Today, the film "Hostages" is released in Russian distribution. This is a picture of my friend the director Rezo Gigineishvili. The plot is based on real events: In 1983, a group of young talented guys from the best Georgian families tried to hijack a plane from Tbilisi to Turkey. I remember when I was a teenager I was ashamed to talk about it. The whole horror was that I did not understand where the truth was, but I felt that it could not be unambiguous.

It is difficult to talk about the events of that November and today. After the guys were shot, in Georgia, where everyone - through a handshake - is familiar and dear to each other, this story was equated with a national tragedy. And as in the best traditions of ancient tragedies, the heroes remained heroes, regardless of their actions.

There were attempts to tell about that capture. But for more than three decades no one dared to imagine scary story in all its monstrous ambiguity.

I am convinced that we are all woven from some kind of fears and complexes, which we not only acquire during our lives - many of them are genetically and historically embedded in us. When you were making this film, did you work through your fears to some extent as well?

First of all, I was driven by the desire not to harm and not to use the material for the sake of my creative ambitions. I felt a responsibility to those people who experienced a real tragedy. Because, as you yourself know, this topic is still relevant in Georgia. I even imagined you and thought: how to shoot so that you, after looking at the picture, understand my sincerity, my grief and regret about what happened. We tried to recreate all those events with the utmost delicacy and respect.

We’ll talk about this later, but first, tell us about your fears: you once said that you compared yourself to these guys, hijackers.

I had to remember my youth and analyze what happened in the past. For example, my feelings when I first returned from abroad. I remember the feeling of embarrassment and the desperate desire to please any foreigner who then came to the Soviet Union. And at some point I wanted to understand: why am I so not free in communication? Why am I afraid to openly express what I think? I remember my dad, who was a very courageous person: in the crazy 1990s, when everyone had machine guns, he could shield one of his friends with himself. But at the same time, I remember exactly how he was afraid to speak out in public in the 2000s. And I understand that in principle it is not normal. At some point, I seriously began to worry that my children, who quite often watch Soviet cartoons and listen to wonderful Soviet songs broadcast on all TV channels, will have the feeling that everyone in the Soviet Union was white and fluffy and lived the way they sang: “Smiling will make everyone brighter.” We were proud of the achievements of our talented athletes, musicians, artists, but they also overcame a lot of difficulties and a lot of things were forbidden to them. I want my children not to romanticize that time and understand: one thing is the memory of a bygone youth, and quite another is a system for which there can be no nostalgia.

We have known each other for a long time and very well. I watched the filming process, I saw what difficulties you faced and what obstacles you had to overcome in order for the film to come out. Why is this picture so important to you? Did you feel it was some serious directorial luck? Or did you just want to tell that story by all means?

I think it all started in childhood: somehow, closer to the night, I saw the mother of one of the hijackers in our kitchen - she was whispering to my mother. Although these were already perestroika times, the tradition of whispering in the kitchen has been preserved. The fact is that parents of hijackers long years they were not informed about the execution of the sentence: they were rather cynically hinted that their children seemed to be alive and scattered in various special colonies Soviet Union. My parents went to look for them, and no one, including my mother, could deprive them of hope and say directly that these are all illusions, there is no need to waste time and energy on a meaningless search. Because only this hope, extended in time, saved them, helped them come to terms with the loss. If at all you can live with it. Probably, in my subconscious, that one was somehow deposited night talk, at least I still remember the half-closed door to the kitchen. And then, when I began to get acquainted with the details of the case, to study archival materials, the story simply captured me. I didn’t even think about what a cool movie this could turn out to be. It was important for me to understand all the details of the process, to study all the interrogations and testimony. As it turned out, nice young people with excellent prospects in life, and some who have already realized themselves in the profession, like Gega Kobakhidze, for example, made this fatal mistake? They not only paid with their lives, but crippled the lives of their parents, killed and injured many innocent passengers and crew members. I thought about it more and more and at some point I felt that the story was controlling me and the process was pulling not only me, but also many other people. I saw with what zeal the artists went into work and literally passed this tragedy through themselves. I watched them grow as individuals. Therefore, it was a happiness for me to come every day to the set and overcome all the difficulties that arose on our way. It was an exciting experience.

I still want to return to the hijackers who became the heroes of your film. In my opinion, the cognitive dissonance that this tragedy causes is as follows. On the one hand, by the standards of both that time and the present, they are terrorists. On the other hand, they are so beautiful, so talented, like the heroes of Bertolucci's films, and it is impossible not to fall in love with them. A terrorist, as we imagine him today, is a person who goes to his death with joy. He is against life. And those guys, in fact, decided on what they decided on, for the sake of life. And that changes everything. I know you don't romanticize that story...

I see here a connection with ancient tragedy and worry that life forced them to make a fatal mistake. But violence was committed, and in fact we still got a terrorist attack. An innocent passenger on a plane whose life is in danger does not care what drives the hijackers.

- In what way do you sympathize with them then?

I have studied the lives of these young people for a long time. I have a good idea of ​​their parents. I know the mother of one of the hijackers, I love her very much, she reminds me of my mother. The whole horror lies in the fact that the invaders were not some kind of dregs of society, these are people from our circle: a doctor, an actor, students ... These are people who are understandable to me, who, together with my older comrades, composed songs, painted pictures - and suddenly they get on the plane and do the irreparable. What prompted them to do so? This is important to analyze and understand. At least in order not to idealize that system of total lawlessness anymore. Not every person can reasonably evaluate something in conditions of lack of freedom. The historical moment, the circumstances of the time cannot be discounted. Remember the 1990s: you and I have common acquaintances who then committed very unsightly acts. But two decades have passed, and they are now ... In general, I don’t know more peace-loving people. Time, context also determine our consciousness. Therefore, I condemn vices, and do not give characteristics to people. In the same way, I worry about the family of the killed pilot, and for those dead passengers with whom I could also be friends and communicate.

