View Nikon SLR cameras. Which is better Canon or Nikon: all the facts

Not long ago, together with the Photo Monster team, we decided to prepare for you reviews of popular SLR cameras of various brands. Just the other day, Evgeny Kartashov wrote, today I present to your attention a review article about Nikon SLR cameras, since the equipment of this manufacturer is closer to me.

Why Nikon?

Over the past few years, I have owned various DSLR cameras, both Canon and Nikon (Canon 450D, Canon 500D, Canon 50D, Canon 7D, Nikon D60, Nikon D5000, Nikon D90, Nikon D7000, Nikon D700).

It is impossible to say unequivocally what is better and what is worse! Each brand is good in its own way and has both pros and cons. In this review article, I will not describe these points, since each of you must decide for himself what is closer to him.

If you asked me: “Why Nikon”? Then I would probably answer that

  1. Nikon was the first to provide top-end autofocus in a budget FF;
  2. Budget Nikon optics outperform Canon analogues;
  3. Shadows from NEF(RAW) are drawn much better when underexposed;
  4. Nikon NEF files allow for more image manipulation without loss of quality;
  5. Exposure metering is tied to the focal point (in the spot metering mode, budget Canon cameras are not tied to the selected AF point; metering is performed only at the central one)
  6. In general, Nikon's exposure metering module is more advanced; it is RGB, unlike the Canon 7D/5D3. Only 1D X has a similar or slightly better RGB exposure metering, even purely in terms of formal characteristics - 100,000 pixels.
  7. The auto-ISO algorithm is implemented more competently;
  8. Camera JPEG is generally better too;
  9. Work with external flashes has been implemented more correctly.

Historically, in Russia, it turned out that professionals shot with Canon, because, firstly, the optics of this manufacturer were 20 percent cheaper, and secondly, the company organized service centers in our country. When Nikon more or less equalized prices and opened its service centers, the situation evened out. Again, in 2007-2009, Nikon released a large number of new telephoto lenses that surpassed Canon’s counterparts in quality, and updated the line of 24-70 and 70-200 zoom lenses against the already fairly old players in the market from Canon. Not to mention 14-24, which has no analogues at all. But recently Canon has also updated its line and the situation has approximately leveled off.

This competition and struggle for the title of leader will always exist, so it is at least incorrect to say unequivocally that one manufacturer is better than another.

Factors influencing the choice of camera

As Evgeny Kartashov already wrote, before making a choice, you need to decide why you need this SLR camera?

I will not duplicate what Evgeniy wrote, I will simply outline the main points. If you are going to actively engage in photography and develop in this direction, I recommend that you buy a normal monitor, at least with an E-IPS matrix, and calibrate it. Color/shadows in photography are very important, and if you don’t see them on your TN matrix, then such photos will be of no use, you will argue with people that everything is fine with your complexion in the photo, but in reality it may turn out to be not this way.

It is also worth understanding that cheap and cheerful photography will not work. Good optics that produce a good image and hit the target at open apertures cost money, quite a lot of it. The cost of a good portrait lens can reach 50-70 thousand rubles. Of course, you can get by with just good lenses, but that’s also money and 5-10 thousand rubles won’t get by here either. As a rule, a normal portrait lens costs from 10 thousand, a good, more or less bright zoom - from 30 thousand and above.

Camera Nikon D3100

This is Nikon's most budget entry-level DSLR, suitable for amateur photography, easy to use and understand. Equipped with a D-video function that allows you to shoot video in high quality (HD). The 14.2 megapixel matrix makes it possible to work with high-definition images and then print them at high resolution. Very light in weight.

For prof. not suitable for use.

  • Sensor size in MP 14.2 (4608 x 3072);
  • Physical sensor size: 23.1 x 15.4 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • Burst speed: 3 frames/sec;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-3200 (expandable to ISO 12800);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/4000 s;
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Dimensions: 124x96x75 mm;
  • Weight 505g.

I would like to note that the characteristics specified by the manufacturer regarding photosensitivity, in practice, do not quite agree with the numbers. Although it is possible to expand ISO to 12800-25600, it is better not to abuse high ISOs. Working ISO in this type of technology is everything that is not higher than ISO 800-1000. Anything higher will greatly spoil both the color and the picture as a whole. This will be especially noticeable in low light conditions. “Pixel mess”, loss of color, grain, etc. will appear. Therefore, when choosing amateur equipment, do not really trust what is written about ISO 6400, 12800, 25600, etc.

For reference: the same Nikon D700, or Canon 5D2\ 5D3, although it can be used at high ISOs 3200-6400, it is still better not to go above 2000 if we are talking about quality, let alone in the amateur segment for $500.

This can be seen from the results of testing the camera, which you can see.

Camera Nikon D3200

One of Nikon's entry-level budget DSLRs with many megapixels. New. Replaced Nikon D3100. Compared to the D3100, the display was improved, a new processor was installed, changes were also made to the controls, and the Auto ISO algorithm was improved with the ability to set minimum shutter speed thresholds. In general, everything is, of course, good, but it’s not clear why amateurs need so many megapixels.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 24.2 (6016 x 4000);
  • Physical sensor size: 23.2 x 15.4 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • 11-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • Full HD video shooting (up to 1920x1080 at 24 frames/sec) with manual control over exposure parameters;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 12800);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/4000 s;
  • Viewfinder coverage - 95% of the frame;
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Battery capacity: ~540 shots;
  • Dimensions: 125x96x77 mm;
  • Weight 505g.

Unlike the previous model, this camera is equipped with a 24.2 megapixel CMOS matrix, which makes the image quality higher. The camera is also equipped with a smart device that allows you to instantly share pictures and videos with friends.

A detailed camera test can be viewed.

Camera Nikon D5100

An amateur SLR camera, one step higher in class than the 3xxx series line. Also not suitable for professional work.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 16.2 (4928 x 3264);
  • Physical sensor size: 23.6 x 15.6 mm (crop factor 1.5)
  • 11-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • Burst speed: 4 frames/sec;
  • Full HD video recording (up to 1920x1080);
  • Rotating display;

  • Viewfinder coverage - 95% of the frame
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Battery capacity: ~660 frames;
  • Dimensions: 128x97x79 mm;
  • Weight 560g.

Unlike other models, this camera is equipped with a tilt-and-tilt monitor with a variable angle, which simplifies the shooting process. The camera has an extended dynamic range, which allows you to create interesting pictures. The downside is that the camera does not have a separate button for adjusting ISO.

Camera Nikon D5200

This camera, which replaced the D5100, had a greatly improved AF system. Now it is based on the Multi-Cam 4800DX AF sensor, which is well known to fans of the system from the Nikon D7000. The sensor combines 39 autofocus points, 9 of which are cross-type. The exposure metering system has also been updated. To assess illumination, the Nikon D5200 uses a 2016-point sensor capable of distinguishing colors. This is made for more precise definition the scene being filmed when automatic installation exposition.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 24.1 (6000x4000 pixels);
  • Physical matrix size: 23.6 x 15.6 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • 39-point autofocus with 3D tracking (2016-pixel sensor for exposure metering);
  • Burst speed: 5 fps;
  • Video recording Full HD 1920x1080 at frequencies up to 60i or 30p;

  • Battery capacity: ~ 1030 mAh;
  • Dimensions: 129x98x78 mm;
  • Weight 555g.

Camera Nikon D90

An old, good camera that has proven itself over years of trouble-free operation, both among amateurs and advanced amateurs and professionals. The camera is perfect for almost any task. It produces very good color when shooting portraits, unlike new products, where you have to spend more time correcting the skin color, especially in bright/sunny light. The D90 has fewer problems in this regard.

