Palm tree growth rate in nature. Features of growing a room palm tree are the secrets of a large and beautiful tree. Among the most common are

Without plants, any room seems dull and lifeless. Plants bring life, create an atmosphere and are more than just a decoration of a room, because they create a completely different, completely new dimension and beauty in the room. Palm trees are not the only elements of interior decoration, but, first of all, they are living organisms that require certain conditions for their maintenance. For their life and development, they need light, water, warmth and nutrition, and all these elements in certain proportions. About the types of palms and the features of caring for them - our article.

Reproduction and transplant

Palm trees are propagated by sowing freshly harvested seeds, and some species are offspring. Seeds germinate at 25-35°C. They are sown in pots with a mixture of sand or moss with sawdust.

A thick drainage layer is placed at the bottom of the pots, to which pieces of charcoal are added. Seed germination time depends on the species and can last from several days to several months. For example, pritchardia seeds germinate in 9-12 days, date palm - 30-50 days, chamerops - 45-60, coconut - 150-180 days.

Palm trees are transplanted in the spring before they begin to grow. Young plants are transshipped annually, old ones - after 3-4 years. When transplanting, the roots should not be damaged (cut roots almost always die off at room conditions), but rotten roots must be removed by cutting with a sharp knife to healthy tissue. The earth must be compacted after planting.

In some palms (date, kentia), the main roots rise very high from the ground, therefore, for their deeper planting, special high and narrow pots or boxes are used. To protect the roots protruding from the ground from drying out, they are covered with moss.

Young plants are planted in lighter soil - a mixture of 2 parts of leaf and 1 part of humus with the addition of sand (about 1/6 of the total volume of the mixture). During subsequent transplants, heavy soddy soil and large, horny chips are added to this mixture at the rate of 3-4 kg per 1 m³ of land.

Temperature regime

In winter, heat-loving palms are kept at + 14 ... + 16 ° С, the rest - at + 8 ... + 10 ° С. To enhance growth in the spring-summer period, fertilizing with organic fertilizers is used.

Lighting

Palm trees are very photophilous, and therefore they are placed as close as possible to the windows (as far as the leaves allow). In the summer, they are shaded from direct sunlight (light curtains), otherwise burns appear on the leaves.

Airing

During the ventilation of rooms in winter, they make sure that the plants do not freeze. Drafts should not be allowed. The optimum temperature for growth is + 16 ... + 18 ° С, at a higher temperature the air in the room becomes drier, and the tips of the leaves dry up on palm trees.

To prevent this phenomenon, in addition to maintaining a moderate temperature, plants are often washed and sprayed with water on their leaves. The dried ends of the leaves are cut off without affecting healthy tissue. The entire leaf, when dried or aged, is cut off only when the petiole turns yellow.

Watering

On sunny summer days, palm trees are watered abundantly, so that there is always water in the pan, but before each new watering, stagnant water is drained from the pans. It is advisable to always water with warm water (about + 20 ... + 30 ° С).

For better growth in the summer in the morning or evening, the leaves are strongly sprayed, in the winter they are wiped 2 times a month with a soft sponge dipped in warm water, and at first it is better to wash with a mild soapy solution. Date palms, chamerops and pritchardia for the summer can be taken out to the balcony or garden, in the open air. More tender palm trees (kentiy and patching) are shaded.

Palm trees are widely used for landscaping, sometimes for planting in flower beds and lawns. It is better to keep young plants in living rooms, and those that have grown from seeds in room conditions will be more adapted.

Types of indoor palms

Brachea (Brahea edulis)

It is a large palm tree that grows rapidly. Its trunk is strong, dark brown, the leaves are fan-shaped, rich green, located at the top of the trunk, forming a crown.

In its homeland, this type of palm tree has practically disappeared, but in other countries it has taken root perfectly, both as a street and indoor plant. The minimum t that a tree can withstand is +8 degrees, but it is better not to lower it to this. Choose a sandy-clay soil, not too wet. There is no need to artificially increase the humidity of the air. Watering - not too plentiful, but regular.

Features of care

In our country, brachea is a frequent guest - in apartments and houses. It must be kept away from sunny places so that the sun does not fall on the delicate palm leaves. But you don’t need to hide it in dark rooms either - everything should be in moderation.

Brachea is well suited for growing at home - it is unpretentious, and will not die if you forget to water it. It also tolerates relatively low temperatures. To propagate this palm, you need to collect the seeds that appear in the inflorescences and plant them. They germinate for a long time - several months.

Butia (Butia capitata)

It is a large, slow growing, solitary palm with a strong, gray trunk and a loose, elegantly curved crown of leaves. In nature, there are also fruiting specimens. It mainly grows in Brazil and Uruguay, on sandy soils.

Withstands frost from -8 to -12°C. Requires sunlight, moderate water in winter, sufficient in summer, moderate nutrients. Can be grown at home.

Features of care

The palm tree is a heat-loving plant, therefore, in order to grow it at home, it is necessary to provide it with a normal temperature - best of all, about +20 degrees. In summer, high humidity is also needed - the palm tree must be constantly watered and sprayed. In winter, watering should be rare. Once every 3-4 years, the palm tree must be replanted, changing the ground. Dry or diseased branches and leaves should also be trimmed regularly.

The palm is propagated by seeds. In order to grow an adult palm tree from seeds, you need to plant the seeds in pots with soil, constantly keeping the soil moist. Before planting the seeds, it is necessary to soak them in warm water for 24 hours, and cut the shell. Then the sprouted palm trees must be planted in separate pots.

Washingtonia

There are two main types of this palm tree: washingtonia fillifera (Washingtonia filifera) And washingtonia robustra (Washingtonia robusta).

The first is a massive fan-shaped palm from the arid southwestern regions of the United States. Large gray-green leaves and a strong gray trunk are considered its distinguishing features. The palm tree can tolerate cold down to -8°C. The trunk can reach 1 m in diameter. The maximum height of this palm tree is 15 m, but at home it will be much lower.

The second palm is much thinner. The maximum height of the tree is 22 m, it grows mainly in Mexico. The palm is fan-shaped, the leaves have white veins, there may be orange thorns. The leaves are purple in color.

Features of care

In order to grow this palm tree, it is necessary to keep the room warm. Too much water is not needed, water the plant as needed. In winter, watering should be reduced.

Planting should be done in a tall pot. It is advisable to put the palm tree in a lighted place, but make sure that direct rays do not fall on the leaves. Dried leaves must be removed in time. At home, the palm tree grows well, and caring for it is not too difficult.

