Architectural Art Institute. Moscow Architectural Institute (State Academy)

A graduate of the Faculty of Architecture shares her experience: how to prepare for admission, what it's like to study with Soviet teachers and what to become an architect for

Architect, graduated from the State University

I decided to study architecture by accident. About a year before admission, I realized that I wanted to do something tangible that I could touch. However, I had a craving for organizing space for a long time: as a child, I loved rearranging furniture in a dollhouse and building huts.

In 2016, I graduated from the State University of Land Management. Now I work by profession in an architectural firm. I'll tell you what difficulties I had on the way from admission to work.

What does an architect do

An architect is a person who knows how to conveniently and reliably arrange objects in space. He designs buildings, supervises construction, and handles project documentation.

There are also design engineers. If the architect is more likely to come up with how the building will look outside and inside, then the engineer develops and calculates the structures. You can work as an engineer with an architectural education, but it is better to finish your studies.

Where to apply

There are 10 universities in Moscow with an architectural specialty:

  • MARCHI - Moscow architectural institute
  • MGSU - Moscow State University of Civil Engineering
  • GUZ - State University for Land Management
  • RUDN - Russian University Friendship between nations
  • MIIGAiK - Moscow State University geodesy and cartography
  • MASI - Moscow architectural and building institute
  • MGAHI them. IN AND. Surikov - Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov
  • Moscow branch of RMAT
  • IIR - Institute of Restoration Art
  • RAZhViZ - Russian Academy painting, sculpture and architecture by Ilya Glazunov

MARCHI is the main and oldest architectural university in the country; other institutes have only architectural departments. It is he who sets learning programs and quoted more than others. Therefore, it is difficult to enter the Moscow Architectural Institute: there is a very high competition. I know people who have been there for several years.

Other universities are simpler, but, according to by and large The quality of education is the same in all universities. Because the same teachers teach under the same program - they move from one university to another.

When choosing an institute, status plays a role rather: many employers hire only graduates of the Moscow Architectural Institute. It is also worth looking at the bias of the university. For example, in MGSU this is construction, in GUZ it is land management.

What is needed for admission

Exams. To become an architect, it is enough to pass the exam in mathematics and the Russian language. Greater value have creative exams: drawing and drafting. In the figure you need to draw a head and a capital. In drawing - to perform an axonometry, that is, to draw a facade, a side view and a top plan of a three-dimensional detail. Also in some universities there is painting at the entrance.

Detail drawing in projections

Timing. I prepared in less than a year, but those were critical deadlines. It's best to start in a year or two. Especially if there is no behind art school. Some of my classmates graduated from the art school and already knew how to do what I mastered at an accelerated pace.

On the other hand, success in exams depends more on desire than on ability. The more you want to get into architecture, the more chances you have to get in.

Where to get ready. The main thing is to find a good teacher, who coaches on the main exams. I advise you to look for it in the institute where you are going to enter. There are also preparatory courses at universities. But they give much less than private lessons.

What is it like to study

Architects currently study under the bachelor's program for 5 years. I caught the time when all 6 studied.

Items. A profile subject in architecture is a project. It gives out objects that you have to come up with from start to finish. At first, this is something simple: a playground or a gas station. In the following courses, we designed banks, museums, holiday homes, and other complex public buildings.

Working on the project was interesting, but most of all I liked the history of architecture. We were especially lucky with a teacher in modern architecture - I discovered this direction for myself only thanks to him.

In general, architectural art allows you to look at the space around you in a different way. Not in the way the average person is used to seeing. You walk down the street and understand the time, the style, why it happened to this particular street. You begin to understand art, to be interested in painting. It's very nice and great.

Difficulties. From the very beginning of our studies, we had to get out. I don’t know how it was in other universities, but they taught poorly at the State University. Already at the first couple, we were asked to assemble the project, but they did not explain how to do it. The teacher used terms that I heard for the first time - for example, "general plan" and "explication". But no one showed how they should look. As a result, we had two days to get the drawings and information.

But it was a good school: in life you need to be able to find the information you need yourself. Self-education at the institute prepared me for this.

