This task is performed by power systems various levels- from the Unified Energy System of Russia (combining devices for the production of electricity - power plants, devices for transporting electricity - power grids, devices for distributing electricity and issuing it to consumers - electrical substations and electrical panels) to the energy system of a city, enterprise, residential complex etc.

It is energy systems and their constituent devices that the electric power engineer is engaged in. It works with all stages life cycle power systems and power devices: deals with their design, creation, operation and maintenance, and even disposal - decommissioning of individual elements without harm to the power system as a whole and to consumers.

It is clear that an electric power engineer is a very important and responsible profession: it provides the very possibility of the existence of modern, non-archaic forms of life and activity on the territory. Energy system forms the infrastructure (underlying structure) of any settlement, any modern look activities. And the power engineer is responsible for ensuring that this infrastructure works properly.

But will this profession also be interesting? After all, the basic laws of electrical engineering were discovered already in the 19th century! Doesn't it turn out that an electric power engineer only repeats already worked out solutions, adapting them to specific conditions?

Right now, the electric power industry is going through three innovative waves at once, and each of them contains an engineering challenge - a task that does not have an unambiguous and proven solution, and sometimes simply has not yet been solved.

The first innovation wave is new energy sources, primarily renewable energy sources (RES). Renewable energy attracts with its relative environmental cleanliness, as well as inexhaustibility. But RES, especially solar and wind, have one feature that makes their use difficult - uneven generation, depending on natural conditions. How to include RES in a single energy system without losing the quality of electricity and without risk to the energy system is a challenge for power engineers, which has not yet found an answer.

The second innovation wave is new power system management systems based on the so-called smart grid technologies (SmartGrid). The development of computer network technologies has made it possible to include in the power system control loop not only large objects (power plants, power lines, substations), but literally all electrical appliances up to electric kettles and washing machines. Moreover, each consumer of electricity will be able to connect renewable energy sources or a battery (for example, an electric car) to the grid and take on the role of an energy producer. How to ensure controllability of such a power system if the number of control objects tends to infinity? At the same time, of course, the power system must remain stable and provide high quality electricity. Another major challenge for electrical engineers.

Finally, the third innovation wave is associated with new physical principles underlying energy conversion devices. It's about about power electronics, which makes it possible to carry out practically the conversion of electricity with virtually no loss of power. Creating power systems using new technologies and new materials (including diamond power electronics) is also a challenge for power engineers.

Only the innovation waves and challenges in the power industry that have already taken shape are listed here. But there are still only emerging innovative waves. For example, a wave associated with the conversion of electricity into the energy of chemical bonds and vice versa for the purpose of transporting and storing electricity. Right now we are only at the stage of discovering challenges in this area. And answering them is the business of the electric power industry of the future.