Hyophorbe (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii)

This palm tree grows on islands in the Indian Ocean. It is small in size - its height is no more than 7 m. The trunk of a palm tree is smooth, with a thickening in the middle. The fan-shaped leaves are composed of feathery parts that give the plant an elegant look. At home, this palm tree is practically not found, but it is often grown at home. In the apartment, gioforba is an ornament and refreshes the room. It needs high humidity.

Features of care

The palm needs to be kept warm. It grows well in well-lit places, but the leaves must be protected from sunlight. The palm tree is quite demanding - it must be sprayed daily with water with a low lime content, maintain temperature and lighting.

With insufficient care, giophorba can get sick or die. The first sign of plant disease will be drying leaves. The main mistake is usually low humidity in the room. You can put an aquarium next to the plant.

Because the palm tree grows slowly, then it will also recover slowly. But if you cope with all the features of care, you will get a beautiful and unusual home plant.

Hamedorea (Chamaedorea)

Palm tree native to Central America. It grows in mountain forests, reaching a height of up to 5 m, has a smooth green trunk. Panicles are equipped with a large number of dark green feather leaves that look noticeably rolled up. Hamedorea blooms already in the initial years of life and then forms panicles with spherical flowers, from cream to yellow.

In general, it is - due to easy breeding and trouble-free care - the most popular indoor palm. It can tolerate location in the shade, dry air and calmly withstands rare or heavy watering. Anyone who manages to bring this easy-to-care palm tree to death should only buy artificial plants in the future.

Features of care

Sufficiently plentiful watering of the hamedorea is necessary all year round - its earthen ball should always be slightly moist, the soil should not dry out completely between waterings. It is important to remember that the frequency of watering depends on humidity, air temperature in the room where the plant is located, and a number of other factors. Therefore, we recommend checking the soil moisture at a depth of about two phalanxes of a finger before watering, especially at first, until you determine in practice how often the chamedorea will need to be watered in your home. For watering and spraying, use only settled water (it must be defended for at least 12 hours).

Lighting moderate, but the presence of a source of natural light or phytolamps is required. Hamedorea should be protected from direct sunlight, especially in summer. The bright sun leads to the burning of the leaves, they become pale.

Top dressing is required in the spring-summer period once every two weeks. During the dormant period from November to February - once a month with a half dose of fertilizer. You can use an all-purpose fertilizer or a special palm fertilizer. Fertilizer is applied only to moist soil immediately after watering.

Caryota

A low palm tree with a slender brown trunk. Her leaves are of an unusual shape - double, which hang down. This palm tree blooms once a year, inflorescences appear along the trunk, from top to bottom.

Karyota is distributed throughout South Asia and, above all, in the tropics. This is a very popular garden and park tree. As a houseplant, Karyota is also quite common. It will decorate any room or office. At home, the palm tree is not too demanding, but you need to know the basic parameters of care.

Features of care

Karyota is a very adaptable and really hardy houseplant. It withstands fairly low temperatures and low humidity. Under good conditions, plants grow very quickly. Ideal conditions for keeping a palm tree require enough water, medium or high humidity.

For optimal plant care, it is necessary to use special nutrients and fertilizers; you need to plant a palm tree in soil with a high content of humus. Karyota loves lighted and warm rooms, but direct contact with the rays on the leaves can lead to their disease and death.

Liviston (Livistona)

This is a palm tree that does not grow too fast at moderate temperatures, whose birthplace is the island of Java. But if you provide the palm with high temperature, good lighting in the room and humidity, the palm will grow much faster. It reaches a height of up to 15 m and has a smooth gray trunk.

The palm tree is fan-shaped, with light green leaves. Today it is one of the most popular indoor plants, because. it's not too demanding. The palm tree is quite frost-resistant, it does not need to be fertilized often.

Features of care

The soil should be regularly loosened. It is necessary to water regularly, but not too plentifully, it is better - with settled water. Water with a high content of lime impurities can kill your plant. It is good to maintain high humidity in the room, spray the leaves with water.

The room should have good lighting, but too much sun is not welcome. With a lot of sun exposure, the leaves of the plant will dry and become stained. For normal maintenance, it is necessary to maintain heat, not lower than + 20 ° C. At low temperatures, the palm will begin to hurt and may simply die.

Rhapis

It is a small, bushy palm tree, with a height not exceeding 3 m. It has a thin trunk and divided thin, stiff leaves. The flowers are yellow, fruits rarely appear. China is the birthplace of rapeseed. It grows slowly, but as a houseplant it has no equal.

The palm tree tolerates the lack of light and dry air well. For wintering, it is necessary to place the palm tree in a cool or cold room. The varieties of this palm tree are very similar, so they are often confused. Varieties include Rhapis excels, Rhapis humilis and Rhapis subtilis.

Features of care

Palm should be planted in sour loose soil. It is not too demanding on water, but it is necessary to water it with separated or filtered water. Humidity is encouraged, but not required. Palma prefers not too lit rooms, because. when directly exposed to sunlight, it begins to hurt.

Rapis is quite resistant to low temperatures - it can withstand up to -8°C, but the most optimal temperature will be from +15°C to +20°C. In summer, rapis can be taken out into the street, but choose a location so that the palm tree is in partial shade. Usually, with its content, there are no special problems even for beginners.

Chamerops (Chamaerops)

It is a slow growing, robust palm native to the Mediterranean region. It reaches a height of up to a maximum of 5 m. The trunk is covered with brown fibers. The leaves are dark green, very hard and dense. The leaf stalks have thorns. In most cases, a palm tree has several trunks that are closely spaced. The palm tree is quite easy to get used to home conditions, if you follow the recommendations for caring for it.

Palm Chamerops (Chamaerops). © tutknow

Features of care

The soil must be very loose. Watering is necessary regular, but not plentiful. High soil moisture can promote root rot. The room in which the palm tree is kept should be sunny. Chamerops is quite hardy, it tolerates both high and low temperatures (down to -10 ° C). If the temperature is lower, you need to take care of the roots of the plant by wrapping them in foil.

For wintering, the palm tree must be placed in a room, the optimum temperature will be approximately + 5 ° C. It is possible to place the plant for the winter in a dark place. At the end of the cold weather, it must be placed again in a lighted space. Regular transplant required.

This is only a small number of palm trees that you can grow at home and then enjoy the beauty of these unusual plants. From the smallest to the largest, from the colorful to the bright green, there is a palm tree to suit your taste.

I would like to know your experience in growing these beauties. Write about it in the comments to the article.

Palm trees are monocotyledonous woody plants, have a trunk without branches, their homeland is tropical and subtropical regions. Palm trees perform a decorative function, various parts of it are used as food, building material, raw materials for the production of all kinds of things. The question of how to grow a palm tree is easily solved if you follow certain requirements and provide the plant with proper care.