Main technical characteristics:

  • 11-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • Burst speed: 4.5 frames/sec;
  • Video shooting 1280x720;
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/4000 s;
  • Viewfinder coverage - 96% of the frame;
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC;
  • Dimensions: 132x103x77;
  • Weight 620g;

Camera Nikon D300S

Big brother Nikon D90 with a number of improvements. Positioned as a professional camera. I would like to note that if you shoot the same thing under normal conditions, you will not see any difference between the D90 and D300S. It comes down to ergonomics, convenience, AF speed and tenacity, and better protection from dust and humidity.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 12.3 (4288 x 2848);
  • Physical matrix size: 23.6 x 15.8 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • Video shooting 1280x720;
  • Burst speed: 7-8 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 200-3200 (expandable to ISO 6400);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s;
  • Memory cards: CompactFlash, SD, SDHC;
  • Battery capacity: ~ 850 photos;
  • Dimensions: 147x114x74 mm;
  • Weight 938 g.

Camera Nikon D7000

I placed this camera after the D300S, because I think that it is still more professional than amateur. Among the advantages, I would like to highlight fast AF (for AF-c mode), there are 5 delay speeds, many AF points, sane video, many settings and functions, in some ways superior to even the D700 in terms of convenience, 2 memory cards, less noise at high ISOs, than the D90. There is fine adjustment of AF and horizon. Good detail with good lenses. Slightly more comfortable grip than the D90. Excellent detail and contrast, ideal for landscapes and nature photography. Among the minuses are the color when shooting people with pale skin in bright light / in the sun, the halftones become discolored and a carrot tint appears, incorrect matrix metering, the sky is often knocked out, “gray” camera jpeg. In Nikon programs, the ravs often slow down, and it’s more difficult to bring color to mind than with the same D90. Otherwise, the camera is excellent, it performs very well with the 16-85 when shooting landscapes, and is also very good for birds and macro.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 16.2 (4928 × 3264);
  • Physical matrix size: 23.6 x 15.6 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • 39-point autofocus with 3D tracking (Multi-CAM 4800DX with TTL phase detection, fine tuning);
  • Video recording up to 1920 × 1080;
  • Burst speed: 6 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage - 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Battery capacity: ~ 1050 photos;
  • Dimensions: 147x114x74 mm;
  • Weight 780 g.

Camera Nikon D600

This a budget option full-frame DSLR aimed at updating mid-range models. It sits comfortably somewhere between the full-frame D800 and the D7000 format. At the same time, it combines many features from both models. Along with the new 24-megapixel full-frame FX-format sensor, you get 100% viewfinder coverage and the D800's signature 3.2-inch screen. In addition to quite a few features, the D600 has a similar build, including a dual SD card slot like the D7000.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 24.3 (6016 x 4016);
  • 39-point AF system with Multi-CAM4800 autofocus sensor module;
  • Video recording 1920x1080 up to 30fps;
  • Burst speed: 5.5 fps;
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/4000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage - 100% frame
  • Battery capacity 900 photos;
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Dimensions: 141x113x82;
  • Weight 850 g.

Camera Nikon D700

An old professional camera from Nikon.

Very accurate, and most importantly tenacious autofocus and a fast screwdriver, minimum misses.

  • Operating ISOs are higher than any cropped camera.
  • The shadows are drawn very well.
  • Convenient controls, almost everything necessary buttons at hand, there is a built-in flash.
  • Ergonomics, constructive, pleasant to pick up and work with.
  • NEF files are lightweight, it’s nice to work in editors, nothing slows you down.
  • Auto white balance works well, editing pictures is easy and quick (compared to the D7000 on the new matrix)
  • There are no particular problems with color and skin tone, even when shooting in direct sunlight.
  • It has dust and moisture protection, so it’s not scary to shoot in the rain and snow (of course, within reason, with glasses equipped with rubber bands on the bayonet and also having moisture protection).

Flaws:

  • A little heavy (at first), and too heavy for going on vacation with a full set of glasses.
  • Unusable life view.
  • It would not hurt to have 14-16Mp (sometimes there is not enough detail). If it were 16Mp like the D4, it would be ideal.
  • I would like the main control wheel to have program modes U1, U2. (it’s inconvenient to switch between settings banks through the menu)
  • I would like to have a non-software ISO 100

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 12.1 (4256 x 2832);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • 51-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • NO video recording;
  • Burst speed: 5-8 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 200-6400 (expandable to ISO 25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage - 95% of the frame;
  • Memory cards: CompactFlash;
  • Dimensions: 147x123x77;
  • Weight 995 g.

Camera Nikon D800\800E

The first characteristic that catches your eye is a full-frame sensor with an impressive resolution of 36 megapixels, which is twice as much as the flagship D4 model. Based on this parameter alone, the D800 can immediately be classified as a high-end camera. The ISO sensitivity range is 100-6400, expandable to 50-25600, and the D800 takes over from the D4 its 51-point auto-focus system, processor and advanced video mode.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 36.3 (7360 x 4912);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • two versions of the camera: with an AA filter (D800) and without an AA filter (D800E);
  • 2 EXPEED 3 processors;
  • 51 sensors, of which 15 are cross-type with 3D tracking;
  • Full HD video with multi-zone FX and DX mode Full HD (1080p) at 30p, 25p and 24p;
  • Burst speed: 4-5 fps (FX\DX modes);
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 50-25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage - 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: CompactFlash, SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Dimensions: 146x123x82;
  • Weight 1kg.

Nikon D3S camera

Old prof. reportage camera, older brother of the Nikon D700. The main differences from the D700 are ergonomics, speed, and higher operating ISOs.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 12.1 (4256 × 2832);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • 51-point autofocus Multi-CAM 3500FX (15 cross-shaped sensors);
  • Video recording 1280x720 24fps;
  • Burst speed: 9 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 200-12800 (expandable to ISO 25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage - 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: CompactFlash;
  • Dimensions: 160x157x88;
  • Weight 1240g.

Nikon D4 camera

A full-frame camera capable of shooting high-speed bursts in RAW lasting about a hundred frames, a built-in RJ-45 port with the ability to not only transfer data, but also control it, support for XQD memory cards. Will this be enough to beat its main competitor, the Canon EOS 1DX?

This camera boasts bursts at a speed of 11 frames per second and a duration of up to a hundred photos when shooting in RAW format. Another one distinguishing feature- use of XQD memory cards, which are characterized by enormous writing and reading speeds. By the way, Nikon D4 became the first camera to support memory cards of this type, which is not surprising, since Nikon and SanDisk were at the origins of the creation of this format, and only at the final stage Sony acquired the rights to this development.

Not long ago I shot with it when I took paired shots with the D700 VS 5D III and D4. The camera, of course, impressed me after the D700. This is a machine gun that feels very comfortable in the hand and focuses in artificial light faster than you might imagine. And when you start filming in series, you understand why they take money there.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 16.2 (4928 x 3280);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • Carbon fiber and Kevlar composite shutter with a service life of 400,000 cycles;
  • 51-point autofocus Multi-CAM 3500FX;
  • Video recording Full HD (1080p) 50/60 fps at a resolution of 1280x720, 25/30 fps at a resolution of 1920x1080;
  • Burst speed: 11 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-12800 (expandable to ISO 50-204800);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage - 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: XQD and Type I CompactFlash memory cards (UDMA compatible);
  • Dimensions: 160x157x91;
  • Weight 1340g.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would like to summarize everything and highlight a couple of important points to everyone who is going to buy a full-frame (FF) camera.

After purchasing the FF, do not forget to buy normal optics so as not to be upset. If after purchasing FF there is no money left for normal glasses, take a fixed glass for the first time, with all my heart, and, based on my experience, I recommend buying 85/1.8G, or 50/1.8G for the first time (excellent price-result ratio) . Otherwise, from your budget travel zooms, you may be dissatisfied with the picture, moreover, you will remain dissatisfied!

Further, as soon as the opportunity arises, you can safely buy yourself time-tested lenses 70-200 (portraits, sports and everything in a row), 14-24 (landscapes, architecture), 24-70 (reportage), 70-300 (birds), 80-200 (portraits), 85/1.4G (best portrait lens), 20/2.8 (good landscape lens), 24-120\4G (travel zoom is better than 24-85), 16-35 (architecture, landscapes).