Your film has caused heated discussions. Many (including myself) believe that this is a serious big movie. And one of the main arguments of the opponents is that you did not delve into the inner motives of these guys, you distanced yourself from them, because you wanted to be objective.

It’s ridiculous for me to answer, because it’s unlikely that these viewers studied all the circumstances of the case as closely as I did ... Cinema is an area of ​​\u200b\u200bemotions and halftones, each hero in the general group has his own face, his own state. And for me, the psychological truth is extremely important. I am sure that all these nuances and different shades of feelings will be noticeable to a sensitive viewer. Believe me, I know what dramaturgy is, I know how to captivate the audience with notions, tricks. But here I am referring to that part of it that is able to analyze and observe life, and not wait for hints and simplifications. Of course, I have my own attitude, but it is important for me not to dictate it to the viewer, but to do everything so that he has his own opinion while watching.

- And it occurs, and it's different for everyone. What is it connected with?

I noticed that people who directly knew the participants in the events and were in this circle, social stratum, accept the picture. We saw the stewardess at the Moscow premiere, the head of the capture group, for example, and the navigator Gasoyan, who fired at the plane. On the other hand, Georgy Tabidze, the son of a real hijacker, plays his father in our film, his mother and Natela Machavaniani, Gegi's mother, and the girl who jumped out of this plane were at the show. And all these people understood what they were talking about. But those who claim to be involved in this story and want to indicate their importance at its expense do not like the film, because they do not see on the screen what they themselves invented. He is not liked by those who fell under the influence of Soviet propaganda, which represented these people as “majors”, “golden youth”. It is also not accepted by those who fell under the influence of another propaganda, from the time of Gamsakhurdia: they are ready to consider anyone who opposed the system, no matter in what way, a hero and a fighter for freedom.

The Tellurride festival in Colorado, known as the Oscars' launching pad and which selects only 20 films from around the world, hosted three additional screenings of Hostages. This is a very big victory, a breakthrough. Alejandro González Iñárritu and other masters whom you adore appreciated the picture highly. And everyone said that she had, by all cinematic standards, a huge chance to win the Oscar. Why do you think the Georgians didn't nominate her for an Oscar?

I thought that I would release the picture in Georgia, that it would be first of all a Georgian picture. But in Tbilisi there is, unfortunately, I don’t know what to call it, a kind of snobbery that did not allow most of the country’s leading filmmakers to perceive the picture and at least respect the work of a huge number of their colleagues. This is partly due to the fact that in Moscow I am Georgian, and in Georgia I am Russian. And I was accused of putting some Russian money into the budget of the picture. Although I can’t understand what nationality has to do with it if we are talking about financing a picture. They did not notice that there was both Polish money and money from the Georgian cinema center.

- And your personal money too.

And my money, they all knew that very well. But I personally felt the rejection for the first time, and, of course, it was unpleasant for me. But let's not forget that the picture, which was nominated for an Oscar from Georgia (" scary mother» Anna Urushadze.- "Kommersant Style"), also has success: she had two grand prix - in Locarno and Sarajevo. And I will sincerely be happy if she gets on the Oscar shortlist, and I wish her good luck.

Let's get back to The Hostages. Everyone sees something different in this movie, right? And the Russians can also see a story about themselves in it. Do you think this is a politically relevant movie for Russia?

It seems to me that if the picture is noticeable, if it is discussed and everyone has different interpretations which means it is relevant. But I am not a politician to discuss its political relevance.

According to your great admirer Dmitry Bykov, this film allowed you to get not only into a number of serious directors, but also into the camp of liberals.

I have not read Bykov about the camp of liberals, I do not understand at all from what moment liberal is an offensive word.

Not offensive: Bykov is delighted with the film. He thinks that you, a person from the same party as the hijackers, spoke in a way that was not party-like at all. Because he touched on the topic of freedom-non-freedom, which is taboo for many.

I care about rights and freedoms, but why should I limit myself to any camp? I wanted this picture to be relevant both for Georgia, and for Russia, and for America, so that the story would be universal. I don't care what state, society my children will live in and how we will generally be responsible for our choice and for what we love. Are we going to fight for it or are we going to discuss who is in which camp? I observed many worthy people - both in the government and in the opposition. Both in Georgia and here. Personal responsibility is important.

- By the way, a question about what is happening around. Do you have citizenship?

Of course, I have it.

And how does it manifest itself? For example, I can’t calmly watch how architectural monuments are being demolished. I can go out and shoot someone for it...

I wouldn't want to shoot anyone. My position is that a creative person should pay attention to those who are in the minority, to the problems of offended, humiliated and powerless people. It is important. Of course I can go out, stand up and say to some valuable architectural monument didn't take it down. But in the same way I can make a movie about this. In general, my civic position is to be a caring person. I do not like to think that life in the country does not depend on me. And I would not like to delegate my rights to other people. Of course, it is also wrong to criticize everything totally. You just have to do your thing, and it is desirable that it does not go far from what you feel.

- Your film is being released in Russia, this seven-year saga is coming to an end, are you happy?

There is no happiness, there is excitement, fatigue, because it is difficult to dive into the material, and it is even more difficult to part with it. Until I start filming new job, I will be in some way his hostage. I really want to get out.

I do not agree with the very formulation of the question. I can say for sure that the work on the most frivolous picture for me is associated with great emotional costs. But now I'm really going to work on a serious topic that worries me a lot, and I hope that everyone will also interpret the new picture, criticize, but not be indifferent.