Sabal - a palm tree for growing at home

What are plants

There are about 200 genera and 3000 species in the palm family, which differ from each other in appearance and size. Some of them can grow only in natural conditions, some palms live in city apartments. There are palm trees that feel comfortable outdoors even in winter; they are successfully grown in suburban areas. Yubeya has the thickest trunk, it is about 1 m, vines do not have a trunk as such, only creeping leaves. Under natural conditions, the height of the palm tree can reach 12 meters. The leaves of plants are of two types: fan and pinnate.

Among the palm trees are:

  • coconut palm;
  • date palm;
  • rapes;
  • howea;
  • liviston;
  • hamedorea;
  • sabal.

How to grow a palm tree from seed

This is the most common method of plant propagation. You can successfully grow a palm tree from seeds if certain conditions are met:

  1. Take dry quality seeds, bought from a specialty store or plucked directly from a tree, check that all seeds are ripe.
  2. To clean the seeds, soak them for a day in warm water, which must be constantly changed.
  3. Open the thick skin so that air can enter the embryo.
  4. For germination, soak the seeds for a day, before planting, you can treat the seeds with a fungicide.
  5. Prepare dishes for sowing.
  6. Prepare a mixture for sowing from turf, humus, sand, garden soil.
  7. It is correct to place one seed in one container, at the bottom of which there should be a hole and drainage. Cover with foil to create a greenhouse effect. The depth of the seed in the ground and the temperature in the room depend on the type of palm tree.
  8. Sprouts need to provide optimal humidity, access to fresh air and sunlight.
  9. When the sprouts stretch up to 2 cm, they can be transplanted and the necessary care should be taken.

Quality palm seeds germinate well

How to grow a palm tree by dividing a bush

In this way, hamedorea, hamerops, karyota reproduce. The main condition is that the bush of the plant must be branched. The best time for this operation is May. From the tree, carefully, so as not to damage, cut off a process at least 25 cm long.

Place the shoot in a special soil mixture for palm trees or soil of the same composition as used for propagation by seeds. Above a container with a sprout located in a dark place, you can make a greenhouse.

A growing palm tree needs to be watered regularly. The flower will appear in about a month, and after three months it can be transplanted into another pot, not forgetting to properly care for it.

Favorable conditions for the plant

Care depends on the type. It should be remembered that the palm is a plant from the tropics. Caring for indoor plants is different from caring for plants in your backyard. Below we will talk about palm trees grown at home.

Appropriate place

The room must be spacious to accommodate the overgrown tree. It is better when the windows face south, especially for young plants. The pot should not stand in a corner in a cold place or on a cold windowsill. The plant must be protected from drafts.

Correct capacity

Pots need to be changed every 2-3 years, increasing its size by 1/3. When choosing a pot, you need to take into account the characteristics of the material from which it is made, it can be ceramic or plastic. The diameter of the container should not exceed its height, the color of the container should be light in order to avoid possible overheating in hot weather. The pot must have a tray.

The soil in the pot must be loosened so that it can freely pass moisture, otherwise the plant may die. When transplanting a palm tree, you need to save an earthen clod, only a change in the top layer of soil is possible. The acidity of the earth should not change.

Lighting

The plant needs diffused light, within 2/3 of the day it should be in the light zone. In the summer season, the plant must be protected from direct sunlight, and in winter it is permissible to put it on the windowsill. This rule applies especially to young flowers.

Humidity

Dry air is contraindicated for palm, several methods are used to humidify the air:

  • spraying plants from a spray bottle;
  • wiping the leaves with a damp cloth;
  • installation of a humidifier in the room;
  • placing a container of water near the pot.

How to water

Watering the plant is better with soft water at room temperature: settled or rain. Watering should take into account the type of plant, temperature, season. The colder the room, the less often you need to water.

In summer, daily watering is possible. The tree itself can regulate the level of moisture with the help of a drainage hole.

Transfer

A young flower (up to three years old) is transplanted annually, after three years, once every 2 years. Transplantation should be done in the spring, before that it is necessary to cut dry and yellow leaves. After transplanting for two weeks, the plant should be watered with caution.

A young plant is transplanted annually

top dressing

Even proper care can not always give the plant a flowering appearance; additional feeding is necessary. When it is actively growing, you can give it organic fertilizers, at other times - mineral fertilizers (every two weeks). In winter, you can do without fertilizers.

Do not be afraid to start a palm tree on your home windowsill. These huge indoor plants grow very slowly. In addition, a palm tree can become a real family heirloom! The palm tree in many cultures is considered a symbol of victory, bringing success to its owner. Many are afraid to start spectacular palm trees due to the fact that a giant can fly up to the ceiling from a small plant. You should not worry about this, because the palm tree grows very slowly. Even after 30 years of life, it will grow no higher than 3 m. In addition, there are miniature varieties of the plant, as if created for living in indoor conditions.

The palm tree creates vibrations that have a beneficial effect on the biofield.

Right choice

You can grow a palm tree by planting a seed, but this is a laborious and long process. It is better to buy a tree that has already grown a little in the store. When choosing, be careful! You take a big risk by acquiring a completely adult palm tree. It will take about six months to adapt to new conditions, and if the plant does not like something, it can get sick and even die. Therefore, buy small shoots or very young palm trees. They quickly get used to the changes and increase the green mass. Choose specimens with beautiful healthy leaves without various spots, creases and damage. Make a purchase in the spring during active growth, then by winter the plant will get stronger.

You just want to put a large palm tree in the corner of the room, but you should not do this, because it does not tolerate blackouts. Find a place where a guest from the tropics will receive diffused sunlight throughout the day. As a rule, these are windows that face east, southwest, southeast. Additional lighting will be needed on the northern windowsill.

Most types of palm trees do not tolerate direct sunlight, so shade them with a curtain in the summer. But in winter, plants can be placed on the windowsill without fear, unless, of course, the dimensions allow. In order for the stem to grow straight and even, periodically change the sides of the lighting of the palm tree. Focus on the top of a young leaf that unfolds - it should be directed deep into the room.

How to care for a palm tree?

The palm tree needs to be repotted every two to three years as it grows. In this case, a new pot must be chosen a third larger than the previous one. Its shape is also important: high options are best. Small bowls will not work, because the root system of the palm tree is powerful, the roots grow down and to the sides. Check that the drainage holes are large.

Palm trees are tropical plants, so it is very important to provide them with high air humidity and regular watering, but without moisture stagnation. To assess the humidity, take a handful of earth from the top layer, squeeze it in a fist, and then unclench it - dry earth will fall apart, wet earth will not. In winter, water the plant only with settled water at room temperature, cold watering is strictly prohibited. Palm trees love spraying and showering, especially in summer, and in winter, just wipe the leaves with a damp cloth a couple of times a week.