To see and feel the difference with cropped cameras, you need to get used to and understand the FF. It is also very advisable to have an understanding of SLR cameras in general and understand what and how to do and where to turn before switching to full frame.

It is advisable to grow up to FF, and not immediately buy it with your first camera because you have extra money. There will be no masterpieces without experience! Also, there will be no masterpieces without knowledge and ability to work in GR (graphics editors).

And remember that the final result will depend not only on the camera and how well and correctly you learned to shoot, but also on your ability to work in a graphics editor.

This article is a continuation of the topic of choosing a SLR camera for amateur photography. The previous article was devoted to Canon EOS SLR cameras, now it’s the turn to consider another equally worthy manufacturer - Nikon.

If we are talking about choosing an amateur DSLR, the price range will most likely be between 25 and 50 thousand rubles. In this price range you can find at least 7 models of Nikon SLR cameras from entry-level amateur to semi-professional, and the differences between the characteristics of “neighboring” models in the line can be negligible, and the difference in price can be very noticeable. To understand all this diversity, you need to sift through a lot of sites with reviews or comparisons. To save your time, I did all this work and share the results in this article.

I did not set out to compare absolutely all the characteristics of the cameras, much less attach any labels like “model A” significantly steeper model B, since it has 15% more focusing sensors." I once came across similar things on one site that automatically evaluated one model compared to another (I don’t remember the address), stupidly comparing numerical characteristics.

Let's first look at the classes of Nikon digital SLRs:

  • "3000th family" (D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300) - cameras for beginner amateur photographers. The simplest and cheapest. They have a basic minimum of bells and whistles; some characteristics are limited by software so as not to compete with older models.
  • "5000th family" (D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500) - cameras for advanced amateurs. In terms of picture quality, they do not differ from the 3000 family, since the filling in them is the same (if we consider devices of the same generation), but continuous shooting is a little faster, the screen is not an ordinary one, but on a rotating bracket, in the most modern models it is touch-sensitive, yes and in general, these cameras have richer functionality than the 3000s.
  • "7000th family" (D7000, D7100, D7200) - equipment for advanced amateurs, allowing professional use. Sturdy dust/moisture-proof housing, ergonomics thought out to the smallest detail, powerful battery and much more - all this puts these devices 1-2 heads above amateur cameras. But they cost accordingly - among the more or less modern ones, only the D7100 model falls into our price category (up to 50,000 rubles).
  • “Three-digit family” (D610, D750, D800, D810) - full-frame cameras of different series (600th, 700th, 800th). Each series has its own main purpose, but we will talk about this in more detail later.
  • “Single family” (D3*, D4*) - professional reportage DSLRs, Nikon flagships.

In this article we will focus on models with a 4-digit index, since they are the most widespread and popular due to good characteristics for their class and relative affordability.

First of all, let's pay attention to the 3000th family

Amateur DSLRs Nikon D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300

Nikon's 3000th family represents the simplest DSLRs, which are aimed primarily at beginner amateur photographers, and simply at those who are buying a camera “for the home, for the family.” Now on sale there are mainly models D3200, D3300, and a little less often the outdated D3100. The very first device in the D3000 family has not been sold in stores for a long time, but they can be found in huge quantities at flea markets.

The differences between the “neighboring” ones in the 3000th family are not particularly large and at first glance are not even noticeable, but if you compare the “extreme” ones, there are still differences. A short list of the main differences is given in the table:

As for the matrix resolution, 10 megapixels is more than enough for amateur photography. Further growth in megapixels does not bring a noticeable improvement in the quality of photographs when viewed on a monitor or printed in a medium-sized format.

The D3300 model does not have a low-pass filter on the matrix. What does this give? A low-pass filter is a “piece of glass” with which the matrix is covered, and the purpose of this “piece of glass” is to smooth the picture to prevent the formation of pixel “steps” on inclined lines, and also to remove moire from photographs. Modern camera models often do not have a low-pass filter, since these problems can be corrected in software on the fly; fortunately, the increased processor power allows this to be done without a visible decrease in operating speed. The absence of a low-pass filter can theoretically make photographs sharper, but this advantage is fully realized only when using good, expensive optics.

A high burst speed is important mostly in reporting, but it can also be useful for amateur photography. For example, someone jumps from a tower into the water (with a bomb! :). If you film this in burst mode, you can clearly trace all phases of the jump - from the moment of lifting off the tower to entering the water. At the same time, it is interesting to observe the change in a person’s facial expression and posture :) The higher the burst speed, the more detailed picture of the event we will get and the more chances we will have to select the “best” photos.

Screen resolution is in demand mainly when manually focusing in LiveView - when shooting video and when shooting photographs with manual focus. Screen resolution has nothing to do with the technical quality of photographs, but with the screen high resolution work is easier and more enjoyable.

The ability to shoot video appeared on Nikon DSLRs starting with the D3100 model, the D3200 is a transitional version in which everything was “finished and perfected,” but video shooting is best implemented in the D3300 (of those listed). It makes it possible to shoot at a frame rate of 60 fps in FullHD resolution, so that you can later make smooth slow-motion video from this. The D3300 also has the ability to connect an external microphone. However, the devices of the 3000 family do not have “hybrid” focusing, which will allow you to automatically keep focus on the subject when shooting video - this is a serious disadvantage that does not make it possible to fully recommend Nikon DSLRs D3*** for those who like to shoot video.

Despite the characteristics “on paper” of professional cameras from 5 years ago, Nikon 3000 family cameras are primarily created for ordinary amateurs who take the lion’s share of shots in auto mode and scene programs. Naturally, Nikon D3000-3300 has manual mode and RAW, which theoretically allow you to achieve professional quality photographs, but when shooting we will encounter a number of limitations.

  • There are few functional buttons, many important settings are transferred to the on-screen menu
  • The settings lack such things as mirror pre-raising and exposure bracketing - this is not critical for amateur photography, but for experienced landscape lovers these things will be missed.
  • There is no aperture repeater - this thing is useful for controlling the depth of field during macro photography and other situations when you need to ensure that the object falls within the depth of field
  • There is no autofocus “screwdriver” - this means that old (does not mean bad!) lenses will only be able to focus in manual mode.

If you dig around, there are probably some other restrictions, but these would be nit-picking. The disadvantages listed above make it clear that the Nikon D3000-3300 is not worth buying for professional photography. This is a purely amateur camera.

Compared to Canon, the 3000 family falls somewhere between the four-digit and three-digit series. Roughly speaking, the Nikon D3300 is better than the Canon EOS 1200D, but in some ways it is inferior to the Canon EOS 700D.

Advanced amateur DSLRs Nikon D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500

The 5000th family in its main characteristics is not much different from cameras of the 3000th family comparable in generation, but they are positioned a class higher. The main consumers in in this case The speakers are amateur photographers who already have some experience and requirements for the functionality of the device are higher than those of ordinary amateurs.

Nikon D5500 is currently the flagship of the 5000 family

The most important advantages of devices of the 5000 family over the 3000 family:

  • Availability of a rotating screen makes it possible to photograph more comfortably from low and high points. The rotating screen is also useful when shooting from a tripod, macro photography, and video shooting. In principle, you can easily live without a rotating screen, but in those situations when it would really be useful, we scold ourselves for saving money and buying a camera with a fixed screen :)
  • Exposure bracketing useful for landscape photography when there is a large difference in brightness between highlights and shadows in the frame. Using the exposure bracketing function, combined with burst shooting, you can quickly and easily “click” source materials (you can even do it without a tripod).
  • White balance bracketing allows you to shoot a series of frames with a smoothly changing white balance, so that you can then select the one where the color rendition is optimal. This mode is valuable only when shooting in Jpeg, since in RAW you can set the balance to any white balance in the editing program during processing.
  • Wider ISO range theoretically, it makes it possible to photograph without moving in the worst lighting, but in practice, the real working ISO of cameras of the 3000th and 5000th families is the same, since the matrices and processors in them are the same. For modern cameras this is approximately ISO1600, with a stretch of 3200. Anything higher noticeably reduces the quality of the image.
  • Availability of Wi-Fi module starting with the D5300 model, it makes it more convenient to transfer photos to a computer, and also allows you to control the camera remotely using a smartphone or tablet with Wi-Fi.
  • GPS module(D5300 only) allows you to record the coordinates of the place where it was taken in EXIF photos. This feature will be greatly appreciated by “traveling bloggers”, since photos posted online will be immediately linked to the map. This feature is useless for home use.
  • Microphone input(starting from the D5100 model) - a big plus if the device will be used for video shooting. The built-in microphone records the sound of autofocus and stabilizer, as well as the sound of wind when shooting outdoors. An external microphone provides better sound recording.
  • Touch screen with focus and touch function(starting with the D5500 model) - another useful innovation that makes shooting in LiveView mode more comfortable. The touch screen is also useful when shooting video.

