Where can you get art education? Diary of a young lady

With enviable frequency, they ask me what university I graduated from and where I would advise to do. And also - isn't it too late to start at 23 years old (30, 40 and beyond with variations :)? So here is my public response :)

First, I'll just answer the question. And, by the way, I immediately ask you to forgive me if my post seems to someone a pathetic speech or, God forbid, "memoirs of a pro", this is just my experience and my conclusions from it. If I read this message myself, being a student, probably, firstly, I would stop rushing about (what is the best university?), And secondly, I would sigh sadly (nothing new, zeal and work will grind everything)But first things first:)

I finished Moscow State Pedagogical University Lenin art and graphic faculty.
I do not recommend this university, and do not consider it the worst place to learn to draw.Throughout the time that I studied there, I always wanted to leave and go somewhere else. It seemed to me that we were not taught well, although I myself systematically and mercilessly skipped part of the classes :) We were not taught what a modern artist needs, and I think a modern teacher too. All knowledge was outdated. And even relatively new disciplines (computer graphics), however, were absolutely not useful. The same Photoshop would be much more useful. But we were taught, it seems, the Paint program.

Nevertheless, if desired, there will always be at least one teacher who will inspire by example. And even one person can tune in the right way. For me, this person was my drawing teacher, Lushnikov Boris Vasilyevich. B.V. always spoke quietly, tediously and for a long time. He no longer praised drawings, but some of my findings and my diligence. In general, at first he seemed to me more of a funny person.

But one day he marked one of my sketches with a tick and told me why he liked it. Then he began to mark portraits and in the end he noticed something “such” in me. It just blew me away! To be honest, other teachers did not make much of an impression on me, but I showed Boris Vasilich my works (and paintings too) all the time. She just brought folders and we discussed them for a long time in the corridor. I continued to visit him even after graduation.

After the end of the art graph, in my folder there were a bunch of portraits of our models (rower, swimmer, guy Philip and many more strange characters). I only learned the word "portfolio" when I set out to get a job as an artist in a publishing house. And I immediately realized that I didn’t have any “portfolio”. They looked at my work without obvious pleasure and returned it with the words - go study some more. And I was depressed.
I tried to give the work to the vernissage on Krymsky Val and they told me that this was amateurism. For interest, this was the work.
Frankly speaking, there was no such work - "artist". Therefore, I got a job in an adjacent, as it seemed to me, profession. Interior designer. Then I tried printing. I drew for websites, packages, postcards... At the same time I studied Photoshop, Illustrator, AutoCAD, Archikad and a bunch of other programs no longer needed by anyone)

And also, I regularly felt: yes, I know what a shadow-penumbra-reflex is; I am aware of how the colors are located on the color wheel; I know what glazing is and I love it when the canvas rings under the elastic bristle brush. But all this knowledge was somewhere in parallel with what really needed to be done. And I really didn't like it. I came home from work and realized that I no longer had the strength to be creative. It was the most difficult period.

What am I to? To the fact that often, if not always, you will have to learn on your own. Yes, you can get useful knowledge in an art university. You will hone your skills and get used to drawing "realistically" without mistakes. Personally, without these 5 years, it would be extremely difficult for me. I believe that a classical school is needed. And in principle, it probably almost doesn't matter where you get this basic knowledge. But they should be.

For me, I remember, something just switched. And it's funny that one of the guys in our hostel (who graduated from the Mari art school, traditionally strong) told me exactly that. "You draw, and then something will switch. You will notice."

And suddenly I realized that now I see. I see perspective errors, I see that something is wrong. I stopped looking at someone's work and thinking it's good because "it's such a beautiful blue sky." That I see her in her entirety. And copy at least 100% of the same sky into your work, it will not shoot the same way. I didn't have to ask the teacher: "Look, please, how is it?" (hoping to get approved)
In general, I suddenly realized that the thought and observation process should take a very large dose of time. Hundreds of sharpened pencils, a set eye and damaged sheets, and I myself allowed myself to rise a step higher. I realized that there are things that are good. That I'm not ashamed to show them anymore. And it happened about 5 years after graduating from Moscow State Pedagogical University. By the way, it was at this time that someone began to consider me "arrogant" and immodest. For some reason, it is believed that a decent artist should not know his own worth. He must be humble and poor. But it's ok, I digress :)

Thus, Even if you go to college, you still have to study. But this is a different path. Very interesting and educational. And here only your observation, patience, courage will help you.

  • Attend workshops with people who inspire you.

  • Try to make copies of what you like.

  • Don't be afraid to try and fail. Throw away sheets and start over.

  • Be honest with yourself.

  • Feel free to draw on the street, feel free to draw on the subway.

  • Just give yourself to this process and constantly feed your inspiration. Magazines, websites, live communication, visits to exhibitions. Everyone has something of their own.

Yes, and is it too late to start now?I think that it's probably only late in professional sports, but yes, it's not too late, of course. No one, never and nowhere.

But, you know what? In order for this post to be useful and informative, I propose here to tell the artists about their education in this order:
1. The name of your university and general impressions about it.
2. Do you consider the knowledge gained there to be exhaustive and suitable for further work?
3. Looking back, would you change the course of your art education? Would you change something?