How a plant feels is easy to recognize by its appearance. If the tips of the leaves turn yellow, then the air in the apartment is dry, try to create more humidity. If the leaves are curled, you need to check the condition of the root system: the plant is either flooded, or vice versa, overdried.

5 best palm trees for your home

There are a lot of types of palms, but they are conditionally divided into two large groups, the names of which speak for themselves: pinnate and fan-leaved.

Karyota

A very original palm. Its leaf blades consist of two feathers, for which it received the name fishtail. The karyota is low (1.5-2 m), tolerates low temperatures and low humidity well. Karyotes grow both in the form of a single-stemmed tree and in the form of bushes, which eventually form real thickets.

Liviston

The leaves are of the classical form inherent in palm trees: they are spreading and fan-shaped, in young plants they look like an accordion. At home, the palm tree grows no higher than 2 m. Old leaves, dying, form scales characteristic of the palm tree. Caring for her is quite simple, but she is demanding on the soil and humidity in the room.

Ralis

The name of the plant is translated from Greek as "rod" or "stick". Therefore, flower growers often call the plant a stick palm. Rapis is ideal for small spaces. The plant is unpretentious in care, it does not need frequent watering and spraying. Even inexperienced flower growers should not be afraid of it, because the main advantage of this palm tree is the ability to quickly adapt to different conditions.

Sabal

This is a classic example of a fan palm, which is striking in size. The height of the sabal, even in room conditions, can reach 2 m, and the width of its luxurious leaves is up to 2 m. The sabal needs space. Caring for it will not be difficult, because this palm tree is almost the only one that can easily forgive you for a short drought, overflow or lack of top dressing.

Trachycarpus

This palm tree has the rare ability to tolerate temperatures as low as -10°C and also grows well indoors. Its appearance is unusual: the trunk is covered with coarse fibers, it is decorated with a spectacular bunch of fan leaves. In the room, the trachycarpus grows to an impressive size - up to 2.5 m.

Do you want to create a unique beauty exhibition? Grow a tree plant. For those who have such a desire, a date palm from a stone at home is the best option.

Growing at home

To grow a date palm, you will have to be patient. It grows slowly and, unfortunately, will not bear fruit at home. To do this, its height must be at least 15 m. But this is not necessary. Even without fruits, an attractive plant with huge fans of leaves will decorate any interior. This will require a lot of space and light.

How to sprout a date bone?

Every plant starts with a seed. The date palm is no exception. There is no need to specifically look for its seeds - you can buy dates at any vegetable store. There is no point in planting unsprouted date palm seeds. Most likely, they simply will not rise or the process will drag on for a very long time.

So let's grow:

  1. choose the bones from the dates bought in the store;
  2. we inspect them for damage, traces of mold or insects, we reject all non-standard ones;
  3. soak in clean water for a day to remove the remnants of the pulp, changing it several times, the pulp contains substances that inhibit seed germination;
  4. we wash the bones;
  5. we wake up the seed for 48 hours in a thermos with slightly heated melt water with the addition of a few grains of humate;
  6. we put it in a container with moist loose material: vermicult, hydrogel, crushed and sterilized sphagnum moss, placing it all in a plastic bag;
  7. for seed germination, a temperature of about 35 degrees is needed - a place near a heating radiator is ideal;
  8. germination takes from 2 to 3 months, and all this time it is necessary to monitor the humidity of the substrate and remove the condensate formed on the film.

As soon as sharp little sprouts appeared, it was time to move the bones into the ground.

Ground requirement

The best soil, both for young palms and for grown plants, is a palm substrate.

If it is not possible to purchase it, prepare the soil of the following composition:

  • sod land;
  • peat;
  • sand.

All components are taken in equal parts. You can add a little steamed moss or hardwood sawdust for looseness. At this stage, a pot 10 or 12 cm high is enough for the plant. There should be drainage at the bottom of the pot.

Landing Rules

Here among flower growers there is no consensus. Most people think that the stone should be stuck vertically so that there is a 1 cm layer of soil above it. But there is an opinion that it is better to germinate seeds laid in pots horizontally with the seam down and covered with a layer of soil 2 cm thick. In any case, for the sake of one bone, start not worth the trouble. Their germination is not very good, so it is easier to plant several seeds in two pots in different ways and see which one is more effective. Waiting for the shoots will have to be patient. Germination can take up to 5 months. All this time, a plastic bag should be put on the pot, which should be removed for ventilation. The soil is sprayed with a spray gun to maintain its moisture content. Pots should be at a temperature of 20 to 30 degrees. Light at this time they do not need.

How to care for a palm tree at home?

To grow a date palm from a seed, it is not enough to plant it, you need to properly care for the newly emerging seedlings and adult plants. This tree is very sensitive to any inaccuracies in care, to which it responds with poor health. Young, newly hatched sprouts are especially in need of attention. They grow very quickly, which is not surprising - after all, this is a tree. Its growth force is much higher than that of herbaceous plants. Only after the opening of the first leaf, the growth rate slows down. The first leaves are completely unlike palm leaves, they are linear with clearly visible longitudinal grooves. It is then that they will split into segments that make up amazingly beautiful fans.

At the beginning of growth, the palm tree needs especially a lot of light, so the pots are placed on the brightest window. The air temperature for young plants should not fall below 20 degrees. In winter, you can insulate the window sill from below so that cold air does not lower the temperature of the soil in the pot.

If several plants sprouted in a pot, each will need an individual container for growth.

Soil for transplantation needs the following composition:

  • humus - 4 parts;
  • peat - 1 part;
  • turf and leaf land, sand - 2 parts each.

It is good to add crushed charcoal to the mixture. Transplantation into individual pots with a diameter of about 15 cm is carried out when the first leaf is 15 cm long. Drainage should consist of expanded clay mixed with charcoal. Its thickness is about 2 cm.

If possible, the palm tree should spend outdoors in summer. Such a "summer vacation" will benefit the tree.

The main conditions for keeping a date palm at room conditions:

  • maximum illumination, but diffused light; it is in its homeland that the tree withstands the scorching rays of the sun without harm to health, in a room they can cause a burn on the leaves; even in winter, daylight hours for a plant should not be less than 12 hours; it is extended by highlighting with phytolamps.

For symmetrical development of the crown, every 14 days the pot with the plant is rotated 180 degrees.