As you can see, the list of differences is quite significant. This makes Nikon 5000 family devices the optimal choice (from Nikon) if you need a universal camera for all occasions. Naturally, it will take some time to learn all the capabilities and features of the camera, and this will require more effort and time than mastering the D3000 family of cameras.

Within the camera class, the differences are not as radical as compared to the 3000 family. New models have a higher resolution sensor (24 megapixels), and they offer new capabilities for video shooting. Almost all innovations look like “polishing” an already quite perfect camera. In terms of photography, there is no fundamental difference between the last three models, especially if the optics fleet is limited to budget lens models. Based on this, it is worth making a decision - is it worth overpaying 10-15 thousand rubles for the “newness” of a carcass or spending it, say, on a high-aperture prime lens or an external flash? I would choose the second...

Semi-professional DSLRs Nikon D7000, D7100, D7200

Nikon 7000 family cameras are positioned as semi-professional. Their functionality includes everything that is in the 5000 series, but at the same time there are functions and capabilities that are not found in lower classes. The 7000 family are serious cameras that can do a lot. Another thing is that this “much” is practically not in demand in the amateur niche.

Nikon D7200 is currently the flagship of the 7000 family

Widget from SocialMart

The main advantage regarding photo quality is that the D7000+ family of devices has approximately 1.5 times greater range workers ISO compared to models of the 5000 family. It seems strange - the matrices are the same, the processors are the same. However, no one has canceled the capabilities of the built-in software that is used for signal processing. Apparently, for the 3000 and 5000 families, processing occurs according to a more “stripped-down” program.

A relatively low noise level is not the only advantage of the devices of the 7000 family. Below I will simply list the main things that are in the 7000 series and not in the younger ones and explain why they are needed.

  • Minimum shutter speed 1/8000 second will be useful if we are photographing in very bright light with a super-fast lens (for example, Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4), so that the background is blurred (i.e. at a wide open aperture). Cameras from the D3000 and D5000 family have a minimum shutter speed of 1/4000 second, at which overexposure is likely in such conditions. To avoid this, you have to close the aperture, sacrificing the degree of background blur.
  • X-sync speed 1/320 second(instead of 1/250) will allow you to get clearer photos of fast moving objects when shooting with flash. The D3000 and D5000 family of devices can do this only if the flash supports fast synchronization, and then with a number of restrictions - a reduction in the guide number and the likelihood of temporary parallax in the frame (distortion of the shape of fast moving objects).
  • The presence of a "screwdriver" allows you to fully use lenses that do not have a built-in autofocus (AF) motor. Now there are fewer and fewer of them on sale, but they are cheaper than their “motorized” counterparts (AF-S). A lot of high-quality “screwdriver” optics are sold used.
  • Metal case with dust and moisture protection provides greater mechanical strength of the structure and its “all-weather” capability. However, this advantage is fully manifested if the lens has similar protection. The kit lens (18-105mm), which usually comes with the camera, does not have such protection. The strength of the case is really in demand if you need to hang a heavy lens on the camera - in this case, the camera will not outweigh and tilt with the lens down, and additional strength will not hurt the mount, since the loads on it can be significant. With ordinary amateur lenses, the body of which is made of plastic, these advantages disappear.
  • High continuous shooting speed allows you to capture fast-paced events in more detail. To be honest, the difference in continuous shooting speed between the 7000 and 5000 series is not very large - for example, the D5300 has a continuous shooting speed of 5 frames per second, and the D7100 has a continuous shooting speed of 6 frames per second. The flagship model in the 7000 family (D7200 at the time of writing) has a continuous shooting speed of 7 frames per second.
  • 2 slots for memory cards allow you to either increase the number of frames or ensure duplication of the footage onto two flash drives at once, thereby reducing to zero the likelihood of data loss if something suddenly happens to the flash drive. This is a very useful function for performing some highly responsible tasks.

There are other differences in terms of support for GPS, Wi-Fi, microphone input, recording audio comments for photos and other minor functions that few people use.

To summarize, I can only say one thing - Nikon D7100, D7200 cameras are not worth buying for amateur use (at least I wouldn’t). Not because they are “bad” - by no means! It’s just that those advantages that cause an increase in price by at least 50% compared to the 5000 series in everyday life will be used at best by 1%. Arithmetic is clearly not in favor of the simple amateur photographer.

If the device is purchased as a means of production and the photographer knows exactly why he needs a shutter speed of 1/8000, an X-sync time of 1/320 seconds, etc. (see above), then the camera from the 7000 series looks like a very smart solution. In terms of picture quality, these devices are comparable to full-frame ones for the same price, and in some respects they surpass them.

How to choose a camera for a novice photographer: Canon or Nikon, professional, SLR, digital? Camera, lens and other gadgets - for better photos.

How to learn to take photographs? First of all, buy a “learning aid” - a digital SLR camera. How to choose a DSLR for a beginning photographer? How much could such a camera cost and what characteristics should it have? Tips from a professional photographer.

It is very difficult to buy something that you are not very good at. If you don’t have anyone to ask for advice, you don’t trust sellers, and reviews frighten you with an abundance of incomprehensible terms, then this page is for you! But even if you already have a camera, here I will tell you what everyone who is going to shoot with a DSLR should know, and not in automatic mode, when the camera itself adjusts the parameters for shooting. Often, it does this not entirely successfully: with such settings, you risk getting “flat” photographs devoid of artistic value. We strive for more, don't we?

Canon and Nikon against each other and other cameras

If you haven't bought a DSLR yet, but are planning to do so, then get ready to take part in the battles of the eternal photographic war between the two most famous brands of professional photographic equipment - Canon and Nikon. Fortunately, no photographers were physically harmed in this war, but the fighting continues. Any owner of a Canon or Nikon camera is sure that his camera is the best.

When photographers who are unfamiliar with each other often look at the camera first and only then look at their colleague’s face.

There are, of course, supporters of less popular brands, such as Sony or Panasonic Lumix. But there are significantly fewer of them, since SLR cameras are far from the only and, of course, not the primary line of production of these companies. Buying a camera from a “non-core” company is the same as buying shoes under the brand of a company specializing in clothing production.

Priority in any business is always given to the main product or service. For a clothing company, shoes are most likely just a nice addition, which is not always of the proper quality, but is quite affordable. In the case of cameras, the matter is further complicated by the fact that for relatively unpopular cameras there is much less accompanying equipment on sale than for cameras with a big name. This somewhat reduces your ability to develop your photography skills. And in general, it’s nice to see many different gadgets in stores that are suitable for your camera.

So if you haven’t bought a camera yet, but are just trying it on, it’s better to choose a wide famous brand. But if you're already the proud owner of a camera—and it's not Nikon or Canon—don't worry. I will teach you how to make the most of its capabilities, as well as minimize associated costs (we will talk more about the secrets and tricks of saving money in photography).

