop the student's ability to perceive foreign speech by ear. It's no secret that even perfect reading skills and a good knowledge of grammar do not guarantee that you will be able to immediately support a conversation started by the British or Americans. It is believed that a person who is not accustomed to English speech absorbs a very tiny percentage of the information communicated orally. Even with an excellent vocabulary, the student picks out only individual words from the flow of speech. Movies and series without translation or with subtitles help to solve this problem.

Series on everyday and everyday topics allow you to feel the live speech of New York, London, Los Angeles. When you start watching such shows, you will immediately understand why many Americans and Britons consider our English to be too bookish.

You will be able to learn English on your own if you frequently watch programs and television shows released in the US or UK. First, it is recommended to watch TV shows with Russian subtitles. After that, you can already switch to English subtitles or completely refuse them. At first, watching programs and films in English will seem difficult. But it is absolutely not necessary to go into the dictionary every time an unfamiliar word is encountered. Learn to guess the meaning of the phrase, focusing on what is happening on the screen.

Still doubting that watching videos in the original language is not difficult? In this case, try to "collect" video puzzles on our website. The essence of this method is simple. First you need to watch any video you like from the catalog (it can be an excerpt from a movie or a music video). For convenience, visual materials are accompanied by subtitles. Further, from the words mixed in a chaotic order, it is necessary to compose the phrases heard in the video in English. Video puzzles in an easy game form help develop the habit of hearing foreign speech and understanding unfamiliar words, focusing on the context.

How can you learn English online?

The Internet today is the main assistant of those who do not know how to quickly learn English. It is recommended to check the pronunciation of each new word using online dictionaries. Youtube will also be useful, where, depending on your interests, you can subscribe to various English-language channels.

To be able to learn English no matter where you are, install learning mobile apps. And do not forget about Skype, where there will always be both teachers giving online foreign language lessons and just interlocutors.

Learn English on your own, or organize personal time

Of course, many of us are concerned about the question of how to learn English without the help of a tutor. Self-study of a foreign language requires self-discipline and conscience. You do not need to look for excuses for your non-performance every time for the teacher. To deceive yourself by coming up with reasons why you failed to learn new words or work out at the right time is completely unprofitable and pointless. Try to create some daily norms for yourself. For example, 10 new words to memorize, 10 pages of an English book, or watching one short episode of an American TV series. At first, you will most likely have to force yourself to comply with these norms. But gradually, daily English lessons will become a habit, and each new achievement will motivate you to take further steps. If you do not approach the study of English as boring cramming and the wilds of theory, but switch to live communication, watching interesting programs, reading books, online tests and word memory simulators, then English will easily become part of your daily life and an exciting hobby.

For some, English (and sometimes not only English) is given so easily, as if a person grew up in an English-speaking environment. But most people, unfortunately, have to work hard to master at least its basics. Is it possible to learn a language quickly and without teachers?

Can! And 50% of success is your sincere desire.

Rules for effectively learning English from scratch at home - how to quickly master the language?

A new language is not only an expansion of our consciousness and horizons, it is also a huge benefit in life. Moreover, English, as you know, is considered an international language.

So, where to start learning, and how to master the language without resorting to outside help?

  • Decide on a goal. Why do you need a 2nd language? To pass an international exam, to communicate with residents of another state, to get a new job in another country, or just “for yourself”? Based on the intentions, it is already worth choosing a methodology.
  • Let's start with the basics! It is impossible to learn a language without knowing the basics. First of all - the alphabet and grammar, as well as the rules of reading. The usual self-instruction manual will help you with this.
  • After obtaining stable initial knowledge, you can proceed to the choice of contact study option. For example, Skype lessons, a remote course option, or a school with the possibility of distance learning. Having a partner is the key to success.
  • After choosing a course of study, be sure to pay attention to fiction. It is recommended to use adapted texts at first, and later, when gaining experience, you can switch to full-fledged books. It is important to master (qualitatively) the technique of speed reading. Read detective stories and novels. Let the books not be literary masterpieces, the main thing is that your vocabulary expands. Do not forget to write out and by all means memorize vocabulary unfamiliar to you.
  • Refer to films, various programs and famous series in the language of your choice for learning. At first, it will be difficult to understand anything, but over time, your ear will get used to foreign speech, and you will even begin to understand it. You can devote 30 minutes a day to such educational viewing, or you can watch only foreign TV programs at all.
  • Always speak your chosen language : at home, commenting on their actions; communicating with friends and family members, etc. Let family members support you in your endeavor - this way the process will go faster. Constant practice is extremely important.
  • Tightly study the language at least three times a week for 1-2 hours. Or every day for 30-60 minutes. Reinforce your practice - the effort should not go to waste.
  • Constantly work on your speaking skills. You need to read simple articles (any), listen to the news in the language, write short texts, train your English speech skills.

