All new information, entering our brain is divided into necessary, potentially necessary, and useless. And one main criterion helps the brain determine the place of new knowledge: the frequency of use of knowledge or skill.

We use our native language every day, so we can’t just forget it. But as soon as we live in another country for several years, we begin to notice that it becomes as if we are formulating sentences, and we have to literally recall words from memory.

There are also words in our native language that we once heard, perhaps even used for some time, but then stopped.

An example would be school terminology in a certain subject. And now, when we hear this or that word or term, we recognize it, but do not use it in our speech.

The same is true with learning any foreign language: vocabulary divided into active, passive, and potential.

If everything is more or less clear with active and passive vocabulary, then what is the third type?

A potential dictionary is a set of words that we supposedly don’t know, but we can easily guess their meaning if we are familiar with certain rules.

An example is words that are formed by adding affixes. For example, knowing any verb and being a little familiar with the topic of participle (participle), we will be able to form new lexical units on our own: read - to read, reading - reading, reading.

Knowing the meaning of the ending –er, we can create names of professions from the verbs we know (work – worker, teach – teacher, swim – swimmer etc.).

There is only one way to develop a solid active reserve - by constantly practicing.

When and how is it better to start learning English?

What hinders language learning?

At first I listened and memorized the sound of the letters in , it didn’t take much time. Then I simply repeated it from time to time if I forgot a letter. By the way, please note that many people, when reading an English abbreviation, do not pronounce all the letters correctly. Maybe this is not so important, but a native speaker would not like it, it would hurt their ears.

Reading without understanding

Afterwards I began to read the texts, mostly I liked them the most, and also, sometimes. I didn’t know what they said (only sometimes I understood a couple of words), but at that moment I couldn’t even read. I just wanted to learn to read, so I read every day because I wanted to, and unclear words I inserted the sound into Google Translator and listened there. After a maximum of a month (reading for 30 minutes every day), I learned from scratch to read decently, but not to understand.

Dictionary

Then everything went much easier, the main thing was to go through one of the most difficult stages- fear that I will not be able to read English text normally at a normal pace. Later, I began to translate and write down in different sources (in a notebook, in a dictionary on a mobile phone, in a computer) words and phrases (!) that I didn’t know - I replenished my own. To put it mildly, there were a lot of them at first.

Two translators, who are described, provided me with invaluable assistance in this matter.

But very soon unknown words has become much smaller, especially in simple fairy tales and stories. I have already begun to understand what they say, their essence. The main thing here was not to be lazy and repeat the words, otherwise it happened that there was nothing to do, but I didn’t want to read the words - learn them.

Grammar

In parallel with the dictionary, I was studying, to be honest, it infuriated me, but I understood and remembered the most basic things (affirmations and denials, ...) during practice - reading. Because I began to notice a long time ago that there are many words that are spelled slightly differently, but the meaning is the same, only the tenses are different (play - play, played - played, playing - game) in combination with in different words will, is, are, did, have been, that is, he began to understand the structure of the language in a natural way.

But if you want to quickly understand the structure of the English language, you still have to read a little grammar (at least the fundamental part)

Transcription

I didn’t want to learn it until recently; I considered it not so necessary and at the same time difficult (maybe because I couldn’t find good teaching material). But the time to realize that without it it would be too difficult to advance in English had finally come, and I began to comprehend it, gritting my teeth. When I realized my mistake, I began to actively watch cartoons and films, listened to various audio books... and trembled, repeating after native speakers.

In general, after about three months of fruitful work on my hearing aid, I began to pick up rapid speech and have decent conversations. Of course, at first I was embarrassed by my accent, but you can’t get rid of it, you can only downplay it.

Now I watch all kinds of videos, films, audio, books, listen to English radio in my spare time - that is, I maintain my English level. Of course, you will always have to look into the dictionary, but this rarely happens anymore. I believe that this path, which is described above, will help you. Oh yes, I probably forgot to say the most interesting thing, this whole journey lasted about 8 months, without lies or exaggeration.

So come on, don't be lazy, just study a little bit. It is not necessary to exercise every day, at least once or twice a week for 30-60 minutes.

It is almost impossible to train him alone. The most you can do is try to find a friend who is learning English.