In any case, at the stage of choosing a camera, try not to read online forums of “canonists”, “nikonists” and other “ists” and do not believe those who foam at the mouth to prove the absolute advantages of their favorite brand. The main thing is that the camera is easy to use, fits in your hand and meets your own requirements.

The photographer had dinner with a very nice married couple. Those, wanting to compliment, said:
— Your photographs are very beautiful. You probably have a very good camera.
The photographer just smiled sweetly in response. After dinner, he approached the hostess and praised her:
— Lunch was very tasty. You probably have very good pots.

How much does a camera cost?

Obviously, the price of a camera depends on its functionality. There is no point in choosing the most expensive camera for everyday use. The same can be said about the cheapest models designed for children and beginners. Although these cameras bear the proud name of “DSLR”, the results of their work cannot always be distinguished from photographs taken by an advanced “point-and-shoot camera”. On the other hand, some beginners naively believe that if you buy very expensive equipment, you don’t have to study - the camera itself will set the necessary settings and take the best pictures in the world. However, everything is exactly the opposite: more complex technology requires much more serious training from the user.

Before deciding to purchase a particular camera, calculate the budget for the purchase of a complete set of equipment and accessories: the camera itself, one or two lenses, a camera bag, a protective filter, a flash card and, possibly, external flash(We will discuss all this in detail a little later). The cost of a complete set starts from about 25 thousand rubles and can grow... almost indefinitely. The most reasonable price for the kit is in the range from 40 to 80 thousand rubles.

But even if you're only planning to photograph yourself and friends, don't be alarmed if you have (or are about to have) a camera that's slightly beyond your current needs. A camera “to grow a little” will come in handy if in the future you have a desire to become a master of professional photography. In this case, you will be able to use advanced features that may seem unnecessary at first.

Choosing a camera: 8 steps

I will give a list of the most important characteristics, playing a decisive role when choosing a camera. There are only eight of them, although many photographers can argue with me by reducing or, conversely, adding new items. However, with this list you can safely go to the store and present it to the seller. Or pass it on to friends who are planning to buy a camera.

  1. Price. Focus on the budget that you can allocate. In any case, it is better to have a low-functional SLR camera than none.
  2. Matrix size. The sensor is the chip in a digital SLR camera. It consists of many photosensitive elements that react to light that passes through the lens. If you are not limited on funds, you can choose a professional camera with a full-frame (full-size) sensor, but I recommend a more budget semi-professional camera with a so-called partial-frame, or “cropped” sensor.
  3. Matrix resolution. Don't chase a large number megapixels. They will only be useful to you if your photographs are published in the press or for printing them in a very large format. Ten megapixels will be quite enough (on almost all modern cameras this number is higher).
  4. Matrix sensitivity (ISO values). If you plan to frequently take photos in low light (such as at dusk), choose a camera with the highest possible ISO settings. Depending on the specific model of the device, sensitivity can vary in the range from 50 to 25,600 units. High sensitivity values allow you to take a clear picture at dusk or even at night, but in this case small image defects are inevitable.
  5. Manual control. It is recommended to purchase a camera in which you can manually adjust all settings (aperture, shutter speed, white balance, sensor sensitivity) - this opens up unlimited shooting possibilities.
  6. Possibility of video shooting. A camera is not a video camera. If you want to shoot with it good video, you will have to first learn this and also purchase the necessary equipment. Even for home video shooting, it is better to use special equipment. In the pursuit of multifunctionality, you risk forgetting about your main goal - to take good photographs.
  7. Size and weight. The larger and heavier the camera, the better it is. But for everyday purposes, a large and heavy camera is not very convenient for obvious reasons. So the ideal solution would be to purchase a semi-professional camera from the middle weight category.
  8. Convenience. Visit a photographic equipment salon and see which of the selected models “fits your hand.” This feeling cannot be confused with anything: convenient buttons, pleasant shutter sound, the first shot taken right in the store...

Believe me, in a couple of years you will, like many photographers, advise your friends and family to buy exactly the camera that you chose - after all, it will be the best camera in the world!

The word pixel comes from two English words - picture (image) and element (element). In the Russian language they tried to introduce a similar abbreviation “eliz”, but it did not take root.
Many people think of a pixel as a square, but in reality this element can be rectangular, round or even octagonal. Each pixel contains only one color.

Choosing accessories, or How to allocate a budget

The biggest mistake of those who buy a camera for the first time is trying to choose the most expensive “body” (sellers call it “body”), that is, the camera body itself - without a lens and additional devices. With the remaining money, you usually buy an inexpensive lens for your first experiments. This is not the most the right decision! If you want to allocate your budget correctly, then confidently take a cheaper “carcass” and buy a good lens for it.

In general, all mirror “carcasses” can be divided into four types.

Professional ones are very expensive(from 200 thousand rubles). This is a technique for experienced professionals who make their living exclusively from high-end filming. This is for you extra waste money.

Professional expensive(from 80 thousand rubles). These are cameras with a full-frame matrix - they allow you to take excellent pictures, but in the hands of a novice amateur they lose their charm.

Semi-professional(from 40 thousand rubles). This camera is ideal for a beginner. At a relatively low price, it motivates photo achievements. By choosing this type, you are simply dooming yourself to great photos.

Amateur(from 15 thousand rubles). These are the simplest, household SLR cameras. It’s worth starting with this type of “carcass” only if your budget is very limited. In combination with good optics, such a camera allows you to get good results.

The most unpleasant feature of all “bodies”, lenses, flashes and other accessories from different companies is different standards, that is, the impossibility of using them in combination with equipment from competing photo brands. You cannot attach a Nikon lens to a Canon body, and vice versa. It’s a shame when your friends have, for example, a good lens or flash, but you cannot use them because you have a camera from another company.

When buying a “carcass”, be prepared to gradually become overgrown with additional gadgets from this particular company. If the current “DSLR” no longer meets your photographic needs, you will have to buy a new “carcass” of the same initially chosen brand. That is, the optics (lenses) will remain for a long time in any case, and even a very expensive “carcass” will sometimes have to be “updated” in the event of a breakdown or because in a few years it will become obsolete.

I'm new to photography, but for me, Canon is ideal. I recently bought a semi-professional camera on Avito for 28t. completely new and exactly what I wanted. Along the way, the same new lenses were found. There is no limit to happiness.

Cool.
I wanted to see how the author takes photographs. I couldn't find a personal website. Only the contact page. And there's no photo there either.

Link does not work. From general considerations: Film DSLRs give good quality. It’s more interesting if you can change the optics on the camera.
The downside for a beginner is that he will only find out what happened after development :)
So film ones are usually used by those with a higher level.

It depends on what you shoot. I mostly photograph “our loved ones” against the background..... An iPhone is quite suitable for this, especially since it fits better into a handbag and doesn’t stick out like a small camera. Well, in general, you can’t always carry a camera with you, but what if you accidentally stumbled upon something interesting?
When traveling, of course, I take a camera with me, but only a point-and-shoot camera; I’m too lazy to wander around the sights with a DSLR.
But for me, quality matters little (maybe because my eyesight is poor ;-)), I just want to see our smiling faces in the photo.

My daughter is practically a professional photographer. She has very good photographic equipment, but she also takes pictures with her phone. Moreover, she takes excellent photographs of both. Just for different purposes. And some people walk around with mirrors, with a smart face they talk about white balance, and when you look at the pictures, you want to cry. No DSLR will help if your hands are not growing from the right place.
I have no talent, so I don’t use a DSLR; my iPhone is more than enough.

No, it's not hard.
I never use the elevator in my parents' house. And most of the residents there don’t use the elevator; I always meet them walking up the stairs - the elevator is between floors and far from the entrance, they were installed after major renovations. The house has 5 floors, ceilings are about 3 and a half meters on average.
When buying an apartment, I was not interested in the presence of an elevator if the floor was no higher than 4.

Our elevator was turned off for a month - it went up just fine, though only on the third one. The parents didn't complain either.