  • We read foreign press, books, leaf through magazines.
  • We watch films without translation.

The ideal option is to go abroad. Not for a visit, not for a month or two, but for a year or two, so that the effect of learning the language is maximum.

Without leaving reading, we take up a pen and write on our own

Describe anything you like - events, news, your actions.

Ideally, if you start to conduct your own, using not Russian, but exclusively English.

It is important to learn not only to write correctly, but also to express thoughts correctly.

Complex forms - the next stage

After 8-9 months of hard training, you will read and write in English without difficulty. You can also easily translate texts.

From this point on, it makes sense to move on to more complex forms that were not previously used. For example, "Need have" or "I wish I knew".

Practice, practice, practice - always and everywhere

By the way, it is not so difficult to find a foreigner to practice in our domestic social networks. Many foreigners strive to get closer to Russian speech and register on our sites: you can help each other.

After a year, your knowledge will reach a sufficient level to continue learning the language somewhere in rainy London, completely immersed in the culture of native speakers.

  • Learn the language in 1st person. Memorizing phrases from phrase books automatically models specific situations in your mind: by trying on each phrase for yourself, you avoid the impersonality of memorized texts, which will later help you get used to the text and memorize it more effectively. For each topic in the phrasebook - 2-3 days. Learn sequentially, be sure to memorize all the accompanying words.
  • According to experts, the ideal learning formula is 30 words a day. Moreover, 5 of them must necessarily be verbs. It is recommended to take words every day for a new letter of the alphabet. After you "run" the entire alphabet "in a circle", you can start again with "A". The effectiveness of the method lies in the creation of a good tradition (rule), which gradually becomes a habit and is transformed further into a system. Skipping days and arranging weekends is prohibited.
  • We translate and learn songs. Another good habit you should get yourself into. The main advantage of the method is excellent pronunciation, purity of the style of the language, getting used to the style of presentation. Write a list of your favorite songs and start from there.
  • Listen unconsciously. You do not need to catch every sound of the announcer - catch the general tone, try to immediately embrace the immensity, do not delve into the details.
  • Take advantage of skype training. There are many teachers on the network who want to work in their field. Find the best and agree on cooperation.

How do you study English? Share your tips and experiences in the comments below!

There are a lot of ways to learn English in 5 minutes, in a day, a week or even a month on the Internet, but you should immediately learn one rule: to get something, you have to give something.

In our case, to learn English to a certain level, you will need to give your time and effort. This applies not only to English, but also to other languages - you need to learn daily and the sooner you want to progress, the more time per day you need to devote.

English levels

We concretize the meaning of the word "learn" the language. There are 6 levels of language proficiency:

A1(Beginner, Elementary). Basic level, knowledge of several common phrases, words.

A2 (Pre-Intermediate). Slightly above base. You can tell about yourself in a few sentences (having previously written and learned the text), read simple (very simple) texts, understand individual phrases and words by ear.

B1 (intermediate). Intermediate level, you can read children's literature in English, talk on simple everyday topics, correspond in social networks. networks.

B2 (Upper Intermediate). The level is above average. You can talk on various topics with native speakers, read different literature in English, more or less well explain your thoughts without preparation.

C1 (Advanced). Advanced level. Here you can already properly load the average American with oral speech, understand their mentality, know how to explain your thoughts well, convince, and joke appropriately.

C2 (Proficiency). The coolest level. Ownership at the level of Native Speaker. You understand any oral or written speech, you can defend your doctoral dissertation. As a rule, you know English even better than your native language.

In addition to your time, you can also spend your money, in some cases, even very considerable. The best way to learn any language is to go to a country where that language is spoken and live there for at least half a year in complete isolation from your native language. That's the whole point, you need to maximize the time spent with the language being studied and minimize the time spent with the native language. Read, write, speak and think in the target language. It's not easy, but it's fun 🙂

You should not treat learning English like a job or homework, or anything else that other people or circumstances force you to do. You must want to learn English yourself.