Another difficulty concerned computers and architectural programs. We were allowed to draw in them only in the fourth year - the teachers were sure that the computer does everything for us. For the drawings made in the program, they even lowered the marks. And the teachers who taught the programs did not know them. So we had to figure it out ourselves.

I think it has to do with the generation of teachers. For the most part, they came out of the old Soviet school and were not interested in passing information to us.

Of course, there were also worthy teachers who conducted classes in an interesting way and willingly shared their knowledge. They came to us in the fourth year. One of them led projects, and he was a person who was “burning” with his work, always wanting to learn something new. He supported our ideas and made it so that working on the project was a joy for us.

Practice

At the end of each course we had practice. In the first year, we went to Borisoglebsk for measurements. There we were divided into groups and sent to the buildings - as a rule, dilapidated or historical. The point was to take measurements, draw this building and submit it as a project.

A dilapidated church in the village of Bolshie Alabukhi, where we took measurements

On another course, we were sent to the restoration practice at the Sukhanovo estate. It was interesting to me, because we lived on the estate and could go around all the buildings, see them and touch them. But at first this practice was not well organized: we were not given any tools, no first aid kits, no normal stepladders. And we had to prepare the building for restoration: clean the walls and cornices, cut down the undergrowth. Then everything was given out, but at first I had to use improvised means at my own peril and risk.

In the sixth year, as an internship, we had to find a place - an architectural firm, bureau or company - and work there for two months. But none of the employers wanted to take on a student even for no reason. After all, in fact, we still did not know how, and no one wanted to waste time on us. As a result, we all settled down at the last moment only thanks to acquaintances, relatives and friends who had some connections in architecture.

Where to work

Specialty. After an architectural degree, you can work in any applied specialty related to drawing and drafting: an architect, designer, planner, design engineer. They are needed in architectural firms, bureaus, design studios.

You can also become an artist and draw freely, for example, making scenery in the theater. Or become a teacher in these specialties.

An experience. In order to gain work experience by the end of your studies, you need to get a job as early as possible. But physically it is difficult: due to loads and voluminous tasks, we often did not sleep at night. I didn't manage to allocate time and energy for work. Some guys managed to earn extra money, albeit to the detriment of their studies. I think they did the right thing - in the end, employers are only interested in experience, and not in your diploma and grades.

How much do architects earn?

There are two ways to work as an architect.

In the office. This is a job from 9 to 18, where you, along with other architects, participate in the project. Tasks are distributed among everyone: someone draws, someone goes to measure or choose materials. The project is supervised by the chief architect. He also communicates with clients.

💰 Salary office worker somewhere from 30,000 to 150,000 rubles. The latter is the chief architect for the project.

To myself. An architect can leave the office and look for clients himself. But if you go freelancing, you must literally live with architecture. Because such people never rest, and architecture is a way of life for them.

A freelance architect leads the entire project alone. He communicates with customers, draws, travels to sites, selects furniture, supervises contractors and monitors construction. Plus, he has a higher responsibility: he is also responsible for the reliability of structures.

💰 This is, of course, completely different money. Much more than you can get in the office. For example, on a project of a whole house, with a complete device and engineering, you can earn 600,000 rubles.

Why go to architecture

I cannot say that the profession of an architect is in demand. Finding a job is difficult. Now everyone needs IT people and programmers who create virtual reality.

But architecture is interesting: it's great when you can create something pleasing to the eye. Therefore, if you go to the architectural one, you must love it very much. Do not feel that this is a vital necessity for you - do not go. There is a lot of creativity in architecture, and it takes all of you.

In the end, of course, you will take your place. But only when Great love to architecture you will achieve real success.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking that of all school subjects Do physics, drawing and fine arts attract you with the same force? If you answered “yes” to this question, then congratulations - you have every chance. This profession combines several areas at once, from artistic to technical and engineering, and requires creative approaches where the exact sciences rule. The work of an architect may turn out to be extremely interesting for you, but at the same time it can also be difficult: you have to work hard, and wage at the same time, it often turns out to be disproportionately small with the amount of work performed. A modern employer agrees to pay good money to an architect, but only if he has a high-quality higher education behind him. We found out which architectural universities can promise their graduates a decent salary and demand in the labor market.