Unfortunately, new DSLRs are now really noticeably more expensive than sophisticated point-and-shoot cameras. Indeed, to learn photography, it is much preferable to a DSLR. and then the option is to look for used old models, etc.

Do you want Zenit film in working condition? There even seems to be a portrait for it. If necessary, write in a personal message. At one time I left the photography circle because... Everyone around had Zeniths and FEDs, I was the only one left with Smena.

When choosing a DSLR camera, I came across an interesting point - portrait photographs taken with the Olympus E-410 seem more natural than those taken with the Canon eos 400d. Are there really any differences between them in this regard?

Discussion

I wrote my opinion about Olya and Kenon below, but about online stores:
I buy all the time. both in the fotoru and at the rest, by the way, and from the gray batch at the rest, everything was good and when a problem arose under their warranty, they repaired it without questions, and the part was brought from Japan. so my experience is positive
but first you can go to the store, twirl different cameras in your hands and decide what is closer to you
As for the tests, both in the store and in the online store, if something suddenly goes wrong, you can return it, both Fotoru and Ostava have real stores. When leaving, I simply asked the manager by phone to check the camera for dead pixels before transferring it to the courier service, this did not cause any problems, the managers there are very nice and then I was convinced upon receipt that everything was ok
and in any case, if you ask such questions, people understand that you can’t get along and why waste both your and the buyer’s time on exchanging goods :)))
V regular store By the way, there was a case when they tried to push in a defective camera, Ilona seems to have had it. and when they started testing, they brought a normal one :)
so good luck :)

“seems more natural” is your subjective assessment. what do you want to hear about the differences in this regard? that someone might think differently? :)) there is no such criterion for a camera as “naturalness of a portrait” :) it depends on the quality of the optics, focal length, shooting parameters, straightness of hands, moon phase and hundreds of other parameters :)
You can buy anywhere, but with certain restrictions. You will have to check it in any store. and before purchasing it is worth going through a short educational program "check SLR camera when purchasing" so that later it will not be excruciatingly painful.

Photo and video shooting: camera, photographic equipment, lighting, studio, photography, photo album. If you think you don't need the bells and whistles of older camera models, then it's quite possible that you'll get along just fine with this one...

Discussion

There is no need to base your choice on forums. For many years I have been shooting with a lens about which they write such nasty things on the forums that there can only be one conclusion - throw it away. And I feel good with him :))
I don't think you'll notice any significant differences between the two lenses. If you don't think you need the bells and whistles of older camera models, then it's quite possible that you'll get along just fine with this lens. But if you plan to buy a more advanced camera in the future, it will be nice if by that time you also have glass corresponding to it.
IMHO :)

By the way, I won’t dissuade you, but I’ll tell you.
At one time I also had a culpix + a flash + a bunch of other little things for this culpix. And I, too, naturally one day switched to a digital mirror.
but I think I did the right thing, I left Nikon in favor of Canon.
IMHO, Nikon as a company is more indigestible and ossified than Canon.
starting with the same flash, which, as I already wrote, you won’t use on the D70.
The same applies to virtually all accessories. They are mostly very immobile and fit a limited number of models. (which personally infuriates me).
Well, plus to this, Nikons are actually noisier than Canons.
again, Canons have a larger selection - both bodysuits and lenses (it seems to me, maybe I’m wrong).
In general, having played enough with culpix, I switched to Canono and don’t regret it at all. my work colleague has a d70 with several good lenses, I very often have the opportunity to compare the results.

although here we have Dasha Kid, she takes simply magnificent photographs on a Nikon D70 that I had never even dreamed of.

Photo and video. Recommend an inexpensive DSLR. You need a SLR camera, high quality, but inexpensive. Digital - SLR - why and why? Or am I misunderstanding something, and for digital camera does the term "mirror" define anything else?

Discussion

1. Constant operation of the matrix to capture information for display increases the level of thermal noise; in other words, the matrix gets warm. Before directly capturing the frame, you need to perform the process of so-called washing - cleaning the matrix to minimize this noise. this takes time (about 0.2-0.4s) - this is the main reason for the lag of the digital soap. In a digital mirror, the matrix is turned off during sighting (covered by the mirror), so there is no need to wash it off. There were cameras with a translucent Olympus E10 mirror, it seems, if I’m not mistaken... they allowed the matrix to work during sighting. The latest modification 20D has the ability to sight on the monitor with the mirror raised - this is used when shooting in spectrums invisible to the eye.
2. DSLRs have a matrix that is many times larger. reduces noise, increases DD and the ability to work with depth of field.
3. The matrix-processor-LCD monitor (viewfinder) channel has a very noticeable inertia - it is impossible to shoot dynamic scenes. the mirror is limited only by the speed of light :)) the resolution in an LCD monitor is limited by the number of pixels (usually about 123,000 per 1.6-1.8 inches), in a mirror - almost only by the sensitivity and resolution of the eye - which is more, I think it's clear :)
4. The DSLR has separate focusing sensors - much faster due to the use of the phase difference method instead of contrast detection in a digital camera. The DSLR always knows where to turn the focus - forward or backward for accurate focusing. the compact is forced to “run through” all possible focus positions to find the most contrasting place, sometimes several times.

yes, you misunderstand. V digital SLRs you look at the image in the same way through the viewfinder, and all functions work the same as with a regular one (conditionally). the monitor shows the picture only AFTER it has been exposed, and not BEFORE. which is still an additional plus, because... On the monitor you can view even conventionally captured frames, their histograms, data, etc.

Canon is a world leader in the photo and video equipment market. The company's almost century-long history often becomes a decisive factor when choosing a camera. The Canon logo can be found on budget compact digital cameras and professional DSLRs. But it is important to take into account that the company started producing point-and-shoot cameras relatively recently, and therefore does not have the same advantages over competitors as in the production of SLR cameras. Canon is taking its first steps in the use of mirrorless technologies, but it is still far from being the market leaders.

The company's strong point is SLR cameras. Fans of the brand note the intuitive menu and pleasant color rendering in warm colors. It is said that the photography world is divided into “canonists” and “nikonists,” but this is due more to force of habit than to significant differences. Any brand may hide more or less successful models. To avoid making the wrong choice, read reviews of the best cameras.

The best compact (digital) cameras from Canon

Compact cameras are the most inexpensive and mobile representatives of Canon photographic equipment. More compact and lighter than DSLR models, they are great for travel and memorable photos for the family photo album. The weight of most of them ranges from 400 to 600 grams. At the same time, the housing of digital devices is free of fragile protruding parts, which makes them easy to transport in a bag or suitcase.

Despite their miniature size and relatively low cost, these Canon developments are not inferior in image quality to some SLR cameras for beginners. After all, the best representatives of the category are equipped with a decent matrix with a sufficiently large number of photosensitive points to compare with more expensive devices.

3 Canon PowerShot SX620 HS

Bargain. A successful combination of light weight and operating time
A country:
Average price: RUB 12,989.
Rating (2018): 4.5

The most successful inexpensive model confidently entered the ranks of the best thanks to its practical weight of 182 grams, a thin 2.8-centimeter body and an excellent image stabilizer. With all this, the compact camera runs on battery power longer than its neighbors in the rating and other representatives of the class. On average, the battery lasts for 295 photos. Connoisseurs of low-light photography will definitely be pleased with the built-in Canon flash, which retracts into the body. The camera is also good for those who like to experiment with optical effects. The presence of a special thread on the lens allows you to install a variety of attachments and filters.

Its practicality has made this Canon one of the brand's most popular budget cameras. In addition to battery life and clear shots on the go, reviews note convenience, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support. The photo quality, of course, is inferior to professional models, but for its price it is the best.

2 Canon PowerShot SX540 HS

Best shooting speed. Winner of user favorites. Optical superzoom
A country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: RUB 19,890
Rating (2018): 4.6

Although compact cameras are traditionally considered to be underpowered and lacking in functionality, a relatively inexpensive model in the mid-price segment surprisingly combines these important features and more. Canon, which has a gorgeous 50x optical zoom that allows you to shoot from distances that would require binoculars, also boasts an excellent 21.1-megapixel sensor, which is slightly higher than some entry-level DSLRs. In addition, the device stands out from its analogues with its shooting speed in burst mode, which reaches almost 6 frames per second. The video recording function also has improved speed, thanks to which the camera shoots video at 60 frames per second.

