Richard Rom asks me: "You do do you want to come here?" And I told him: "No. I don't want to do it, Maybe you have a job here?" And he told me: "Well, let's go to the pub." We meet the head of the department, Richard was also there, and these two Richards bring me to the pub, buy me a beer. Richard Rome says: "You probably have a portfolio? The first work in MDM was a sculpture of a woman. There was a model of 30 centimeters on the table. They told me: “We need to blind the same, only so that it is 2 meters 10 cm. What do you need for this?” I say: "First, paper and pencil, draw proportions." So I started, they didn’t ask me for any documents, nothing. We just signed confidentiality papers. But now we can talk about it, the exhibition took place. The artist's name is Kees Tyson. In 2002, he took the Turner Prize, which is organized by three galleries: Miro, White Cube (this is a powerful international gallery) and Saatchi. This is the local mafia.

Tyson didn't even talk to us. All the workers were kicked out when this man came. He told the manager what he didn't like and what needed to be changed. And it was a broken phone: you return to the workshop, and the manager tells you according to the artist.

So I made a sculpture for Tyson 2 meters 10 - a pregnant woman with three children. Then they did an exhibition of contemporary grotesques in the Shoreditch area, a semi-closed show, apparently for very rich people ... As I understand it, this exhibition did not sell out with him. Maybe it's my fault. But I began to understand that the world's artists themselves do nothing with their hands, even the sketches are made by the company for them. Then I read in the Guardian about this system that there are several companies, but personally I only worked with MDM.

In general, I do not make 100% of the products. Only the sculptural part: I sculpt how it will look, and then other people take off the mold, and still others do the plastic. There are people who paint, I sometimes paint myself, but rarely. There are only eight of us in the company. I remember making rusty armor for Clash of the Titans. There was a flying god of the underworld - I later saw in the film that it was completely retouched on the computer, this armor is almost invisible, and we sculpted every detail. Then they made angels for the Doctor Who series. There in New York there were such stone statues that conquer Manhattan - and here is a woman with a child, a child, though I didn’t make it, but I sculpted a woman.

For Robert Allsop, I collaborated with Alexandra Byrne, who is famous for winning an Oscar for Elizabeth. When the second part of "300": "Rise of empire" was filmed, I personally made all the armor for Alexandra. True, the Spartans are not three hundred, but much less - only eight different types costumes, and then they will be reproduced on a computer. When we started working with Alexandra, they brought us comics. Not enough, just three pictures. I made some ideas, and then she began to change them: “Let's be a little shorter here, a little longer here, a little more here, a little less here.” She starts to move, as in Photoshop, only she moves the live material.

I was recently checking my inbox and discovered that I sent a letter to Tussauds four years ago. They unsubscribed that they like my work, but, unfortunately, they are not recruiting now, and therefore they will keep my CV in a file. This is such a standard reply that everyone writes. I was upset that I was not given a job and forgot about it. Bombed a project for Guinness, which is now in a museum in Dublin - such a wooden pint with a video of how this pint was made - there is me on the video. It's called Guinnes - The Story of More.

After this Guinness I get a letter from Tussauds: "Are you still interested in the job?" I give up yes. Three years have passed! I went to an interview, and I already had a rich portfolio, with famous names and artists, and cinema, and foundries. In Tussauds, they first give you a two-week exam: you sculpt a portrait, and at the exam they look at the level, whether they take you or not. I sculpted Angela Merkel, just a face without hair. For hair, there is a hair and coloring deportation - there are about 30 girls who individually insert each hair after hair into wax. After the exam, they took me to Tussauds, and now I mainly sculpt bodies. I have a fairly low position, not a junior, of course, because I am paid as a senior. But there is a long hierarchy. The juniors process the wax, then there is the sculptor, then the "head scalper" - the one who sculpts the wax heads.

After the head scalper comes the “signor scalper”. They also sculpt heads, but more high-quality and complex portraits, for example, Asian faces. There thinner features and harder to catch the resemblance. I was just sculpting a Chinese, a famous punk star, who in the photographs is always in a white cap with a red star, his eyes are blindfolded with a red flag. In China, he is famous, but here no one knows him either. After “sineor” comes “principal-scalptor”, his task is to make it look like. I cannot reveal secrets, but there is a clear technology by which a similarity is obtained as in a photograph. And then there is the most important “principal-principal”. He signs the work and checks the quality.

Sculptors who work in London, a maximum of a hundred people. Basically, these are the British who graduated from Wimbledon College of Art, someone from Saint-Martens. Someone did not study anywhere at all, but by some miracle got a job first in one place, and then learned to work. In principle, I didn’t finish anything either, but I was taught in Minsk for eight years. These works themselves are not quoted in London, but compared to the British, my school is good.

Eight years, from Monday to Friday, to engage in drawing, composition and sculpture - this is only a dream for many. Our artists would be here!