Each person is faced with the choice of a profession, and, unfortunately, not everyone sees their goal accurately and finds a calling long before entering. Sometimes, finishing the 10th grade and moving on to the 11th, schoolchildren frantically begin to think about where they want to continue their education and, importantly, whether their families will be able to finance this or that university.

Everyone has long known that without preparatory courses and tutors it is impossible to enter immediately after school in any good creative university in the country. Moreover, if you feel creative potential in yourself, love for art, are interested in the architectural component of our world, then it would be better to set a goal to become an architect as early as possible. class in 9, for example. Preparation takes an average of 2 years, and taking into account graduation art school. More precisely, it does not matter at all whether you have years spent in such an institution behind you. Of course, this is a good bonus to classes in painting and art history, but it has nothing to do, for example, with academic drawing, where every millimeter must be lined up. Next comes the hatching technique, it all depends on who will teach you, teachers have a different stroke style. Looking at the work, students immediately determine who their classmate studied with. And, of course, projection drawing! Development of spatial thinking, long hours of training, work on the purity of presentation, graphics, mastering and studying all the thicknesses used when inking your drawing. Here they practically do not give the right to make a mistake, they reduce for everything: projection errors, graphics, correct design inscriptions.

AT this case I describe my experience as a graduate of the Moscow Architectural Institute (MARCHI). Almost every student of this university recalls with a shudder the stages of preparation and entrance exams passed. Every time, being already a teacher at the Moscow Architectural Institute (I was never able to part with the walls of my native institute), I shudder when I see the exam schedule, the list of the commission and the crowds of applicants. Perhaps this is because I had to go through the whole procedure twice. Try to do it 2-3 times This is a common situation for our university.
But years of study the highest reward for all the labors and torments! Design, field trips, teaching staff, the opportunity to work in architectural workshops and gain experience, because hands are always and everywhere needed (sketches, models) All this can be enjoyed while studying.

So, while my memories have not taken me far, I will list several state institutions that train future architects. I will be based not on ratings, but on experience and opinion among those who want to master this profession.

Of course, in Russia there are many universities with an architectural and artistic focus; we have chosen, in our opinion, the best in the capital.

Advice for first and second year students: start attending bachelor's and diploma defenses as early as possible. First, you will be able to figure out for yourself which specialization projects you like best, and make a choice in favor of one of them before the general panic over distribution begins. Secondly, by seeing what students come up with (the idea and quality of the submission of projects), listening to the questions that are asked in the process, you will gradually draw conclusions and will feel more ready and confident when it comes time to appear before the committee members yourself. Do not miss the opportunity to get a job as a senior student. This will allow you to gain proper experience and give you the opportunity to bypass the long job search after graduation. Students of architectural and art institutes always have such a chance. Gives us a lot of skills similar education, besides, almost all institutions have departments teaching computer technology. Keep track of your progress and try to get as much as possible everything that is included in curriculum so that later you don’t go to courses and don’t listen again to the same thing for extra money.

The artist paints not what he sees, but what he feels.

Pablo Picasso

There is an opinion that an artist is a brush of the Creator. That is, the talent of a painter is a gift from God, which leads the hand of an artist who paints pictures. Perhaps that is the way it is! But one talent is not enough: it must be developed, directed, improved. For this, there are art universities, in which centuries-old knowledge is concentrated on the clarity of lines, the play of colors, and the consistency of style.

Despite the fact that in this profession, as in any other creative profession, few people succeed in becoming professional and successful, competitions for art universities are traditionally high.

When entering an art educational institution, as well as a theater school, you must first prove the presence of talent, which will later be able to prove itself and surprise the world with beautiful paintings. In the 17th century, the artist studied for 15 years. Today, education at the university takes place for 5 years, but preparation for admission takes several years. Talented novice artists, as a rule, attend art circles, children's art schools, graduate from specialized lyceums and colleges from childhood. At art universities, there are art schools or preparatory courses where you can study from 6 months to 2 years.

From the very beginning, you need to decide in which direction you will build your career. Art institutes have several faculties:

  • painting;
  • charts;
  • restoration and technology of painting;
  • sculptures;
  • architecture;
  • animations and multimedia;
  • theory and history of art;
  • design;
  • monumental-decorative and applied art.

When applying to an art institute, an applicant must submit their creative work: drawing and painting. Those who pass this preliminary stage are admitted to the entrance creative examinations, which take place in the workshops of the university. At the second stage, tasks are performed for several days on:

  • graphite pencil drawing (portrait and figure);
  • painting (portrait with hands, made oil paints or watercolor)
  • compositions in any technique to choose from.

And only after these creative competitions, the USE results are accepted from the applicant.

In addition to talent and education, an artist also needs such prosaic qualities as hard work, communication skills and the ability to find mutual language with customers, owners of galleries and museums.

Creation can outlive the creator:
The Creator will leave, defeated by nature,
However, the image he captured
Will warm hearts for centuries.
I live in thousands of souls in the hearts
All those who love, and, therefore, I am not dust,
And mortal corruption will not touch me.

Michelangelo