All users rate the compact camera with the best scores and leave extremely positive reviews. In their opinion, this is an excellent choice for its price.

1 Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Kit

Best quality among compact digital cameras
Country: Japan
Average price: 45,490 rub.
Rating (2018): 4.8

The camera has been at the top of the ratings since 2014. This is the choice of quality connoisseurs who are willing to pay for it and are looking for a compact digital camera. The main advantage is high-quality optics. A bright lens (aperture opens to F2) at close distances will allow you to shoot without flash when there is insufficient light.

Other technical parameters include 5x optical zoom, macro mode, impressive crop factor of 1.85 for a compact, Full HD video, Wi-Fi and a rotating touch display.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II could be called the perfect compact digital camera, but its design does not have a viewfinder. Enthusiasts can purchase it separately, but the purchase will increase the cost of the camera by one and a half times.

Therefore, those who are just starting to master the art of photography are recommended to give preference to models for beginners. This allows you to gradually learn the capabilities of photographic equipment, without getting confused by options that are not always necessary for a beginner, requiring experience and certain knowledge.

The best Canon DSLR cameras for advanced users

Models for advanced photographers are a reasonable choice for those for whom the functionality of a camera for beginners is already limited, but the experience and knowledge to work with full-fledged professional equipment is still lacking. Price can also be a significant factor in favor of this category, because semi-professional devices are several times cheaper and often have approximately the same properties. At the same time, Canon DSLRs successfully combine automatic modes for amateurs with manual settings, giving the owner a huge selection of filters, light levels, and so on.

All this does not prevent advanced Canon cameras from being relatively compact and, in some cases, not even heavier than their digital counterparts. Therefore, they are perfect for on-site filming or a photo report on a trip.

Therefore, despite the many advantages of relatively inexpensive cameras for beginners and advanced users, DSLR Canon models for professionals are the best solution for those who have decided to make photography their life’s work. After all, this category is characterized by the largest number of megapixels of the matrix, an abundance of manual adjustments and additional features, extended burst shooting, the highest quality sound when shooting video and other advantages.

Surprisingly, with such rich functionality, many professional cameras hold a charge longer than representatives of other categories. Moreover, they support most known formats.

3 Canon EOS 5DSR Body

The best DSLR camera for studio photography. Matrix 50.6 megapixels
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 195,990.
Rating (2018): 4.6

The SLR camera is aimed primarily at studio and advertising photographers and expands the possibilities of commercial photography. The camera occupies a leading position in the ratings thanks to an improved matrix with a resolution of 50.6 megapixels.

In addition to high resolution, the Canon EOS 5DSR is famous for its speed, but is inferior closest competitors according to photosensitivity. But if you consider the use of pulsed light in the studio, the disadvantage will seem insignificant.

A feature of a full-frame camera is the ability to shoot with crop factors of 1.3 and 1.6. Another useful option is the horizon level in the viewfinder. The Canon EOS 5DSR will be the best for studio photographers, but the options for outdoor work are limited. According to photographers, the model is demanding in terms of optics; the potential of the “carcass” is revealed with new L-series lenses.

2 Canon EOS 6D Body

The best ratio of price and quality
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 94,990.
Rating (2018): 4.7

An affordable full-frame DSLR is comparable to premium cameras, but at half the price. Proven electronics went on sale in 2012 and became a breakthrough of its time. In particular, the presence of timely installed Wi-Fi and GPS modules helps to take first places in the ratings.

When using top lenses, a DSLR camera will allow you to achieve excellent detail. Low noise levels and high operating ISOs allow you to shoot at dusk and in dimly lit rooms. The rate of fire is lower than that of competitors - 4.5 frames per second, but this is enough to solve most creative problems. The camera records decent video, and buyers have no complaints about the sound or picture detail.

The affordable cost of “full frame” was reflected in the ergonomics. Compared to older models, the button functionality is reduced and does not allow you to quickly adjust the set parameters. But these shortcomings cannot be called significant. If you don't have extra money, the Canon EOS 6D is the best choice.

1 Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Body

The most popular SLR camera
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 223,090.
Rating (2018): 4.8

Sales of the full-frame EOS 5D Mark IV started in September 2016. It became a continuation of the legendary Canon line. The fourth generation 5D has become even more advanced. Compared to its predecessor, the model received an increased number of megapixels (31.7), Wi-Fi, GPS modules, the ability to record video in 4K format and a touch screen.

There are no fundamental differences in other parameters. In the right hands, using top-end optics, Canon can work wonders. Ringing sharpness, spectacular background blur, shooting in low light conditions. Even picky experts call ISO values up to 3200 workable.

Like its predecessor, the Mark IV has a metal body with dust and moisture protection. The equipment is not afraid of light shocks and vagaries of the weather, and metal prevents radio interference, reducing the amount of interference from mobile phones. The DSLR is praised for its lightning-fast focusing speed, with autofocus rarely fluttering even when shooting fast-moving scenes.

However, some critics considered the changes made to be insufficient and say that the Mark IV is losing ground in the ratings. The disadvantages include a small buffer size and a rather weak processor: the electronics do not have time to process video in 4K format. Despite this, sales of the legendary digital camera are growing.

The best Canon mirrorless cameras (with interchangeable lenses)

Mirrorless models are great for those who understand photographic equipment well enough to master the nuances interchangeable optics. However, professional knowledge is not required to master most cameras in this category. Models with interchangeable lenses are few in number and most are offered in the Kit version, which means that the device comes with at least one carefully selected lens, and sometimes a whole set.

The absence of a mirror gives cameras of this type some advantages over the mirror type when recording video. At the same time, they are much more compact and lighter. Therefore, this is a good intermediate option between a DSLR and a digital model.

3 Canon EOS M10 Kit

Lowest price. Lightweight and compact
A country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: RUB 22,890.
Rating (2018): 4.5

The top three best cameras with interchangeable lenses are opened by the most affordable and practical development of the Japanese company. Costing several times less than some of its competitors, this Canon is nevertheless not inferior to many of them in a number of features. Of course, in terms of the quality of the matrix, this mirrorless model is somewhat simpler than professional SLR cameras. However, the presence of a matrix cleaning function, a rotating touch screen and a resolution of 5184 by 3456 pixels make Canon, considering the cost, a rather tempting purchase. Moreover, this camera weighs less not only than DSLRs, but also digital devices. Weight 301 grams and a modest thickness of only 3.5 centimeters allow you to comfortably transport the compact device even in a small handbag.

The convenience of the camera in all respects is confirmed by numerous reviews. Users praise it for its quality, miniature size, functionality, modes and reliability.

2 Canon EOS M100 Kit

The largest maximum series of shots. Image quality. Fast autofocus
A country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: RUB 30,030.
Rating (2018): 4.6

This stylish new product for 2018 differs from its competitors not only in its original corrugated body and bright retractable flash, but also in the power of some functions. First of all, the camera will delight the owner with the best in category number of effective photosensitive elements of the matrix, which reaches 24.2 megapixels, as well as a resolution of 6000 by 4000 pixels. Therefore, there can be no doubt about the quality of the photographs and the possibility of enlarging them or printing them in a large format. Continuous shooting has also become a strong point of the camera. A speed of more than 6 frames per second, as well as a maximum number of shots of 21 for the RAW format and 89 for the familiar JPEG format, are useful for sports shooting.

In addition, according to numerous reviews, this Canon model has clear and very fast autofocus, good stabilization and photo quality. Also, many note pleasant ergonomics, intuitive menus, and autonomy.