For money, you can go to another country, enroll in courses or hire a tutor - this will speed up your progress. But the essence remains the same: you still have to do it yourself at home. Without this, no tutors and courses will help you much. No one will learn English for you. Tutors and courses will only point you in the right direction. From this it turns out that with a great desire, English can be learned by yourself and without significant financial investments.

5 ways to learn English

I will tell you about the methods that I use myself and which really help in learning English.

Method number 1: Watch movies in the original (English) dubbing with subtitles. Write out all unfamiliar words and phrases in a separate notebook and repeat them constantly. Thus, every day you will learn new words, listen to "live" speech, memorize the structure of sentences, understand slang and just have a good time. This method with daily workouts can very soon become your pleasant habit. This is the most effective way to learn English and it helped me get to Upper-Intermediate. I wrote more about this method.

Method number 2: Read books in English. Something from modern literature is better, because if you take old books or the same classics, then they will have a lot of “dead” words that are now not used either in writing or in communication. Choose artistic modern bestsellers or something interesting for you. For example, programmers can read books about programming.

Method #3: Listen to audiobooks and podcasts. Podcasts are educational videos or audio recordings. There are also performance podcasts that you can both listen to and watch, podcasts from TED or BBC. Thus, you can not only learn English, but also develop intellectually and even professionally. Two in one.

Method number 4: Programs and applications. There are special applications for Android or iOS that are designed for learning English. Among them are very popular Duolingo and LinguaLeo. Among the more serious programs, it is worth highlighting Rosetta Stone(paid).

Method #5: Skype with Native Speakers. Here, the emphasis should not be on pressing the keyboard of a laptop or computer, but on a live conversation using a webcam and a microphone with Native Speaker. There are special social networks for people who want to learn another language. There you can find Native Speakers of many languages, chat with them, exchange Skype. During regular communication with Native Speaker, you learn how to speak correctly, understand spoken language, build sentences, etc. Such communication on an ongoing basis can be a very good alternative to traveling to another country. And it's completely free. More about social networks for learning English I wrote.

I deliberately left communication with Native Speakers in the end, as I would not recommend it for beginners. At a basic level of language proficiency, you will not be able to communicate and learn normally in communication, a live conversation can end in 2 minutes due to the lack of your vocabulary, elementary understanding of the language and just lowing during these 2 minutes.

Start with the first way. After learning the words, listening and watching the modern Anglo-American speech, you can already connect applications ( method number 4). Then you can watch / listen to podcasts and read books. And only then is it worth looking for an interlocutor among Native Speakers.

Live informative communication is at the highest level of language proficiency, and in order to participate in a dialogue, you already need to know the language at least above the elementary, and better, above the average level. Try, experiment.

Test

Here is another cool site where you can test your English vocabulary -

The world has long set an important criterion for every person - the need to know English at a high level. For reading books and newspapers, talking with people and, of course, work. This is a plus in the resume and a must for any profession.

Contrary to the opinion of many people, you can learn English on your own and do it from scratch. What should you start with?

The benefits of knowing foreign languages

Knowledge of foreign languages opens up a huge world of opportunities for a person. Having learned English, there are more chances to find a well-paid job. This is especially true for residents of megacities, where specialists with knowledge of a foreign language are needed in every field.

This is mainly due to the fact that foreign companies often operate in big cities.

The more often a person uses a foreign language in everyday communication, the faster he will get used to a new way of forming thoughts. It teaches creativity, allows you to think and act more broadly.

The main reasons that are the motivation to learn English include:

  1. The opportunity to show the environment knowledge of a foreign language. This will show your education and success, in addition, increase self-esteem.
  2. A foreign language will come in handy at the most inopportune moment for example, when you receive an unexpected promotion or travel abroad, where most people do not speak their usual language.
  3. The spheres of work and communication are expanding because most people speak English.
  4. Learning a foreign language in adulthood allows a person to train the brain, keep memory in good shape, slow down many age-related changes;
  5. Today there are "family" classes that can help bring parents and children together;
  6. If one parent is fluent in English, it can help kids learning;
  7. Corporate English Learning allows you to rally the team;
  8. Reading literature in the original language. The translation does not convey the beauty of foreign prose or poetry;
  9. Finally, it is an expansion of horizons, increasing self-esteem, social status, level of education of a person.