  • air humidity about 50%;
  • air temperature in summer - from 20 to 25 degrees, in winter it is reduced to 16 degrees to slow down the metabolism in plant tissues in conditions of lack of lighting;
  • planting and transplanting into soil for date palms, which has a neutral or slightly acidic reaction;
  • mandatory drainage;
  • daily airing of the room;
  • timely proper feeding and watering.

How to water correctly?

The irrigation schedule and the amount of water directly depend on the time of year. In summer, they are watered so that the earthen ball does not dry out - from 3 to 4 times a week. During the period of forced dormancy from watering to watering, the earth ball should dry slightly. It is enough to moisturize the palm tree 1-2 times a week. Overflow is harmful, so excess water from the pan must be poured out half an hour after moistening the soil. Particular attention is paid to the quality of irrigation water. Ideally, it should be melted or clean rain, soft with a minimum amount of salt. The water temperature is about 33 degrees.

The plant responds well to spraying with warm soft water, especially in summer. He will also need sanitary procedures - wiping the leaves with a damp cloth, followed by drying with a dry cloth. Once a month, plants can be given a warm shower, but the soil in the pot must be covered so that it does not get wet.

Top dressing and fertilizer

In the season of active growth - in spring and summer, the tree is fed with complex fertilizer for palm trees once every 14 days. In winter, the intensity of top dressing is reduced by 2-3 times.

The palm tree responds very well to foliar feeding on the leaves. They are made the same fertilizer, but its concentration in the solution is reduced by 10 times. The frequency of top dressing is from 3 to 1 time per month, depending on the growth strength of the plant.

Plant transplant

The best time to transplant a palm tree is April. Young plants need this operation annually. After 5 years, transplantation is practiced every 2-3 years, and in plants older than 10 years, they simply change the top layer of the substrate. The palm itself will tell you that it needs a new pot - roots will appear in the old one from the drainage hole.

They are thick, but fragile. She is extremely negative about their damage. For her, transplantation is a big stress, it must be done carefully, preserving the earthen ball as much as possible.

The pot is chosen high, each transplant increases its diameter by 3-4 cm. Drainage is necessarily laid on the bottom of the pot. The soil is prepared in the same way as for planting young plants.

The date palm is transplanted only by transshipment, without exposing the roots.

If this does happen, you will have to cut off some of the leaves in order to maintain a balance between the underground and aboveground parts. Even in non-old plants, you can replace the top layer of soil - there will be more nutrition for the palm tree. This procedure is carried out every six months.

reproduction

The date palm reproduces by seeds. In some species, shoots may appear. These include the Robelin date.

If the daughter plant has developed roots, it can be separated.

  • With a sharp knife, cut off the baby as close to the trunk as possible without damaging it.
  • We transplant the delenka into the soil for palm trees, acting in the same way as when transplanting an adult plant.
  • At first, you will have to put a plastic bag on a pot with a young palm tree so that it takes root better.

Do not forget to spray the young plant more often.

Pests and diseases of the date palm

A date palm that spent the summer outside can acquire a spider mite, scale insect or mealybug. But even if the plant is constantly kept in room conditions, pests still appear. Insecticides, for example, Actellik, will help to cope with them. Only it is desirable to treat them with a plant in the open air. Of the preventive measures, a monthly warm shower with washing the leaves with soapy water is good. But the soil in the pot must be protected from it.

The main diseases of the palm are pink rot and spotting. Plants that are weakened by poor care usually get sick. Control measures - fungicides, but not containing copper: Mancozeb, Ridomil.

Potential Growing Problems

The palm tree is very sensitive to compliance with all the rules for care. When retreating from them, the leaves are the first to suffer.

  • The tips of the leaves dry - the air is too dry, you need to spray the plants more often.
  • The leaves turn yellow - lack of moisture, you need to water more often.
  • The leaves darken - waterlogging, reduce the amount of watering.
  • The date palm stops growing - it's too cold in the room. At temperatures below 16 degrees, the roots function poorly, practically not absorbing nutrients. Another reason may be the high acidity of the soil. It acidifies when watered with hard water. Such a plant will have to be transplanted.

In general, caring for an indoor giant is not so difficult. Palm trees are very responsive to care and will please the grower with good growth and a healthy look.

Palm tree - exotic home plant

Dreaming of a corner of the tropics on your windowsill? About exotic? Then, get an indoor palm tree. And how to care for such an exotic houseplant, World Without Harm will tell you ...

Which palm trees do not grow at home

Before we get into specific tips and tricks on how to care for a palm tree at home, let's decide which such plants should not be kept indoors. And no matter how hard we try to create comfortable conditions for them to grow in an ordinary apartment, we are unlikely to succeed. The point is that

such palm trees need special maximum lighting, and throughout the daylight hours, and this should be direct sunlight, high temperature and high humidity.

It is not possible to create such a microclimate on the windowsill. Therefore, in order not to torment the plant, and not to disappoint yourself, you should not start the following types of palm trees at home: Bismarkia noble, Brahea, Archontophoenix cumminghaniana (King Palms), Pinangas and Cyrtostachys, most Licualas, Syagrus romanofskiana (Queen Palms), Verschefeltia species , Ravenea rivularis, Genomonas…

If you can create comfortable and correct conditions for growth and development for such plants, go for it, and these exotic guests will delight you with their violent growth.

What are palm trees? What types of palm trees grow on our Black Sea coast? Can they be grown at home? Which of them can be grown independently from seeds? Here we will try to answer these questions. To begin with - general information.

Palm leaves are characterized by pinnate and fan type. The leaves are spirally arranged on petioles. Flowers unisexual or bisexual. The fruits are a drupe or a nut.

Palm trees grown at home from seeds are in a rosette state for a long time, and only after the rosette reaches the required diameter does the stem grow in height. This feature makes it possible to keep young palm trees grown from seed in room conditions. The following types of palms are most suitable for this: Canary date, capitate butia, sabal palmetto, low (squat) cameraops, thread-bearing washingtonia, Fortune's trachycarpus.

Canarian date

The Latin name is Phoenix canariensis Chahand. This plant is dioecious, evergreen. It develops like a tree, but more like a large wide bush 10-20 m tall, with a massive, unbranched false trunk, covered with the bases of old leaves.

In open ground on the Black Sea coast, the palm tree reaches a height of 12-15 m. The leaves are large, up to 4 m. There are sharp needle-like spines along the edges of the leaf petiole.

This palm tree blooms in summer and autumn. Male inflorescences up to 2 m long, female inflorescences shorter. The fruit is ovoid, yellowish-brown, 2.5 cm long, with rough pulp, inedible. Propagated by seeds.

