Development and design
Stephen Hillenburg was interested in the oceans from an early age and began to develop his artistic abilities as a child. In college, he majored in marine biology and, to a lesser extent, art. After graduating from college in 1984, he worked for oceanographic institute, in the town Dana Point, California - at an educational institution in the field of ocean science, where he had the idea to create a comic called The Intertidal Zone which led to the creation of SpongeBob SquarePants. In 1987, Hillenburg left the institute to pursue a career in animation and began working on a project about anthropomorphic creatures living at the bottom of the sea. He drew several concept sketches, but it took almost 10 years before his idea was brought to reality.
A few years after studying experimental animation in California Institute of the Arts hillenburg met Joe Murray- the creator of the series New Life Rocco - at the animation festival. Murray offered Hillenburg a job as a director on the series. While working on The New Life of Rocco, Hillenburg met the screenwriter Martin Olson who saw his comic The Intertidal Zone. Olson liked the idea and suggested that Hillenburg create an animated series about marine life. He came up with a character called SpongeBob SquarePants, which inspired the TV series of the same name. Shortly after Rocco's New Life ended in 1996, Hillenburg began working on SpongeBob SquarePants.
Hillenburg used the design of some of the characters from his comic book when creating the animated series. He created the image of SpongeBob's "grumpy next door neighbor" in the form of an octopus, aiming to emphasize the creature's large, bulbous head and Squidward's inflated ego. He said: "Octopuses have the same big and bulging head, and Squidward thinks that he is therefore an intellectual, of course, since he has a large onion-like head." Hillenburg gave Squidward six tentacles; according to him, "it was actually just easier in terms of animation to portray him with six legs instead of eight." Animated series writer and framing artist Vincent Waller said:
Squidward is difficult to draw, he has a very strange head shape. Luckily, his emotions are pretty even, but portraying a really large amount of his emotions is not an easy task. His nose breaks everything in half, so it's always like, "OK, how am I going to work with this and make it readable?" .
Hillenburg considered introducing jokes related to Squidward's ink release into the series, but ultimately abandoned the idea because "it always looks like he's defecating in his pants" (even though he doesn't have any).
Despite the character going by the name "Squidward", there is controversy as to whether he is an octopus or a squid, due to conflicting claims by Hillenburg and the official Nickelodeon website. Hillenburg named him Squidward because the name "Octoward" in the voice of Squidward's voice actor Roger Bumpass "just didn't work". The sound of Squidward's footsteps was created by rubbing a heating pad. The steps of the rest of the main characters were voiced by the noisemakers of the series. Sound designer Geoff Hutchins stated that footstep sounds "helped to communicate which character was moving and which surface they were walking on". Bumpass pitched the idea of having Squidward ride a ligerade; Bumpass owns such a bike himself, which he rides around the city of Burbank, California. Bumpass described it as his "little inside joke".
Voice acting
Squidward was voiced by actor Roger Bumpass, who voiced several other SpongeBob SquarePants characters, including Squidward's mother. While creating the series and recording its pilot episode in 1997, Hillenburg and creative director Derek Drumont also held auditions to voice roles on the series. Lawrence, who had worked with Hillenburg and Drumont on Rocco's New Life, was originally chosen by Hillenburg to voice. Hillenburg invited Lawrence to audition for the voices of all the characters in the series. Instead of Squidward, Hillenburg ultimately decided to give Lawrence the role of Plankton, the main villain of the series.
According to Bumpass, Squidward was "a very nasal, monotonous type of guy". According to him, the character became interesting to voice because of "his sarcasm, and then his frustrations, and then his apoplexy, and so he became a wide range of emotions". SpongeBob's voice actor Tom Kenny, describing Bumpass' recordings of his role in the studio, said, "I love looking at Roger... He's right next to me." Bumpass was praised by some of the series' crew for his acting and likeness to the character. Kenny called Bumpass "brilliant" and said "[he's] kind of like Squidward". Screenwriter Kent Osborne said, "I remember thinking about how often Roger talks and acts like Squidward. That's why it's such a good voice - it's so connected to it." However, Bumpass said, “I am not him and he is not me, but what I had to do for him and what I was allowed to do for him makes him like me. It suits my special abilities and skills very well. So for that matter, yes, he is me, but I'm not the moody, sarcastic, underachieving sort of guy that he is. He easily loses heart, I say.