Is it possible to learn English at home?

The more popular English language training becomes, the more methods and courses appear that are easy to take at home. The main effective method of how to learn English should be aimed not only at gaining knowledge, but also at the pleasure that a person will feel from the process.

One desire is not enough - a person must have motivation, determination to learn a new language.

Everything a person needs to learn English fits into three points:

  • Desire and intention to know the language, speak and read it;
  • Effective teaching methodology;
  • Time for classes, and even 10 minutes of daily effort is enough.

There are several common opinions that are stereotypes, they undermine self-confidence and interfere with learning a new language:

  • English is a difficult language that cannot be learned on your own;
  • Training must take place with a tutor or group;
  • Learning means cramming.

This is not true. Realizing that such thoughts are wrong, proceed to the full study of the language. In fact, learning English at home is easy, and most importantly - interesting and fun.

Understand the most important thing - for learning to be effective, it is necessary to “introduce” English into all areas of life.

A few simple examples:

  • Study books, newspapers and articles in English. At first, much will not be clear, you will check every word in the dictionary, this will be an excellent workout.
  • The basics of grammar can be learned from any textbook;
  • Watch movies, series or videos in the original. You can just turn on subtitles, then you will not notice how English words and phrases are easy to remember.
  • Speak English. Aloud, with friends, relatives, acquaintances in social networks. Let there be a lot of mistakes at first - you can’t learn without them. Over time, the skill will develop better and better.

When and how is it better to start learning English?

The next well-known stereotype says that only children can learn English from scratch. It is not true. Such thinking makes adults ashamed of ignorance, they do not want to learn the elementary rules of grammar, and then completely abandon this idea.

Remember, there is no shame in learning anything. At ten, eighteen, twenty or fifty. Your grandmother can learn English if she really wants to. There are examples when 80-year-old pensioners began to learn foreign languages, achieved successes that schoolchildren could not dream of.

To start learning English, you need to choose a learning method. There are enough options: group classes, individual lessons with a tutor or self-study. The most convenient way is a teacher - a good tutor will clearly explain how to remember the basics of the language, put the grammar rules in order.

If there is no opportunity or desire to work with a tutor, it's okay. There are some tips to help you learn English on your own.

Guide: how to start learning English from scratch on your own?

  1. Start with reading rules. It is impossible to learn a foreign language without knowing how it is read. Download a table with reading rules, but don't try to memorize it right away - it's better to try reading several texts, referring to the table. So, complex rules will be remembered faster. Some words are read differently than they are written, and the sound of others is simply forgotten. Practicing reading is helpful.
  2. Build vocabulary from day one. This is the most interesting part of learning a language. Knowing the words, you can speak, translate and read. It's actually very easy to remember. Use pictures, write down flashcards, or make vocabulary sheets. Remember which words are most often used in everyday speech, and keep a dictionary with you - electronic or paper.
  3. Remember the rules of pronunciation. Even if you have been studying English for several months, do not forget to check the transcription of words. Some words are read differently than they are written, and the sound of others is simply forgotten.
  4. Learn grammar. Grammar is an important part of learning a foreign language. Violation of grammatical rules makes it possible that the interlocutor will not understand you, and this is unacceptable when writing professional texts. You can learn the rules from the textbook. The first book in a series of Grammarway manuals translated into Russian will help in learning.
  5. Listen to podcasts daily. From the beginning of learning English, get used to the sound of foreign speech. This allows you to memorize words faster, trains thinking and learns better than textbooks. It is enough to start with simple podcasts of your level that are five, ten or thirty minutes long. Audio recordings with translation are available on the Internet.
  6. Watch news in English. News is an accessible "textbook". For the first level of learning English, news texts or videos are easy because they are short, concise, contain words that are easy to remember and learn. Also try to repeat phrases from the news out loud.
  7. Read texts. Learning is impossible without reading. It helps to activate visual memory, since words and phrases are often repeated in texts, which increases the chances of memorizing complex phrases. Thanks to the texts, you can understand how sentences are built, which words are most often used by native speakers. Texts are easy to find on the Internet or textbooks - for example, New English File Elementary.
  8. Use simple applications. Learning English is easier than ever. It is enough to use a smartphone. Applications are "tutorials" that you can use at any time. For example, Lingualeo will teach you new words, and language structure is easier to understand with Duolingo. The latter is useful for remembering grammar rules.
  9. Practice online. It is enough to search the Internet for how to start learning English, the search engine will show thousands of options. Sites that work on the principle of “cards” for learning words, collections of grammar rules, test services. Bookmark resources, try to look there once or twice a day, practicing English.

