Military ranks in the navy in ascending order. The rank of naval captain, what do the first, second and third ranks mean Cap 2nd rank

Captain 2nd Rank Larchuk S.A. Graduated from the St. Petersburg Nakhimov School in 1994.

The details of the fleeting naval battle between ships of the Black Sea Fleet and Georgian fast boats that occurred near the coast of Abkhazia in the early days of the military conflict in South Ossetia are known.
On the morning of August 10, a group of Russian Navy ships left the port of Novorossiysk and headed for Sukhumi (Abkhazia). On board two large landing ships there were 500 peacekeepers with military equipment and equipment. They were accompanied by two escort ships, including the Mirage small missile ship. At the same time, five fast Georgian boats equipped with anti-ship missiles came out from the port of Poti to meet them.
“Vesti” reconstructed the further development of events literally minute by minute.
18:39. Russian radar reconnaissance detects several high-speed naval targets on a combat course towards the formation of our ships.
18:40. The enemy boats approached to a critical distance. The command to open warning fire comes from the flagship Caesar Kunikov. An anti-aircraft missile was fired from one of the ships, which fell between the Georgian boats. But they increase speed and try to reach the so-called “dead zone”, where missile weapons are useless. The small missile boat "Mirage" receives an order to destroy the enemy.
18:41. The Mirage commander gives the command "Volley!" The first missile hit the target. A few seconds later - the second one. The flight time to the Georgian boat "Tbilisi" is 1 minute 20 seconds. The distance between opponents is about 25 kilometers.
The first missile hits the engine room of the boat "Tbilisi", the second - the wheelhouse. There was a strong flare on the radar for 30 seconds, which means the complete destruction of the target, accompanied by a large release of thermal energy.
18:50. The Mirage commander gives the command to change position. The ship moves towards the shore at high speed, makes a turn and returns to its combat course. The radar shows only 4 targets. One of them, a Georgian boat, has increased its speed and is approaching our ship. The distance to the target is 15 kilometers. "Mirage" fires a salvo from the "Osa" anti-aircraft complex. The missile hits the side of the Georgian boat, which immediately slows down and tries to leave the line of fire. The remaining Georgian ships leave the battle, turning sharply in the opposite direction.
19:28. After checking the sea space, the Mirage takes its place in the ranks of ships heading to Sukhumi. From the report to the flagship: “Of the five targets, one was destroyed, one was damaged, three left the battle. Missile consumption: anti-ship - two, anti-aircraft - one, no casualties among personnel. No damage to the ship.”
Let us recall that NATO sent its group of warships to the Black Sea and is showing increased interest in the movement of Russian Navy vessels. Western journalists are closely following the maneuvers of Russian ships. So, the other day an incident occurred when journalists from one of the Western news agencies reported that “the Russian missile cruiser Aurora and two missile boats dropped anchor in the port of Sukhumi.”
Meanwhile, the Rosbalt news agency reports that the cruiser-museum continues to remain permanently moored near the Petrogradskaya embankment of the Neva in St. Petersburg. And the territorial waters of Abkhazia included a group of warships of the Russian Navy consisting of landing and missile ships, including the missile cruiser "Moskva".

Among the ship commanders who received awards were five officers, graduates of the Nakhimov School of different years. Increased combat readiness, courage, the ability to endure serious hardships and being far from home and loved ones - this is what distinguishes those who have chosen the profession of a sailor. Those who daily lift nets aboard a ship and those who cram the charter of maritime service can rightfully call themselves sailors and servants of the water element.

If you are overwhelmed by the dream of the water surface, have good health and dream of becoming a sailor, it is enough to take a year-long course at a maritime school. A more serious specialty of a naval officer is acquired in special maritime educational institutions. Official sailors, as a military unit, appeared in the 17th century along with the creation of the Russian Navy, the forces of which, without a doubt, played a special role in the history.

It is interesting that the first marines appeared during the time of Peter the Great, who ordered the creation of the first regiment of this kind on the basis of the Baltic Fleet.

Marines

Marines are one of the most elite and significant troops of the navy, requiring serious military training and being involved in special operations related to the water element and the protection of the state's maritime borders. Marines are a kind of universal soldiers, the characteristics of whose service dictate the need to perform a wide variety of tasks, ranging from participation in naval battles and boarding enemy ships, to airborne landings to perform special operations on land.

The scope of their operations expanded over time from simple guard duty on the country's border to special operations involving long crossings of water spaces and the abolition of enemy anti-landing forces. Not only military operations are carried out without participation, these troops were involved in the Russian-Turkish battles, won numerous victories in the war with France, during the Great Patriotic War they took part in operations related to the defense of Leningrad and Stalingrad, fought for Murmansk and Odessa, reached the very Berlin and continued their journey as liberators of many European states.

Unfortunately, this is where the history of the Marines in the Soviet Union ends: this unit was restored as an active unit only in 1960.

Marines today serve in absolutely all units of the Russian Navy, are equipped with the most modern weapons, have special equipment and state-of-the-art installations at their disposal.

Sailors

The concept of a sailor is broader than a marine. Sailors are all those people who work or serve (watch) on sea vessels. Moreover, it’s funny, but it’s not necessary for a sailor to go to sea; it’s enough just to be a member of the crew or be listed as support personnel.

Usually navigators, pilots, captains or sailors of sea vessels are called sailors. Sailors are both those who carry out combat duty on military ships and those who carry out transport operations by sea.

A more precise concept - a military sailor - is those people who undergo military service or serve under a contract on military ships. They are not called upon to carry out special operations and participate in combat operations only as part of combined arms formations of the navy.