Squidward's voice has been compared to that of actor Jack Benny. Kenny said, "I think there's something very funny about this non-loyal-to-nobody-Jack-Benny-type of character that Roger Bumpass does such a great job voicing Squidward." Arthur Brown, author Everything I Need to Know, I Learned from Cartoons!, said that Squidward "voiced very much like Jack Benny's voice." Bumpass dismissed the comparisons, saying "Jack Benny, no. Squidward has received positive reviews from critics and fans. Actor Tom Kenny, who voiced SpongeBob, called Squidward his favorite character on the show. Film critic A. O. Scott of The New York Times said in his review of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie that Squidward is one of his favorite supporting characters on the show along with Sandy Cheeks and Mrs. Pouffe. He wrote, "I was sorry to see [them] pushed to the curb." Also, in the same publication, television critic Joyce Millman said that Squidward has "the nasal bitchiness of Paul Lunde and the artistic pretensions of Felix Unger". Millman further wrote, "Hmm, Squidward is one of the gay squids, I think."
Band Geeks, an episode of the animated series' second season that focuses on Squidward, is often cited by many critics and fans as one of the show's best episodes. Journalist from The Washington Post Michael Kavna appreciated Band Geeks as the fifth best episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. In his review, Kavna wrote, "The combination of Squidward's artistic endeavors in the face of goading, humiliation, and the relentless ruthlessness of mediocrity makes this a childish episode that adults can truly appreciate." After receiving a less positive reception, Squidward was included in the list of "The 10 Worst TV Fictional Characters of 2012" compiled by common sense media. Journalist Sierra Filucci said that the character's selfishness is his "worst crime", calling Squidward "an average and obnoxious cashier at the Krusty Krab", and said that "[he] is only good when he wants something".
On the 39th Daytime Emmy Awards in 2012, Bumpass was nominated for his voice of Squidward in the Outstanding Voice Actor in an Animated Series category, becoming the first cast member to receive a nomination in that category. The award was won by June Foray of The Garfield Show. Bumpass stated that he was proud of the nomination certificate he received, but that "there was really no competition because one of the other nominees was June Foray, and she is the queen of the animation world... There was no chance for any of the other three guys. One of the most controversial characters in the animated series about the adventures of SpongeBob is Squidward. Squidward Quincy Tentacle - that's exactly what his full name sounds like - an octopus, but some confuse it with a squid, obviously because you can't count eight tentacles - there are only six of them. The animators of the series explained this artistic decision by the fact that with eight tentacles, Squidward would have looked too bulky. And so - always toned and even skinny, which perfectly complements his character, Squidward manages well with the help of six tentacles.
Squidward was unlucky with his place of residence. Let his cute house of an unusual shape be both comfortable and interesting, but he managed to settle down between the houses of Patrick and Sponge! It is for this reason that various troubles constantly occur - friends interfere with his sleep, rest and, in general, live. In addition, the couple also demand friendship from Squid, which in itself is unthinkable. The octopus has to cross paths with Sponge regularly - they work in the same establishment, the Krusty Krab diner, but Squidward is at a lower level and holds the position of cashier. It must be said that this character hates his work and is constantly chirping, now and then plunging into reading magazines, sleeping, or simply doing other things at his workplace.
This is the whole Squidward - against the backdrop of the ever cheerful, cute and restless characters of the animated series, this six-fingered inhabitant of the seabed seems like a real alien. And this is natural - after all, his mood never rises, he is full of cynicism, sarcasm and anger towards the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom around him. The only person Squidward has a positive attitude towards is himself. Yes, this character is not without narcissism - in fact, he adores himself and is constantly trying to become famous so that the world knows about his genius. The path to this, as Squidward sincerely believes, lies through his artistic talent. In the animated series, you can see many times how the octopus plays the flute, or tries to take part in a singing competition, become an actor or a sculptor. Of course, because art is the right path for Squidward, and the fact that he does not succeed in this field does not bother him: there will still be. After all, he is a refined nature! In the animated series, by the way, you can sometimes see him immersed in an ordinary world full of ordinary things, such as Krabby Patties, and genuinely enjoys it - but still denies it to the public.
Another disadvantage in the character of Squidward is envy. His eternal enemy is fellow student Squillam, who has succeeded in life and is a rich, respected octopus in society. Squidward often tries to reach the level of his foe and teach him a lesson, to show him that he is also not made with a finger, however, as a rule, Squid does not succeed and he once again becomes a target for jokes and ridicule.
In the animated series, you can meet the Squidward family, with whom our hero does not have the easiest relationship, which is not surprising - because he considers himself much higher and better than all these townsfolk.
You will undoubtedly be pleased with a few facts from the life of Squidward, which you might not have guessed:
- Squidward's trademark is his laugh, which was first produced by voice actor Roger Bumpess;
- Squidward ranks second after the main character of the animated series in terms of the frequency of appearance in the series - 278 out of 332;
- In almost every episode, Squidward tries to avoid walking with Sponge and Patrick - and in one he even hides from them in the refrigerator;
- Squidward's birthday is August 6, 1962;
- For all the series of the animated series, Squidward tried his hand at playing the clarinet, radio DJing, dancing, sculpting, drawing, and even appeared as a TV presenter;
- Squidward is the only character who has never had a romantic interest.