How to learn the English alphabet?

The English alphabet is the next step in learning the language.

To get to know him, you need to know the following:

  • The name of the letters. For example, the letter C is called "si", and the letter B is called "bi". Knowledge will help not to get into trouble when communicating or dictating words by letter.
  • Designation of letters. Large and small letters are not always similar to each other (J and j, Q and q), you need to learn the difference in advance.

The alphabet is necessary to get acquainted with the rules of reading. In English, there are many exceptions, words are rarely read the way they are written. For correct pronunciation, you need to learn transcription. Near each letter, it is better to write how it is pronounced, and then repeat the material daily.

How to learn English words and phrases?

Vocabulary is the foundation of a language. If you learn all the grammar rules, learn how to read phrases correctly, without knowing the vocabulary, the level of the language will not advance.

A few tips on how to effectively and quickly memorize new words:

  1. Use the association method. Take a blank sheet of paper, write in the center the word you want to remember. Now draw lines to the sides, write associations with this word in English at the ends. You can draw pictures, use sentences, diagrams. Anything to help memorize the word. The exercise will take a couple of minutes and will allow you to connect new concepts in your head.
  2. Memorize phrases. It is useful to memorize the words that are next to the new word. Phrases can be used in conversation, and common expressions are useful in communication or reading texts.
  3. Use pictures and images. To remember the knowledge of a compound word, draw a picture. Quality does not matter - it can be a complete composition or scheme. The main thing is a process that will help you remember the word, a picture will immediately pop up in your head.
  4. Come up with stories. Over time, new words will appear more, it will become more difficult to remember. To quickly learn new words, it is better to make up a story, say it out loud, using new words that you have already learned.
  5. Remember opposites. Antonyms are useful for memorization. Happy or unhappy, evil or kind - when the first word pops up in your head, the opposite will follow. The process of replenishment of the word stock will go much faster.
  6. Understand the word. When an unfamiliar word is found in the text, you should not run for a dictionary or “fill in” a query in a search engine. Try to decompose the word into components, guess with the help of the root what it means. Then check with a dictionary.
  7. Give yourself time. A new word will not be remembered immediately. The word must be used, remembered and constantly checked. Over time, new words will become regular guests in the vocabulary.

How to learn spoken English?

A difficult step in teaching English is the transition to communication. Students are faced with a problem - they understand the language, freely read texts and listen to the news, but they cannot say anything on their own. The reason is fear. People are afraid to make a mistake, get lost in vocabulary, forget grammar rules.

First, there is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. Gradually, errors from speech will begin to disappear, sentences themselves will be built in the correct form. Listen to the same phrases hundreds and thousands of times in order to freely use words in a conversation. Start with simple phrases, repeating after the speaker in the audio material, then add more complex sentences.

Books will help. Read aloud to get used to foreign speech. Retell texts from memory. The main thing is to practice regularly. Experts recommend listening to English speech at the beginning of training, after six months of training add more reading. This will help form a new way of thinking with which speech will develop. You will not notice how soon you will be thinking in English.

Learn English grammar for beginners

Classes can be customized for yourself, study at a convenient time, build classes to your liking. Some people like to repeat vocabulary in the morning, while others prefer reading textbooks at night. Visuals will love to immerse themselves in the videos.
  3. Individual lessons with a teacher. One of the most effective ways to learn. You will be given the attention of a tutor who will build an individual program and understand what pace of learning will be optimal. The teacher will pay attention to weaknesses, help to cope with complex grammatical rules. The teacher will offer a variety of tasks, teach you how to speak and help learn words. It’s not scary to make a mistake, and constant classes will not allow you to skip or miss lessons. Thanks to the development of technology, students study at home - via Skype. A mentor will help you focus on the right knowledge and even help you prepare for an interview in a foreign language.

How to organize effective English lessons on your own?