Date finger edible

The Canarian date should not be confused with the edible date, the palmate date (Phoenix dactylifera). Unfortunately, seeds extracted from the fruits of an edible date germinate poorly - after all, before the dates get to the consumer, they significantly lose their germination capacity. In addition, the temperature required for germination, 20-25 ° C, can only be maintained in greenhouses and greenhouses.

The city of Basra in southern Iraq is considered the world capital of edible dates. 420 varieties of this species are concentrated here. Arabic wisdom says that "the palm tree should stand in the water with its base, and drown in the hot rays of the sun with its top."

The date palm is a dioecious plant. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks hung several male panicles inside the crowns, pouring out pollen, since without artificial insemination, female specimens are fruitless.

Butia capitate

The Latin name is Butia capitata. This type of palm is native to Brazil. It grows in mountainous areas on sandy soils. The butia trunk has a characteristic capitate thickening at the base, gradually tapering upwards.

The emergence of new leaves begins in April and continues until the end of September. During the growing season, from 4 to 9 leaves are formed, and each lives up to 7 years.

The palm tree is beautiful with its openwork crown, lush inflorescences and fruits.

In the open field of the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, butia begins flowering and fruiting from the age of 10-12. Rarely blooms indoors.

In butia, the seed is rounded oblong, pointed at the ends, up to 20 mm long and 10 mm wide, with three distinct sutures. In the lower part there are three rounded pores, closed with loose corked tissue - this is the place where the embryo exits.

The seeds contain about 60% liquid coconut oil. Butia fruits are used for eating raw and for making jams and liqueurs.

Before germinating butia seeds, it is recommended to carry out their long-term stratification in wet sand or peat. Mechanical stratification is possible - sawing of seed coats or careful destruction of corked tissue with a sharp metal object.

Freshly harvested seeds germinate after stratification within 35-45 days. In some cases, the process can take up to 24 months.

Butia capitate is frost-resistant - it can withstand temperatures down to -10 ° C. Drought-resistant. Grows well in sandy soils.

At room conditions, butia requires regular watering, and in summer the plant must be fed with flower fertilizers once every two weeks. For it, you should use the soil mixture for palm trees, sold in stores.

Sabal palmetto

This type of palm (lat. Sabal palmetto) is native to North America. Its single trunk in the open ground reaches a height of 20 m. The leaves are fan-shaped.

Inflorescences up to 2 m long. The fruit is a black globular drupe.

On the Black Sea coast, sabal palmetto blooms and produces viable seeds that usually germinate within four months.

Stratification at 35° (about one month) shortens germination time. Soaking in hot water (about 90°C), and especially removing the cap over the embryo, also accelerates seed germination. At home, young, not yet opened, leaves are used as food as vegetables, they are called “palm cabbage!”

Chamerops squat

The botanical name of this palm species is Chamaerops humilis. Came to Europe from Africa. Cultivated in greenhouses for over 300 years. This is a bushy palm tree with several trunks 2-3 m high, growing from a common base. In the Sochi arboretum of the Research Institute of Gorlesecology there are specimens with 7-10 or more trunks in a bush.

The palm grows slowly. During the summer it forms up to 7 leaves, which usually live for 7 years. Blooms in May-June. The fruit is a drupe, ripens in November-December.

The palm tree is drought-resistant, undemanding to the soil. Propagated by seeds.

Seeds in the pulp of the fruit do not germinate. After removing the pulp, germinate within 2 months at room temperature. Removing the cap causes accelerated germination of seeds in 11 days.

Washingtonia filamentous or filamentous

The Latin name is Washingtonia filifera. She is native to southwestern North America. This is a very beautiful fan palm. The trunk in the homeland reaches a height of 30 m. The leaves are fan-shaped with delicate thin threads hanging between the leaf segments.

Inflorescences are compound. The flowers are bisexual with a strong smell. The fruit is an indehiscent drupe.

On the Black Sea coast, it blooms and bears fruit abundantly, the fruits ripen in December. This is one of the fastest growing palm trees.

Easily propagated by seeds. Germination 80-90%. At a temperature of 35 ° C in greenhouse conditions, seedlings appear on the seventh day. Under normal conditions - within a month.

This type of palm tree will look good in spacious rooms - halls, offices, greenhouses. Care is simple, but there is one feature - in winter it will feel more comfortable in cool conditions. If you cannot maintain the temperature in the room no higher than 20 ° C (preferably 15-18 ° C), then the dishes with the plant should be kept in a pan with water and sprayed daily. At high room temperatures and dry air, it can shed its leaves.

Seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.

Trachycarpus Fortune

This type of palm (lat. Trachycarpus fortunei) in its homeland, in China, Burma, Japan, grows up to 10 m. At the top of the trunk it forms a bunch of fan-shaped leaves, the petioles of which reach a length of 0.5 to 1.5 m. The flowers are unisexual, dioecious , collected in large paniculate inflorescences. The fruit is a drupe. Abundantly fructifies from 20 years. Blossoms in May, fruits ripen in December-January.

It is the most hardy of all fan palms.

It is undemanding to the soil. Easily propagated by seeds. Seeds germinate within a month.

Young plants at room conditions are recommended to be transferred once a year to larger pots. This accelerates their growth and makes it possible to remove rotten and dried parts of the root. All transplanting work must be carried out in the spring, at the beginning of the growing season.

Trachycarpus Fortune tolerates transplantation well in adulthood.

In many places on the Black Sea coast, it gives abundant self-seeding and runs wild.

Having once visited Mexico, I literally fell in love with this country. At the moment I am in my homeland, and something tells me that in the future I need to go to the country of my dreams already for permanent residence, which is being actively worked on.

Despite this, while I am in my hometown, I decided to bring a piece of the tropics to the local realities of my apartment in order to recreate the atmosphere of Mexico, which I so desired for me, and the palm tree is the best way to cope with such a task.

Given this fact, today I will talk about all types of palm trees suitable for indoor conditions, share the secrets of their cultivation and care, and also help you choose a variety based on its origin and your preferences.

House palms are considered to be wild palms that, due to their physiological characteristics, are able to successfully grow and develop in a relatively small amount of soil, successfully tolerate a relative lack of sunlight on a regular basis, and have a moderate growth rate that allows them to be indoors for many years without growing out of him.

