"The Burning Bush" is an image known since early centuries Christianity. It symbolically reflects the Old Testament event described in the book of Exodus, when not far from Sinai, near Mount Horeb, the prophet Moses, tending sheep, saw a burning bush, came up to see “why the bush was burning with fire, but was not consumed” (Ex. 3: 2), and God, calling to him from the flames, called to lead the people of Israel from Egypt to the Promised Land. For Christians, this bush, which did not burn in fire, became a prototype Mother of God, which was not scorched by the fire of the Divine at the immaculate conception.

This icon came to Rus' back in 1390 - it was brought to Moscow by Palestinian monks - and was kept in the Annunciation Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. And starting from the 16th century, numerous lists of it began to spread throughout the country, many of which were considered miraculous.

In the secret of such popularity among the people of this image, oversaturated with complex symbolism, perhaps lies the key to understanding the essence religious consciousness our ancestors, which we persistently try to squeeze into the Procrustean bed of our own ideas, greatly flattened by our secular world.

Saints John of Damascus, Theodore the Studite, Patriarch Nikephoros of Constantinople, fathers VII Ecumenical The cathedral described a number of main functions of the icon. And the most popular of their definitions was the explanation of the icon as a story about the events of Sacred history or the life of a saint in pictures (in the words of Basil the Great - “a book for the illiterate”). That is, practically - an illustration, a pious "comic"? But the fact of the matter is that the holy creators of the Orthodox iconographic canon seem to have had something else in mind.

Symbolically showing the spiritual, indescribable phenomena of the heavenly world, the icon elevates the mind and spirit of the person contemplating it into this world, unites it with it, and introduces them to the endless pleasure of spiritual beings surrounding the throne of God. It is a subject of long and in-depth contemplation, a stimulator of spiritual concentration, a path to spiritual ascent. The icon depicts the past, present and future Orthodox world. It is fundamentally timeless and spaceless, in it the unity of the earthly and heavenly is actually realized. The believer finds in it an eternal spiritual cosmos, communion with which is the goal of the life of an Orthodox person.

"The Burning Bush" is oversaturated with symbols and characters Holy Scripture: archangels, apocalyptic tetramorph (four winged apocalyptic creatures, also symbolizing the four evangelists), angels - patrons of the elements, visions of the Old Testament prophets surround the central image of the Mother of God holding the baby Christ in her arms: the heavenly and earthly worlds, uniting according to the plan of the Almighty in an inextricable story of the past , present and future, give birth to the Savior of humanity Jesus Christ from the grace-filled Ever-Virgin Mary.

The image of the Virgin Mary is enclosed in an eight-pointed star formed by two quadrangles - green and red (the natural color of the bush and the color of the flame that surrounded it). Moreover, the symbol of the eight-pointed star itself is also closely connected with the Mother of God and her secret. The eight-pointed star in tradition means eternity, complete stability, going beyond the bounds of the earthly world. This is a sign of paradise, the final transformation, the Heavenly Jerusalem. That is, the icon depicts the spiritual, “Mother of God” cosmos: the Mother of God gathered the whole world around the Eternal Child - the forces of earth and heaven. It is precisely this, collected together, that God intended the universe to be, and it is precisely by this that the chaotic, centrifugal forces of death and decay must be defeated.

Traces of popular veneration of this image remained even in city toponymy: the list of the “Burning Bush” from the Holy Entrance of the Faceted Chamber of the Kremlin was kept in the Moscow Church of the “Burning Bush” until the 20th century; The temple itself was demolished in 1930, but the name remained - Neopalimovsky Lane.

In 1904, with the blessing of John of Kronstadt, his spiritual daughter, Abbess Taisiya (Solopova), founded a monastery in honor of the “Burning Bush” - the Parfenevskaya Hermitage near Cherepovets.

Revered miraculous lists icons "The Burning Bush" are in Perm region, in Ulyanovsk, in Novgorod, in Ukraine - in the Trinity Church of Slavyansk.

The church-wide celebration of this icon on September 4 (September 17 according to the new style) was established in 1680.

Today is September 16 (September 3, old style),

Hieromartyr Anthimus

Hieromartyr Anthimus came from Nicomedia, where he was a bishop. Even in his youth, when passions usually act especially strongly, he was humble, temperate, not angry, active and loving, which is why he was awarded the rank of priest, and then bishop. At that time, the persecution of Christians was especially strong in Nicomedia. St. Anthimus encouraged his flock not to be afraid of torment for the faith, and many of the nobles and royal servants, heeding the voice of the shepherd, openly declared themselves Christians. They were tortured. Among them were Theophilus, Dorotheus, Mardonius, Mygdonius, Peter, Indis, Gorgonius, Zenon, Domna the Virgin, Euthymius and many others. There was a fire in the royal chambers; Christians were suspected of arson, and they began to be exterminated in droves. St. Anthimus considered it necessary to hide in order to save his life for now and to exhort, strengthen and console the persecuted Christians with his messages. With one of the messages of St. Anthima was captured by Deacon Theophilus and presented to King Maximian. The king demanded that Theophilus tell him where Anthimus was hiding. “I cannot betray someone who does so much for the Church,” answered Theophilus and was killed for this. Finally, the time has come martyrdom Saint Anthimus. The place where he was hiding was discovered, and the king sent 20 horse soldiers after him. The saint, having met the soldiers, called them to him, promising to show whom they were looking for. Having treated the soldiers, he said that he was Anfim. The soldiers did not know what to do; they even wanted to leave the saint and say that they had not found him. The saint, not tolerating lies and wanting to suffer for Christ, did not agree to this. The soldiers were baptized. When Anthimus came to the king, the king ordered the instruments of execution to be brought and placed in front of him. “Are you really thinking, king, to frighten me with instruments of execution? - said the martyr to the king. - You cannot frighten someone who himself wants to die for Christ! Execution only frightens the faint-hearted, for whom temporary life is most precious. And more than anything else, I want to move on to God.” The king ordered the saint to be cruelly tortured and then his head to be cut off. St. died Anthimus in 302 under Diocletian.

Martyr Vasilissa

The martyr Vasilissa suffered in 309 in Nicomedia when she was nine years old. When they brought her to the ruler of the city, Alexander, she fearlessly confessed herself to be a Christian, so that everyone was surprised. The ruler at first gently persuaded her to renounce Christ, and then became angry and ordered her to be beaten and flogged with rods. The young martyr bravely endured suffering. The ruler ordered to hang her upside down, and light straw, sulfur, oil and tin under her so that the martyr would suffocate, but did not achieve his goal. Then Vasilisa was put into a fired oven, but she, having created sign of the cross, entered the oven and remained unharmed. Finally, they let hungry lions attack her, but they did not touch her. Then the tormentor fell at the feet of the martyr, asked her for forgiveness and prayers, and was baptized. Vasilisa died peacefully shortly after while praying.

Venerable Theoktist was a companion of St. Euthymius the Great (January 20) and the head of his monastery near Jerusalem. Lived in the 5th century.

Often the mighty of the world This, looking down on Christianity, they cannot understand at all what meekness and humility are, because these concepts are not in the experience of so many people involved in the elements of this world. And the Lord reveals to us great secret human happiness - to be with Him and remember that greatest power, transforming the human heart, calming in any sorrows, giving peace and tranquility, is humility and meekness. This is not weakness - we know how humble, meek people were able to give their lives for their loved ones, for the Fatherland and sacrifice a lot in life. Meekness and humility are not synonymous with weakness - they are synonymous with happiness.
