Every year in December in Britain people celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. That is why we call this time of year “Christmas” - we celebrate the “Mass” (the birth). Christmas is a wonderful time, bringing families and friends together.. Most people are on holiday in Britain and stay at home with them family on Christmas day What do we celebrate?

People celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December in Great Britain and on the 7th of January in Russia

The symbols of Christmas. Christmas Tree Christmas tree The tradition to decorate the Christmas tree appeared in Germany. English Queen Victoria liked the idea to decorate a fir tree, and in the 19th century this tradition came to Britain. Now all British family decorate the tree with toys, ball, sweets. And this tradition became popular in many countries.

Decoration of the House Many British families live in the houses, so when Christmas comes they beautifully decorate their houses and flats.

(Stocking) Stocking for gifts In Great Britain children believe, that Santa Claus put presents in the stockings.

Candle (Candle) Candle is one of the Christmas traditions. People light candles when all family get together for Christmas dinner.

Holly. Holly is the flower of the Christmas season. People in Britain like to decorate their houses with this green plant.

Carols. Christmas songs (chorales) Carols are special Christmas songs. It is very important tradition in Britain. People sing them in churches and in the streets.

Candy cane Christmas Candy Parents give children candy canes for Christmas. The candy is made as letter J, because the name Jesus starts with this letter.

Ginger Cookies Ginger cookies are traditional food for Christmas. Children put these cookies on the fireplace for Santa Claus.

Santa Claus or Father Christmas, is the legendary figure who brings presents to good children on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus is white-bearded man wearing a red coat and a hat, red trousers, and black boots. He travels on the 8th flying reindeer. He has helpers - magical elves who make the toys. Boxing Day It is usually celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas. In this day people open their Christmas presents and make visits to their relatives and friends.

Christmas Dinner. For Christmas dinner people eat turkey, potatoes and green vegetables. Then they have the Christmas pudding. At five o"clock it"s time for tea and Christmas cake.

The biggest Christmas tree in London, is in Trafalgar Square. The tree is a present from the people of Oslo, Norway. Christmas tree in London.

One of the main traditions in Britain is the Queen's Christmas Message or Speech. At three o'clock in the afternoon, the Queen gives her Christmas Speech to the nation which is broadcast on radio and television. The Queen's Speech

When do people celebrate Christmas Day in Europe? –

Snowflake 1: The 25th of December is Christmas Day in Europe .Christmas is always the happiest day of the year. Children like to think of it as their own holiday. But for everyone it is a very special time. The fun starts the night before, on the 24th of December, Christmas Eve. Traditionally this is the day when people decorate their trees. Children hang stockings at the end of their beds hopping that Farther Christmas will fill them with toys and sweets.

What do people usually send to their friends on Christmas? –

Snowman 1: People usually send greeting cards to all their relatives and friends. Christmas is a religious holiday. We celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. We celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It’s a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square. Most families write Christmas cards. In England almost every family receives more than 60 Christmas cards.

What do people usually do on Christmas Eve? –

Snowflake 2: On Christmas Eve people usually put their presents under the tree. Relatives usually meet for the big Christmas dinner.

What food do people usually eat for Christmas dinner?

Snowman 2: People usually eat turkey, potatoes with green vegetables, a pudding with tea for Christmas dinner. The traditional Christmas dinner is roast turkey with vegetables and Christmas pudding. In England people make Christmas pudding before Christmas. Everyone in family stirs the pudding and makes a wish. It’s a traditional meal, which people cook for Christmas party. When the pudding is hot they put 5-penny pieces in it, a button or a ring. If you find a button in your piece of pudding you will be rich, a ring – marriage.

5. The 3rd task is to find the definitions of the words. Each right answer is one point to the team. It should take you 1/5 minutes ( slide 5):

Children, let’s wish something bright and special to our guests. Students take turns and wish something good to our guests:

When everyone has finished expressing their wish, they sing the song “We wish you a Merry Christmas”( slide 19)

8. The 5th task for the teams’ captains. (slide 21)

Captains, please, come to me and choose one of the cards with the text. These texts are about Christmas celebrations in different countries. Your task is to read the chosen text and guess the country.

1. In this city a lot of people gather in Times Square and watch the “Big Apple” fall. The “Big Apple” isn’t a real apple. It’s a moving picture of an apple on a side of one of the big buildings in Times Square.

2. This country is sometimes called “the upside down world”. It lies in the Southern Hemisphere. During the Christmas holidays people often sunbathe on the beach or swim and surf in the ocean.

10. Children, it’s the time to count the gained points.

Advent– four Sundays before Christmas.

One of the popular traditions is the Advent Candle. An Advent candle often has 25 marks on it, a bit of the candle is burned down by one mark each day. In some homes, 24 candles are kept, one for each night from December 1 through Christmas eve.

Night time on Christmas Eve though is a very exciting time for young children. It is the time when Santa or Father Christmas comes. They hang up their stockings and go to sleep.

It is traditionally a time to give gifts to tradesmen, servants, and friends.


Christmas has been celebrated in England for thousands of years. According to the legend, King Arthur started it in the city of York in 571.

Nowadays people start preparing for the holiday in the beginning of December. People buy lots of presents and send cards to their friends and relatives. It is mostly a family holiday. Englishmen decorate their houses with green leaves, red paper decorations, Christmas Trees and colorful electric lights and glass balls.

Red and green are the traditional colors of Christmas. Green represents the continuance of life through the winter. Red symbolizes the blood of Jesus at his Crusifixion.


Christmas Tree is decorated with colored glass balls and toys, sweets, bells.

There is usually a bright star or the figure of the Christmas angel at the top of the tree.

The first Christmas Tree came to England in 1841 from Germany.

Nowadays, in London, near the statue of Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square, a giant Christmas Tree is set up and decorated each year. The Tree is a present from the people in Oslo, Norway.


One of British tradition is to hang stockings on the mantel to be filled with presents.