Despite the fact that now there is a fairly large range of varieties of indoor palms, none of them is 100% indoor, and here's why:

  1. Absolutely all varieties are unsuitable for growing in the open field of the CIS countries due to cold winters, during which palm trees are placed either in greenhouses or brought into the house. In resort regions with relatively warm winters, the temperature of which rarely drops below -10 ° C, it is possible to grow some types of palm trees in open ground, but on condition that they are warmed for winter (leaves are tied and the plant is covered with a dome with a wire frame equipped with foam walls, after which the dome is wrapped with a thick cloth). This method allows you to effectively grow a palm tree without the need to transplant it, but this is only relevant for resort areas;
  2. Any palm tree needs a long light day, even if it is a shade-loving variety. With the onset of winter, any palm tree needs additional lighting for at least 10 hours a day. Lighting can be neglected, but then your palm tree will be stunted and underdeveloped (look at the date palms in the halls of large buildings);
  3. Not a single palm tree will reach the peak of its development and beauty even in the best apartment conditions, and the point here is the size of the tree itself. A palm tree 1.5 meters high is essentially a child in the world of plants, but for an apartment it is already a giant occupying the entire room. When purchasing a palm tree, you should remember that in 10 years you will have to look for a new home for it. However, I do not dissuade you from buying, live for today.

The best types of palm trees for the home

If you need an indoor palm tree, pay attention to the following types of them:

  1. Date palm. A classic of the genre, which has been grown everywhere in the apartment conditions of the CIS countries since the middle of the last century. This plant has become so widespread due to its ease of care and maintenance, as well as the ability to live for years in conditions of lack of sunlight. The date palm is ubiquitous in flower shops, where you can buy both the plant itself and its seeds (date pit). The date palm is very large, but due to its extremely slow growth, it is able to live in an apartment for decades. The homeland of the plant is Africa, the Canary Islands, as well as Arabia. The date palm is perfect for people who adore Egypt, since this plant is associated with it;
  2. Washingtonia. I must say right away that this is my favorite kind of palm trees. The fact is that the birthplace of this plant is Mexico, mentioned at the beginning of the article, as well as the border regions of the United States with it. In addition to the origin of this plant, its appearance is one of the most beautiful among all other types of palm trees that can be successfully grown at home. Moreover, Washingtonia is, without exaggeration, the most unpretentious palm tree for indoor maintenance, and has only one drawback, fast growth rates. Washingtonia has 2 varieties in the form of thread-bearing Washingtonia, as well as powerful Washingtonia. It is thread-bearing Washingtonias that are ubiquitous in flower shops, since powerful Washingtonia can grow up to 30 meters in height, and does not even fit closely into the concept of a houseplant;
  3. Hovea. Also a very interesting and incredibly beautiful palm tree, originally from Australia. The palm tree is not demanding on sunlight, and grows without problems in apartment conditions. Moreover, with a lack of sunlight, the leaves of Hovea do not turn pale, and the plant retains its natural color. Hovea grows very slowly, and having bought a young plant in a store, it will grow to the ceiling of your apartment in 10-15 years, while it will have a decorative appearance even at a very young age;
  4. Hamedorea. This palm is also from Mexico, and also tolerates a lack of sunlight well. The fact is that the plant is an inhabitant of dense tropical forests, on the lower tier of which there is fundamentally not enough light. Hamedorea is one of the few palms that are planted several in one pot, which creates a kind of dense shrub. If you love rainforests, this plant is exactly what you need.

Palm tree care at home

Each of the palms listed above requires certain conditions of detention, for example:

  1. Date palm. The plant should be illuminated for at least 10 hours a day, partial shade is allowed. The temperature of the spring and summer maintenance of this palm tree starts from 20-30°C. The winter temperature of the content should not fall below 15°C. In the summer, the palm tree is watered abundantly, without waiting for the complete drying of the earth coma, but also without turning the earth into mud. In winter, the palm tree is watered as the soil dries out by 5-10 cm. During the growth period, the palm tree is fertilized 2-3 times per season; in winter, fertilizers can be discarded. When buying a date palm, I recommend paying attention to the dwarf date, which grows to a height of no more than 2.5 meters;
  2. Washingtonia. The plant should receive at least 10 hours of light per day (in which case the plant will be somewhat stunted), and in ideal conditions, receive 15 hours of diffused or direct sunlight. Keeping temperature in winter can drop to 10°C for a short time, but it is better to keep it at 15°C. Summer temperatures can reach +35°C. Watering in the summer is carried out as the top (5 cm) soil layer dries out. In winter, the soil is watered once a month. Fertilizers are applied in the summer, 2-3 times per season. You can fertilize up to 5 times per season, but in this case the palm tree will grow even faster, which is not always necessary in an apartment;
  3. Hovea. The plant is able to grow in shading, but daylight hours should not last less than 10 hours. Hovea also tolerates direct sunlight, which means it can be placed on any windows. The palm tree is kept at a summer temperature of +20°C, in winter the temperature should not fall below +18°C. Water the plant abundantly, preventing the soil from completely drying out. In winter, watering is reduced to 1 time per month. Hovea is fertilized about 2 times during the summer, since the palm tree grows very slowly, it makes no sense to fill it with top dressing. Howea grows on the coasts of Australia, which means it needs moist air. Spray Hovea more often, and keep away from batteries in winter;
  4. Hamedorea. The palm tolerates 8 hours of daylight very well, and feels great in shading (in the rainforests where it comes from, it gets dark very early). The palm tree is thermophilic, which means that in winter the temperature of its content should not be lower than + 16 ° C. In summer, the palm tree is kept at a temperature of + 20-27 ° C, while not exposing it to the open sun. Chamedorea is extremely demanding on air humidity, which means that its leaves must be sprayed several times a week. In winter, the palm tree should be placed as far as possible from radiators and fireplaces. Fertilizing Hamedorea is carried out 2-3 times a month, throughout the summer. Water the plant should be after a few centimeters of the top soil in the pot have dried. Remember, Hamedorea loves moist air, but not waterlogged soil.

Be careful, as some plants are positioned as palm trees, but they are not. The most common "pseudo-palms" are listed below:

  1. Castor oil. The people called this plant a palm tree, as it has a long trunk with hanging and large leaves. In fact, the plant belongs to the genus Euphorbia, and has nothing to do not only with palm trees, but with trees in general. In the CIS countries it is an annual;
  2. Dracaena. For an inexperienced person, dracaena may well pass for a palm tree, but in fact the plant belongs to the category of asparagus and succulent shrubs. In the CIS countries it is a perennial;
  3. Yucca. Also one of my favorite plants that has a very beautiful appearance, and in general is also similar to a palm tree (for an inexperienced person). Yucca belongs to the family of tree-like evergreen agaves, grows throughout Mexico and the desert regions of the United States.

When buying any variety of palm, carefully compare it with the names and photographs in a competent source, as some types of these plants are outwardly similar to each other, but require different care!