1 Canon EOS M50 Kit

Best fast shooting speed. Microphone input. Flash shoe
A country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 42,990 rub.
Rating (2018): 4.7

The leader of the best cameras with interchangeable lenses is a powerful device with additional capabilities, found mainly only in not too cheap professional and semi-professional DSLRs. Unlike its competitors, this model does not lack the ability to connect additional flashes. A special device called a shoe allows you to connect and synchronize any external portable flash with the camera, thereby providing a good field of activity for those who like to experiment with light. The presence of a microphone input will significantly improve the sound of video materials. The Canon is also good at burst shooting, reaching speeds of up to 10 frames per second.

At the same time, in reviews, buyers note an abundance of settings that are suitable not only for beginners, but also for advanced users. In addition, the camera has an excellent electronic viewfinder and convenient button placement.

Every day I receive questions like ‘ which Nikon digital SLR camera to buy‘. In this article I will share my experience on this matter. I've shot with almost all Nikon digital SLRs with different lenses and in different conditions. Some things in choosing a camera for beginners may not be obvious, but believe me, in this article everything has been thought out as much as possible and tailored to the optimal and truthful options.

To begin with, I advise you to understand what is a camera for?, after which you need to determine the most suitable class of cameras that are suitable for the selected tasks.

All Nikon digital SLR cameras are very simply divided into 4 classes:

  1. Amateur cameras (entry level)- these cameras are aimed at people who just need to get a high-quality photo without delving into the intricacies and settings of the camera. These are the so-called cameras - ‘ point and shoot’. Most often, amateur cameras are best suited for people who don't do photography professional, but just want a good camera for home, vacation, travel, family, nature, etc.. The main requirements for such a camera are lightness, ease of operation, affordable price.
  2. Advanced amateur cameras (advanced level)— these cameras have advanced functionality with a large number of specific settings that can take a long time to figure out. These cameras are suitable for advanced hobbyists who at least have a basic understanding of camera settings or they want to get a good one potential for mastering photography skills. These cameras are noticeably more expensive and heavier, but still have the same intuitive controls as entry-level cameras.
  3. Professional cameras (high-end cameras)— these cameras are designed for people who are engaged in photography professionally, know a lot about photography and are not afraid manual settings. Typically, such cameras have a much better body, functionality and support additional extensions and capabilities. These cameras are not suitable for amateurs because do not have automatic shooting modes and have specific professional controls with a small number of prompts.
  4. Flagship professional cameras(TOP cameras) are cameras with exorbitant workmanship and functionality, needed exclusively for professional purposes. These are the cameras that all others look up to as a 'flagship'. These cameras are not suitable for beginners or hobbyists.

Nikon itself makes the distribution even simpler; on the official Nikon website there are only professional and amateur cameras, but wikipedia also divides Nikon cameras into 4 levels. By the way, the words ‘camera’, ‘camera’ and ‘camera’ in this article, and in many others, mean the same thing. View the graphical distribution of cameras by category Can .

A camera is a complex technical device, and technology does not stand still. It so happened that in my ranking cameras from Nikon can be traced clear relationship between camera output— the newer the camera, the better it is. For 2017, following this logic and other details, the best amateur camera is Nikon D5600, this can be seen from the plate below.

When choosing a camera, I do not recommend paying too much attention to the number of megapixels; in most cases, a large number of megapixels is not needed and is even unnecessary (these issues are covered in more detail). Again in capital letters- think about the fact that megapixels in amateur-level SLR cameras do not solve anything at all.

Among advanced amateur cameras, the best is full frame. If with full frame I don’t want to get involved, then the best option Among the cropped cameras is Nikon D7500.

10 April 2005 6,1 3 5 No
11 January 2004 6,1 3 5 No Outdated camera, has a small display, few focus points

Advanced amateur cameras, the D7500 is a camera. Cameras are full-format, Nikon class FX. Unlike amateur cameras, all advanced amateur cameras have and can use non-motorized, sometimes cheaper type optics (optics may also be suitable). These cameras have a monochrome display for quick setup of all basic functions, an additional selector under the shutter button, a depth-of-field preview button, and their built-in flash can. All advanced amateur cameras, except , have very useful external flashes.

A good option for an advanced camera would be the model, which I recommend as the first DSLR camera from Nikon for advanced users who want to get huge functionality for not a very large amount of money. There are also pleasant controls, a huge 3-inch display, the ability to control flashes via , Live View mode and high-quality video shooting.

About video shooting: Auto focus on all Nikon DSLR cameras works poorly or not very well when shooting video. This is because the DSLR camera mechanism is not well suited to focusing with the mirror up, which is what video mode requires. Typically, focusing when recording video occurs by contrast, and not using the camera's phase sensors. You need to be prepared for the fact that the automatic focusing speed will sometimes be hundreds of times worse than with conventional compact cameras. If speed and focusing accuracy for video are very important, then I recommend thinking about buying Nikon Z6, Nikon Z7 mirrorless cameras.

Mirrorless cameras with Nikon Z mount

Nikon now has full-frame mirrorless cameras Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7, as well as a small fleet of lenses for them. In general, these cameras are at the level of a DSLR or even slightly above it. With these cameras you can use lenses from SLR cameras using a Nikon FTM adapter. If there are a lot of problems with accurate information, it’s better to ask me about these cameras in the comments.

Equipment

Usually the camera is sold separately from the lens, this is called body, and sometimes the camera is sold with some kind of lens, this is called, and the lens included in the package is called ‘ kit lens‘. Attention: take pictures with one camera body You can’t, you must always take photographs with a lens.

Important: Usually, if you buy a camera along with a kit lens (Kit kit), then such a kit will cost less than buying a camera and lens separately.

Standard (kit) lens

List of all professional lenses For Nikon cameras DX can be found (there are only 4 of them).

The choice of other non-universal lenses requires a separate large article, but in addition to the standard (universal kit) lens, I recommend getting a fast discrete lens. This lens cannot zoom, but has a very high . A huge one will allow you to easily shoot in low-light conditions, control the depth of field (create), create an effect, and get brighter and richer colors in your photographs. In good light, such a lens allows you to shoot at very short distances.

  1. (for any Nikon DX cameras)
  2. (for any cameras)
  3. (for any focusing)

Usually the first such lens is the so-called ‘ ‘ (the last two are in the list). All the lineup fifty dollars for Nikon cameras can be found.

You will find thoughts on choosing additional options in the section

How to check a camera upon purchase is described in the ‘ ‘ section.

Nikon or Canon? I raised this issue in a series of articles on this issue: , .

My experience

I have had many Nikon cameras at my personal disposal: (about 4 years), (3 years), (2 years), (2 years), (1 year), (six months), (six months), (six months), ( 2 years), Canon (one year), Canon 300D (six months), (1 year), (about a year), (), many cameras from other brands (like Sony a7). Due to the fact that I write and work as a professional photographer, I have held and shot with almost all models of Nikon and Canon SLR cameras.

Over the past 2-3 years, I shoot all orders on or (I take them from friends). Also, I like the one I use for the needs of this site. For my home in 2015, I bought myself one, which I really love for its pleasant color rendition. In 2017 I bought and, which is not a shame to use in any conditions, a gallery of pictures from this camera is located just below. In 2018, I actually got it for nothing, you can look at pictures from it. I am not ashamed to shoot with old cameras, because I know for sure that the final result depends on to a greater extent from other factors ().

From personal experience I can add that choosing a camera is not an easy task, it is especially difficult to choose the first camera, then everything becomes simpler and choosing something else becomes very, very easy. Take my advice - don’t chase megapixels, they solve practically nothing. I wish everyone to find exactly ‘their best camera’, and also remember that, and not by what means.

Alternative versions at the lowest price

If the desire to take photographs is in your blood, and the budget for purchasing a DSLR camera is very limited, then I recommend looking towards used cameras. Used there is nothing wrong with cameras. For example, for only 100 USD. you can buy used (or, or, or, or) with a kit lens. Even such an old DSLR will be in many ways better than some modern digital point-and-shoot cameras and even advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses, for example, such as.