The rank of captain belongs not only to the ground forces, but also to the naval forces. In the Russian army it is also used in the air force, but it became widespread precisely in the navy.

Taking into account the hierarchy in the ground forces, it is possible to draw a correspondence between their ranks and the naval ranks. However, this is quite difficult for beginners to do. The rank of captain in the naval forces refers to officers of the senior rank, and it is also divided into ranks.

History of the origin of the title

Captain as a rank was introduced during the reign of Peter the Great, after the emperor returned from a trip to foreign countries. This event occurred at the beginning of the 18th century, but a few years later the division of captain into ranks was abolished.

Since then, during the time of tsarist rule, a captain of the first rank had a slightly modified title; it sounded like “fleet captain.” In fact, practically nothing has changed in the functioning of the army, only the names of individual elements of the structure have changed. At the same time, the concepts of captain and colonel managed to merge, so the title “captain of colonel rank” was present. It is worth noting that this approach is optimal from the point of view of understanding which rank in the ground forces corresponds to a particular rank in the navy.

In the mid-fifties of the same century, the captain's ranks were again restored. Moreover, an age limit was even established, that is, a maximum period during which a particular serviceman had the right to occupy the position of captain of the first rank. The maximum number of years was 55, but this limitation applied only to this rank. A captain, for example, of the second rank could remain in this rank indefinitely.

When the communists came to power and the time of the Soviet Union came, another rank was established, which related to engineers who, like others, carried out ship service. “Engineer of the first rank” was also assigned to this title. It was assigned only to those military personnel who were engaged in engineering and were on amphibious personnel. Other military personnel were given the rank of colonel.

Find out: The rank of senior sergeant in the Russian Armed Forces, how to get it

The army of many foreign countries uses the rank of captain. However, in order to avoid repetition, a modified name is often used. It sounds like "captan" because that is how it is read in English and other languages derived from Latin.

On ships, sailors and military personnel of lower rank may call the captain by the abbreviation “cap.” Of course, this is not provided for in the military regulations, but a similar trend is being observed more and more often. For the most part, this is a tradition or custom among naval personnel. As many experts say, if on a ship the captain is called “cap,” this is evidence of close friendly and comradely relationships between crew members.

Correspondence of naval ranks to the ranks of the ground forces

Many people wonder what captain of the first rank is, what is the rank in the ground forces, and how to relate them. It turns out that this rank corresponds to the rank of colonel. On the shoulder straps of a captain of the first rank, you can see the obvious differences from this rank of the ground forces. Accordingly, a captain of the second rank is the equivalent of a lieutenant colonel, and a captain of the third rank is equivalent to a major.

The question often arises, which rank is higher - captain or major? If we are talking about the ground forces, then a major is definitely higher than a captain, since the first belongs to the senior officer corps, and the second to the junior officer corps.

If the fact that the captain belongs to the navy is taken into account, then it is necessary to clarify what rank the captain has, since seniority will depend on this factor. As already mentioned, major corresponds to the most junior captain rank in the navy.

A captain of the first and second rank will be higher than a major in the ground forces, and a captain of the third rank will be equal in rank to him.

For still very young military personnel, it remains a mystery what rank is after captain in the naval forces. The rank of captain is a rank that refers to the senior officer on a ship. All three ranks mean that the officer who holds them is in the senior ranks.

Find out: What military ranks were there in the Tsarist Army of Russia?

Next comes the highest level of the Russian army, and the first step is the rear admiral. In the ground forces, this rank corresponds to the rank of lieutenant general or major general. The fact is that there is an unequal number of ranks in the senior officer corps in these types of troops, so it is quite difficult to answer this question accurately.

Therefore, when asked what rank comes after captain, we can say with certainty that next come admirals, who, in turn, are also divided into several types according to seniority.

Navy captain's shoulder straps

The shoulder straps of a captain of the 3rd rank look similar to the shoulder straps of a major, with the exception of the color scheme. The parameters of the shoulder insignia of military personnel of this rank are as follows:

  • there are two gaps on the shoulder straps, which are indicated by two parallel straight lines of golden yellow color;
  • strictly between these stripes is the only star that is inherent in this title;
  • the diameter of the single star is 2.2 cm;
  • the distance from the edge of the shoulder strap is 6 cm;
  • There is no data on the distance between the stars for this rank, since the star is in a single copy.

The shoulder straps of a captain of the 2nd rank correspond to the appearance of the shoulder straps of a lieutenant colonel. The parameters of the shoulder insignia of this rank are as follows:

  • captain of the second rank, whose shoulder straps differ in appearance from the previous rank only in the number of stars, also have two yellow gaps on a grayish-blue background;
  • on each shoulder strap there are two stars, which are at the same distance from each other;
  • the diameter of each star is, similar to the captain of the third rank, 2.2 cm;
  • the distance at which the stars are located from the edge of the shoulder strap is 3.5 cm;
  • there is also no provision between the stars of a captain of the second rank, since they are at the same distance in relation to each other.

The shoulder straps of a captain of the first rank in appearance correspond to the rank of colonel in the ground forces. The parameters of his shoulder insignia are as follows:

  • there are three stars on each shoulder strap;
  • the diameter of each star, compared with previous ranks of senior officers, remains unchanged and is 2.2 cm;
  • the distance at which the stars are located, counting from the edge of the shoulder straps, is the same as for a captain of the second rank, 3.5 cm;
  • since a certain distance separates the third from the first two stars along the shoulder strap, the interstellar space parameter is present in this case and amounts to 3.5 cm.