  • Firstly, these trees like rooms with good lighting, but do not tolerate direct sunlight. For protection, a tulle curtain or blinds is enough.
  • Secondly, palm trees are terribly afraid of drafts. Therefore, try to keep fresh air from the open window does not fall on the sissies.
  • Thirdly, the roots of these trees are very sensitive to cold. A pot even with a large plant is not recommended to be placed on a cold windowsill or on marble floor tiles.
  • Fourthly, all palm trees, even native to deserts, are moisture-loving, so in summer they need to be watered almost daily, in winter - moderate watering. But with all the love for water, palm trees cannot stand overflow.
  • Fifth, all arecaceae should be sprayed regularly, especially in heated rooms in winter. Use warm water, spray the leaves on both sides.
  • Sixth, another feature common to all palms. The growing point of palms is at the top of the stem, and if you cut the stem at this point, the palm will die.

reproduction

Palm trees can be propagated by seeds, but this is quite difficult. In addition, the seeds lose their viability quickly, so try to buy fresh seeds. It is best to sow in late winter or early spring. Before sowing, large seeds with a hard shell are carefully filed (do not damage the seed) and left to soak in warm water at 30-35 ° C for 2-4 days. For seedlings, choose pots no more than 15 cm in height so that the roots do not grow much in length. At the bottom of the pot, put drainage from shards (brick chips), a mixture of river sand and expanded clay.

Palm trees need rich soil, otherwise the trees will not grow well.. Therefore, when transplanting a plant (it is advisable to do this in the spring), take 2 parts of humus-leaf and light clay-turf soil, 1 part of peat, sand and rotted manure, as well as a little charcoal. When transplanting, pay attention to the root of the plant. If it went deeper, choose a pot of greater height, if it has grown in breadth, you should take dishes of a larger diameter. Remove diseased roots during transplantation, put good drainage on the bottom of the pot, place the plant in a pot, fill it with earth and compact it. Do not put the transplanted palm in the sun and water sparingly for the first two weeks.. And now more about the secrets of caring for different types of indoor palms.

Rapis (lat. Rhapis)

In summer, you can not keep a palm tree in the bright sun, it is advisable to take it out into the air. In winter, it requires light and a temperature of at least 7 ° C. Watering abundantly in summer, spraying 2 times a day, (you can not wipe the leaves) in winter - less often and do not let the water stagnate so that the roots do not rot, spray three times a week. To increase humidity, you can put the pot in a tray with wet pebbles. Rapis is transplanted annually, after five years - after three to four years.

Chrysalidocarpus (lat. Chrysalidocarpus)

Areca - a palm tree (as it is also called) tolerates both the sun and partial shade well. The most optimal temperature for it is 18-22 ° C. It is advisable to water the palm tree three times a week, in winter - once every seven to ten days. Be sure to spray, the leaves are gently wiped with a damp sponge.

Date (lat. Phoenix)

Young plants need diffused light, full sunlight does not threaten palms older than four years. With a lack of light, the leaves of the date stretch, become brittle.. In principle, plants love high temperatures (24-28 ° C), however, due to the dryness of the air in room conditions, the tips of the leaves dry at this temperature. In winter, plants are in a dormant period. For dates, it is good to maintain a winter temperature in the range of 15-18 ° C. For date Robelin in winter, the temperature should not be lower than 14°C, the optimum is 16-18°C. Canarian date palm can winter and at a temperature of 8-10 °C. For all dates, air stagnation is very harmful. therefore, it is necessary to ensure ventilation of the premises at all times. However, do not forget that constant drafts in winter can be detrimental to the plant.

Watering in the spring-summer period is plentiful, as the top layer of the substrate dries. After watering for 2-3 hours (but no more), water should be left in the pan. In the autumn-winter period, water moderately, a day or two after the top layer of the substrate has dried. The substrate should not only not be overdried, but also excessively waterlogged. Irrigate with soft, settled water with a low calcium content.

Date prefers high humidity. Spraying is useful for him throughout the year. Spray with well-settled or filtered water. For a plant, it is desirable to choose a place with maximum humidity. Particularly affected by dry air date Robelin. To increase humidity, the plant can be placed on a pallet with wet moss, expanded clay or pebbles. In this case, the bottom of the pot should not touch the water. Periodically, date leaves need to be washed. This procedure should be carried out at least once every two weeks.

From April to the end of August, every 10 days, plants need to be fed with organic fertilizer., sometimes alternating it with potassium nitrate (10 g per 10 liters of water). In winter, top dressing is reduced to 1 time per month.

Howea (lat. Howea)

It likes daylight, although it grows well under artificial lighting, it can stay in a dark room for quite some time. Water it regularly with settled water that does not contain lime. In summer, spray the plant daily with soft warm water or give it a shower, especially at temperatures above 24 ° C. Once a week, pamper the howea by rubbing its leaves with a damp sponge. You can use leaf cleaners based on vegetable oils, or add 6-7 drops of milk to a cup of water.

Hamedorea(lat. Chamaedorea)

Ideal palm for beginners. Relatively dark corners of the apartment, normal room temperature will suit her. Just do not forget to water it abundantly (a little less often in winter), and spray it: dry air, especially if the palm tree is next to the central heating radiator, causes it to be damaged by spider mites. A small plant is transplanted every two years.

Hamerops (lat. Chamaerops)

This species is a purely tub plant, i.e. in summer it is taken out into the fresh air, and in winter it is kept in a cool room, along with fuchsias and geraniums. During the winter, the palm tree needs fresh air, so you can not keep this plant in rooms without windows. In summer and winter, regularly spray the palm tree (in cold rooms around + 5 ° C, the procedure can replace watering). Hamerops, by the way, can also be placed on the south window.

Coconut palm (lat. Cocos nucifera)

One of the most light-loving palm trees. The optimum temperature is + 20-23 ° С. If the coconut is left indoors during the summer, leave the windows open to let in fresh air. Like heat, this plant needs high humidity. Spray your palm regularly. When watering, make sure that the nut from which the tree develops does not get water during spraying or watering - it can rot.

Liviston(lat. Livistona)

He likes bright, sunny rooms, in summer it is better to take them out to the garden or to the balcony. In winter, the palm tree is kept at a temperature not lower than + 5 ° C. Watered with warm water. The palm tree is transplanted once every few years. Trim dried leaves if they are 2/3 dry. In spring and summer, feed the plant monthly with flower fertilizer.

Trachycarpus (lat. Trachycarpus)

A very unpretentious plant, which is suitable for both bright sun and partial shade. In the open air, it is not afraid of lowering the temperature to -10 ° C. Water sparingly, but keep the soil ball slightly moist at all times. Reduce watering in winter. Spray and wash the leaves regularly and turn the plant from time to time. Trachycarpus should be transplanted in July, because. in the conditions of apartments, the increased growth of the palm tree occurs from August to December, and in April the palm tree enters a dormant period.