Self-study in English has advantages, but it also has disadvantages. A beginner does not understand well how to effectively organize classes, where to start, what aids to use. And most importantly, he is afraid to make a mistake, to start wrong.

How to organize lessons for self-study of English:

  1. Choose study guides. When learning English from scratch, you won’t be able to immediately take on foreign textbooks; arm yourself with publications created by Russian-speaking professionals. Try studying from the books of Bonk or Golitsinsky, then gradually move on to British textbooks. Among them, for the first time, the initial levels of Language in Use or Hotline are suitable. Do not sit too long on domestic publications, as foreign ones will bring much more benefit. Browse the tutorials and choose those that present complex rules with tables, pictures, and colorful explanations.
  2. Stock up on study materials. H To learn English, one textbook is not enough. A grammar book, a publication aimed at expanding vocabulary, will come in handy. Another textbook will help with pronunciation (often publications come with accompanying audio material). A dictionary containing the transcription is required.
  3. Convenience of practice. Before starting the next lesson, look around. You should be surrounded by comfort, no irritants, distracting details. This will help you focus on the lesson and remember the information better.
  4. Lesson time. Experts recommend studying English at about the same time. For people who wake up easily in the morning, it is advisable to set the time for lessons in the morning. Owls, on the other hand, find the material easier if they devote their evenings to studying. The main thing is to study every day. The lesson can last about an hour, ten minutes is enough on busy days. Remember, regularity is the key to knowledge.
  5. Video lessons. With self-study, video tutorials will help to supplement the material from books or manuals. This will allow you to quickly assimilate information, listen to foreign speech and distract from the endless texts of textbooks.
  6. Immersion in language. A key part of learning that is often underestimated by beginners. Immersion in English will help increase the effectiveness of classes, speed up the replenishment of vocabulary. Try to use only English phrases and words all day long, give up the Russian language for a while. In the second half of the 20th century, this teaching method was popular. Groups of people were placed in sanatoriums for ten days, where the students spoke to each other and the teacher exclusively in a foreign language. They acted out skits and created situations to fill up the vocabulary.
  7. Reading. It is important to read a lot at the beginning of learning. First the rules, then the examples, and finally the simple texts. With the help of this, the construction of sentences, numerous phrases and words are easily remembered. Thanks to visual perception, information is absorbed quickly and easily. Try to read at least one light text a day.
  8. Listening. For beginners, trying to understand the text that the announcer is reading seems impossibly difficult. However, this is a workout that will soon bring results. Audio recordings allow you to quickly remember how a word or phrase is read and pronounced, and the simultaneous perception of the text through reading and hearing speeds up learning. Try closing the textbook, turning on the audio recording, and listening carefully to it a couple of times. You will notice how you begin to snatch out familiar words and listen to foreign speech. Films with subtitles will also help here, when English is perceived by ear, and the look immediately translates into Russian. Watch your favorite movie in which the plot is already known in the original and try to repeat the dialogues of the characters.

How to teach English to a child?

Children learn English easier and faster than adults, because flexible memory helps them remember the material and apply it in all areas of life.

Several ways to effectively teach a child a foreign language:

How to learn text in English: ways and methods

To learn a text written in English, it is not necessary to use the "cramming" method.

There are several simple ways to make the process more efficient and interesting:

  1. Read the text carefully before you start teaching. You should not stretch the process for several days, on average, about an hour is enough for a task, depending on the volume.
  2. Divide text into logical parts. Almost no one can instantly remember a large text in a foreign language, especially a beginner in this matter. Even in your native language, this is impossible. Break the text into several smaller pieces that are much easier to remember.
  3. Organize the process. Number each paragraph so that the brain associates parts of the text with numbers - it has been scientifically proven that numbers are easier to remember. Additionally, the perception of the text is simplified.
  4. Read the text aloud. The main assistants will be visual and auditory memory. Get rid of external stimuli, find a quiet place where you can focus on the lesson. Now place the text in front of you, read it aloud - slowly, insinuatingly, carefully. Don't skip difficult words if you don't know how to read them correctly. It is better to spend time and look in the dictionary to find out the transcription.
  5. When you have read two or three small sections, repeat the previous ones without looking at the text. Do not be afraid to make a mistake or forget - you can always peep, but you need to train your memory. As a result, a logical sequence will appear in the head, thanks to which the necessary parts of the text will appear in the head.

Where can I find free tutorials and materials?
